LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER | DON’T LET OTHERS DEFINE YOU In our 2015 Readers Choice survey, we asked GDUSA’s huge graphic designer audience a potpourri of questions about who and what you admire, listen to, watch, read, download. As noted elsewhere, it is wondrous and scary how little you all agree with each other on high and low culture. We also asked for your “mantra” and, here, one theme dominated all others: Do Not Let Others Define You. Among the words you live by: “Don’t let other people write your script.” “Stop letting others blind you from your truth.” “Only you set your own limitations.” “People can only take from you what you allow.” “Don’t dim your light because others’ have sensitive eyes.” I’m beyond impressed because I don’t have a mantra, unless you count “I'll have fries with that” or “please pass the remote.” Celebrating self-actualization cannot be the sole aspiration in life — humility, community, norms, traditions are valuable, too — but it is a positive message and, perhaps, even a necessary one for creative professionals who expose themselves and their work to the judgement of others every day in every way. SLEEK, SEXY AND STALE GORDON KAYE IS THE PUBLISHER OF GDUSA Comments, suggestions and letters can be sent to gkaye @ gdusa.com.

On my way to Cuba last month (see below), I passed through the Delta Airlines Terminal C at LaGuardia Airport in New York. Inside, the refurbished facility is visually stunning and includes an iPad on every table in the waiting area. It presents a rare combination of style with easy access to the internet for information, updates and sustenance. Once I navigated the sleek interface, though, it was paradise lost. The breakfast bagel was stale and misshapen, the butter past its sale date, and two waiters converged with duplicate drinks. It reminded me, for the umpteenth time, that elegant design and cool technology can create an engaging user experiences but that alone does not deliver on the brand promise. Designers cannot control everything. But you can relentlessly remind brand owners that every touchpoint matters. TRAVEL RECOMMENDATION I just returned from Cuba and recommend the trip. Highly. One reason is that the island is on the cusp of change; it has had a unique development path, to say the least, and will never be the same once the American embargo ends. Another reason is that a visit crystallizes many existential issues we debate right here at home, including tensions between centralization and free markets, equal opportunity and equal outcomes, wealth creation and redistribution, individuality and community. No matter your leanings, it will make you think hard and challenge your beliefs. Finally, you will be grateful that, by accident of birth or fate or whatever, you are in the United States, where we are flawed, no doubt, but also possess the political space and economic resources to push and pull our way toward a more perfect union. THE NAKED TRUTH Many of you are entrepreneurs, a group known for “doing whatever it takes.” But how many would match the team at Viceroy Creative, née Mode Design Group? To publicize a name change and transition from luxury branding to full service, the principals posed stark naked. Creative Director Gabrielle Rein says the concept was sparked by, among others, the famous Sagmeister and Walsh nude partnership announcement and the edgy “Equinox Made Me Do It” campaign that shows fit models misbehaving. To prepare for their unveiling, the principals went on a strict 30-day diet and intensive physical training. On game day, photographer Robert Wyatt, who shot the Equinox campaign, kept things light to defuse awkwardness. For Rein, the upside was a fashionable, fun, provocative promotion. For GDUSA to try it, I see only downside unless, of course, there is a compelling body-positive mantra I can adopt. See more, literally, at designaddicts. viceroycreative.com

Makers, sellers and marketers are challenged as never before to convey the message, promote the brand, close the deal. Package design and related disciplines are increasingly the difference makers in advancing the brand and influencing the purchasing decision. The outstanding work showcased here — from 200 elite design firms, design departments or production companies — is testimony to this phenomenon. Our annual competition celebrates attractive graphics, of course, but more importantly the power of design to forge an emotional link with the buyer at the moment of truth.

FRESH | CRISP FEEL OF A MAGAZINE

WASHINGTON DC/BEVERLY HILLS CA The yearly Academy Awards gala is one of the film industry’s most highly anticipated

events, but much of what the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences accomplishes occurs behind-the-scenes. While conceiving and executing the creative direction for the Academy’s 2014 Annual Report, Design Army sought to shine the spotlight on the other 364 days of the year, highlighting the organization’s activities and advances. Inspired by the crisp feel of a magazine, the design firm created a visual representation of the Academy’s most exciting highlights and achievements from the past year. Each spread is a month-by-month journey that pays homage to keynote events: the first-ever Oscar Concert in February, October’s Hollywood Costume exhibition, and, of course, the television extravaganza. The overall design subtly incorporates the Academy’s familiar mark: first as a die-cut on the cover, and again as a series of tessellating, abstract forms throughout the report. Playful patterns, eye-catching infographics and typography, and a distinctive color palette that ties into the Academy’s graphic standard give the report a playful dynamism. Overlaid quotes from honorees, press, and members represent the Academy’s long reach and impact. http://app.oscars.org/our-year-2014

