Lay into “Once Upon a Mattress” AMERICA FLORES-HERNANDEZ ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR

As the new semester has come in full swing, the theater department has been busy preparing its latest musical production “Once Upon a Mattress.” Under the direction of instructor, John Tourtellotte, the musical comedy is based on “The Princess and the Pea” fairytale, about a princess being unable to sleep on multiple mattresses because of a pea under them. “It’s a very wacky show,” said Tortellotte, “the music has a very jazzy Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald type feel to it, but the sense of humor is silly, almost like Monty Python.” The main storyline focuses around a prince who needs to marry a princess quickly in order for his

whole kingdom to be safe from harm. However, the Queen mother gives almost impossible tests to each princess that comes forward to compete and all fail. When an unusually out of place princess arrives, she could finally be the one the kingdom has been waiting for. “The music, choreography, and scenes in this show is something we have not done before and are very excited to show the audience,” said PAM senior, Anthony Bravo. “The energy is extremely high and rehearsals are fun all around, looking forward to opening night.” The musical marks his last production as a student.

Richard Bloom awards school library a check

Bloom visits Milton’s economics class and gives school $5,000 JOAN KIM EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Assemblymember Richard Bloom visited Hollywood High on Jan. 31 to talk to Leighton Milton’s economics class as well as presenting a $5,000 check to the school library. Richard Bloom, assemblymember of the 50th district of Los Angeles since 2012, represents areas from Santa Monica to Hollywood. He first introduced his position in the California Assembly and taught students how members represent certain communities, their terms and what an assemblymember does. He then talked to students about issues that he thought were significant such as providing housing opportunities to those in need, animal welfare, environment related issues, and providing hearing aids for adolescents. “He’s so passionate

about the bills he’s advocating. I felt like he actually cares about the community. I asked questions that need to be tackled more in the community.”,said SAS Senior Matthew Herrera. The Assemblymember has previously passed legislation in order to provide housing for people who do not have a proper home. “ We are currently working on the needs of people who are on the street. We help 130 people every day to find affordable housing,” said Bloom. Since Los Angeles’ housing median increased 4.1% in 2019 (Los Angeles Times) and rent prices are increasing, Richard Bloom has passed legislation such as the ‘Affordable Rental Housing Preservation Act.’

In 1972, I was a senior at Fairfax High and since the voting age was lowered to 18, I had the opportunity to vote.” At the end of Bloom’s presentation, the library received a $5,000 check. “Last time we used grants for technology, however, this year we are using the grant for books. Culinary class returns to campus JANET GONZALEZ CHRONICLE REPORTER

This spring semester, David Papa is teaching a culinary class during 5th period. To the school’s surprise they had a full class within a few days of announcing the new course. Many students in Hollywood High School were ecstatic and eager to sign up for the course. So far the class is just going over the basics using the textbook and learning how to use certain cooking utensils, what not to do in the

kitchen, and even went on a small tour through the room and learning where everything was.The class is being held in room 127 in the NMA building, not in the cafeteria. “The class is okay so far, I’m just looking forward to when we actually start cooking,” said PAM Senior Katerin Trejo.“I got excited when I heard about the class and I’m actually happy I got in quickly.”

Get your gloves on for the new CSI Class CRISTAL RINCON WEBSITE EDITOR

Among the new classes coming to Hollywood this year comes a unique Crime Scene Investigation experience. Classes will be able to learn the ins and outs of criminal investigation in a 5 week program that is set to begin in April. The class will feature one central crime that will serve as its focus. A crime scene is set, using elements such as crime tape, fingerprints, and footprints, which will all be analyzed just as it would be in a professional investigation. Actors will come in as detectives to lead three groups―forensics, prosecution, and defense. The program will culminate in a trial with a judge, so students can showcase what they learned. Principal Dr. Mary

Reid was inspired by her niece’s journey as a lawyer when she first introduced CSI to her previous school. She said seeing her previous students blossom and find parts of themselves they didn’t know they had, made bringing this program to Hollywood a goal for her. She believes that by introducing this program, students will learn valuable lessons that will benefit them for their future, but also serve as encouragement to increase attendance. “This could be something fun and exciting that gives them purpose,” said Dr. Reid. Set details in terms of what classes will be involved or where the program will take place are still yet to be decided.

STAFF EDITORIAL: Jumping into a new decade

As we leave 2019 in the dust the new decade has begun. So far it has been a sad start to the year. With tragic events such as fires in Australia and recent events of the loss of my idols Kobe Bryant and his child Gianna. Words can not begin to express how the new year has brought a big mood swing to many. You do not have to love the game of basketball to know of Kobe Bryant, from being a loving father and an exceptional athlete. From the start of his career playing as a teenager in highschool going straight into the NBA

draft, and being drafted into the Charlotte Hornets. To the end of his career highlighting the fact he is a five time NBA final champion, two time NBA finals, and scoring sixty-seven points in the last game of his career had the world in awe. A great tribute was given to Kobe during the recent grammy awards when they held a spotlight on his jerseys throughout the whole awards. During the Grammys, singer/ songwriter Billie Eillish won five awards as well as her brother Finneas winning several awards. Although many believe the Grammy awards

this year were not up to the hype. I believe there is still much to come from this year to the next. At Hollywood High, many events have arisen. With events such as our principal providing the sidewalk to be more suitable for those passing by. As well as funding for programs during and after school. Last minute gifts that can awe someone’s heart JASMIN KIM COPY EDITOR

