Tough district will test Rebels The Evadale Rebels enter play this year with a large squad of 48 players and with the athletic ability to place high in district 11-1A Division 2 football. The Rebels ended the year last year with only five offensive and five defensive starters returning off last years team but they had four players join the team who did not play last year. Two were move-ins and two were Evadale students who did not play in 2012 for one reason or another. Logan Hare, who completed just three of eight passes last year as a backup quarterback, has taken over the reins for Wes Williams, who graduated. Hare, who is about 6-2 and 170 pounds, brings a lot of athletic ability to the position. Corey, Byrum, a 5-8, 190 pounder returns to deliver the ball to Hare. He was a starter at center last year. Matthew Akridge played guard last year but he has taken his 5-10, 220pound body to the right tackle position. Kaleb Trahan, a 5-11, 215 pounder will man the other tackle position and Chris Moore, a 5-10, 205 pounder will man the left guard position. The right guard position is held by Tristan Reeves who is 5-10, 205. All five of the offensive linemen are seniors. Moore is one of the two move-ins. He moved to Evadale from the Vidor school district. The squad is heavy on seniors. They have 16 seniors, three juniors, two sophomores and one or two freshmen. Jacob Conner is a 3-year starter at running back. He carried the ball 84 times

last year for 457 yards and four touchdowns. He also caught 21 passes for 326 yards and five touchdowns. The Rebels fullback is a bruiser in 5-8, 180 pound Forrest Wright. Last year he started for the Rebels at linebacker. He is a junior. The Rebels also have a returning senior at tight end. Matthew Terry caught six passes for 86 yards last year and his long reception was for 50 yards. He is a 6'3" 210 pound senior. Senior Cody Ingram, a 6-0, 165 pounder did not play last year. Conner, Ackridge, Reeves and Byrum each earned all-district honors on offense last year. Reeves, Sirmons, Trahan and Wright return as starters off last years defensive squad and Conner was one of the teams leading tacklers. Reeves and Sirmons, who is a 5-11, 195 pound senior, both played defensive end last year. Kaleb Trahan, a 5-11, 215 pounds, started last year as a defensive tackle. This means the squad has three of its five defensive linemen returning. Hare and Wright both started at defensive back and linebacker. Kenan Womack, a transfer from Kountze has excellent speed and he will play safety for the Rebels. The other safety position will be manned by Blaine Kilpatrick, a 5-9, 160pound sophomore. The two cornerbacks are Michael Ballard and Cody Ingram. Neither player played last year and both are seniors. Austin Reeves will join See REBELS on PG. 3, SEC. 3

Lady Rebels aiming for playoffs again

The Evadale Lady Rebels went to the regional quarterfinals in volleyball last year, and yet they were not satisfied on a couple of counts. First they would have liked to have gone further and second, for one of the rare years, they dropped a district game. This year their aim is another spot in the playoffs but they have no intention of losing a district volleyball game. Coach Debbie Hollyfield who is a master at the sport has her work cut out for her. Gone are about eight seniors. This year the team is

Wright at a linebacker position. Forest Wright led the defense last year with 47 tackles. Kaleb Trahan had one interception, two forced fumbles and 37 tackles. Logan Hare had two interceptions and one forced fumble. Jacob Conner did not start on defense last year but the senior did have four forced turnovers, one interception and 37 tackles. The Rebels will open their season at Warren on Aug. 30. The Rebels are in a five team district and they will not start district play until Oct. 18.

composed of a group of ladies who are young and inexperienced. They are led by three seniors and also have two juniors on the team. One of their strong points is that they are athletic and have pretty good size. Even the three girls who started did not play full rotations. They played positions and were substituted for as they rotated around the court. Hollyfield says they average about 5-8. The size starts with the See VB on PG. 4, SEC. 3

Tenaha team to beat in Dist. 11-1A-DII

The Tenaha Tigers are the no. 1 ranked team in Class A Div. II in the state, and they are the overwhelming favorite to win the championship in District 11-1A Division II. They have 20 starters returning off a team that finished 2012 with a record of 10-5 in the state finals. Running back Chavis Gregory rushed the ball 239 times for 1,581 yards last year. Teammate Cobe Caraway carried the ball 87 times for 794 yards and eight touchdowns. If that were not enough,

quarterback J.R. Hill had 1,557 yards passing and rushed the ball for another 618 yards and three touchdowns. The three backs combined to rush the ball for nearly 3,000 yards. The defense is led by Denzelle Williams who had 95 tackles and 13 sacks last year, linebacker Jacoby Ivy who had 97 tackles and defensive back Keontas Davis had eight interceptions. Many feel that the after Tenaha, the door is wide open for the other four teams in the district.

Wednesday, August 28, 2013

Last year Mount Enterprise finished the season with a 9-4 record and went to the regional semi finals. This year they suffered major losses to graduation and this opens the door for a battle between them and Evadale for second place. Coach Williams and his staff feel positive that their team can get the job done. The have not looked that effective in two scrimmages this year. First they were edged by Hardin and then they were man han-

middle blockers. Kaelyn Moss is a returning starter. She is a 6-0 senior. The other two middle blockers did not play last year. Savannah Richardson is a 5-10 sophomore who did not play volleyball last year. Hollyfield says she is a hard worker who is smart and doing great. Torie Langston is a 5-10 freshman who Hollyfield pulled up to the varsity unit and she is receiving a lot of playing time. Haleigh Oldbury is a 5-7 outside hitter who is also a returning starter. She is presently leading the team in kills. She is a junior. Hunter Thompson is a 56 senior outside hitter. She was a varsity letterman last year and is a reliable placement hitter. Hannah Conner, is a 5-7 junior setter. She is a returning starter from last year and is doing a good job. The thing that is scary

See 11-1A on PG. 5, SEC. 3

for Evadale is that she is the only setter on the squad and their lack of depth at the position leaves them a sprained ankle away from disaster. Wendy Williams was a jv player last year. The 5-9 junior has developed into the most consistent player on the team this year. She makes few error, plays smart and digs well. Karlie Beard plays the libero position. She is a returning starter from last year. She is a 5-4 junior. This position is basically a defensive specialist where speed in returns and digging is the key to the role. Brittanie Curtis is a 5-4 senior who plays right side hitter. Kortlyn Christian is a 5-4 outside hitter. She is a junior. Hollyfield says one thing about this group of girls is that they work hard every day and this will pay off.

