prospect of living more comfortably. Conventional wisdom might tell you that young adults should avoid using credit cards altogether. But if used correctly, a credit card can help teach financial lessons, while helping them establish a good credit history. New credit card laws have also made it a must for parents to teach these lessons to their children since those under the age of 21 must show their ability to repay their debt or will be required to have a coapplicant or co-signer on the account. Whether you are a parent who is helping your children manage their first account or a responsible young adult who is considering getting a credit card, here are a few things to consider before you get going: * Look for a card designed for someone new to credit that offers tools to learn about money management. While parents should teach their children about how a credit card works, card providers like Wells Fargo offer online credit card education materials that can be reviewed at any time. Wells Fargo also sponsors money management lessons at See LESSONS on PG. 4

Real world finances

Graduation means no more classes and no more books, but you may find those items being replaced by bills and loan statements. In college, students learn the things that will help them prosper in their careers, but many also leave without a clear understanding of what it means to be finan-

cially responsible. Whether you're entering the real world or you are the parent of a child who is on the verge of graduation, here are a few things new grads need to understand about their finances after leaving college: * Student loans. These days, it's rare for students to graduate from college without student loan debt. What's more common are students who don't entirely know what they

LESSONS

handsonbanking.org that are taught in classrooms and community centers across the United States. * For students, look for a college credit card that offers zero liability for fraudulent purchases and text alerts to help manage and protect your account. * Young adults need to understand that credit cards are loans that need to be paid back. A great introductory lesson for them as they learn to manage their card is to use it to buy books or another necessary purchase. Even if mom and dad are paying for the items purchased, parents can

owe, how many loans they've taken out and the best way to go about paying off their loans. If you have government loans, examining consolidation options may allow you to lock in at a specific rate, and make payments to fewer places. If you, like many graduates, have private loans to supplement your government loans, review your repayment options with your provider.

use this as an example of how to build credit by using a credit card for a planned purchase that you can afford then paying the bill off by the due date to avoid being charged interest. * Parents may wish to schedule monthly or quarterly check-ins with their young adult to discuss how the card is being used. Parents who worry that this will feel like prying too much into how their children are spending their money should focus only on whether payments are being made on time and whether the balance is kept in check, not on what is being

It's always a good idea to check with your loan provider to see if you can set up an automatic repayment option from your account, since many providers, such as U.S. Bank, will give you a lower interest rate if you enroll in this option. If you haven't secured steady employment after college, you might want to check with your provider about your See FINANCE on PG. 5

purchased. Once your children demonstrate responsible use, check-ins can become less frequent, eventually disappearing altogether with good credit behavior. credit history is one more step in the road to independence. Lenders, landlords and employers use credit reports, so a solid credit history will help when young adults need a loan to purchase a car, rent an apartment or even find a job. Learning how to manage credit wisely today will pay off tomorrow and well into the future.

Ross Gilchriest – Valedictorian SILSBEE HIGH SCHOOL

Ready for the real race By Daniel Elizondo editor@silsbeebee.com Ross Gilchriest thrives on competition, but he will tell you in a heartbeat that he thrives on that within himself. While bettering his schoolwork each grade level, he has accomplished so many levels of prestige that have left the door wide open for this young man to pursue. And though some of the most prestigious Ivy League schools that came calling, the 2013 valedictorian of Silsbee High School decided to pursue his lifelong dream – the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. “Since middle school, I have researched a lot of schools,” Gilchriest said. “I found that the Naval Academy develops you as a whole person. It’s not just strictly academic. Instruction involves more leadership, physical instruction, mental toughness, and your moral character.” Gilchriest had an open door to attend Harvard University, but says he felt “at home” with the Naval Academy, each time he visited the campus. “I felt I was going to enjoy the challenge of the Naval Academy more than the prestige of Harvard,” he said. “My entire family has taught me to be supportive and seek the best in yourself. They also taught me to always want more and to look for ways to better your self every day, and always look for excellence. And to keep in mind, to treat others with respect”

Madeline Bebee Madison Bonnette Mariah Franco Lottie Griffin Anshawnique Morrisey Anessa Royce Danielle Vaden

While academics have played an important role in his life, Ross relishes in his high school years remembering Friday night football. He lettered two years for the Silsbee Tigers as a center and he was named to the Academic class 3AAll-State team. Academically, he was a part of the UIL math team that reached state three times in the four years he competed. He was also Focus Magazine editor, a member of the student council, and a member of the Key Club. Like any other teen, Ross is high on athletics and working out, with a little ultimate frisbee on the side. But what most people don’t know about him is his love for playing piano. Ross returned from the Texas State Solo and Ensemble competition where he received a rating of 2. “It’s soothing,” Ross said. “It gives you a way to release emotion – an outlet. But I also like to make Android apps. That’s another outlet for me to release the creative side.” But he claims, it is about building the apps and learning the code – it isn’t about sitting in your room playing “Angry Birds” all day. Ross credits all the teachers he has had through school as inspirations for his education. “Every teacher I have ever had has been a great teacher,” he said. “They deserve all the credit for my education and what a wonderful job that they have done, at least in my opinion.” Ross is looking forward to

loan's repayment grace period. For example, U.S. Bank student loans allow borrowers six months before they must begin repayment. To learn more about student loan repayment or to find information about private student loans if you are planning to continue your education, visit www.usbank.com/studentloans. * Insurance. Another thing that tends to sneak up on recent college grads is the fact that they are now in charge of paying their own insurance most specifically car and health insurance. Most insurance companies allow students to be covered under their parents' policies, but once graduation passes, it will likely be time to find your own coverage. Ask your parents when your coverage on each of these items expires and plan accordingly. Also

plan for rental or homeowner insurance expenses - especially if you don't plan to live at home with your parents. Check first with your new or potential employers, as that's the most common place to receive health insurance. If you are unemployed or aren't covered by an employer's plan, visit www.healthcare.gov to check out different options in your state. You may wish to check with your parents' auto insurance provider to see what types of policies they can offer you. At the same time, it's never a bad idea to shop around to find the best coverage at the lowest rates. * Plan for the future. Earning a steady income can be a welcome change if you were barely scraping by in college, but it can also lead you to overspend. It's always a good

idea to keep your credit card use in check and if you are carrying over any credit card debt from college, it should be the first thing you pay off since credit cards usually carry the highest interest rates. Making full use of your employer's 401(k) program and starting an individual retirement account (IRA) are also great investments to make early in your career. Investing with these types of tools when you're 22 or 23 instead of waiting a few years to begin investing can make all the difference in the world when it comes time for you to retire. With your diploma in hand, you're ready to move on to the next chapter in your life. Start that period off right by making sure you have your finances in order so you can enjoy the income you'll earn at your new job.

