Elder + Space Thesis Project Category: Academic Supervisor: N. Marda Collaborator: A.Themeli Year: 2012

By the year 2020, senior citizens will comprise 25% of the total Greek population. One of the most important issues that architecture has to confront, is the relationship between the elderly and space. We propose a new way of designing Houses for Elderly people. Our potential location, based on a realistic scenario is Leonidion, a steeply slopped area with lush vegetation and a panoramic view. The housing units, can accomodate up to 30 residents. These units are supplemented by public spaces such as a lobby, restaurant and a spa. In order to offer various options to the residents, we designed

two different workshops. The former is a handicraft lab, while the latter is related to agriculture. These spaces not only offer activities for the seniors living in the housing units, but they are also available to the public, so the entire village can take part. Another important aspect of the design proposal, is the use of different materials. We endeavored to incorporate the new design into the natural environment. Natural stone, raw concrete, coloured stucco and glass are combined in order to produce a contemporary architectural experience that also refers to and respects the past.

We propose three different residential typologies, a single residence of 30m2 and two of 45m2, consisting of both twin and double beds. Each home has a southern orientation and shares the same philosophy, which is the distinction between private and common-used interior space. The vertically slanted rotating wooden planks on the facade, filter sunlight and dictate views.

Forest Pavilio

Forest Pavillion Architectural Constructions Category: Academic Supervisor: M. Tzitzas Collaborator: A.Themeli Year: 2010

The project concerned the creation of a light, dismantlable construction made of wood. The level plot is located in a forest camp by the sea. The proposal is simple and straightforward; a single spaced room of 20m2, 0.8 meters above the ground, using a horizontal grid of 0.6 m for the construction. Emphasis is given to the exterior skin of the proposal, a wooden curtain that embraces the space and allows light to enter the interior.

Green Market RE DUCE RE USE RE CYCLE The main purpose is to reconsider the idea of the ancient Agora in the contemporary city of Athens. We decided to propose a ‘‘green’’ market for young creators. A space where solely recycled materials are used in order to be transformed into pieces of art, fashionable clothes or design objects. The design is based on the concept of the recycle symbol, a perpetual, nonstop triangular route. The metal volume comprises all designer spaces while the

concrete slabs host the storage and exhibition areas. The garbage collected in a storage room, is categorized in sections, based on their substance. This garbage then becomes the property of deisgners who use it as they choose. The finished works are displayed throughout the Agora. The exterior space is given to the public, working as an alley in the highly-densed city of Athens.

Summer Extreme Week

Winter

Autumn

Extreme A building’s envelope plays a Typical primary role in Week Week shielding and screening the building from external environmental factors. Although building facades have always been designed in order to respond to climatic conditions, digital fabrication and computational design software have contributed to the enrichment of this perspective. This paper researches how to apply smart geometries and computationally generated patterns to shading systems of existing office buildings in order to create an efficient envelope that provides better indoor quality and give a unique form to the building.

08:00

The idea presupposes that every point on a building skin is singular and that a building’s performance can be optimized if each component is adapted to its unique position or circumstance. Specifically, it is investigated how the collaboration between environmental simulation and computation can generate patterns that can be used in facade optimization through shading surfaces. It is also claimed that the integration of daylighting into the design phase, through design tools and computation, results in the improved performance of daylight harvesting and therefore tackles issues of human comfort and energy efficiency.

Metafarm Cathedral Blank Space Fairy Tale Category: Competition Collaborator: C. Lona Year: 2014

The brief of the competition asked for the reinterpretation of architecture throught the narrative of a fairy tale. Our proposal twists the concept of religion by converting Glasgow’s cathedrals into a network of urban farming clusters. Faith has therefore acquired a new meaning, in a world where survival is the only thing in which one can believe...

Viva Skyscraper eVolo Skyscraper Category: Competition Collaborators: S.M.Cha, Y.Sato Year: 2014

Rocinha (little farm) is Latin America’s largest favela with almost 300.000 residents. It is found next to the city of Rio de Janeiro, almost 1km away from the sea, and is built on a steep hillside. The neighborhood is already a tourist attraction, something which is going to be intensified due to the World Cup 2014 and the Olympic Games 2016.