From Section 3, Page 3

Her plan is to have the girls play a tough pre season schedule against 2A and 3A clubs. To date they have a 3-2 record with their only losses coming to Buna. They hope to get a chance to play Buna again before the season is over. Soon they will play in the YMBL tournament where they will get a chance to play a lot of big schools. Hollyfield says that right now the play at the net is a little tricky but she feels that once the big sophomore gets where she understands the game that the team will start to improve. She feels they can be as good as they were last year. Usually they meet a state powerhouse, Iola, in the quarterfinal round. Last year the season ended there but Hollyfield is hoping that they can get past that obstacle this year.

dled by a Kountze squad that was both bigger and faster than they were. The Wildcats have sting players in tailback Justin Johnson and quarterback Josh Leadon. Johnson, a tiny 140 pounder rushed the ball for 1,163 yards and 17 touchdowns. quarterback Leadon was a receiver last year and he caught 23 passes for 444 yards and five touchdowns last year. Sabine Pass and Burkeville both have new coaches. At the district meeting recently both coaches reported that they have about 18 players out for the sport and are hoping that ten to twelve more show up when school starts. Those two teams will probably battle to stay out of the cellar.

It was a nice ride for the Silsbee Tigers in 2012, but bigger and better things lie on the shoulders of a team that is hyped to go further. After reaching the Region III finals in 2012, the Tigers are relying on the experience to help propel them one step further into the state semifinals this season – and the team has all the tools to get it done. Now in his 16th season, Silsbee Head Coach Bobby McGallion knows the team has a target on its back after preseason polls have them as high as no. 10 in the state. But he also knows that the season hasn’t begun and all the talking will have to be done on the field. “I don’t think a lot about the pressure,” McGallion said. “To us, it just doesn’t mean anything because we still have to prove our value on the field. It’s nice to be recognized, but right now it doesn’t matter until we start playing.”

UIL threw in a twist for this season after announcing earlier last season that 3A will have four representives in the playoffs, like both 4A and 5A classifications. Of the four that reach the playoffs, the two teams with the highest enrollment will be Div. I, while the other schools will enter Div. II. Silsbee lost 15 lettermen from its regional finals team, but those returning should be enough to keep a long playoff run going for the Tigers this season. Twelve starters return on both sides of the ball, to give that extra cushion McGallion needs for a successful run towards the playoffs. Of those 12 returning, seven will encompass the offensive side of the ball, where there is sure to be quite a bit of “razzle-dazzle”. Returning statistical leader Pat Reed enters the season as a senior, with potential colleges (Lamar, Texas State University) already eyeing the dualthreat quarterback. Reed (6-2, 185) combined for 3,251 yards including 2,160 yards passing and 27 touchdowns, his best statistical year as a quarterback since starting as a sophomore. He was named Dist. 213A Offensive MVP and was named the most improved player in class 3A by Dave Campbell’s Texas High School Football Magazine. The catalysts around Reed this season will be a host of returning statistical players to help move the ball with plenty of athleticism. Senior Zayon Jackson (58, 160) returns at wide receiver after recording 16 catches for 269 yards with two TDs last season. Also returning is senior RB Floyd Spearman (5-11, 195), who will get plenty of playing time at outside linebacker this season, after a good showing in its regional finals game against Carthage. “We still have some question marks in some spots, including linebacker,” McGallion said. “Floyd will give us some

depth back there.” Senior Kanon Mackey (6-4, 275) returns on the offensive line to lead the Tigers in the trenches. The weakest part of the team will be the offensive line, losing most to graduation. “We have several spots to fill and we’ll be counting on Kanon to guide these guys,” McGallion added. “We have good size to fill the holes but we’ll be inexperienced.” Senior Ty Ligon (6-2, 185) will also anchor the offensive line with Mackey. Other skill positions returning on offense are seniors Chris Elam (5-11, 165) and Chris Elers (6-2, 180). On the defensive side of the ball, five starters return including two experienced on the defensive line. Seniors Seth Adams (6-0, 275) and Elijah Miller (6-0, 190) will anchor the line both playing defensive tackle. At linebacker, junior Roderick Harper (5-11, 170) and senior Colby LeBlanc (5-9, 175) return. Elam returns at defensive back. The road to the playoffs won’t be easy for Silsbee this season, with a strong District 21-3A to go through. But McGallion imple-

mented a tough non-district schedule to help get the team on its toes in preparation of sorts. “It will be one test after another,” McGallion said. “When we have quality competition during nondistrict, it makes us play at a higher level.” Silsbee is picked to win the district this year, after past years of playing second fiddle to West OrangeStark. The top four picked to make the playoffs in 21-3A along with Silsbee and WO-S are Bridge City and Orangefield. Last season, Silsbee finished the season with a 103 record. They defeated Huffman-Hargrave 54-21 in bidistrict, Stafford 45-21 in the regional semifinals and fell to Carthage 50-21 in the regional finals. Carthage eventually fell to El Campo in the state semifinals 29-25. “We will eventually have to go through West OrangeStark,” McGallion said. “The district will be stronger than last year, so it won’t be an easy ride.” Silsbee opens non-district with four 20-4A opponents. They open the season at Port-Neches Groves on Friday at 7:30.

The Silsbee Lady Tigers volleyball team isn’t hard pressed to say that this season is a wash just yet. But Head Coach Lindsay Leach knows it will take some work to get to playoff contention. After three straight years of qualifying for the playoffs, the Lady Tigers are hoping to keep the streak alive in a district that is seemingly getting tougher. “We have tough teams in our district that can beat anyone on any given night,” Leach said. “Now we have four teams qualifying for the playoffs in 3A and in the end, it could create a big mess with everyone vying.” Silsbee was hit hard by graduation and the biggest concern for Leach as the season has begun, is height and lack of varsity experience. “We have girls that have played on varsity but we are having to switch some around to different positions,” Leach said. “It’s a matter of getting them acclamated and cutting out mistakes.” The Lady Tigers have the quickness in the backcourt, but new faces up front will be the question. Senior Shelby Keefer is one that will be switching to outside hitter alongside senior Chanissey Fowler, who has played the position. Also returning will be senior Erin Donalson adding her quickness to the backcourt defensively as a

