Welcome to the new updated and refreshed edition of The Future Magazine. It’s been an exciting time working on the new look and the team have worked incredibly hard listening to the amazing feedback given to them by the most important people, you, our reader, we really do value your opinion, so thank you. The first edition of The Future launched back in 2002, where many of you may remember it as ‘Future in Store’. It was then rebranded to what it is today. It’s a great magazine produced completely in house by the team at Gem Creative (Gem’s in-house creative agency) primarily to focus on new products, promotions and gaming releases.

We talk to Gem’s newly appointed Sales Director, Neil Willerton Tell us about your job role. My primary position is to take Gems sales function forward into 2012 and beyond, consolidate exiting relationships and look for new areas of opportunity, Gem has a very experienced sales team and I’m very lucky to have such a professional and enthusiastic team around me. I want to work alongside them to create a platform that allows the wider teams to succeed and deliver excellence for all our customers.

What challenges do you think 2012 will bring? 2011 has been a tough year in the home entertainment and PC market place, the macro economic outlook for 2012 will create a challenging environment for distributors, vendors and retailers alike.

What do you hope to bring to the table that may differ to anything demonstrated before? Using my experience I’d like to provide a platform that our sales team can push on from, having spent 10 years category managing the PC consumables area in the grocery sector I’d like to bring the same disciplines and sales out mentally that enables growth for both the vendor and retailer, as delivering the stock in full and on time is only half the story.

What do you see the positives are, working with Gem? We have some exciting plans for 2012 to really push Gem’s point of difference and our focus will be on improving the sales out of our vendor and retailer partners by creating new routes to market and offering an end to end single point of contact solution be that retail, e-tail or digital.

In a flat/declining market you have to offer a genuine point of difference to succeed where ever you are in the supply chain.

As I touched on earlier delivering a box is a given, creating real value for our partners is the aim in 2012 as it’s the only way we will meet and overcome what will be an interesting and challenging year for retail.

News Special The annual Consumer Electronics Show represents one of the key showcase events for the tech industry, and Microsoft once again made its presence felt with a raft of updates and announcements covering Xbox, Kinect and Windows. Kristan Reed reports on the biggest news from the show.

Xbox 360 maintains dominance in 2011 2011 was the biggest year in the Xbox 360's six year history, Microsoft has revealed. During the company's keynote address, the Redmond giant announced that the total worldwide sales for the console have now topped an impressive 66 million. As well as selling 16 million Xbox 360 consoles around the world during 2011, Microsoft also managed to increase the Xbox Live membership from 30 million to nearly 40 million active members during the year. But the good news for Xbox didn't end there, with the news that another ten million Kinect sensors shifted worldwide during 2011, taking the total worldwide installed base to 18 million. Keynote host Ryan Seacrest commented: Ten years ago, if I were to walk up to somebody in the street and say 'Xbox' to them, they'd probably give me a blank stare. But now Xbox is at the forefront of games and entertainment The company also revealed that Xbox 360 was the top-selling console in North America during 2011, and that almost 800,000 systems were sold on Black Friday alone, making it one of the must-have gifts for Christmas. "No compromise" Windows 8 shown Microsoft also used the CES platform to deliver an update on its next generation Windows 8 operating system. Using the slick 'Metro'-style interface used on Xbox 360 and Window Phones, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer confidently described Windows 8 as a "no compromise experience." One of the most amazing phenomena in our business has been the way that the Windows PC has constantly changed and reinvented and spurred other technology innovations. Over 3 billion Windows PCs are in use around the planet Ballmer commented. "People don't want to compromise. Nobody wants to give up on their desktop when they moved to notebooks. We don't give up anything. With Windows 8 we've re-imagined Windows. It will give a no-compromise experience." One of the most striking elements of new look Windows 8 is the new Start screen, with large tiles giving users shortcuts to useful applications. The OS promises to be flexible enough to use across devices as diverse as touch screen tablets, netbooks, laptops and traditional desktops systems with keyboard and mouse. A public beta for Windows 8 has been confirmed for February, with the online Windows Store also opening across the world, allowing users to try out a range of apps.

Sesame Street shows Kinect progress Microsoft unveiled the next step in the evolution of Kinect at CES 2012, through the release of 'playful learning experiences'. Due for released on Xbox 360 later in the year, Kinect Sesame Street TV will allow users to physically and vocally impact TV shows through the advanced capabilities of the Kinect sensor. Players will interact with their favourite characters on screen to help them with tasks, play in their world and learn together. Meanwhile Kinect Nat Geo TV "will transport kids and their families around the world to expand their knowledge while inspiring a sense of wonder and excitement." Players will be able to literally “reach in and explore�, and engage, play and learn as their living room is transformed into an animal habitat. Kinect for Xbox 360 is delivering a new kind of interactive learning experience that allows them to engage, interact and learn in entirely new ways said Microsoft in a statement. More Kinect Playful Learning products are expected to join the line-up later in the year. Xbox 360 growing as an entertainment platform The continuing evolution of the Xbox 360 as an all-round entertainment system was underlined by new data published at CES 2012. The number of hours spent watching video content on Xbox 360 increased 140 per cent year on year, while the number of people using entertainment apps on the console rocketed by more than 50 per cent from November to December alone.

Apps are what power the new experience in Windows 8, said Tami Reller, chief marketing officer for Microsoft.

Microsoft has also tied up new content partnerships with News Corp, Fox and IGN in the US, and now has more than 50 active and announced partnerships worldwide.

Microsoft has not officially confirmed a launch date for Windows 8, but it is expected to launch in late 2012.

"More live TV and on-demand TV will be lighting up Xbox 360 consoles around the globe this year," promised Microsoft.

ive years on from GRAW 2, Ubisoft returns to one of its most-loved series with the highly anticipated release of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier on all major formats.

sees players lead Sergeant John Kozak and his veteran team on a globe-trotting adventure through eight spectacular locales, from the heat and dust of Africa to the icy Arctic Circle.

Future Soldier also promises "thrilling and innovative" online multiplayer, and features ten multiplayer maps, as well as four games modes including the classic Siege mode and new exclusive game types.

The latest iteration promises to deliver an intense tactical action experience, featuring prototype high-tech weaponry in both its state-of-the-art single-player and multiplayer modes.

Players will slip behind enemy lines and take control of an elite four-man Ghost team, comprised of a commando, a sniper, a reconnaissance expert, and an engineer.

Kinect support is also promised, with the new Gunsmith customisation mode allowing players to create their own weapons choose using their voice and hand movements to replace triggers, barrels, stocks and more.

Future Soldier will offer players "a fresh gameplay experience, with an unparalleled level of quality that will excite long-time fans and newcomers alike." The game will take place in a near-future world where the Ghosts taking on a deadly ultra-nationalist force that has taken control of Russia, and is now looking to invade neighbouring nations.
