International Service-Learning Internship Country: Nicaragua Location: El Sauce Campus: SUNY Geneseo Term(s): Winter, Summer Language of Instruction: Spanish Program Description: This unique program provides students the opportunity to apply their spirit of volunteerism and their education in El Sauce, an economically disadvantaged community in Nicaragua. Program participants are guided and supervised as they live and work alongside residents of El Sauce. Service learning opportunities are available in the following areas: computer education, economic development, ecotourism, teaching English for adults or children, health services, marketing, small business development, youth education, and youth art and recreation. Students may spend two weeks in El Sauce during the January intersession. During the summer, students have the option of spending three, six or nine weeks in El Sauce. Students participating in the summer program are required to take a one-credit course about Nicaragua during the spring semester. Eligibility Requirements: Students must be in good academic standing with an acceptable disciplinary record. Spanish proficiency at the intermediate level or higher is recommended but not required. Peru, South America Country: Peru Location: Peru Campus: Suffolk County Community College Term(s): Summer 2013 (6/9-6/30) Language of Instruction: English Program Description: Experience the wonders of the Andes in this in-depth program spanning Peru"s multilayered pre-Inca, Inca and Spanish colonial past. Travel through Peru"s uniquely different regions while enjoying indepth tours of important Inca sites like Cusco, Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu. Marvel at the flight of Andean condors at the rim of Colca Canyon and enjoy the hospitality of indigenous people on the island of Amantani, situated over 12,000 feet above sea level on Lake Titicaca. Visit the Spanish colonial cities of Lima and Arequipa as we follow the path of the Conquistadors through the crown jewel of their New World Empire. POLAND Experiencing the New Europe Country: Poland Location: Wroclaw Campus: SUNY Brockport Term(s): Summer Language of Instruction: English Program Description: Experiencing the New Europe is a month long interdisciplinary summer program that explores how large processes of geopolitical change-the aftermath of World War II, ethnic and national upheavals, the fall of Communism, democratization, European integration-play out in the local setting of a European city and its inhabitants. The interactive curriculum combines classroom study with travel in Central Europe. The home base of the program is the beautiful and lively city of Wroclaw, located in southwest Poland. Excursions in Krakow, Prague and Berlin and the Auschwitz-Berkenau concentration camps are among the many unforgettable learning experiences. The program consists of two interdisciplinary courses. The first course, "Explorations of Modernity" explores the culture and collective experience of people in Central Europe. The second course, "Urban Research Seminar" introduces students to methods of qualitative ethnographic research, which will then be used to study the changes in Wroclaw's urban life and multiethnic culture. Examining architectural remains and stories of the city's inhabitants, students spend most of their time outside of the classroom. PERU Summer Spanish Language and Culture Studies Country: Peru Location: Cuzco Campus: SUNY Geneseo Term(s): Summer Language of Instruction: Spanish Program Description: This program is designed to provide students seeking to fulfill Spanish language requirements at the beginning, intermediate or advanced levels the experience of studying the language, and Hispanic cultures and literatures in one of the most ethnically, historically and naturally rich regions of the world. Program participants receive one or two field trips (depending on the duration of the program) that complement the academic component of the program and enrich their experience of the culture of PerĂş, the Andean regions and the Hispanic world. These outings highlight different elements of the region, including its topography, pre-Columbian heritage, colonial past, religious tradition, arts and folklore.