FRESH | SPOTIFY FACES THE MUSIC

NEW YORK NY/STOCKHOLM SWEDEN

Collins has shifted Spotify’s brand from its roots in tech and engineering to the music service embraced by millenials today. To achieve this, the New York design firm sought to visualize the visceral feeling and emotional “burst” that people feel when they connect with a song by developing a series of bursting shapes that can sit behind, or in front, of content. (The initial insight is said to come from a YouTube video of a baby who rocks her car seat to Katy Perry’s Dark Horse.) To add more energy, the palette is expanded from “Spotify green” to dozens of approved colors. And to address the challenge of using photography from thousands of musicians and bands — Spotify releases up to 20,000 songs a day — the designers reached back to the duotone look of album covers and concert posters of the 1960s. Collins’ executive creative director Leland Maschmeyer notes that duotones are so much a part of the identity that Brett Renfer, director of experience design, created a software program to automate the process. Explains Maschmeyer: “It draws from a very robust but select color palette and every image you output is always on brand. Not only is it fun, but it addressed another problem: Spotify has so much content to process that to have software do the heavy lifting was fantastic.” Collins’s co-founder Brian Collins says the project represents “our ideal, to work with brands that move faster than culture.” www.wearecollins.com

bringing new life to an architectural masterpiece: the Seagram Building in midtown Manhattan designed by Mies van der Rohe. Inspired by the building’s past, present and future, GHD partnered with artist Ruben Toledo to create a campaign that included a limited edition monograph illustrating the Seagram Building’s revitalization. Principal Graham Hanson says, “Ruben captured the Seagram Building in such a refreshing and compelling way. We not only utilized his finished illustrations but many of his preliminary sketches and studies as well. The watercolors and sketches in the finished book are a collective tribute to the vitality of the Seagram Building and a gorgeous blend of art, architecture and design.” www.grahamhanson.com

FRESH | CHANGING THE CONVERSATION

SEATTLE WA When Lane Bryant’s new CEO and president Linda Heasley

came to Hornall Anderson last year, she brought a strategic vision intended to revitalize the brand. The initial results: a branding initiative that is helping to change the conversation for the national clothing chain from “plus-size” to “her size,” celebrating the larger-sized woman. After creating materials to support the release of the client’s runway-inspired Sixth & Lane Collection, Hornall Anderson was again asked to tackle a challenge for Lane Bryant: create a sub-brand for a fashion-minded, multi-use activewear line, a sort of Lululemon or Athletica for the same “her size” spirit and market. The design solution features a name, Livi Active, as well as a brand identity system inclusive of logo, visual graphic assets, and a brand architecture that articulates overall benefit and ingredient information for specific garments. www.lanebryant.com/Livi

FRESH | STAYING AHEAD OF TOMORROW

NEW YORK NY MBLM has launched a new branding

initiative on behalf of AllianceBernstein, the global investment management firm. The client has evolved and expanded across asset classes and markets in recent years, and retained MBLM to create a brand that reflects its focus on keeping clients ahead of the curve. Among the elements is a brand promise and platform “Ahead of Tomorrow” from which to drive all marketing efforts; segmented messaging guides; and a transition of the brand from AllianceBernstein to AB. The yearlong initiative involved the agency and the firm’s executive leadership and global offices, and focused on ensuring that AB’s focus on the future plays a key role in building the brand. The program is comprehensive, extending into new identity systems, internal launch events, marketing collateral, a responsive web presence, and an advertising campaign across print, digital, and video. mblm.com/case-studies

FRESH | A MORE LITERARY NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE

NEW YORK NY A “graciously spaced” logo drawn by Matthew Carter

announces a comprehensive redesign of The New York Times Magazine. Under the guidance of design director Gail Bichler and art director Matt Willey, the venerable publication has been redesign to have a more literary and writerly quality, with heavier paper stock, a new suite of typefaces, new interior page designs, and, says editor-in-chief Jake Silverstein, “new ideas about the relationship between print and digital.” The fonts, by Henrik Kubel in collaboration with Willey, include slab serifs for headlines and block elements, as well as modern sans serifs and elegant serifed fonts. The interior layout, designed by Anton Ioukhnevets of GQ fame, is cleaner, with the number of columns reduced from 12 to 7 to create more white space, less symmetry, and allow the content breathe. As for its digital life, this also plays into the magazine’s more literary approach; the magazine content, paired with the new typefaces, are expected to make the magazine more attractive and readable as long-form content on the web. Heightened interest in the redesign, introduced in a recent special edition called “The Global Issue,” generated 120 print advertising pages, more than any issue since late 2007. www.nytimes.com/pages/magazine/index.html