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Have you prepared a gift for your special someone yet? If not, here are some ideas for your last-minute Valentine’s Day gift: Flowers are always a great gift to give. They brighten any space with color and liveliness. Lilies, hydrangeas, sunflowers, and tulips are all in season in the month of February. Roses are also a classic option to choose for your gift. Chocolates or candy is a good choice for anyone who has a sweet tooth. Chocolate roses could be

a way to incorporate both flowers and sweets into your gift. Hershey Kisses and candy hearts can be a festive addition to your gift as well. You can never go wrong with your special someone’s favorite candy. A heartfelt letter is a sentimental gift to give anyone on any occasion. Pour your feelings out into a piece of paper to express your love this Valentine’s day. Sincerity is always appreciated and a letter is more personal than sweets or flowers. Take your special someone out on a date! While material gifts are nice,

memories are also an impactful gift to give. Spending time together on a day like Valentine’s Day will surely leave romantic memories in the both of you. Giving and receiving gifts is nice but stressing over them ruins the special aspect of gifts. The best part of gifts is the thought and sentiment behind it so do not feel like you are obligated to give or receive a grand gift. Appreciate the gift for what is means and not what it is.

How to enjoy Valentine’s Day as a single person SIDNEY GONZALEZ NEWS EDITOR

Valentine’s Day is an internationally recognized holiday in which people celebrate love. Couples go on dates and gift each other trinkets like chocolates and flowers. Twenty Poems of Love and a Desperate Song By: Pablo Neruda I like you when you’re quiet because you seem distracted and you hear me from afar and my voice doesn’t touch you, it appears as if your eyes have flown away and it seems like a kiss would close your mouth. Since all things are filled with my soul, you arise from those things, full of my soul. Sleepy butterfly, you look like my soul, and you look like the word melancholy.

I like you when you’re quiet and you seem distant and you seem to be lamenting, a butterfly cooing, and you hear me from afar and my voice doesn’t reach you. Let me be silent with your silence. Let me to talk to you also with your silence clear as a lamp, simple as a ring, you look like the night, quiet and full of stars; your silence, another star, so distant and natural.

I like you when you’re quiet because you seem distracted, distant and sorrowful as if you had died; a word then, a smile would be enough and then I’m happy, happy that it isn’t true.

Finally it is going to be ready to use once again, construction is finishing up with the tiles of the pool Assistant principal Pacino Furioso says in the ideal situation, “Hopefully, the pool will be complete by Feb. 14, and will be open for use on the following Monday, Feb. 17.” People may wonder why it has taken so long, it is because, “Projects like this require many people to approve it and check for safety requirements, and when something is wrong, the project has to be redone.” says Mr. Furioso. Swim captain Noor Mansour said, “I feel our team will benefit a lot because it will allow us to not worry about our pool situation and we can focus more on our actual skills instead of where we’re going to swim.” Mansour added, “Yes, I’m very excited because we’ve been promised this for two years and it’s finally happening.”The pool is finally being reopened after two years and will be ready for the school. Other meet dates here in Hollywood are March 13, March 20, March 27, April 2, and April 17. The last meet will be here in Hollywood against notorious rivals the Bernstein Dragons on April 24. “We had a strong season last year with a lot of good returners and a lot of potential in both the girls and boys team, I feel very confident we will defend our title,” said Coach Kenny Valencia about how he feels about how their season will be. Valencia, an alumnus, said “most meets are here in Hollywood because we have six lane weather track and some schools don’t have track and field this season due to some construction in some schools.” Valencia, is equally confident about their chances of becoming league champs again. “If we get all of our returners to come back this year and have everyone come to practice I feel one hundred percent of us taking the league champ title once again.” Isaac Mendez

RIP to the Legend KOBE VIOLETA TORRES SPORTS EDITOR

Nicole Agustin explains how it felt to attend the memorial for Kobe Bryant at the Staples Center. “I feel like a part of me was happy because cause I was able to be surrounded by all of his fans and so many people were there and it was really crowded but it was really heartwarming for everyone to come together and bring posters or basketballs and some people even brought their own shoes in honor of him. It was really sad though because nobody was smiling and everyone was staring at the memorial with sad faces in silence and you would hear sniffles. There was a point when it hit 8:24 and everybody started chanting for Kobe.” She told the Crimson Chronicle what an impact he had on her life. “He was so passionate at what he did and he made me love watching basketball, and I don’t think there will ever be someone who loves the game as it is as he did.” Nicole Kaye Agustin, SAS Senior

“When I found out, I thought it was fake and I looked it up immediately and realized it was true and I went to put on my Laker shirt. He was the reason I played basketball. My dad was a Laker fan since before I was born and once I was born, he would always put me in Laker fits.” said Jacob Jimenez. Jimenez spoke about Kobe Bryant’s legacy and how his death affects his team. “It’s going to make us grind harder. If you play basketball the one name you know is Kobe. I think it’s going to unite the city more, everyone is going to come close together because a lot of people love Kobe, it’ll be hard at first because it’ll take time to process.” Jacob Jimenez, SAS senior (basketball player)

“I found out on my team’s group chat and I immediately started crying. He was my idol, my inspiration, he was like my superhero. I play basketball like every day and I have posters of him in my room so it was tough because I base my mentality on him.” Although Bryant’s death was unfortunate, his fans keep his legacy alive and find inspiration during these dark times. “I’m hoping my team and I can take this and cherish every moment on the court and i’m just hoping we all come to realize that we’re not all going to get our final moments on the court and we have to be grateful about being able to step on and off the court.” Gary Lira, SAS sophomore(basketball player)