Sophomores Mariah Waters will be the setter while Keleigh Trabing will play middle blocker. Also newcomers junior Kim Smith will play backcourt defense and outside hitter, and junior Quintessa White will play backcourt defense. Other seniors include Kennetria Davis at middleblocker and Allison Davis as defense specialist. “We have a lot of high hopes for our team this season,” Leach said. “Our goal is to win district.” Silsbee captured district championships in 2010 and

2011 seasons, earning byes in the first round of the playoffs before falling in the area rounds. Last season, the Lady Tigers finished in third place in District 21-3A and lost in the bidistrict round to Liberty. Though Leach says the district will be tough, Orangefield is entering the season having lost 11 to graduation. But concerns will be critical games against HardinJefferson, West Orange-Stark, HamshireFannett, Bridge City and Buna. Buna enters the season with a new head coach and renewed life, which Leach says will be tough to play against. “Their new coach is actually from Silsbee,” she

said. “That gives them that extra edge to play at a different level against us.” This is the fifth season for Leach as head coach in Silsbee.

Silsbee band putting a little rock in the beat By Andrea Whitney reporter@silsbeebee.com

The Silsbee High School Tiger Band is preparing to take the 2013-14 to the next level, with a first time theme of progressive rock. Under the direction of Band Director Todd Patterson, who is returning for his tenth year, and Assistant Director Aaron Barnes, the group is 75 kids strong with 22 incoming freshman. The theme this year is the music of the progressive rock band Trans Atlantic. While it is a first time that the band has adopted a rock theme, Patterson stated that the music of Trans Atlantic lends itself to be melodic and cleverly adapted to marching band music. "We have never really done a rock album or theme," he said. "The kids

are pumped about it and so am I." Selections this year from Trans Atlantic will include, "Overture/Whirlwind", "Rose Colored Glasses," "Is it Really Happening," and "Whirlwind Reprise". The popular Tiger Band will be guided this year by returning Drum Major Autumn White, a senior and Kristy Barnes, a junior. The color guard will again join the band this year with 12 members led Director Kaylon by Matkin, with the assistance of Color Captain senior Bethany Myers, and Color Guard Lieutenant senior James Walker. Color Guard and Drum Line camps began July 15 and the talented group began their official band camps on July 29, where they worked daily to perfect selections that will get

the crowds on their feet. Contests this year will include the pre-UIL Marching Contest that will be held on October 5 at Port Neches-Groves High School and the UIL Marching Contest following on October 19, also held at Port Neches- Groves High School. Although this is a nonadvancing year in contests for the Tiger Band, the group will again have the opportunity to advance in

2013-14 Silsbee High School Band

competition in the fall of 2014. This year will be all about coming together as one and getting the crowds on their feet with a new mix of rock music. The Tiger Band will also host all regional tryouts in the SHS theater on January 29 and will also host the solo and ensemble contest as well on February 7-8 of 2014. The SHS Tiger Band will also again play host to this year's UIL Sight Reading Contest on February

26. Fundraisers this year will include a fall sale of cookie dough and the ever popular discount cards that will be sold in January. Money collected from the fundraisers will go towards the annual spring trip where band members will travel to Disneyworld in Orlando, Florida during spring break. There, band members will attend a sight reading clinic and make a studio recording. With a new genre of music that promises excitement, the band members and directors could not be

happier to get the season underway with a bang. Patterson and Barnes are working daily with the band to ensure that the music of the 2013-14 season will be one not easily forgotten. "We are looking forward to another year of working together with the kids and putting out some great music," Patterson stated. The Tiger Band is anxiously awaiting that first performance at the first high school football game on August 30.

Tigers tabbed as the team to beat in 21-3A.

Silsbee looks to dethrone WO-S By Daniel Elizondo editor@silsbeebee.com

It may come down to the final game of the season for two teams in District 213A, but on paper, the team to beat is Silsbee, according to many in the preseason polls. Since West Orange-Stark has held claim to the district

championship last season, the Mustangs just aren’t quite ready to relinquish their title. But the Silsbee Tigers are boasting 12 returning starters including statistical leader Pat Reed at QB to help propel the team to the top spot. This year, UIL imple-

mented a 4-team playoff bracket that will see the two teams with the largest enrollment to enter Div. I, while the two smaller schools will enter Div. II. The new format means that Div. I will gain one more playoff game, the same amount Div. II teams have been playing since

moving to a DI-II format. If the Silsbee Tigers qualify for the playoffs once again this year, they will be in Div. I regardless of who enters because they boast the largest enrollement figures in high school in 213A. Reed, who accounted for 3,251 yards offensively with 27 TDs, is ready to lead the Tigers on a run that they hope includes a long playoff run. “We have to play each See 21-3A on PG. 11, SEC. 3

I regional finals appearance last season, the Mustangs were also reaching the same level in Div. II. Div. I colleges are already eyeing Silsbee dualthreat QB Reed, who is hoping to improve on the season with higher hopes towards a state appearance. Returning for Silsbee will be experienced linemen OT Kanon Mackey (6-4, 265), OT Ty Ligon (6-4, 245) and DT Seth Adams (6-0, 285). Helping Reed move the ball will be senior RB Floyd Spearman (5-11, 190) and WR Zayon Jackson. will look to replace a host of players on both sides of the ball. WO-S is fine on the skill positions, having welcomed Beaumont Ozen transfer TB Chris James (510, 185). Also returning is Deionte Thompson (6-2, 175) at free safety. The Mustangs will also rely on QB Chase Rutledge and SE Dre Spencer to help move the ball in a spread offense. Center Jacob Hryhorchuk (6-2, 250) and NG Octavious Crosson (6-0, 220) will anchor the trenches on both sides of the ball. Bridge City is picked to finish third in the district and could be the second Div. I school to make the playoffs. The Cardinals return eight starters from a 5-6 team last season that qualified for the bidistrict playoffs. Leading the Cardinals will be RB Ashton Hunter (6-0, 205), who returns as one of the best backs in the district with 1,355 yards and 14 TDs last season. Also returning on offense are OL Jackson Roberts (60, 252).