Focusing on more than “me”

By Daniel Elizondo editor@silsbeebee.com Ashley Waters’ stellar academic career at Silsbee ISD has opened many windows for the 2013 Salutatorian. Following in the footsteps of her older sister, Waters will be attending Baylor University in Waco after being accepted as a University Scholar. The University Scholars Program generally accepts 50 students per incoming class – less than two percent of the University's entering students. Ashley was involved in a lot of activities while maintaining her studies at Silsbee High School, and one that became intriguing for her was theater. “Stacey Webb has been a big inspiration for me because of theater,” Ashley said. “I had never done anything like that before. I did my first production of Grease as a sophomore and just fell in love with it.” Ashley was also involved in Habitat for Humanity where she president of the campus chapter. “We scheduled build sites and I would help do framework,” Ashley said. “We also put siding up. It was a lot of fun.” Going the extra mile for others has made Ashley a well rounded student.

With the success of graduation, comes more challenges and opportunities in life. Face them both with the same zeal and determination, as you have always done. Congratulations on your Graduation and best wishes for your future life.

A Special Wish To

Ashley drew a love for athletics and excelled in volleyball, something that she has been thinking about continuing. While at Baylor, she is exploring some options to possibly join practice team or intramural athletics to help ease that desire while she studies. After finishing her four years of college, Ashley will continue her education into med school, but wants to stay neutral on her choice of field until she comes along further. “You just have to be careful and not choose something right away,” she said. “I’ve been told that if you do that, then you may not like it and have to re-adjust your schooling. Right now I’m leaning towards becoming an obstetrician, which leads me to working at Texas Women’s Hospital in Houston.” Ashley is even considering military options that would garner further education. “My family was always the push in my life,” Ashley said. “They did well in school and I always knew they expected the best from me. After a while, I didn’t need that push from them because it became my standard.” As humble as Ashley is, she hasn’t forgotten her class-

Gilder is making the best of a tragic year and simply ready to walk the stage to receive his diploma when he graduates on June 7 at Silsbee High School. “It’s been a good and bad thing this year, but we are making it,” Gilder said. “I’m just happy to be here because I finally made it.” Things went awry for Gilder’s family late in March

when he learned that his grandmother was in need of major surgery, for which she is recovering at this point. But that wasn’t all the family endured. About a week later after his grandmother’s surgery, Gilder’s father lost his home to a devastating fire. Then in April, he found out that his mother had lost her job. As much as the second semester brought a tailspin, Gilder focused on his school to the best of his ability, and with the support of his high school family, he endured the test and enters a new stage in life. “My main objective right now is to take care of my mother,” Gilder said. “Choosing Houston for school was one of the reasons to be closer to my mom.” Gilder plans on attending the University of Houston and major in engineering, while maintaining his close ties to family. Along with maintaining studies, Gilder was a member of FCCLA, he participated in the STAR program where he made it to state competition, and most notably, he was basketball manager since the 8th grade.

Preparing for a new mission

In Southeast Texas there is a long history of children growing up in large families associated with membership in the Latter Day Saints Church. While these families are similar in many ways to other families in the area they have differences too and some of these differences tend to not only set them apart but they can change the pattern of life for the people involved. Madeline Bebee grew up in one of those families. Two brothers, three younger sisters. A fairly large group, they learn to share in responsibilites and activities of the family. They learn the discipline of preparing for seminary prior to the school day. Madeline is a graduate of the LDS seminary where children start as freshman attending class at the LDS church every morning. The day starts early – 5:30 a.m. Then when students are active like Madeline the day proceeds from seminary to classroom work to sports or activities such as drama or choir. The days grow long. Madeline says people who attend the seminary for four years and complete the work and the many projects associated with the school are able to graduate. Others receive a certificate of attendance. Madeline took the time and had the talent to participate in a lot of activities. She has been in choir for four years and was a TMEA all region performer each year. She qualBest All Around: D. J. ified for state auditions two years and was a UIL solo and ensemble qualifier for four years. She got the opportunity to share her alto voice at school, at church and even in the school dramas. She participated in the school musicals for four years. Each year she had a major role. She was Dorothy in "Wizard of Oz" as a freshman, She was Marty in "Grease" as a sophomore. She was Tiffany Houston in "Back to the 80's" her junior year and this year she was Patty in "BeeHive". The plays gave her a chance to sing and act. During the spring she was a three time member of the school's one act play. Her sophomore year she was called upon to play a male role as Dave in "The Lottery." Her senior year she was Addae Mae in "The Cover of Life." Even at home, music was a major part of her life. She teamed with her older brother Brad and younger brother Cullen to form a band known as “Black Sheep Radio”. She played guitar and bass guitar. They performed at the Log On Cafe and at the Barking Dog which is now closed. The band is also in hibernation because Brad is on an LDS mission. He was not only the leader of the band but he also wrote the music. Madeline now has plans for college. She will attend school at Lamar for a semester and then will turn 19 and hopes to go on her own mission. The

mission will last 1-1/2 years and then she can return to college where she hopes to study something in the medical field such as nursing or pharmacy work. She now is looking forward to college and looking forward to her mission which will give her an opportunity to "get out on her on." Her long term goal is not to be a great musician, but to accomplish something outstand-

ing in the medical field. Her long term plan is simply to carry on the traditions and to be a great mom, one who puts family before friends, and one who emphasis the values of the family in the LDS setting. She is the daughter of Brian and Jill Bebee. In addition to her brothers in the band her other siblings are Scout, 12, Annie 8 and Aliza 5.

