#5 BOISE STATE

Sept. 3, 2011 • Georgia Dome - Athens, Ga. The Georgia Bulldogs suffered a 35-21 loss to the fifth-ranked Boise State Broncos in the 2011 season opener on Sept. 3 in the Chick-fil-A Kick-Off Game in front of a crowd of 73,614 at the Georgia Dome and a ESPN national television audience. The loss moves them to 89-26-3 in season openers, including 9-2 under Mark Richt. This game marked the first time since 1965 that Georgia opened a season against a team ranked among the top-five nationally. The win evens Boise States’s record against Georgia at 1-1. Georgia senior cornerback Brandon Boykin made his first career play on offense with an 80-yard touchdown run to give UGA a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Boise State answered quickly as senior quarterback Kellen Moore found redshirt freshman Matt Miller for a 17-yard touchdown pass to tie the score. Junior cornerback Branden Smith recorded Georgia’s first interception of the season with 5:32 left in the second quarter, which was soon followed by a Boise State pick by Jerrell Gavins. Boise State would continue its offensive run with a seven-yard rushing touchdown by running back Doug Martin followed by a three-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Shoemaker to give BSU a 28-7 lead over the Dogs. With a nearly a minute left in the third quarter, Georgia sophomore quarterback Aaron Murray hit junior tight end Orson Charles in a hole for a 36-yard touchdown to make it a 28-14 game. Boise State added to its lead with a one-yard rushing touchdown from D.J. Harper at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The 35-14 tally would stand until Murray would find true freshman Malcolm Mitchell for a 51-yard pass for his first career touchdown with 10:15 remaining in the fourth quarter to bring the score to 35-21 in favor of the Broncos. Junior linebacker Christian Robinson led the Bulldogs with a career-high 13 tackles followed by sophomore linebacker Jarvis Jones making his Bulldog debut with 11 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for a loss.
