18

mockup version 1 Prior to GT joining the project, Thermal Systems completed a mockup using the building system ilustrated in the images at right. The system lacked the dexterity to create the smooth double-curves of the intended design. This was Thermal’s second attempt to create a suitable mockup. Uncertain how to proceed and deadlines bearing down, Thermal - led by Michael Lemieux - convinced the General Contractor, Ellis Don Construction, to hire GT in a joint-venture.

Once signed onto the project, GT launched immediately into a process of analysis and coordination. This process involved tuning the ribbon surfaces to reduce overcomplicated areas of double-curvature in addition to locating areas of clash with support and structural steel.

21

22

mock up version 2 With GT’s assistance Thermal Systems set out to build a third mock-up (this time building directly on the building itself). In an attempt to smooth the curvature of the surface and reduce flat zones between the trusses, a system of double-curved steet lateral tubing was introduced [1-7]. The results were less than satisfactory. There remained areas of flatness between the trusses and ‘oil-canning’ where the ribbon wrapped over the surface of a truss [8-9]. At this point it was finally agreed by all that a full system redesign was in order.

TRUSS PLANE SETOUT

ribbon tuning

as built survey

The first major chang was to bring on Radius Track, whose technology for creating couble-curved stud-profiles would allow the ribbon to smoothly transition from one truss to the next. This meant adjusting the driver-offsets of the ribbon to account for the depth of lateral hat-channel members [1]. This in turn meant that additional tuning had to be done on the ribbon surfaces to account for his change of depth [3]. The second major change was based on the discovery during the construction of the third mockup, that the support steel was built out of tolerance. Based on this realization the team moved forward using only as-built data of the steel locations from point-cloud surveys [2]. The third major change was to shift the orientation of the truss planes from ‘normal to the steel’ [4] to ‘normal to the ribbon surface [5]. This helped to smooth the final ribbon surface - but also led to changes in the truss design which are oulined on page 24.

truss template modeling

As a result of shifting the truss-planes from ‘normal to steel’ to ‘normal to ribbon surface,’ the brackets necessarily incorporated an additionbreak-bend [1]. In order to expedite truss modeling and fabrication, GT devised a new system of templates working in tight collaboration with the other members of the team [2-6]

construction scaffolding

Originally the Fraco-Tower (adjustable scaffolding) supports were fastened through the windows of the building. With deadlines looming and the building interior needing to be sealed, these supports had to be shifted so that they went through the ribbons of various levels. This of course required that the adjacent trussplanes be massaged to allow the Fraco supports to span to the building structural steel. To assist Thermal, GT coordinated this process in digital 3-D.

Before propogation of truss templates at each level GT conducted extensive analysis of the surfaces. This allowed the project team to locate problem areas and tune them out prior to truss propogation. It also allowed the team to get a look-ahead on the number of new templates needed for each level and thus better estimate time investment per level.

truss fabrication data extraction Extraction of the fabrication data for the trusses was a four part process that involved a mixture of manual and automated extraction. First, shop drawings were batchconverted from CAT drawing format to DWG (shown in images at right). The second step was to extract a DXF of each profile of each individual truss component. This was an automated/scripted process. The final two steps were the semi-automated process of extracting the varied bend angles for each truss bracket, and the material area calculations for each truss. These last were needed to assess the weight of the truss when loading it onto a FRACO lift on site.

truss setout points

The setout out points for the trusses were produced in the digital environment and surveyed onto the built support steel by Tronnes. On frequent occasions Tronnes was unable to attain suitable sight-lines for survey and in these instances GT provided running dimensionas along the steel for the crew on site to establish setout points [1 & 2].

3

45

46

truss and hat channel install data GT incorporated various systems to ensure a quick and easy installation process in the field. CAT-Part naming was carried seamlessly from the digital environment to the field [2-4] and names corresponded to physical locations [diagrams, page 47]. Furthermore, GT provided checkdimensions for workers in the field to ascertain that each truss was correctly oriented before locking it in to place with hat-channel and decking [1].