By Daniel Elizondo editor@silsbeebee.com Despite having to attend school with her entire family within the same campus of Silsbee High School, Mariah Franco accepted the challenge and made her high school career a success while making it worthwhile at the same time. “Up until last year, my whole family followed me to school,” Franco said. “My brother was here, my mom is the nurse here and of course my dad is the principal. Whatever you are involved in, people expect more because they know your parents. So whatever you do, not only reflects on yourself, but also on your parents. It’s a little challenging, but it’s fun.” Mariah’s father is Principal Eldon Franco, and her mother is the school nurse, Carrie Franco. Mariah has relished her senior career at Silsbee and with all the hardwork, came a 5th ranking in her senior class that will graduate on Friday. She credits her relationships with teachers, something she will miss the most after graduation. “It’s different at big schools because students don’t usually get the one-on-one help,” she

said. “Here, it is close knit where I was able to go to one teachers class for help at any time.” But one thing Mariah has grown close to is her family, particularly the three most influential women in her life – her mother, grandmother and her aunt. Always looking up to her mom, she has wanted to be like her because of her Christian spirit and well-rounded life skills that taught her right from wrong. Mariah also loves her grandmother, who she says is always there for her when she is in need. She also says she loves her aunt as much. “My mom sometimes calls me Sarah, my aunt’s name,” Mariah added. “We are so much alike. I see a lot of her in myself.” Having been in Silsbee seven years, it is the longest time she has attended a given school and loves that she is finishing here. Most of the kids in school are lifelong residents and have known each other since grade school, but Mariah adds that she felt just as accepted as anyone and will miss Silsbee High School.

From Mexico to Silsbee – no problem

By Daniel Elizondo editor@silsbeebee.com Cristoval Aboytes Gallegos never imagined he would begin his high school career in the United States. When his family decided on a better life in America, their journey led them to the small town of Silsbee four years ago. “I couldn’t speak any English when I got here,” Cristoval said. “My parents decided to come over here because it was hard over there. And when they got here, they liked it.” The Gallegos family traveled over 1,000 miles from Guanajuato, Mexico, a town in between Guaralajara and Mexico City. It took no time for Cristoval to become accustomed to Southeast Texas life, having been embraced by his peers at Silsbee High School since day one. His English speaking skills became better as time passed, thanks to friends that helped him learn the language. “I have enjoyed everything about Silsbee,” he said. “The school, the people. It is a nice place to live.” Cristoval credits a teacher in

middle school, Ms. Cooper, for helping him adjust when he first arrived in Silsbee. He also was inspired by Kathryn Iles, Kim Albers, Sheila Carrell, and Sharon Waters for their patience and understanding to help him grow in the states. Cristoval was a member of the SHS soccer team and also competed in cross country his senior year. “I’m excited about graduation,” Cristoval said. “Everybody is talking about graduating and how they are ready, but I’m not ready. I have mixed emotions.” Because of his love for math, Cristoval will be attending Lamar University and plans on majoring in electrical engineering with a minor in computer science. “I was surprised because when I first got here, I was not that good at math,” Cristoval added. “After being here, my grades improved a lot.” Cristoval has a younger sister in middle school and says she grew accustomed easier than he did to speaking English and says she speaks very well. Though Cristoval misses his former home in Mexico, he has found a new home that he

Agriculture a prosperous journey

Kayla Scott 2013 Silsbee High School

You’re on your way now, and the future looks very bright indeed! Stay on the right track, and stay focused on your goals to achieve great things.

By Daniel Elizondo editor@silsbeebee.com Being a well-rounded ag student gave Kayla Scott a lot to carry over into her next phase in life. Having a busy life showing animals in livestock shows across the area has given her a great deal of learning responsibility. “I’m excited about graduating,” Kayla said. “I’ve been ready to move on to a new phase of life.” Kayla will be attending Lamar Instititute of Technology and pursuing a degree in radiology technology. She wants to eventually move into ultrasound. Her high school years have been a non-stop, busy life with her ag career, having been a band up until her sophomore year, enduring the tuba while marching, an instrument as big as her. She also organized a program for the Boys and Girls Club, active in her church and church choir and was the first

member of 4H and Silsbee FFA. She has showed a steer and two heifers at the Houston Livestock Show and won’t deny that she will miss those days. “I’ll miss that a lot since I have been involved with it for so many years,” Kayla said. “But I can always help and follow my little sister now that she is getting into it.” Kayla definitely loves the small town life and plans on remaining in the area in hopes of gaining some land to raise animals once again. Kim Albers, Sheila Carrell, and Mona Bodle have inspired Kayla through her high school career. Kayla is the daughter of Kevin and Christi Scott.

Mariah credits teachers Sheila Carrell, Stacy Webb, Alyson Donalson, and Sharon Waters for her success in school. She will be attending Houston Baptist University where she plans on majoring in mass communications/journalism.

The Care You Deserve

1162 Hwy 327 E

By Daniel Elizondo editor@silsbeebee.com It hasn’t been an easy time for Zach Shaw, but his look on life has taken a new path, which gives him the strength to move on with a smile on his face. “I’ve always heard that the friends you have in high school, you’ll never find anywhere else,” he said. “You grow up with these people all of your life.” It’s a bittersweet time for Zach, who is happy to be walking the stage, receiving his diploma on Friday. But his path hasn’t been as easy as most kids his age. While tennis became his outlet, Zach found God, and became a different person after his home life began to take a toll on him. Living in a broken home after his parents divorced, Zach’s relationship with his mother turned from a close mother-son relationship, to him being asked to leave the home his senior year. “It wasn’t easy,” Zach said. “I stayed with someone from my church and they gave me good advice. They told me to always leave the door open for my mom and to always let her know that I was still there. I’m hoping that it will all change, because I still love her.” Zach moved to Silsbee near the end of his seventh grade year but later moved to Dallas his freshman year. He then returned to Silsbee at the end of his junior year.

www.frazierpt.com

His life has been rough for many years, having to endure a past history with his father that Zach has accused of abuse. Zach says he is the youngest of 10 and began to suffer abuse at the age of 14. His relationship with his mother grew from there when she wanted to protect him. Things went sour later, but Zach found a church family, God, and his new girlfriend. “It completely changed my world,” Zach said. “It was meant to be.” While Zach found his spiritual side, he fell in love with tennis, which became an outlet for him. In fact, he and Adam Cruz became doubles partners for Silsbee High School and reached the regional tournament, missing state by a hair. Zach plans on attending Lamar University and major in psychology, a subject he grew interested in with all the turmoil in his life. “I really would like to get into criminal psychology, to find out what made these people do the things they did,” Zach said. “I feel like I have a gift. I can read a lot of people by just looking at them and their actions.” Zach credits Mona Bodle as an inspiration in high school, having helped him through his trying time. “I didn’t have a lot of money and when it came to senior pictures, I was unable to afford any,” he said. “In the end, I ended up with some pic-

tures and later find out Ms. Bodle had got them for me.” He also credits his tennis coach Mr. Husbands, who taught him the game when he became a freshman. “I had never played or watched tennis ever in my life,” Zach said. “When I started school, the counselor asked me what sport I wanted to play, I said soccer. She told

Matt Vickery

me it was full, so I just chose tennis. I fell in love with it from then on.” Zach found a family for now, but hopes his mom will come calling soon. While he keeps busy with his newfound girlfriend and church family, his life seems to be smiles – as he enters a new phase in life.