developed the branding for Chicago’s Bicycle Sharing Program. The clients are The City of Chicago and Alta Bike Share. IDEO led the research and naming, and Firebelly the design and branding. The project required a name, trademark, visual identity and roll out in less than three months, as well as a standards guide that encompasses 40-plus touchpoints from bikes to stations to vans to stationery to events to website and more. The brand solution – Divvy – is intended to send a simple good natured message that bicyling is “practical, painless and convenient.” The double-V ligature indicates direction and motion, and in many streets across the world symbolizes the shared use of bikes and cars on the road. The primary typeface: GT Pressura. Says Firebelly’s Will Miller: “We wanted this project to honor the great civic pride in the people of Chicago. In the identity we do this with the row of four six-pointed stars found on the bike's chain lay and through Divvy’s primary color. These elements are derived from Chicago’s iconic flag.” www.behance.net/gallery/21107895/ Divvy-Chicagos-Bikeshare

FRESH | POPULAR BANKS ON BRAND UNION

MADRID SPAIN/NEW YORK NY Brand Union has strengthened the brand of a leading Spanish bank. Key elements include

simplification of the bank’s name from Banco Popular to just Popular; a new tagline to Firmly Forward; and a new positioning and visual identity symbolizing the mission of “boosting companies, people and society.” Pilar Domingo, Managing Director at Brand Union in Madrid says: “From the strategic platform to the visual and verbal identity, the new brand drives the future of the organization, strengthening its differentiation as a solid, experienced and professional bank, a bank to grow with, as the country grows again.” The identity itself takes on a typographic form in a bid to express the determination of an expert bank; the upward line device is said to reflect evolution and growth; and a graphical system of illustrations, pictures and type are intended to bring versatility to the visual language. The branding is being rolled out across all touchpoints, including a new commercial web presence and modernization of over 2,000 branches throughout 2015. www.brandunion.com

PEOPLE | NEW PRESIDENT FOR RISD

ROSANNE SOMERSON PRESIDENT, RHODE ISLAND SCHOOL OF DESIGN, PROVIDENCE RI Rosanne Somerson, a person with deep roots at her alma mater, has been named 17th president of Rhode Island School of Design. Her appointment comes after an extensive search during which the acclaimed designer and educator has been serving as interim president. “President Somerson is a gifted, inspiring leader with great integrity, humility and vision, and is the perfect fit for RISD,” notes Board of Trustees Chair Michael Spalter. “Her experiences as a RISD student, alumna, faculty member, department head, provost and interim president provide a depth of knowledge and almost instinctive understanding of the institution that no other candidate could match. She has also shown the collaborative leadership style and informed vision RISD needs to expand its role in advancing global innovation in the 21st century.” Prior to her appointment as interim president, Somerson served as provost from 2012–14, leading the effort to hone and rearticulate RISD’s academic vision. She was instrumental in the creation of the college’s current strategic plan. In that same period, Somerson also co-edited The Art of Critical Making: Rhode Island School of Design on Creative Practice (2013, Wiley) with Mara Hermano, a book that sheds light on what makes a RISD education meaningful and relevant. Somerson earned her BFA in Industrial Design from RISD in 1976, specializing in Furniture Design. president.risd.edu PHOTOGRAPH: JO SITTENFELD/RISD

HIGHEST HONORS 2015 TOP DESIGN SCHOOLS In our last edition, GDUSA published its annual Students To Watch roundup. The students were so interesting — and so many readers have asked to learn more about the schools which nurture them — that we’ve compiled a roundup of the institutions represented. We’ve enhanced that list with a handful of other favorites based on GDUSA and other surveys of designers, and with own subjective observations. The theme: education is more important than ever as the lines between the studio and the classroom, the office and the academy, the university and society, continue to blur. ACADEMY OF ART UNIVERSITY, SAN FRANCISCO With more than 18,000 students, Academy of Art University is the largest accredited private art and design university in the nation. Founded in 1929, the school and San Francisco have grown up together and served as mutual sources of inspiration and talent. Academy of Art University offers accredited AA, BA, BFA, B. Arch, MA, MFA and M. Arch degree programs in numerous areas of study, as well as continuing art education and pre-college programs for high school students. Flexible online degree programs are available in most areas of study, including graphic design. What makes the School of Graphic Design special is its emphasis on portfolio development. From the very first class, students are encouraged to create an exceptional portfolio that demonstrates their skill in traditional drawing and painting as well as their well-rounded education in typography, print and editorial design, branding, information design, web design and packaging. Academy of Art University is an accredited member of WASC, NASAD, CIDA (BFA-IAD, MFA-IAD) and NAAB (B. Arch, M. Arch). www.academyart.edu 36 G D U SA