Officers attended an officer camp on June 3-6 in Dallas that was hosted by HTE Dance, the largest officer training camp in the U.S. The officer camp focused on teaching the Tigerette Officers how to demon-

strate the leadership qualities and responsibilities needed to lead a drill team. Officers also learned choreography and came up with their own routines. Awards at the officer camp were given based on improvement of individual squads and teams did not compete against one another, placing the sole focus of the camp on the improvement of each individual squad. The Tigerette officers earned the most awards to date within the past three years. The second of the two

camps, Line Camp/Team Training Camp, was held in July in Austin and led by HTE Dance as well. The girls learned five custom routines, three pep-rally routines and had the opportunity to work with Brandon Bryant on a custom routine. The group will also be performing military and jazz routines and will bring back a new version of an old favorite, the saw horse routine. The Tigerettes began

summer practices after attending camp and had two weeks of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. practice as well as one week of 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. evening practices. "I wanted them to have practice on the field during the actual time that they will be performing at games, to give their bodies a chance to adapt to the heat and the field," Chandler said. Practice will continue

everyday after school in preparation for the first game that will be held Aug. 30. 2013-14 Silsbee Football Trainers are, (from left) Justin Whitney, Chelsye Eddings, Cherri Burrell, Doc John Williamson, Cody Callaway, Aaron Whitehead, and not pictured Max Hugon.

Trainers do the job behind the scenes Silsbee has six students participating in the training course for the 2013-14 school year. The trainers is a year long course that takes place during the athletic period and gives students a PE credit. Students must be tested and meet state requirements for CPR, first aid and AED training. After they pass those tests they become involved in on the job training.

They learn to administer taping, wound care and hydration duties. Four of the students this year are second year students. They include Aaron Whitehead, Kody Callaway, Justin Whitney and Cheri Burrell. Each of these students are sophomores except Callaway who is a senior. This year there are two newcomers who will be joining the squad. They are

freshman Max Hugon and sophomore Chelsye Eddings. Over the years Silsbee has had a lot of trainers who went on to receive scholarships to college. John Williamson, who is the trainer and instructor for the students, reports that the class is a lot of work. Trainers work year-round. The spring seasons are sometimes harder than football season.

During football season everyone goes to the varsity games and then student trainers go the the sub varsity away games. During the spring the students are assigned to a particular sport and they often work on their own. John Williamson states that being a trainer is not just an activity‌. it is a working detail.

New leadership for Silsbee cheer By Andrea Whitney reporter@silsbeebee.com

Jennifer Tomas and Angie Smith have worked within the walls of Silsbee High School for years. Working together in the same office, focusing on attendance issues. The pair will now be taking on a new role this year as the new Silsbee Tiger cheerleading sponsors. Both were surprised when High School Principal Eldon Franco approached them in need of sponsors for the cheerleaders. "I was surprised," Smith said. "I have a son and I don't have a girl.” “And my girl does not cheer,” Tomas added. Even without the years of raising a daughter under their belt, these two dedicated women have made decision to lead the Silsbee High School Tiger Cheerleaders in the 2013-14 season. "We thought about it for a couple of weeks and then decided to do it because of the girls," Smith said. "They needed us and we were there." Tomas and Smith dove in head first at the end of last school year and have gone full speed ahead preparing their squad for the upcoming season. Both want to make sure that the distinction is known that they are not coaches but sponsors. "We may not have the degree of a coach, but we are going to be there for whatever the girls need. A sponsor handles everything behind the scenes and with the girls. Whatever they need, we are going to make sure they

have it," Tomas said. The duo will lead a squad of girls and will be assisted by senior Katelyn Halvorson and senior Ashley McGillbery, who will be serving as captains of the squad. The team began summer practice in mid-July and have not slowed down since. Summer practices were held on MondayThursday where the cheerleaders learned new routines, worked on their jumps, stunt formations, and perfected the ever popular school song and fight song.

The practices, which will continue throughout the year are time blocked and structured to ensure each cheerleader receives the most out of the practice. Captains stayed after daily to work with Smith and Tomas in planning the next day's practice. "The captains were willing to work with us on all levels," Smith said. "This is their squad, their legacy that they will be leaving behind." Together the group traveled to Moody Gardens in Galveston this past August for the week long National Cheerleading Association Cheer Camp where the girls brought home four superior blue ribbons in cheer and chant routines, two red excellent ribbons in cheer and chant routines, and won the spirit stick three days, which allowed the team to bring the coveted item home to display in the school. The group was also awarded the Herkie Award for outstanding leadership, sportsmanship, and spirit and had six girls nominated for All American Cheerleader. "That was a pretty awesome experience for us," Tomas said. "We were so happy and so proud for the girls." "We have a great group of girls who work well together," Smith said. "Some are new, some have

been to camp before and really stepped up to help Jen and I make sure we were prepared to help the girls." The squad is currently busily preparing for the first game that will be held August 30 at Port NechesGroves. All involved are anxious and excited to see how their hard work will pay off on the field that first game night. With only four home games this season, the Tiger cheerleaders are working hard to ensure that fans will have a memorable experience at every game, especially the home games. Plans are in the making for the eagerly anticipated Pink Out game that will be held in October in honor of the Julie Rogers Gift of Life Foundation. The cheerleaders will again sell t-shirts, sport pink bows in their hair, wear pink bloomers, and use pink pom-poms during the game. Other events that the team is looking forward to is the annual "Toasty Toes" shopping trip that will be held in December. A long time tradition at Silsbee High School, the girls will raise money on their own

and take a group of children from Kirby Elementary Christmas shopping. This event has long been one of the favorites of the Tiger Cheerleaders. The cheerleaders are currently working alongside their sponsors in planning a number of other activities that will benefit both the team and the community. Another bright point among the cheerleaders is being able to perform their signature crowd favorites, "Eye of the Tiger" ,"Land of 1,000 Dances", and of course, "Welcome to the Jungle". These routines have become a staple of a Silsbee High School football games and both the cheerleaders and the crowds of fans looking forward to them once again. With all of their activities, Silsbee High School Tiger Cheerleaders keep one thing first and foremost in their minds, to promote spirit and generate excitement. "Our biggest goal is to promote the girls and the school spirit," Tomas said. "We want the community to realize and support just how much dedication, hard work, time, effort and heart that goes into what these girls do. We hope to see a lot of community support." This year's squad is working together to become one of the most successful squads to date. With a large number of in-

coming freshman cheerleaders on the junior varsity level, the varsity girls have taken the role of surrogate big sisters to show them the way. However, successful on the field, practice or at camp, the 2013-14 Tiger Cheerleaders also permeate success off the field as well. Each is a leader in her own right and the group has gone over and above to welcome newcomers to the

school. "One of the best things about SHS is the gift that the students have with welcoming each other," Tomas added. "Cheerleader or not, football player or not, the kids of SHS are some of the most down to earth kids I have ever seen. We are looking forward to another successful year not only for our cheerleaders but for all the students of SISD."