New chapter in life

Congratulations! Class You Of Did It! 2013 May your hard work and dedication continue to pay off as you strive to reach the next goal. Good luck, graduates!

PARCO PRINTING 123 N 5th St • Silsbee www.parcoprinting.com

By Daniel Elizondo editor@silsbeebee.com Matt Vickery feels like he did his due after 12 years of school in Silsbee. After graduation and a brief reprieve from all the years of school work, Matt will begin what he calls a new chapter in life on September 23. “I’m ready to get out of here,” Matt said. Rightfully so, since he found his niche as a Navy recruit scheduled for basic training on Sept. 23 in Florida. “I’m definitely ready for a new start to a new chapter,” Matt said. “I’m ready to travel and see the world for free.” Matt was inspired to join the service when a friend had enlisted. He enlisted at the end of his junior year, set to make his path. But a lot of contribution to the idea came from his father,

It’s a whole new world for you, graduate. Your future is of infinite possibility, and you are headed in the right direction. We wish you all the best as you set out to realize your hopes and dreams. Good Luck Graduates!

Joe Vickery, who was an electronics technician in the U.S. Navy. Matt’s plans are more than just traveling the world, he aspires to become an air rescue swimmer, and then eventually becoming a Navy SEAL. His training began early on for the Navy, having been motivated by football. He credits coaches at Beaumont Westbrook and in Silsbee for his football skills and training. Matt attended Westbrook his freshman year and returned to Silsbee his sophomore year before finishing. His outlook on joining the Navy during a heated time in our world does not hinder his decision by any means. “The way I look at it, I won’t be able to see action for at least two years,” Matt said. “And even if I complete my SEAL training, it will be up to four, so hopefully, things will have died down by then.”

Singing a new tune

By Daniel Elizondo editor@silsbeebee.com From powerlifting champion to choir Annie Morrisey has done just about everything at Silsbee High School. Annie has been waiting for this day and she is ready to enroll at Lamar University where she will be majoring in social work with hopes of entering the criminal justice field. Her career in high school was highlighted by a stellar powerlifting career that saw her qualify for state three years and win in class 3A her senior year. “I cried when I won,” Annie said. “I think I could have picked up a 1,000 pounds, I was so happy.” It isn’t so unusual for a girl to be a powerlifting champ, and with Annie’s desire, her will to capture that championship was right on its way. She credits Frankye Riley for her success and being there for her in all aspects of school. “Ms. Riley and her husband are my no. 1 fans,” Annie said. “She doesn’t have to wake up at 5 a.m. for practice, but she does.”

Annie also credits Coach Hiawatha Hickman as an inspiration for her success. “Coach Hickman has been through a lot,” she continued. “If he can do the things he does with what happened, then I could get up early and be at practice on time.” A part of Annie’s toughness through school came because she is the youngest of three, having to endure two older brothers. But her outlet outside of powerlifting has been choir. Annie was blessed with a beautiful voice that has given her the opportunity to shine in school choir and a gospel choir in church. In fact, many at Silsbee sporting events may have heard Annie sing the National Anthem, whether at football, basketball or baseball. The one thing for Annie is that graduation is a bittersweet time of year. “I’m going to miss my mom,” she said. “It’s just her and I at home, so everything that’s been going on, she just starts crying.” Annie is the daughter of Debra Howard and William Morrisey Jr.

The Kingdom, The Music Makers and The Dream of Gerontius. Proceeding his almost unparalleled fame from these works, Elgar was asked to come to the United States and conduct his works. Elgar was not convinced to come to America until years later after speaking to "his great American friend, Samuel Sanford, Professor of Applied Music at Yale University." Elgar was promised a resplendent reception in his honor once he came to the states. Once he was at Yale, Elgar would conduct his many pieces along with a chorus in the graduation ceremony. It was not until the guests were leaving the ceremony did they hear Elgar's piece whose title derived from an act of Shakespeare's "Othello." The piece was called, Pomp and Circumstance. As the last note rung through the halls, the everlasting impression was made upon the audience as they carried the piece from colleges like Princeton, Chicago, Rut-

History of Pomp and Circumstance

Summary: The musical piece "Pomp and Circumstance" heard by graduating seniors every year was created by composer Edward Elgar, who was also famous for composing "Enigma Variations," "Overture: In The South," and "The Kingdom," among others. Derived from one of the acts in William Shakespeare's "Othello," Elgar first presented "Pomp and Circumstance" at Yale's graduation ceremony, and the piece made a lasting impression. As the end of June steadily approaches, the roaring excitement caused by the thought of graduation is found in all seniors. Each day they get closer to graduation and the sounds of Pomp and Circumstance become louder and louder. This well known piece was created by Edward Elgar. Edward Elgar was a composer famous for many other pieces along with Pomp and Circumstance, these famous works include Enigma Variations, Overture: In The South,

2013 Silsbee Grad

gers, and Vassar. Today, Pomp and Circumstance can be heard at graduation ceremonies of almost all schools nationwide. But why was it that this specific piece had such an impact on audiences that it is still so alive in our society today" It is because Pomp and Circumstance brought something that few other pieces could bring. Elgar caused an aura of excellence, emotion, and passion to be projected to all of his audiences. Allowing views to connect with everything they have ever felt within their lives. Great thought and pure genius are underlying each seemingly simple measure of this piece. In 1933, Edward Elgar discovered that he had cancer and removed large parts of tumors through a series of surgeries. A year and half later, Elgar passed away but his legacy that lies within Pomp and Circumstance as well as the other pieces he composed will live on forever.

“There is a good reason they call these ceremonies 'commencement exercises'. Graduation is not the end, it's the beginning.”

“Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.”