While every thesis project is unique, there are several common features: a focus on methodology, the application of a visual method to studio work, and the organization of the work in a thoughtfully argued written document and catalogue raisonné, also known as the “Thesis Book.” Students applying to the preliminary-year program typically have relevant experience in a field of study outside design and demonstrate evidence of visual acuity. http://art.yale.edu/GraphicDesign G D U SA 45

PAPER + PR IN T | SPRING PAPER PROMOTIONS The number one take away from our 51st annual print reader survey: designers still value print for its classic strengths — tangibility, sensuality, credibility, a human connection. Reflecting this phenomenon, a growing number of high profile publishers, retailers, makers and services — IKEA, JC Penney, Airbnb, Uber, CNET, WebMD, Bonobos, Newsweek, Dominos, Victoria’s Secret, Costco, New York Times Magazine, among them — are investing in print to better connect with consumers. That print continues to perform is thanks in large part to a few great specifier paper mills who continue to produce promotions and resources that inspire, educate and inform.

A NOVEL REFERENCE

REVISITING THE CLASSICS

Yupo Corporation America continues to challenge creatives to Do it on YUPO™ by unveiling an updated swatch book that showcases the myriad techniques possible using the world leader in synthetic paper. On the outside, the square-spine, novel-sized swatch book is wrapped in striking images that showcase YUPO’s color reproduction. On the inside, easy-to-use tabbed chapters are spiral bound, which allows the sample book to lie flat for easier research and spec comparison. Many examples of innovative print techniques and applications on synthetic paper are featured including a glow in the dark feature that is a ‘must see.’ Contact Customer Service at 888-873-9876, or visit www.yupousa.com

Ten years after the introduction of the Rolland EnviroTM family, Rolland Enterprises launches a campaign to promote a new version of its Print and Copy papers, with an improved brightness of 92% G.E. The classic brand Rolland Enviro was the first North American uncoated fine paper product manufactured with 100% post-consumer fiber. As per Normand Champagne, Vice-President, Sales & Marketing, “The new campaign invites all our customers to rediscover the classics, whether in music, fashion, design or papermaking. The link between past and future is important for Rolland Enviro, strong in its achievements but confident about its future.” www.rollandinc.com

THAT OFFICIAL FEEL

TELL US A STORY

HEAD TO HEAD COMPARISON

Certificates, diplomas, invitations, awards, announcements and photo frames — some projects just need a parchment paper for that oldworld, authoritative, official feel. A new Mohawk Skytone swatchbook, the second in a series of nine newly redesigned swatchbooks by Hybrid of San Francisco, showcases a collection of twelve pastel shades that evoke the look and feel of genuine parchment paper. Mohawk Skytone is FSC certified, made with 30% postconsumer waste fiber and manufactured with windpower. The swatchbook was produced by Fey Printing. www.mohawkconnects.com/swatchbooks

Kallima® FSC Certified Coated Cover paperboard products, manufactured by Tembec, score high among graphic designers for print gloss and brightness. The Kallima Storyboard blog is a consistent and refreshing source of news, ideas, and information on print design. Some recent favorites include pieces on paper, print and literacy, adding variety to your branding, the staying power of direct mail, and mistakes to avoid when designing brochures. kallimapaper.com/news-and-blog/storyboard-blog

In 2013, a new coated paper, Sterling® Premium, was introduced into the marketplace. With its launch, customers were asked to “shift” how they have traditionally thought about premium coateds. The new promotion, Now Is The Time To SHIFT, showcases identical images printed on Sterling Premium alongside other known premium coated and uncoated brands in a head-to-head comparison. Verso now invites designers, brand managers marketers and printers to take the test. www.versoco.com

AMERICAN PACKAGE DESIGN AWARDS PACKAGING, POP + THE INSTORE EXPERIENCE SPONSORED BY NEENAH Makers, sellers and marketers are challenged as never before to convey the message, promote the brand, close the deal. Package design and related disciplines are increasingly the difference makers in advancing the brand and influencing the purchasing decision. The outstanding work showcased here — 200 or so elite design firms, design departments, and production companies are represented — is testimony to this phenomenon. The annual GDUSA competition celebrates well-designed graphics, of course, but more importantly the power of design to forge an emotional link with the buyer at the moment of truth.