Aristocats ready to entertain crowd

By Andrea Whitney reporter@silsbeebee.com

The Kountze High School Aristocats have an exciting and promising season ahead of them. Director Carli Powell, a KHS graduate, will take the reins as director for the first time this year. Powell served as assistant director last year but will be leading the team solo this year. The Aristocats have 10 girls dancing this year with Captain Caitlyn Morrison, a senior, and Lieutenant Staci Richardson, a junior, and Line Sergeants Ashton Sharpe and Jessica Comeaux guiding the team into what they hope to be a new beginning for the girls. "These girls have had a rough couple of years, but they have overcome it all," Powell said. "We are steadily growing and looking forward to the future." The Aristocats held their own annual officer camp at the high school this year instead of traveling out of town. DanceLine Elite came in and hosted the camp at the high school June 17-19 where the officers learned routines, technique, and the leadership qualities and responsibilities necessary to build and grow a successful drill team. Powell taught the line camp this year and members learned several routines, kick techniques, and worked on perfecting their dances for the upcoming season. Summer practice began Aug. 5 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. where the drill team members worked on all aspects of their routines. This season, the See ARIST on PG. 31, SEC. 3

Kountze High School Band

Kountze band aiming for sweepstakes

For the past 16 years, the Kountze High School band has had great success for small school bands. The group is under the direction of Mr. Robert Fife, who is well known throughout this area of Texas. Ten times in the past 16 years, they managed to earn sweepstakes awards. To accomplish this, they must earn a first division rating for marching in the fall and a first division rating for concert and sight reading in the spring. Each year they seemed to graduate a lot of talent and each year they have responded with an equally fine group of musicians. Last year, the concert band at Kountze was entered int he State Honor Band competition and Kountze made it to the finals where they finished

This year, the band has 53 members, which include nine seniors. Due to cutbacks in the staff at KISD, the band lost one of its three instructors and the other instructors had to take a small cut in pay. Still, the group is excited about the coming year. To offset the loss of the assistant band director, the group has added some part time workers. Kayla Hargraves, will work with the drum line. She is a student at Lamar and she is involved in the student private lesson pro-

Defensively the Lions have outstanding cornerbacks in Best and Arnold. Both players have experience. The free safety is Jayden Cunigan and the strong safety is Deaontre Morgan. Coach Franklin will have to rebuild the area of the front seven. Ashton Whittle, a 5-10, 175 pounder and Charlie Kappleman, who is about the same size, give him something to build around. Whittle is a big play defender at middle linebacker and Kappleman has a lot of experience at

They had a one point loss to Anahuac, a six point loss to Kirbyville and a two point loss to Woodville. A win in any of these games would have put Kountze in the playoffs. The lions actually led Woodville until late in the game. The Lions have not made the playoffs for 40 years. This year Franklin has high hopes that they break the

Kountze focuses on rebuilding tradition

The Kountze Lions Lady volleyball team adopted a new motto and hope to return to their days of greatness with efforts on this year’s volleyball court. The motto "Rebuilding tradition by focusing on basic fundamentals", speaks volumes about what they are attempting to do. Coach Pam Orsot has a strong group of players that include six seniors. Orsot feels this year could be something of a down year for volleyball in the district. The team should be con-

tenders this year for a spot in the playoffs. District 20-2A is composed of Corrigan-Camden, Deweyville, Hemphill, Kirbyville, Newton, WarWoodville and ren, Kountze. They are not overly tall, but the team does have two returning middle blockers who are near the 6-foot range. Payton Hawley and Destiny Warren are both seniors and they should provide the team with some strong defense at the net. Both of them are returning

the band this year is that they only have one tuba player. At this time the leaders for the band are in place. The head drum major is Joey Schoenfeld. Kountze cheerleaders anxious for new season

By Andrea Whitney reporter@silsbeebee.com

After a busy year on and off the field, the cheerleaders at Kountze High School are anxiously looking forward to a new season full of promise. The total of 15 girls, including freshman mascot, Ashton Peters, will be led this year by sponsors/coaches Tonya Moffett and Billie Tate. Moffett is beginning her third year as a cheer sponsor and Tate is a veteran sponsor, having over 25 years experience in leading cheer squads. New this year will be the absence of a Head Cheerleader or Captain and CoCaptain. "This year, Ms. Moffett and I will be the head cheerleaders," Tate said. "We have found that having all the girls serve as equals works out better for us." Tate went onto to say the reasoning behind the decision as being one of fairness and equality. "In the past we have had chaos and this way no one is above anyone else," she said. "We will select one girl each week to serve as a leader among the girls. She will help delegate duties and help with activities but all decisions will go through myself or Ms. Moffett." The girls, along with Tate and Moffett, attended cheer camp during the month of July at Moody Gardens in Galveston along with several other local school such as Kelly High School of Beaumont and West Orange-Stark. Days at camp began early with the girls rising at 6 a.m. and not completing their days until around 8 p.m. Cheers, chants, tumbling, and dance routines were learned and perfected and the girls brought home a Superior Award for their continuous outstanding performances. The cheerleaders were also thrilled when they were honored with the coveted spirit stick to bring home. This year's squad consists of two freshman, two sophomores, six juniors, and five seniors. Once again, the upperclassmen on the cheerleading squad have gone over and above to help the incoming freshmen cheerleaders and those who are participating in the sport for the first time, feel welcome. "The freshmen came right in, they all work very well together," Moffett stated.

The Kountze Lion cheerleaders, along with their sponsors began daily practices Wednesday, August 21. Practices are held each day after school on Monday through Wednesday and the girls will cheer at games on Thursdays and Fridays. Also in the works are several fundraising efforts over the next few months that will include bake sales, car washes and homecoming activities.