Evadale graduates with their own style

By Scott Loar The Evadale High School Class of 2013 has their own way of doing things and it was in evidence during their commencement exercise held last Friday, May 31 in the Evadale Rebel Gym. The usual prevent jitters were in evidence in the hallway as the graduates prepared to file on the floor for all those gathered to see. On the top of several caps were messages and future schools that the students will be attending. Then finally the administration and school board walked in followed by the group of people representing groups that were awarding scholarships and then the high school faculty entered. It was finally time for the graduates to take center stage. Several students showed their emotions as they high fived, chest bumped or hugged as they entered from the two doors and met as they headed for their seats. Once in place the ceremony began, but not before a large party popper materialized and was set off among the 32 candidates for graduation. First to speak were the cosalutatorians, Brittnee Rawls followed by Katy Gipson. Then the valedictorian, Kennedy Jackson gave her speech. All three spoke of the good times and great memories that they will take with them from their years together. Many in the class have been together since they were the very first pre kindergarten class in the school’s history, which Gipson pointed out. Each gave credit to their parents for the encouragement and guidance that they gave them growing up. But again in their very own style the graduates produced a couple of beach balls appeared among the graduates and they began being batted about in the joy of the moment. Next up was the presentation of scholarships as many thousands of dollars were

Others were given and 24 of the 32 graduates received at least one scholarship. The presentation of the honor blankets was next on the agenda as Rawls, Gipson and Jackson were all presented the traditional honor given to the highest ranking students. The Mr. Blue and Miss Gold awards were next as Wes Williams and Jackson were chosen by their classmates for the honor that represents the most school spirited. Finally it was time to hand out the diplomas. Principal, Rusty Minyard certified that the members of the class had met the requirements and presented them to Superintendent, Gary Fairchild and the School Board. One by one each candidate had their name read and they received their diploma. Once he received his, Hunter Jackson peeled off his gown to reveal a pink tuxedo, then after the ceremony closed Skylar Smith removed his gown and began leading the class in the Harlem Shuffle. The group danced in the middle of the chairs they had just been sitting in and they began to leave the floor. Kendall Tousha and Chrystal Whitehead both cheerleaders did back flips as they left, Smith went out on Hunter Jackson’s shoulders, Katy Gipson and Alayna Langston did one of their handshakes from softball and the Class of 2013 left the ceremony the only way they knew how, their way in their style.

Adam Antenor Cruz SILSBEE HIGH SCHOOL JOHN PHILIP SOUSA AWARD

Adam Antenor Cruz has big plans for himself in the world of music. He has a scholarship to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston. The 2013 John Philip Sousa award winner at Silsbee High School received a brochure on the school which is one of the top music schools in the US and decided to apply for the scholarship. Before the process was complete he had been awarded a $14,000 scholarship for four years to a school that simply can be described as "the best". The school is known as the place to develop professional musicians and that is what Adam wants to be in the future. He has played the saxophone in the school band for the past seven years. Four years ago he took up piano and has developed skills there. His main passion has been his saxophone where he was an all region performer for two years. He also has been in the ATSB Jazz Band for the sax for the past two years and was named the first chair performer each of them. Each of his four years in high school he qualified for the state solo and ensemble competition. He was the saxophone section leader of the SHS band for the past two years. Cruz is a multi-active person and he actually lists a drama event as the highlight of his high school days. That event did involve his saxophone. This year, the school put on the 60's musical "Bee Hive". They had a live band in the musical for the first time and Cruz played the tenor sax. He also has been involved in Key Club and played tennis where he was a double player and was a two year regional qualifier. Cruz has the respect of his classmates and was the class representative his junior and senior year. He is the son of Alan and Vilma Antenor-Cruz. He has

Tanner Malone – Valedictorian KOUNTZE HIGH SCHOOL

Top student Baylor bound

By Andrea Whitney reporter@silsbeebee.com

Tanner Malone moved from Beaumont to Kountze with his family after his home was destroyed after Hurricane Rita. The KHS Valedictorian was nervous about moving to a small town and smaller school but found the fit perfect for him. Malone excelled in sports as well as academically. During his four year high school career, Malone participated in baseball, football, cross country, National Honor Society, Student Council, and Robotics. Malone stated he grew to love KHS because of it's smaller size, which allowed him to participate in every extra-curricular activity that interested him. Excelling in math classes over the past four years, Malone chose to pursue a degree in engineering and will be attending Baylor University in the fall. He received a Merritt Scholarship from Baylor and will relocate to live on campus this fall. Malone, the son of Perry

and Tresha Malone, is looking forward to new experiences and a new way of life but will miss the small town way of life that has become a comfort to him over the past four years.

"I am really going to miss hanging out with my friends and seeing them everyday. And of course, I'm going to miss hanging out with them at the creek and swimming."

Jesse James – Salutatorian

Graceful grad stays humble By Andrea Whitney reporter@silsbeebee.com

Although he possesses a name that is not easily forgotten, it is the quiet gracefulness that most will remember upon meeting the grad. James, the son of Lloyd and Rena James of Kountze, was born and raised in Kountze and would not have it any other way. An avid outdoors-men, James enjoys hunting and fishing and has been extremely successful in his high school baseball career, something he calls one of his proudest accomplishments. James has chosen to remain close to home and will be attending Lamar University this fall, pursuing an engineering degree. He received a scholarship from the American Legion and although he may be a little apprehensive about it, he is looking forward to starting this next chapter. "I am a homebody so having to meet and interact with all these new people at college is going to be interesting. It's going to be fun though." James excelled in football, baseball, and power-lifting while at KHS and was also an active member of the National Honor Society. James' proudest achievement thus far was the baseball team's first playoff victory this year against Boling. "I really had struggled in the beginning of the season and had to overcome a lot to hold my position against other players. I am really proud of that."

James also traveled to Austin this year to participate in the American Legion's Texas Boys State Government Camp and was nominated in both 2012 and 2013 for United States Academics in math. He credits his teachers for his success over the past four years. "My teachers are great. The teachers here really get to

Devin Coe remembers the first time he knew that numbers were going to play a large part in his future. "I was in the fifth grade and I remember thinking, Whoa! I am really good at math!" Coe took that love of numbers and ran with it all the way to the finish line of high school, earning himself a spot at Lamar Institue of Technology to pursue an accounting degree. The KHS grad will attend LIT for two years and then move on to Lamar University to achieve a degree in accounting. Coe has decided to remain in the Kountze area because of the people and country atomosphere. "I just like the people here and I know everyone. I like the country setting and LIT is close enough that I can com-

mute." When asked about his favorite high school memory, Coe reflected on the time he spent with his older brother who was a senior when Coe was a freshman, just beginning his high school career. "We got to work on a camaro together in Mr. Trick's shop. That was awesome." Coe stated that the main thing he will miss once he embarks on his path to college will be the teachers, one in particular. "I am really going to miss Mr. Trick. I have had him all four years in high school and we really got close. He's a great teacher." Coe plans to work alongside his father in the family mechanical shop during the summer , before heading to LIT in the fall. Coe is the son of Allan Coe of Kountze and Tina Gillespie of Beaumont.

