Our Mission Letter from Mary Gunn & Carol Kamin Read to Succeed Strategic Plan Programs & Impact Snapshot of What We Did in 2014… AARP Experience Corps Volunteers Sponsors & Supporters Treasurer’s Statement Financials Board, Staff & Full-Time Volunteers

Our Mission‌. Generations Incorporated strives to improve the literacy skills of young children through Grade 3. We also provide meaningful opportunities to older adults who serve as literacy volunteers in our partner schools and after-school programs in low-income communities.

2

Dear Friends, What an amazing year! The first year of implementation of our strategic plan, Read to Succeed, has resulted in the greatest transformation ever of Generations Incorporated. Our new mission statement tells the story: Improve the literacy skills of young children through Grade 3. To do this, we engage older adults from the community as literacy tutors. This change in mission very intentionally shifts our priority to early literacy, while maintaining our unique intergenerational program model. Nearly 75% of Boston Public Schools’ 4th grade students are not proficient in literacy, and we believe our work should start with the youngest children in school. Today, the majority of our resources are directed at children in kindergarten and first grade, helping them to meet important benchmarks. Most of the year was spent in dialogue with educators and researchers, redesigning the program models, and shifting to a much stronger, more intense focus on sustained literacy work with young children. Simultaneously, we worked to strengthen our financial position. This began with a new financial model that helps us to better manage our resources. Our Board of Directors worked extremely hard to build a reserve fund that helps to stabilize our organization. Sustainability is always a priority, and we are therefore guided by the goals of increased earned revenues and individual donor income. The 265 older adults who volunteer with us are the change agents who will produce the desired outcomes. They are unrelenting in their belief in and work with the children. They share our belief that if we work with the youngest children in schools we can move the literacy needle forward. As we prepare to launch Year 2 of Read to Succeed, the theme of the year will be EXECUTION. We want to thank you for your incredible support. The many individual donors, institutions, program partners, volunteers, staff, board members, teachers, and hundreds of stakeholders are responsible for our success. Profound thanks to all of you. Sincerely,

Carol Kamin, President

Treasurer’s Statement Generations Incorporated experienced a robust year in fiscal year 2014. Read to Succeed challenged us to create a Board Designated Reserve Fund and we are happy to report a large contribution to the Fund this year with a surplus of $81,636. The goal for the Fund is for it to reach two months of operating funds by the end of the plan in fiscal year 2016. While our surplus grew significantly from 2013, our overall expenses and revenues were down 11% and 8% respectively. This too is in response to Read to Succeed, as we said goodbye to our full-time AmeriCorps program, and the funding associated with that grant, and directed more responsibility to our volunteers. In addition, we are happy to report improvements on our Balance Sheet. Our unrestricted net assets increased from $127 thousand to $209 thousand (65%). This is a direct result of the growth of the Board Designated Reserve Fund. We also saw an increase of funds secured for future years, with nearly $300 thousand secured for fiscal years 2015 through 2018. In closing, 2014 was a strong year and we thank our supporters for your generous support as we move into the next year of Read to Succeed. Sincerely,

John A. McCullough, Board Treasurer
