DIE PRODUKTION VON SOLARENERGIE IN BERLIN UND DEREN TRANSFER IN DIE GESELLSCHAFT Im Jahr 2007 trafen wir Lidia Benavides zum ersten Mal. Aus diesem Treffen entwickelte sich eine Zusammenarbeit und eine Einladung zum vierter stock Residency-Programm. Im selben Jahr begann sie ein neues Arbeitskonzept, das sich auf die künstlerische Darstellung von Solarenergie bezieht. Leitmotiv für Benavides Werke war und ist die Verarbeitung von Licht. Benavides ist bekannt für ihre sehr abstrakt wirkenden Arbeiten, in denen sie auf faszinierende Weise Lichtspiele abbildet, die an Malerei erinnern.

SOLAR POWER PRODUCTION IN BERLIN AND ITS TRANSFER TO SOCIETY We met Lidia Benavides for the first time in 2007. This meeting led to a collaboration and an invitation to join the vierter stock residency programme. That same year, she began with a new work concept dealing with the artistic representation of solar energy. The guiding motif of Benavides’ work was and continues to be the treatment of light. Benavides’ is known for her highly abstract work, in which she shows the nature of light which is reminiscent of painting in a fascinating way.

LA PRODUCCIÓN DE ENERGÍA SOLAR EN BERLÍN Y SU TRANSFERENCIA A LA SOCIEDAD Nuestro primer encuentro con Lidia Benavides se produjo en 2007. A partir de entonces surgió una colaboración y una invitación al programa en residencia de vierter stock. Ese mismo año la artista comenzó a desarrollar un nuevo concepto de trabajo, centrado en la representación artística de la energía solar. El eje central de la obra de Lidia Benavides ha sido y es el tratamiento de la luz. Lidia Benavides es conocida por sus trabajos de un marcado carácter abstracto, en los que refleja de manera fascinante la naturaleza de la luz que evoca lo pictórico.

Ähnlich wie bei Wissenschaftlern, gehört Feldforschung zum Entstehungsprozess ihrer Werke. Während ihres Aufenthalts in Berlin im Juli 2011 hat Benavides viele Solaranlagen auf den Dächern und im Umland der Stadt besucht. Damit verknüpft sie in einem kreativen Prozess Kunst, Wissenschaft und Technologie, ähnlich wie in einem Science-Fiction Roman. Ihre Faszination für das Genre ist Inspirationsquelle und gleichzeitig auch Antriebskraft für die Umsetzung ihrer künstlerischen Ideen. Noch vor wenigen Jahren war Energiegewinnung aus Sonne kaum rentabel oder wurde sogar als utopisch angesehen. Heutzutage ist diese Technologie Wirklichkeit, mit einer großartigen und zukunftsorientierten Perspektive weltweit. In ihrer aktuellen Serie “Berlin Solar Energy Production” präsentiert Lidia Benavides die neue Selbstverständlichkeit einer Technologie, die bis vor kurzem reines WunschAs for scientists, field research is part of the creation process in her works. During her July 2011 stay, Benavides visited a range of rooftop solar installations in Berlin and the surrounding countryside. Similar to a science fiction novel, she links art, science and technology in a creative process. Her fascination for the genre is a source of inspiration and also a driving force behind the implementation of her artistic ideas. Only a few years ago, energy generated from the sun was considered to be less profitable or even utopian. But now this technology has become a reality, ushering in a spectacularly forward-looking perspective around the globe. In her current series, “Berlin Solar Energy Production”, Lidia Benavides presents the new matter-of-fact nature of a technology which until recently was merely considered

En un proceso análogo a la investigación de los científicos, el trabajo de campo forma parte del desarrollo creativo de sus obras. Durante su estancia en Berlín en julio de 2011, Lidia Benavides visitó diferentes instalaciones y plataformas solares situadas en algunos tejados de Berlín y sus alrededores. De esta manera une en el proceso creativo el arte, la ciencia y la tecnología, como en una novela de cienciaficción. Su fascinación por este género es a la vez fuente de inspiración y motor de su obra artística. No hace demasiados años, la obtención de energía solar era poco rentable o se consideraba utópica, en la actualidad se está convirtiendo en una realidad tangible, con una espectacular proyección futura a nivel mundial. En su más reciente proyecto “Berlin Solar Energy Production”, Lidia Benavides muestra esta nueva presencia natural de una tecnología, que hasta hace bien poco era un

wishful thinking. While this new series is less abstract than her older work, it shows more representative force and concretion by documenting places in which solar energy is generated. Through the painterly treatment of the images and modifications through digital colours, Benavides places the aesthetic characteristics of the technology in the foreground. Benavides’ art turns the supposed bleakness of technical installations into an inviting and enticing experience, which allow us to look optimistically toward the future, focusing on its positive significance for the societies of our time.

1971 IN MADRID GEBOREN, WO SIE LEBT UND ARBEITET. Promotion mit Europäischem Doktorgrad in Bildender Kunst an der Madrider Universidad Complutense, wo sie zur Zeit als Lehrkraft tätig ist. Lidia Benavides begann ihre Laufbahn als visuelle Künstlerin im Jahre 1993, erforschte das Licht als visuelle Sprache und schaffte zahlreiche kreative Projekte (Malereien, Zeichnungen, Skulpturen, Installationen, Video und Fotografie), die in über 78 individuellen und kollektiven Ausstellungen bekannt wurden, mit Publikationen in öffentlichen Einrichtungen, in nationalen und internationalen Kunstmessen wie ARCO, Paris Photo, CIGE Peking, Dfoto San Sebastian, Valencia.art; und in prestigeträchtigen Kunstgalerien wie die Galerie Estiarte, gegenwärtig die Galerie Pilar Serra in Madrid. In jüngster Zeit hat sie interdisziplinäre Forschungsvorhaben durchgeführt, in denen sie Kunst mit Wissenschaft und Technologie verbindet, darunter das nach einem Aufenthalt im Astrophysikalischen Institut der Kanarischen Inseln entstandene Projekt