Engineering a dream

Kountze native and KHS grad Caleb Darby has been a busy young man the past four years and his future seems to offer no lack in activity and success. Darby, the son of Bryan and Carrie Darby of Kountze, will be attending Blynn Junior College this fall and will remain there for his first year before transferring to Texas A&M University to follow his dream of becoming a mechanical engineer. Darby earned the Hazelwood Scholarship and is currently awaiting scholarships from the KHS Building and Trades Program and the First Robotics Scholarship. Darby has been an active member of both programs and has also excelled in baseball, football, power-lifting and golf. He also has become a proven leader after serving in the KHS Student Council. Darby's summer plans include working a summer job until his move in July to Brenham to begin his life at Blynn. Darby said that growing up in Kountze has made this a

Turmes going north

Kountze grad Brittany Turmes has traveled more than her share during her 18 years. Born in Arkansas, she has lived in Kountze most of her life but has lived as far away as Alaska. Turmes will be attending the University of North Texas in Denton and is pursuing a degree in either political science or International Studies. Turmes stated that her goal is to work at the United Nations focusing on foreign relations and help develop programs that will encourage cultural individuality while promoting peace. "I'm not exactly sure yet which one I am going to choose but I know it's going to be one of those two." Turmes earned the Excellence Scholarship from the University of North Texas and live on campus to experience the life of a college student. "I am very excited about going off to school but I have no idea what to expect." When asked what she will miss the most about living in Kountze, Turmes quickly answered, "the easy country driving, it's going to be scary driving where I am going." Turmes is the daughter of Victor and Wanda Turmes of Kountze.

BROWN SIGNS

Tyler Brown signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Ranger Junior College in Ranger, Texas.

Brown signs with Ranger Tyler Brown, signed a letter of intent to attend Ranger Junior College in Ranger, Texas and play baseball. Brown, who is a left fielder, has been an all-district player for Kountze for the past three seasons. He is a four year varsity letterman at Kountze High School. Assistant Coach Tracy Franklin reports that he bats about .300. He has good speed and an eye for the ball. One year he led the Lions in walks. In many ways he has a baseball body at 5-10 and 170 pounds. Brown himself, describes the strength of his game as being his speed which helps him on the base paths and helps him be a strong field. This year he will play in the TASO tournament for the third time.

Brown says the highlight of his time in baseball came his sophomore year when the Lions beat Buna and he got the game winning hit. He says he elected to attend Ranger because he liked what they were doing and was impressed with their coaches, Coach Blakely and Coach Lambert. Even thou he played a number of other sports he says baseball was the one he loved and he never had a feeling like it for the other sports. He is the son of Gene and Ashley Brown. He is also a three year letterman in football. He was named this year as an all district special teams player. He played linebacker and spent time at running back this year. Earlier in his career he has played strong safety and run-

ning back. He has lettered two years in track. During those years he has done both the triple jump and the high jump. He also has ran legs on the 4x400 meter relay and has run the 100 meter dash. His favorite activities outside the school are hunting and fishing. He is an active member in the CCA. In some ways his senior season was one of his tougher seasons. He pulled a quad muscle during a scrimmage against Silsbee and had to deal with it all year. One of the strong points of his game is his speed and this affected his speed. He says he appreciated the fact that the Kountze coaches kept working with him and helped him find a place to play in college.

Celebrate the grads in your life with financial gifts Do you have a child in your life who will be graduating this spring? Whether it's from kindergarten or college, graduation marks the completion of one chapter in a young person's life and the start of a new adventure. Honor your grad's achievement by helping him or her save for the future with a digital U.S. Savings Bond. "Graduation season is a time of celebration and great pride for families. In preparation for this milestone achievement, we encourage parents to consider opening a TreasuryDirect account for their child within their own primary TreasuryDirect account, so the gift of savings bonds can be given by relatives or friends who want to contribute to a young grad's future," says Jerry Kelly, national director of the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Ready.Save.Grow. campaign. Savings bonds are a great gift choice for a child of any age. They're a low-risk way to save, and offer steady accumulation of interest. Additionally, interest earned from savings bonds is exempt from state and local income taxes, and may also be exempt from federal income taxes when used to pay for qualified higher education expenses. If there's a special child in your life, read on for helpful information about gifting savings bonds.

Opening a TreasuryDirect account Parents - need help setting up a TreasuryDirect account for your child? Rachel Burrows has lived all across Amercia. Born in Kountze, then traveled everywhere from Springfield, OR to Columbia, TN, to Newton, TX, the Kountze grad decided with her family that KHS is where she wanted to spend her senior year. The family relocated back to Kountze and Burrows thrived as a KHS senior. "I loved my old friends. I was so happy to have been able to finish school here with them and with the teachers here." Burrows will be attending East Texas Baptist University in Marshall this fall. She will be majoring in education and hopes to teach third grade. "I remember loving the third grade when I was a kid. They're not too young but they're not too old so it's the perfect grade to teach." Burrows, the daughter of

Randy and Kandy Burrows of Kountze, earned a Student Leadership Scholarship as well as an Academic Scholarship from East Texas Baptist University. She has participated in choir and a student advisiory committee during her four years in high school. Burrows fondly remembers her favorite high school memory taking place in Mrs. Beeler's classroom. "The parties in there were the best", she stated, with a big grin. "All my friends were in there and it was just always such a good time." Although extremely excited to leave for college, Burrows can't help but reflect on her senior year in Kountze and at KHS. "I love all the people here. I love how loving and accepting they are in this town. I am going to miss all of them and especially my family. They all mean so much to me."

Academic dress for graduations started in the 12th and 13th centuries when universities first began forming. Whether a student or a teacher, standard dress for scholars was clerical garb. Most medieval scholars had made certain vows, and had at least taken minor orders with the church so clerical robes were their main form of dress to begin with. In 1321, the University of Columbia mandated that all Doctors, Bachelors, and Licentiates must wear gowns. In the latter half of the 14th century, excess in apparel was forbidden in some colleges and prescribed wearing a long gown. By the time of England's Henry VIII, Oxford and Cambridge began using a standard form of academic dress, which was controlled to the tiniest detail by the university. Not until the late 1800s were colors assigned to signify certain areas of study, but they were only standardized in the United States. European institutions have always had diversity in their academic dress, but American institutions employ a definite system of dress thanks to Gardner Cotrell Leonard from Albany, New York. After designing gowns for his 1887 class at Williams College, he took an interest in the subject and published an article on academic

dress in 1893. Soon after he was asked to work with an Intercollegiate Commission to form a system of academic apparel. The system Gardner Cotrell Leonard helped form was based on gown cut, style and fabric; as well as designated colors to represent fields of study. For example green was the color of medieval herbs, and was assigned to medical studies. Because olive is close to green, was designated for pharmaceutical studies. In 1959, the American Council on Education had a Committee on Academic Costumes and Ceremonies review the costume code and make changes. In 1986, the committee changed the code to clarify the use of dark blue for a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) How to properly wear a graduation cap and gown: Men: It is recommended that men wear dark trousers or khakis, dark socks, shoes, and a neatly-pressed, light-colored dress shirt with dark tie underneath an academic gown. Jeans and shorts, sandals and tennis shoes should be avoided. The cap is worn flat on the head. The gown should fall midway between the knee and ankle. Tassels are usually worn on the right side and shifted to the left when graduates receive their diplomas. Men should remove their caps

