high level, especially internationally, over the summer? Bauerle: “It’s vital. It’s impossible to be successful at the NCAA level without putting yourself into that type of situation. The best swimmers at the NCAA level come from all over the world.You probably would find it very hard to look at any Olympic final or any World Championship final without finding somebody with NCAA experience.You very seldom can come here and watch a dual meet without seeing someone who has competed at the Olympics or the World Championships, not just on our team but on the team that competes against us.” After going through 2012-13 with just one diver in Bobby Chambless, you now have three with Chambless, Spencer Madanay and Walker Wheeler. What can we expect from the divers? Laak: “Having depth and experience is critical to a team’s success. The guys have really helped each other out and they are making each other better. I’m excited to see how the roles get defined as we go forward. But I’m sure that the guys we have can play a big part in the success of our team this season.” The schedule shows some challenging teams coming into Athens this season, plus you are hosting the SECs in February. What challenges do you see with this schedule? Bauerle: “There are going to be some fantastic match-ups. Every team we’re swimming against this year, in my opinion, has improved from last year. There are a lot of new coaches on our schedule, and that means a lot of energy and teams trying to do things they’ve never done. We’re going to be a huge target. But our kids love to compete. They don’t ever go into a meet not thinking they can win it. We are looking forward to all of the challenges.”
