A MESSAGE

FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF ADVISORS

DEAR BOARD OF ADVISORS MEMBERS,

For our spring meeting, we will once again gather in New York City to discuss how we can foster a spirit of lifelong learning and engagement across our global community of alumni.

Earning a business degree is a transformative moment in a person’s professional career, but it’s also the first step in what we hope will become a lifelong commitment to learning, discovery, and growth. Together, we will contemplate how Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business can be a partner in lifelong formation and how we can drive engagement from alumni at every stage of their personal and professional lives.

On Thursday, we will host our Executive Committee meeting before participating in an interactive mentorship experience with NYC-based recent graduates. We will then return on Friday to take a deeper dive into the various ways we can engage alumni for lifelong connection with McDonough – from education incentives and personal development to how we connect them back to the Hilltop to share their insights and expertise with the next generation. The meeting will conclude with an informal luncheon to reconnect with one another before heading home.

There is immense potential in our growing network of Hoyas, and I look forward to discussing the ways we can harness the power of our global alumni to take McDonough to new heights in the years to come.

Sincerely,

2024 SPRING BOARD OF ADVISORS MEETING | 1

2024 SPRING BOARD OF ADVISORS MEETING | 3

A MESSAGE

FROM THE DEAN

DEAR BOARD OF ADVISORS MEMBERS,

We look forward to meeting together in New York City to discuss the power of alumni and the integral role they play in our school’s future. A bridge between the past and present, our growing network of 220,000 alumni offers invaluable insights, mentorship, and professional opportunities to current students. Additionally, with our Jesuit values at the forefront, we also know they are a collective force for good in the world with the potential to effect positive and lasting change. How do we nurture lifelong relationships with alumni to maximize impact? That is the question we will explore during our time together this spring.

Through campaigns such as Hire a Hoya or the Partners in Leadership, Learning, and Research (PILLARs) program, we have seen firsthand how transformational alumni engagement can be on our ability to deliver formative learning experiences for current and future students. We also want to ensure our alumni have the opportunity to return to campus to learn, reflect, and grow together at every stage of their professional careers. Our ability to foster lifelong engagement with alumni is a pivotal part of how we advance our mission and foster a community of excellence.

I recently traveled to meet with alumni in Dubai, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan to share our vision for the future of business education and discuss how we can forge new pathways for global connection. Our alumni are excited, they are eager to connect, and the time is now to harness their energy to continue our path forward. I look forward to discussing ways we can use this momentum to drive the future of lifelong engagement at McDonough.

I am grateful to all of you for your ongoing commitment to our school as we shape our legacy of impact. Thank you for all you do to continue to elevate Georgetown McDonough’s reputation for being the best in the world and the best for the world.

Best,

SCHOOL UPDATES

SUPPORTING OUR MCDONOUGH COMMUNITY

Georgetown McDonough hosted its first Staff Professional Advancement and Resource Conference (SPARC) in February to provide McDonough staff with opportunities for professional growth, building community, and space to reflect on ways to move forward personally and professionally. Inspired by the Jesuit value of cura personalis, or care for the whole person, the Dean’s Office hosted a day-long conference where staff gained insights from faculty on whole-person development and emerging trends in business, including sessions on the “Life of Work” with Professor Doug Holladay, creativity and innovation with Professor Bob Bies, how to leverage AI with Professor Nick Lovegrove, creating a culture of belonging with Professor Ella Washington, and how to manage personal finances with Professor George Comer.

Students and friends of the MBA program convened on the Hilltop over several days to celebrate, honor, and showcase the rich diversity of McDonough’s student body during the annual MBA Global Fest. The event was a culturally immersive experience that highlighted traditions from across Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. The nearly week-long celebration created a vibrant tapestry of traditions that gave attendees exposure to new cultures and helped them share their own roots with others.

LEADING AT THE INTERSECTION OF BUSINESS, POLICY, AND GLOBAL AFFAIRS

Experts, policymakers, and members of the Georgetown University community came together during the Baratta Center for Global Business’ Future of Global Business Conference in October to address topics such as global value chains, cross-border investing, AI, and the future of globalization. The Future of Global Business Conference represented the first major event of the Baratta Center, which launched in 2023 through the generosity of Joseph (B’93) and Abigail (SFS’96) Baratta to advance the school’s ambition as the world’s premier destination to study global business.