THE BEAUTY OF HIGH TOUCH LUXURY PACKAGING A MESSAG E FR O M N EENAH PACKAGING SPONSOR OF THE AMERICAN PACKAGE DESIGN AWARDS

Luxury packaging: You know it when you see it, but how do you describe it? Because the very nature of “luxury” is personal and differs from one person to the next, it’s impossible to reach a universal definition. So, is it possible to define luxury packaging? Not in a few words. Yet in our 140 year history of making premium papers and labels, collaborating with some of the world’s finest packaging designers and luxury brands, we at Neenah have come to appreciate four key characteristics that, in our minds, help define a luxury package. First, luxury packaging affords a unique, unparalleled unveiling process, that special unboxing “moment” that heightens suspense for the recipient. By the power of thoughtful design, the user is guided, by eye or by touch — often by both — through a magical process of discovery. The best are intuitive: no one has to stop and question the package; rather, they embrace each subtle moment. Next, like the item it is designed to protect and showcase, a luxury package offers an extraordinarily high level of artistry. No detail goes unnoticed by the designer. The package exhibits flawless craftsmanship; its very construction and fabrication portend the quality of the item inside. The quality of the packaging materials almost always speak to the brand’s exclusivity. And an aha: the luxury package often feels bespoke, even if the product and the package is not. The French call this je ne sais quoi. Third, luxury packaging often imparts a layered sensory experience, starting with what is seen. The influence of color on people’s emotions cannot be underestimated; studies show the majority

WHY DESIGNERS CHOOSE PRINT, REASON #11 BY GERRY BONETTO

As the President & and CEO of Thoro Packaging, Jan Steiner has worked with a lot of designers. She understands that designers want to use their creativity to help their customers sell their products … and that for many products, packaging is an obvious way to do that. “With the new embellishments, die cuts, coatings and more,” states Jan, “there is a huge realm of possibility possibilities

In fact, the packaging was so successful that it actually

500px Prime TOP-NOTCH PHOTOGRAPHY FOR TOP-NOTCH CREATIVES The 500px Story

The elevator pitch goes something like this: “500px is the premier photo community for discovering, sharing, buying, and selling inspiring photography, powered by a world-class community of photographers from around the globe.” And that actually sums it up pretty well. Created by co-founders Evgeny Tchebotarev and Oleg Gutsol, 500px was born because there wasn’t a service out there that combined the high-quality photography and vibrant community that the co-founders were hungry for … so they made their own. Since its Web 2.0 release in 2009, the service has grown to include over 5 million photographers and 50 million photos. It’s safe to say Tchebotarev and Gustol’s creation took on a life of its own.

Creating 500px Prime As the community grew beyond the founders’ wildest expectations, so did the vision behind the company. In 2013, the team at 500px began to dream a new dream: they envisioned a licensing marketplace exclusively for 500px users, where this world-class community of photographers could license their top-notch imagery to discerning buyers around the world, and get paid fairly for it. The idea spread through 500px HQ like wildfire, and by March of 2014, 500px Prime was ready to unveil to the world.

It was unlike any other licensing marketplace out there; there’s nothing “stock” about it. Where major agencies might offer photographers a 20 or 30 percent cut, Prime listened to the community’s feedback and offered 70 percent instead. Where other agencies are chock full of cheesy stock imagery, Prime was overflowing with real life photos taken by talented photographers from the world-class 500px community. They had created something awesome. Now it was time to water it, point it towards the sun, and watch it grow.

The scope is bigger and the players more impressive, but the vision is the same as it was on day one: this is a premium marketplace. Top-notch photography for top-notch creatives that refuse to “make it work” with crappy stock photos or free libraries. Prime deals in unique, beautiful, and authentic imagery that’s backed up by statistics provided by the 500px community. Buyers no longer have to guess if a photograph will be popular with their target market, a community of over 5 million discerning users has already weighed in. And because you’re dealing with a small, dedicated team instead of a massive, faceless company, the folks at Prime are always available to help you find the

of your personal branding. So establish a strong online persona

your personal branding:

and tend it carefully.