Tate advised that this year's main goal for the cheerleaders is spirit building. The group will focus solely on spirit building and will not be competing this year. "We are just very excited to start the season and hope to have a successful year of spirit building. District 10-2A Division I is almost always the toughest division top to bottom in Southeast Texas. It seems annually that the Newton Eagles and the Kirbyville Wildcats can be counted on to field one of the top teams in the state and one of them will probably go far in the playoffs. East Chambers seems to have a team capable of going two or three rounds deep each year. Woodville and Anahuac are teams that can usually field a contender that is capable of slipping by one of the other teams if they have an off night. This year the field is even tougher with the Kountze Lions and the Woodville Eagles fielding teams capable of earning a spot in the playoffs and doing some damage once they get there. Last year Newton made it all the way to the state semifinals and compiled a 13-1 record. This year they have eight offensive and seven defensive starters returning off that team and they are the clear favorites to win the district championship this year. They area led by running backs Kevin Shorter and Brandon Johnson. They run behind a line led by Tyler Gibson. Last season, Shorter ran for 1,810 yards, and had 31 rushing touchdowns and five receiving touchdowns.

Johnson had 1,250 yards and 17 touchdowns. Defensively, they are led by linebackers Anthony Hadnot and Chedrick Hanks. These two players combined to force nine fumbles and had 200 tackles and 16 sacks. East Chambers figures to be second in the district. They have seven offensive and four defensive starters returning. They will miss the running of the great little back Glenn Roberts, but they be tough to beat. Quarterback Brandon Johnson passed for 1,249 yards and six touchdowns last year. He has a good core of receivers returning. Defensively this team is led by linebacker Cody Casey and defensive back Jarrod Guillory. Last year Casey, who is a big guy at 6-4, 250 pounds, was in on 148 tackles. Guillory had 79 tackles and three interceptions. Kountze has been showing steady improvement the past two years. Last year mental let downs probably kept them out of the playoffs. They lost close games to Kirbyville and a close game that they led throughout to Woodville that kept them out of the playoffs. In the end they finished the season with a record of 5-5. Either of those games would have moved them to 6-4 and they would have

had a spot in the big dance. The Lions strength is their skill positions. Statically they did not look great but that is largely due to the fact that they played a huge number of players last year and that will make them stronger this year. Their numbers are down a little this year. Last year they had nearly 90 out for football. They opened fall training with 59 out this year, They still managed to have eight offensive and nine defensive starters returning to action this year. Offensively they are led by quarterback Justin Harper. Grayland Arnold, and Rowdy Teel all saw action last year at QB. Arnold and Teel will both see action this year at receiver. Blake Best will join them at wide receiver and all three of them will play defensive back. Jamazdon Powell is the most experience running back. Defensively the team is lead by linebackers Ashton Whit-

tle, and Charlie Kappleman. Best, Arnold, and Teel all play defensive back as does Deontra Morgan and Jayden Cuningan. The tough work will be molding a strong offensive and defensive line. Coach Tracy Franklin does have some strong candidates for those positions. Kountze should make the big jump to the top three in the district. Franklin returns for his second year as head coach and defensive coordinator. James Harper also returns but the remainder of the coaching staff is filled by new coaches. Their development and interaction will be the key to this team. Kirbyville is the favorite for the fourth spot. They appear to be much stronger this year. Experience is a big factor for them. They have only one offensive and four defensive starters returning. Tradition is a big plus in their favor. A good portion See 10-2A on PG. 31, SEC. 3

of their team will be made up with sophomores and juniors. Defensively they are led by juniors Tevin Samuel and defensive end Monte Diggles. Their top sophomore defensive candidate is TyAndre Cooper. Woodville trailed Kountze for most of the game last year but found a way to win in the critical moments. This year Steve Fentress has five offensive and five defensive starters returning off that 4-6 squad. This should be rebuilding year for the Eagles but they could make some noise. Anahuac has been a power in this district but they have been off the past couple of years. This year

focus of the team is to promote school spirit and support the team and the community of Kountze. "We are hoping that this year will be the year that we build and develop a strong team," Powell said. "We are all looking forward to working together to be the best we can be and can't wait to hit the field on August 30 for our first game."

they have three offensive and three defensive starters returning off a 5-6 bi-district finalist team. Offensively their key players are lineman Alexis Grimaldo and wide receiver Wesley Smith. Quarterback Josh Cooper threw for 552 yards and nine touchdowns. Defensively they are led by linebacker Chris O'Bannion who had 96 tackles and defensive back Tyre Raymond who had 61 tackles. Warren has also shown improvement in recent years. Last year they ended the season at 5-5 with two district wins. They have six offensive and six defensive starters

returning off that team. The team is led offensively by runningback Parker Lambright and offensive lineman Grayland Steubing. Defensively the team is led by linebacker Caleb Crittenden, and defensive back Rian O'Quin. This team could move up in the pack. Last year they had a big upset at the end of the season and if they continue improvement they more than any other team could upset the expected order. The big word for Hardin is

experience. They have eight offensive and eight defensive starters returning off a team that was 1-9 last year. They have more experience than any team other than Newton and Kountze. The thing that is unknown is whether that experience can be turned into a quality squad. Top to bottom this is a loaded district. It is not unthinkable that two of these teams could meet in the regional finals.

New coach, new system, new hopes By Daniel Elizondo editor@silsbeebee.com

It isn’t easy swallowing a winless season, but new and refreshed faces in Lumberton may make the transition much easier.

After hiring seasoned coach Larry veteran Haynes, the Lumberton Raiders have gained renewed motivation and have simply put the past behind. “Change is alway better,” Haynes said. “We are hop-

ing for a better outlook on the season. With change, things will be greater.” Haynes brings a wealth of football knowledge to Lumberton, having started his head coaching career in Raider Nation from 198991. There, he guided the Raiders to a 19-11 record and garnered two Coach of the Year awards for his efforts. He then went to 5A Clear Lake, improving an ailing team with a 33-10 record, four playoff appearances, two undefeated seasons, two district and two bidistrict titles. From Clear Lake, Haynes coached at Haltom for five seasons, Crosby and at 2A Hardin for five years, where he guided the team to its first ever playoff appearance including two bidistrict championships. Overall, Haynes has accomplished a 148-76-3 head coaching record before retiring, until Lumberton came calling once again. “I’ve always called Lumberton home,” Haynes said. “I missed the kids, the camaraderie and the interaction. Our son was born here and it was my first head coaching job. I enjoy it here and I love the community.” Haynes knew he was inheriting a winless team and isn’t a stranger to turning programs around, having done that for most of his career in virtually every head coaching helm he has held. Though he was enjoying his retirement life playing golf or watching a good movie on occasion, Haynes has returned to the field and set the tone in Lumberton with his tenacity. A spread offense has

been implemented and Haynes will say that the team is still learning the terminology, which he says puts them one step behind other teams. “We are behind the 8-ball right now,” he said. “Our biggest weakness right now is that we are still teaching formations and philosophy, while other teams have done that in spring.” Haynes was hired in late spring and the team lost a considerable amount time to learn and practice during spring. The Raiders are banking on a fast learning curve and will rely on four returning on offense and four on defense this season. Offensively, senior QB Drew Manley returns along with senior WR Dalton

