Community Liason Today, 13% of the population in the US is over the age of 65 and the number is rising as more baby boomers approach their golden years. Regardless of one’s physical and mental aptitude the reality of aging is that for many of us, even the simplest of tasks may be more of a struggle, as nature takes its toll. Perhaps harder than even the task at hand is asking for help. After all family and friends are not always geographically available or often the hustle and bustle of juggling with their own nuclear family and work leads to time constraints and limited resources. As a result seniors’ needs are not always met. Hand in Hand for Seniors, Inc., A 501 (c) 3 Non-profit organization in Huntington NY, provides a much needed support system to fill in many of the gaps by providing services to seniors that help living alone be less daunting. Some of the services and resources available by Hand in Hand for Seniors for a small annual membership fee are: • Access to transportation for medical appointments, shopping, banks, etc… • Computer orientation and training basics • Life planning and case management services • Minor home repairs and safety inspections • Access to social and cultural events and more… This membership based program provides personalized attention given by volunteers who want to reward our seniors for the contributions they have brought their community. More important than the valuable services and resources available by Hand in Hand for Seniors, are the friendships made and the peace of mind of knowing that help may be only a phone call away.
