for Every Opportunity

I’m pleased to present the employment report for Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business Master of Science in Finance (MSF) Class of 2023. Despite headwinds in the economy, changes to how and where we work, and growing demands on businesses to do more with less, alumni from our most recent graduating class continue to showcase resilience, grit, and the marketable skills that employers seek.

Among peer schools and programs, the Georgetown MSF program stands apart for several reasons. First, the size of our graduating class at 148 students in our traditional full-time or part-time program makes us among the largest MSF programs in the country. Second, the incredible diversity in age, experience, and location of our recent graduates is unique. With graduates ranging from 24 to 55 years of age, job titles ranging from analyst to chief financial officer, and representation across all regions of the United States, our graduates showcase the diversity found in almost every workplace today.

This report highlights the career accomplishments of our graduates within six months of graduation. To generate this report, we utilize data available from multiple sources including self-reported salary data and publicly available career data. We are guided by best-practice guidance in collecting and reporting data by the National Association of Colleges and Employers and the MBA Career Services and Employer Alliance. In many areas, we aim to go above and beyond the basic recommendations to tell a more nuanced story of our graduates’ career decisions and the career success attributed to the attainment of a Georgetown MSF degree.

As you review the report, you will notice several data points. First, we provide comprehensive salary and employment data for the entire class of 2023. The comprehensive average of $134,589 and median of $125,000 provide a snapshot of the entire group. That doesn’t tell the whole story, however. In order to fully understand the value of the degree across our diverse class profile, we have further analyzed our data by breaking it into two distinct groups – pre-experience graduates (those with less than three years of professional experience) and experienced graduates (those with four or more years of professional experience). Many of our pre-experience students are just entering the field of finance and therefore it’s important to highlight the first destination successes of this group separate from the promotions, next-step job attainment, and senior leadership career moves of our experienced graduates. Career success – especially in our multilayered, diverse alumni community – requires a more careful and deliberate view of the statistics that match the age and career stage of our graduates.

We are incredibly proud of the successes that members of the MSF Class of 2023 have achieved and look forward to following their careers for years to come. A huge thank you to all of the alumni who came before this class and reached back with opportunities, employer partners who took a chance on our graduates, the faculty, the MSF program office, and the career advising team that has helped define individual career strategies. In the spirit of cura personalis, it truly is a community effort to support the next group of leaders in finance, and it’s a commitment we are all excited to champion.

We hope you’ll help us celebrate the successes of our recent graduates and support those who look to further their careers now and in the future.

Best wishes,

This opened opportunities for me to pursue internships and experiences that further enhanced my learning without location being a limiting factor.

Additionally, I loved the people I met in the program. My classmates came from a wide array of backgrounds ranging from the military to filmmaking. There was an abundance of diversity in life experiences and career paths that introduced me to new ideas and possibilities.”

“The MSF program was instrumental in propelling me toward my career goals following my undergraduate studies. Through its extensive alumni network and faculty, I gained invaluable connections and mentorship opportunities that have opened numerous doors to achieve my academic and career goals.

FP&A

“The MSF program provided a unique opportunity to add to my quantitative toolkit by improving my understanding of capital markets, financial modeling, accounting, derivatives, and valuation, which gave me the foundation to be successful as an asset manager in private equity.

The hybrid nature of the program was incredibly valuable and allowed me to continue to work full-time and be present with family while I pursued my education. The professors, diverse background of the MSF cohorts, and overall Georgetown community gave me the support and confidence I needed to kickoff the next phase of my career. Georgetown challenged me to be exceptional academically, and I learned to be a better leader and team player.”

“Obtaining my MSF degree from Georgetown has been a transformative journey, both personally and professionally. Beyond the rigorous curriculum and top-tier education, this degree has endowed me with invaluable skills and knowledge and empowered me to navigate the complexities of the financial world with confidence and expertise.

Moreover, it has provided me with a strong network of peers, mentors, and industry professionals. This degree has played a pivotal role in propelling my career forward, opening doors to new opportunities and leadership roles within the financial sector.”

MSF Summer Clinics

Showcasing leadership skills and technical knowledge through action helps our students advance their careers. Since 2016, the MSF Program has partnered with local, regional, national, and global companies to provide students with an optional eight-week internship-like program to gain valuable project-based experience where teaming skills, knowledge, and technical expertise gained through the rigorous MSF curriculum is on full display. We are grateful to alumni and partner employers from Deloitte, Microsoft, PruVen Capital, Lockheed Martin Ventures, The Millennium Challenge Corporation, The International Finance Corporation, EG Capital, and the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation for partnering with us over the last two years.

This signature program has been a game changer for our experienced students seeking to pivot or secure a promotion and has been touted by employers as a model program to connect theory and practice.