Borne. Offensive linemen Evan Barrios and Garrett Will also return. On defense, senior DE Kelby Meyers, senior LB Brandon Thomas, senior LB Caleb Cook, and senior DB Sam Jones return. Lumberton will have its work cut out being in one of the toughest districts in the state. 20-4A proves that they produce some of the best in the state each year, now with Nederland, Beaumont Central, Vidor and Beaumont Ozen the favorites to top out the league. Lumberton enters the season on an 11-game losing streak and hopes to turn that around. Haynes is confident the team can get it done, relying on its size and physical

capabilities as a team. Newcomers for Lumberton include sophomore safety Brenner Boykin, sophomore LB Caleb Thomas, sophomore RB/WR Tim Rhodes, sophomore C Trent White, and junior OT Chase Flores. Lumberton opens its season on Friday, Aug. 30 hosting Goose Creek Memorial for a 7:30 kickoff. The Raiders begin district play on Sept. 27, hosting Port Neches-Groves at 7:30 p.m. for homecoming. “This district is salty as any,” Haynes said. “There are a lot of teams that used to be 5A teams, so it is tough to compete with them. But you can assure that we are doing our best to turn this thing around.”

Lumberton aiming for playoff run By Daniel Elizondo editor@silsbeebee.com

Lumberton volleyball is looking to take it a step further this season in hopes of extending a playoff run from last year. The Lady Raiders return with plenty of weapons to get the job done. Now in her second season, Head Coach Megan O’Quinn is molding the team back to playoff status, now already with a 5-0 start. Players to watch are de-

fensive specialists senior Alexis Lee and junior Hailey Ferguson. Junior Brandi Dela Rosa returns to block the middle. Offensively, the Lady Raiders enter the new season with sophomore outside hitter Haley Hood and rightside outside hitter Lauren Scarborough, a junior. Seniors returning are Allison Valastro, Macy Mitchell, Shay Mitchell and Kelsea Hall. Other juniors include Emilee Sitton, Emma Ben-

son, Kayla Thomas, Lanie Smith and Lauren Glover. In her first season as head coach in Lumberton, O’Quinn guided the Lady Raiders to a 24-9 record and reached the area round of the 4A playoffs. Lumberton finished in third place in 20-4A last season before defeating Humble Summer Creek in the first round. The Lady Raiders fell to Magnolia in three straight games in the area round. Nederland team to beat in 20-4A By Daniel Elizondo editor@silsbeebee.com

The competition continues to get tougher in District 20-4A, but the team to beat remains the Nederland Bulldogs. Entering the 2013 season after reaching the 4A Region III finals and 11 returning starters, it’s no secret that the Bulldogs are picked to finish as league champs. But one team making a surge in the district this season will undoubtedly by

Beaumont Central, under new head coach Toby Foreman, a former West Orange-Stark and La Marque assistant. Nederland finished the 2012 season at 12-2 and took the district crown with a 7-0 record to boot. The Bulldogs are under Larry Neumann and will rely on returning DL De Shawn Washington (6-3, 280), a Texas A&M recruit, who finished with 16 sacks last season. Also returning are RB Kendrick Hopkins (5-9.

The Jaguars are hoping for big changes from Foreman, who brings playoff experience to the table. Garrison Mitchell (6-0, 185) returns as Central’s leading statistical receiver having finished with 35 catches for 406 yards last season on offense and recorded 63 tackles and two INT’s on defense. Also returning for Central are TE Chris Allen (62, 220), OT Jamal Fontenot (6-4, 267), C Zach Griffin (5-10, 209), RB Kamon Darby (6-1, 180), SS James Locke (5-10, 185), QB Michael Jacquet (6-2, 185), and Devwah Whaley (5-10, 175). Lumberton band grows to success

By Andrea Whitney reporter@silsbeebee.com

The Lumberton Raider Band is gearing up for another season full of promise. This year's band is the largest the school has ever had, according to Band Director Ross Boothman, who is beginning his 22nd year with the district. The band has 160 members with approximately 60-65 incoming freshmen. "Our large number of incoming freshmen is credited to the middle school band directors, Amber Zuech and Noelle Maldonado," Boothman said. "The work ethic that they instilled in these kids is amazing. It makes our job so easy. This has been the best start to a school year that I have ever seen." Boothman will be joined this year by assistant band directors Keith Zuech and Tim Pallone, along with head drum major Maddie Corkran, drum majors Kelsey Cazares and Raylin Hooks, and color guard officer captains Bethany Lisenby and guard Lt. Ashley Shipherd, who will lead a team of 12 Color Guard members. Although the theme for the year is yet undecided, fans can expect an eclectic mix from the popular broadway play, Jesus

Christ Superstar as well as a song called "The Prayer", previously performed by Josh Groban and "Allejuiah", which has been performed by K.D. Lang and featured in the movie "Shrek" Raider band officers and drum majors traveled to Texas A&M University in Commerce during the month of June for leadership camp. The camp is known for utilizing a "lab" setting to teach leadership, communication, and team building skills that the band members will use on a daily basis. After leadership camp, the group began their summer band rehearsals. Rehearsals for percussion members and color guard began mid July and the full summer band began July 29. Members rehearsed from 8-11 a.m. and 12-2 p.m. The group was on the field each day from 911a.m. and the rest of the time they practiced in the band hall due to the severe Texas heat. Rehearsals will continue on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. and on Wednesdays until 5 p.m. Aside from playing at games, pep rallies, and events, the Raider Band will also be perfecting their skills for the October 5 pre-