The skyscraper responds to the radical urban expansion of the favela and attempts to constitute a core for its further development. The proposal integrates its environment as it adopts some characteristics such as urban density and building modularity and at the same time establishes a dialogue with the challenging topography by attaching to the rock and resembling its curvilinear morphology. It is a vertical evolution of the horizontal urban reality. The programmatic function of the building combines housing units and farming spaces. There are 3 different housing typologies, able to host altogether up to 15,000 people. The families inhabiting the skyscraper are able to produce their own products and therefore reduce the nutrition costs for themselves or/and contribute to the family’s income by selling them to others. In this way, a sustainable concept of living is generated. A steel-framed network structure supports the skyscraper by linking it with the rock. Transportation as well as infrastructure are found in between.

+ oikia

Athens X 4 Category: Competition Collaborator: G&A Evriptiotis, A. Manisa, E. Stavraki, V. Vidali Status: Honorable Distinction Year: 2010

The Athensx4 competition brief was calling for the unification of four blocks into one. The proposal +oikia will become a prototype which should be repeated several times in Athens in order to provide the city with landscape and a place holder for social activities. We believe that the status quo, the present will be appreciated in the future for its qualities so we start by imprinting the buildings' footrpints, their architecture, their program and their materials . All these will be expanded on our plot, the so-called cross. We use a 0.60 x 0.60m grid which originates from the sidewalk's paving. This last when multiplied creates benches, tables, market counters, shelters and three-dimensional layers of activity. In order to enter +oikia you get through 4 gates placed at the beginning of the cross. The dense vegetation behind the gate won't let the user take a look in what is happening inside this mystic garden. This new block b ecomes a prototype which imports the meaning of the social neighborhood This will be called from now on +oikia.

Korres store

Korres Uni Lab Category: Research Collaborators: ... Year: 2013

The brief was calling for rebranding and redesigning the company’s retail stores worldwide. The case-study store should not exceed 50 sm and 50.000$. Our team proposed a concept store, located in Paris, based on a triptych: Greece, Nature, Science. We see Korre’s origin, the island of Naxos, as the simeio anaforas, so we design a store based on Aegean architecture. White stucco?, raw wood, a traditional wardrobe, a colorful carpet of tiles and rakokazano-the brand’s beloved logo- as lighting source. We believe that the whiteness of the store’s shell, combined with traditional greek elements makes the company’s retail stores being unique, totally rekognizable.

3D components, primitive elements, tools,

The X|A workshop began with a series of tutorials on Autodesk’s Maya software and continued with the development of a personal design project on the topic of ‘‘Prosthetic Kitsch’’. My proposal, ‘Skin Pavillion’, is a temporary modular construction, placed in a park. After a research on plastic surgery and aesthetic operations, I made an investigation on skin behavior, stretching techniques as well as hanging and piercing methods. The outcome was implementing all these case-studies in the final proposal. A pink plastic membrane, permits natural light to enter the structure and create an intense atmosphere. Rigid, reflective components- a reference to the medical tools- interract with the surface in order to create a sheltered space underneath.

The thin plot leads to the need for the apartments to focus mainly on the front and back side of the apartment building. Here, generous balcony space and warmer materials are used to create a pleasant external space in one of the greener areas of Athens.

Black Milk

Graphic Design, Concept Category: Personal Collaborators: A.Kyriakakis, NTUA Theatre Team Year: 2011

Black Milk is a theatrical-dance play, perceived by Georgios Karampelas and Antonis Kyriakakis and performed by the N.T.U.A theatre team in 2012. The storyline is about a man, living in a totalitarian regime, who comes across love, an emotion that carries him away and simultaneously wakes him up. The show is played behind a white screen. With the aid of a searchlight, the body figures are outlined on the screen, giving a much stronger impression of body movement and of theatrical action. The concept for the poster design is based on the aesthetic principles of the play. It is monochrome and abstract. It visualises the title and provides the necessary information for the show. You can watch the Black Milk on Youtube:
