History and Philosophy of the Olympic Games Country: Greece Location: Various Campus: SUNY Brockport Term(s): Summer Language of Instruction: English Program Description: This course involves a two week educational experience in Greece. During this experience, students will learn about the history and philosophy of the Olympic Games, both ancient and modern. The program includes visits to major historical landmarks in Athens as well as the venues of the 1896 and 2004 Olympic Games, the Hellenic Olympic Committee and the International Olympic Academy. The course also includes visits to the sites of the four ancient Panhellenic Games (Corinth, Delphi, Nemea and Olympia). In Delphi, Nemea and Olympia students will run in the same stadia as the ancient athletes. The content of the program is made up of the trip itself along with discussions of assigned readings, documentaries and lectures. One of the world's most impressive coral reef systems is found in the western Caribbean, along the coast of Central America, and one of the most accessible parts of this reef is found close to shore on the island of Roatan, the largest of the three Bay Islands, about 30 miles off the coast of Honduras. Hands-on, experiential educational opportunity; An alternative to the usual oncampus course and total-immersion in the subject and environment. Study the biology and ecology of the living reef and live organisms, rather than learning about them from books and pictures; learn about the organisms that form the reef and live on it. It will provide students the opportunity to experience the energy of Tibet’s Buddhist teaching and artistic life as it adapts its traditions to the challenges of exile.