As if rehearsals and competition aren't enough to keep the talented group busy, they are also busy planning fundraisers. They will once again actively participate in the annual Pink Out game and wear varied pink attire in support of the Julie Rodgers Gift of Life Foundation. Lumberton cheerleaders ready for season By: Andrea Whitney reporter@silsbeebee.com

The Lumberton Raiders cheerleaders are gearing up for another great year of spirit filled fun, competition and camaraderie. Returning sponsors/coaches Tina Hall and Sheryl Dunham are working daily with the squad to ensure that this will be a year to remember. This year's Raider cheerleading squad consists of a total of 26 girls with 10 on the varsity team and 16 on the junior varsity team. Both Dunham, who serves as the district coordinator

for cheerleading, and Hall, who is assistant principal at Lumberton High School, will once again bring a wealth of knowledge, guidance and leadership to a sport that is growing and ever changing. The Raider Cheerleaders started out their preparation for the 2013-14 season early in the summer by attending the National Cheerleading Association Cheer Camp, held in Galveston. The camp is an annual event for cheerleading squads nationwide where they learn new cheer, chant and dance routines as well

as tumbling. Lumberton cheerleaders new and returning, proved to be a force to be reckoned with, bringing home the title of Camp Champions in Gametime, which is a combination of chants and cheers and also winning the title in Extreme Routine, which is a dance routine paired with tumbling. The summer camp also served as an opportunity for the girls to get to know each other and develop those bonds that will no doubt last a lifetime. upperclassmen "Our have really done an amaz-

ing job with welcoming our freshmen," Hall said. "They provided guidance, support and friendship during the entire week at camp and are continuing to do so." The cheerleaders will be led by Varsity Captain Lyndi Stanley and Varsity Co-Captain Kendall McDonald, and Junior Varsity Captain Carlie Verde and Co-Captain Ashley Crites. The squad will travel to San Marcos in November for regional competition and again in January for See CHEER on PG. 37, SEC. 3

After a dismal season in 2012, Lumberton will continue to battle uphill and regain its football strength after a winless season. state competition. Nationals will be held in February in Orlando, FL and if past history is any indicator, these girls will once again come home winners. The group competed in last year's National High School Cheerleading Championships placing third in the nation. The competition was broadcast internationally on the ESPN network to 32 countries and over 100 million people. "These girls keep their grades up, perform at games, help with events such as cheer clinics and compete as well," Hall said. "They do it all. To see them place third in the entire nation was a moment none of us will ever forget." Joining the cheerleaders again this year is the Blue Crew, a group of six high school gentlemen, who are present at every game to support the team and the cheerleaders. While they are by no means "cheerleaders", the Blue Crew's primary focus is to promote school spirit on and off the field. Members of the Blue Crew must apply and are chosen based on charcter, leadership and school spirit. This year's Blue Crew includes sophmores through seniors who can be seen at games running flags and throwing spirit items to the crowd to

The group has the advantage this year of practicing in their brand new facility and up unitl this point, had to travel off campus to practice and credits the support of the administration and community for their success. "Our district, administration, and community has been very supportive of our girls," Dunham said. "The

keep the excitement high. New to the district and schools across the state is the recognition of cheerleading as a sport by the UIL. This will mean stricter guidelines and additional safety training for sponsors, coaches, and trainers such as concussion training. While the guidelines and training mean additional hours of study, Hall and Dunham could not be happier. "This is a step in the right direction," Dunham said. "These girls work just as hard as any other sport." The cheerleaders are currently preparing for the an-

Activities will span district wide and the squad will again be selling t-shirts to commenerate the event. Last year's Pink Out was a huge success with the district collecting over $20,000. The annual PinkOut game will be held this

year on October 11. Other future events include the cheer clinic that is hosted by the Lumberton cheerleaders every year. The clinic will be in September this year and plans are currently underway for girls in kindegarten through sixth grade to come and enjoy a day with the cheerleaders where they will learn a cheer, chant, and

With an itenary full of games and competition, the Lumberton Raiders Cheerleaders are anxiously awaiting that first game to get the season kicked off and are planning for another memorable season. "We are looking for another great year," Hall said. "This has been a phenomenal experience watching these girls grow into beautiful young women on and off the floor."

Go Raiders, Go!

Lumberton The Raiderettes are once again looking to dominate half time this season. Together with the Raider Band, the girls have become a popular staple at games and peprallies with their upbeat and exciting routines. April York will serve as the Drill Team Director, returning for her fifth year. The drill team will again stand strong with 33 members, eleven of which are new to the team. They will be led by Captain Katelyn Kirk, a senior, First Lieutenant Emily Majors, a junior and Lieutenant Carli Newell. Officers attended the American Dance Drill

Team Officer Camp in midJune near Dallas and learned several routines that will be showcased at the pep rallies and games. The dances consisted of a variety of hip-hop routines performed to a mix of popular music and a also learned a jazz routine which will be utilized for All American tryouts. Line Camp was held for the entire drill team on August 5-9 at Lumberton High School. The girls learned and perfected field jazz, field kick, and field pom routines, along with learning two new pep-rally routines. The Raiderettes brought home numerous awards from camp that display their dedication, hard work and leadership skills as a team. Routines this season will involve a lot of props such

as saw horses and horseshoes, and the girls will be debuting five new routines for the football season. The exact music this year that will accompany the routine is being kept under strict lock and key, but York promises it will be a great surprise and something new that will get fans on their feet with excitement. The Raiderettes are planning to attend several competitions this year, starting in the near future. Fundraisers this year will be both a fall and spring dance camp for younger girls and a bowling tournament. The Raiderette will also be participating in the annual Pink Out game and month of activiities to benefit the Julie Rodgers Gift of Life Foundation. The Pink Out game and activi-

ties have become a favorite of the drill team and each year the team brings something bigger and brighter to the stage. York explained that this year's group of girls is working hard on and off the field to ensure that all members are learning the routines and having a good time doing it. "The girls really try to pull each other in. If someone is having a bad day, the other girls will do whatever it takes to help them through it. That is what makes us an awesome team. They all put their heart and soul in it." York and the Raiderettes are busily preparing to debut their routines at the first pep-rally and game on August 30 and are hopeful for a successful and excititng year.