Graduation Announcements, Invitations and Parties: Graduation announcements, while not originally viewed as a request for gifts, unfortunately have become associated in recent years with forced gift-giving. Graduation announcements should not be distributed to people other than close friends and family members, unless the notation "No gifts please" has been added. (A rough rule to follow would be this: Send announcements only to those people who already know that you, or your son or daughter is graduating.) The same thing goes for graduation invitations (which differ from the announce-

ments only in that they include a request for attendance at the ceremony as opposed to merely announcing the impending receipt of the diploma or degree). This is particularly true because many degreegranting institutions impose limits on the number of spectators who actually may attend, and issue tickets to the graduate to be given to those select members of the family or friends who actually are expected to show up at the ceremonies. Think carefully about who to invite to the graduation ceremony; after all, what if they all actually show up and you don't have tickets for them? Better to invite only immediate family and closest friends (such as godparents) to the ceremony. That means, of course, that you must have at least one fabulous graduation party to which you can invite all of those people who helped you and your family survive the last 2 - 4 - 8 - 12 or 14 years. Whether it is a traditional graduation party such as an open house or a more "organized party" such as a roast for the graduate or a buffet dinner, plan a party theme that reflects what your graduate's plans for the future.

during the school song and the National Anthem. Women: Women graduates should wear dark slacks, dress, or skirt, and a light-colored dress blouse with dark shoes. High heels are not recommended for reasons of safety and comfort, flats or pumps are suggested. Sandals and tennis shoes should not be worn. The cap is worn flat on the head. The gown should fall midway between the knee and ankle. Tassels are usually worn on the right side and shifted to the left when graduates receive their diplomas. Women are allowed to keep their caps on during the National Anthem.

Following dad’s footsteps

By Andrea Whitney reporter@silsbeebee.com

LHS grad Lucas Johnston says that the thrill, excitement and nervousness of graduation and the impending changes have not made an impact on him...yet. " I guess it just has not hit me yet, I'm not nervous." Johnston really has nothing to be nervous about as he has prepares for his transition into college. A Mirabeau Scholarship award winner, Johnston will be attending Lamar in the fall to study chemical engineering, a career path he says he has felt comfortable with. "My dad is a chemical engineer and I enjoy playing with chemicals and setting things on fire," Johnston jokingly says. Johnston is a self proclaimed "gamer" and is a member of the LHS Society of Gamers as well as an active member of the Raider Band. He also enjoys reading James

Patterson and Rick Riodrin novels. His career with the Raider Band earned him a qualification in 2011 and 2013 to the State Solo and Ensemble Contest, but its not the awards he earned with the band that mean the most to this grad, its the friendships he made with other band members along the way. "We are one big band family. We hang out together in the band hall and we all do most things together. I am going to miss that bond that I shared with them." Johnston, who also earned LHS's title of HIghest Ranking Boy, will spend his summer with family and traveling to Yellowstone before returning home in time to prepare for his move to the Lamar dorms. Johnston is the son of Tom and Mary Johnston and the grandson of Elizabeth Brown of Michigan and Nancy Johnson of North Carolina.

Dream comes true for cheerleader By Andrea Whitney reporter@silsbeebee.com

Addie Grace Richardson is a born and raised Raider. Living in Lumberton her entire life and attending Lumberton High School for the past four years, Richardson has worked hard to bring her dream of becoming a college cheerleader into fruition. That dream was recently made a reality when Richardson made the final cut to become a member of Texas State University's Co-Ed Cheer Team. She had to perfect her tumbling skills, many different stunts, and cheers and chants before being considered for the team. After several rounds of cuts, Richardson found that she was one of the few who exhibited the ability and talent to become a TSU cheerleader. Richardson, the daughter of Randy and Sheli Richardson and the granddaughter of Betty Richardson, will attend the college, located in San Marcos, this fall and will take

part in the full college experience when she moves into the dorms shortly before classes begin in late August. Richardson says that while her excitement is profound, there are definite things about home that she will miss. "I am going to miss all the friends and the people that I grew up with. We literally grew up together and now for the first time, we are going to be split up." One of those cherished memories for Richardson is when the LHS cheer team won third in the nation. "That made me so proud and happy," Richardson stated. Richardson will spend her summer in Lumberton and attending cheer camps before moving to San Marcos in early fall.

“Where something Fresh is Always Cooking”

Chemical engineer driven By Andrea Whitney reporter@silsbeebee.com

Lumberton High School Katherine Valedictorian "Katy" Deaton is ready to get the next phase of her life started and knows that Lamar University is waiting to help her do just that this fall. Deaton is one of seven LHS students who is receiving the coveted Mirabeau Scholarship offered by Lamar University. The scholarship is one of the most prestigious and competitive scholarships that the college offers and covers the total cost of tuition, books and supplies, as well as room and board for the student's entire college career over eight semesters. Deaton accepted the scholarship and is ready to jump into her new life as a college student majoring in chemical engineering. "I took AP Chemistry my junior year and loved it. I have always loved engineering so this seemed like a good choice for me." The graduate enjoyed a busy and successful high school career at LHS, participating in the Raiderettes

Dance Company all four years and excelled as the team's Captain this year. Other activities include French Society, National Honor Society, and the Freshmen Mentoring Program. Though Deaton was hard pressed to find a single favorite memory or experience from her high school career, one that shined the brightest was her Senior Raiderette Revue. "It was our last performance together and all the girls got together and gave me a beautiful pearl and diamond ring," which she proudly wears everyday. "I had no idea they were going to do that and they also bought my baton for me so that I can keep it for life. They mean so much to me and I am going to miss each and every one of them and the relationships we built." Deaton has already began to look past her college graduation from Lamar and onto her career in the chemical engineering field. "I'm not sure which way I am going to go but I know I am going to find my way by utilizing internships and co-op experiences."