Students in the Dikran Izmirlian Program in Business and Global Affairs recently followed the global value chain of Bechtel Corporation to analyze the various stages of the company’s supply chain and deepen their understanding of how policy and international relations impact business processes at every level. Over two weeks, students attended the Virginia headquarters, explored liquefied gas operations in Texas, and visited various service hubs in Delhi, India, in addition to various cultural excursions.

The Psaros Center for Financial Markets and Policy hosted its annual Financial Markets Quality Conference in November. Leading policymakers and industry leaders discussed key policy and regulatory issues impacting market structure, AI and the financial sector, climate disclosure, digital assets, and crypto markets.

INVESTING IN FIELDS OF THE FUTURE

AI, Analytics, and the Future of Work

The AI, Analytics, and the Future of Work Initiative collaborated with the Brookings Institution in October for an event, “The Future of Remote Work: The Latest Trends in Workplace Flexibility,” and with Wolfram Research in January for “Prompting Techniques for Large Language Models.” In February, the initiative hosted Shannon Clark (C’03), head of defense growth at Palantir Technologies for a fireside chat, followed by a networking reception for students where they met with current Palantir employees.

The Center for Business and Public Policy hosted its second conference in the AI in Action Series, which focused on the topic, “How is Artificial Intelligence Transforming Firms?” The event covered the impact of AI on firms, how the technology is being used internally, as well as its impediments on the industry. The center also held a series of MBA Lunch and Learns that discussed interesting and relevant issues at the intersection of business and public life. The lunchtime events provided additional insights and perspectives for students in a setting outside of the traditional classroom environment.

Business of Health

As the U.S. healthcare system experiences unprecedented changes marked by rising medical expenses and costs of prescription drugs, federal regulations, and technological disruptions, Georgetown McDonough launched an MBA Certificate in the Business of Healthcare to prepare graduates to tackle critical issues and inspire forward-thinking solutions to the healthcare system.

The certificate will be taught in person and is open to Full-time, Flex MBA, and Flex MBA Online students starting in the spring of 2024.

In collaboration with the American Academy of PAs (AAPA), Business for Impact recently convened a select group of the nation’s leading healthcare associations, businesses, and nonprofits to strategize how to rebuild and expand the healthcare workforce. The goal of the forum was to unite multi-sector leaders to build a movement with the power to reform government policies, reshape corporate practices, and mobilize public support for transformative change.

Entrepreneurship and Innovation

Eight student teams on a mission to make a positive impact on society presented their startup ideas to a panel of expert judges during the Leonsis Family Entrepreneurship Prize “Bark Tank” Pitch Competition in October, taking home $125,000 in prizes. During the event, Georgetown Entrepreneurship also announced a $5 million gift from Ted Leonsis (C’77, P’14, P’15), founder, chairman, principal partner, and chief executive officer of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, and his family, to provide permanent support for the Bark Tank Pitch Competition, so that it exists at Georgetown in perpetuity.

Georgetown Entrepreneurship hosted its second annual Venture in the Capital Summit in January as part of the Paul and Carol Hill Distinguished Entrepreneur Speaker Series. The student-led

conference explored the intersection of venture capital, entrepreneurship, and public policy. Event speakers included distinguished alumni and industry experts who are working in the venture capital industry.

GUIDED BY OUR JESUIT VALUES

Through a collaborative effort with top undergraduate business schools from across the United States, the newly launched Business Scholars Institute will support recent graduates as they transition into the workforce, build their networks, and strive to make a positive impact on the world through business.

Funded by the Baker Trust for Transformative Learning at Georgetown University’s The Red House and with support from Georgetown McDonough, the initiative intends to continue the process of formation that starts during a student’s undergraduate journey and equip them with whole-person programming, mentorship, and leadership development alongside a community of people in a similar phase of life.

As part of the First Year Seminar Program’s Social Impact Consulting Projects, undergraduate business students worked with local nonprofit Bread for the City to propose solutions to real business challenges and present their findings. Bread for the City offers clothing, food, advocacy, healthcare, legal services, and more to residents with low income in order to reduce the burden of poverty. McDonough first year students were tasked with enhancing the nonprofit’s visibility, overall impact, and scope in the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia region.