Lumberton Chamber of Commerce 826 N. Main 755-0554 Lumberton www.lumbertoncoc.com

Living in Lumberton her entire school career has proved not to be such a bad thing for LHS Salutatorian Kay-Alana Calhoun. The Lamar University bound grad has been at LHS for her entire high school career and has forged relationships with friends that she will hold dear to her heart forever. "I chose Lamar to stay close to my friends and family. Some of my classmates are attending Lamar as well and that was a plus for me," Calhoun stated. Calhoun will also have another incentive to remain close to home. She is one of

several Lumberton seniors to receive the Mirabeau Scholarship from Lamar. The scholarship is reserved for a select few who demonstrate incredible determination, leadership and academic excellence. Calhoun will be majoring in English and would like to work in publishing. "I love any type of editing and I hope that I can one day be an editor of some sort." Calhoun participated in several activities during her high school career such as theatre, National Honor Society, Key Club, Spanish Club, UIL Theatre and UIL Academics to name a few. She remains active in her youth group at Woodcrest United Methodist Church and plans to spend her summer attending mission trips in and around Texas before moving into the dorms at Lamar to begin her new life as a college student. Calhoun is the daughter of Robin and Rosa Calhoun and the grand-daughter of Lavon Rogers and Ronald and Judy Calhoun.

Cheering won’t stop now

Kyndall M’Layn Boykin 2013 Lumberton High School

By Andrea Whitney reporter@silsbeebee.com Cheerleading has been a part of Kyndall Boykin's life for as long as she can remember. The Lumberton grad has been on the cheerleading squad for the past four years and will continue the passion as she heads to Baylor University in the fall. Boykin will attend Baylor University as a Biology major and has also earned a spot on the coveted all girl cheer squad at Baylor. She hopes to eventually become a physical therapist to take her love of sports and people to the next level. "I love sports and I understand what can happen when you play them. I want to help people recover from their injuries." Boykin has participated in cheerleading as well as powerlifting, softball, National Honor Society, Student Council and was the FCCLA secretary. The thing she will miss the most being away from home and the school she has come to think of as a second home, is the friends she made over the years. "I'm going to miss my friends and all their families

that I have gotten so close to. I will be living on campus and I am going to miss my family not being right there but I am excited to start this new chapter." Boykin will spend a busy summer volunteering with habitat for humanity, attending cheer camps in preparation for the upcoming season and traveling. She has trips planned to North Carolina as well as Cozumel, before returning to Lumberton and preparing to move into the dorms at Baylor University. Boykin stated safety was her number one reason for choosing Baylor University. "I visited a lot of campuses and Baylor felt so safe. I like the campus environment and felt like it was the place for me." Boykin is the daughter of Kevin and Renee Boykin of Lumberton and the granddaughter of John and Janie Boykin also of Lumberton and Johnny and Sharon Okun of Colorado.

Congratulations Natalie Marie Orr CLASS OF Business in the future LUMBERTON HIGH SCHOOL

2013!

Chevy Runs Deep

Natalie Orr is ready to take on the world. The Lumberton grad will begin her college career in the fall at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall and plans to make it one the most memorable times in her life. Orr will be attending ETBU pursuing a major in business with a specialty in marketing. "I have always been business minded and I'm a really good salesman so this seems like a good choice for me." Orr received an academic scholarship and a christian leadership scholarship from the college and will also be a member of the all girl ETBU cheerleading team. When asked why she chose ETBU, Orr stated that she traveled and visited many different campuses but when she arrived at ETBU, she felt at home. "I just felt like I should be there. I am going to see where God leads me." Orr will spend her summer working a summer job at a restaurant in Crystal Beach before returning home to pack for her move to Marshall. Orr stated she has several memories she will cherish

from her high school career at LHS but her favorite would have to be the trips she made to and from football games with the cheer team. Orr participated in cheerleading all four years in high school, softball, and track. She was also FCCLA President and

Student Council Treasurer, while keeping up a membership in the National Honor Society and Spanish Club. Orr is the daughter of Eric and Shawn Orr of Lumberton and the grand-daughter of Bobbie Guidry and Frank and June Orr, all of Lumberton.

Capture the memories (Just South of Walmart)

A child's graduation is a time for celebration for the whole family. And just about every family wants those moments captured for life. But we've all watched grainy, out-of-focus

videos that sometimes even miss the graduate's big moment on stage. Even if you've never picked up a camera, with a few simple tips, you can make sure the family memories you capture

are worth saving. No matter how state-of-the-art a camera is, if you don't know how to use it, you shouldn't start learning at the big event. "Get familiar with your equipment," says Ben Gottfried, digital filmmaking and video production instructor at The Art Institutes International Minnesota. "Read the manual, test different lighting conditions. It will increase your comfort level with the camera and make for better shots." Now that you know how to use your camera, make sure you're in a good spot to get the right shots, says Ted Long, academic director for digital filmmaking and video production, visual effects and motion graphics and Web design and interactive media at The Illinois Institute of Art - Schaumburg. "Get to the venue early to set up so you don't have to use the full zoom on your camera from the back of the auditorium." And keep it steady. There's nothing worse than getting a case of motion sickness while watching your family's special moments. "If you want your video to look good, use a tripod," says Patrick Roddy, academic director for digital filmmaking and video production and digital photography at The Art Institute of Tucson. If your grad is speaking at the commencement ceremony or if you want to get interviews with family members about the big day, Long advises you make sure to use an external microphone you plug into the camera instead of the one attached to the camera to ensure that your subjects are audible. Now that you're ready to shoot, it's time to talk about what you should shoot. First, get an establishing shot, says Roddy. A wide shot of the event that shows the grads walking in, the stage and the audience will give your video context. Gottfried suggests you try to rest on a shot. Don't excessively zoom or pan and when you do decide to zoom, make sure it's a slow one. Jarring shots are hard to look at and even harder to edit later. "Shooting a live event can make you anxious to get shots of everything," he says. "Keep one eye on the viewfinder and the other on the action going on around you and strategically move the camera when necessary." "Use the rule of thirds," says Long. "Think of the picture in the frame consisting of a top third, a center third and a bottom third the important stuff needs to happen in the middle third." Get shots of the event from different angles, recommends Roddy. He suggests families use multiple cameras if possible. Because simple video editing software is available for most computers, it can be fairly easy to edit the two videos together. And while you're capturing the day's events for posterity, don't forget to take the time to enjoy the celebration.
