ello from Special Collections! We’ve been very busy the past couple months here in the archives. We’ve been hosting events, working on projects, digitizing materials, and much more! We’ve even got new graduate assistants, student workers, and interns that have been great additions to the team, and who have helped us acquire, preserve, and provide access to materials pertaining to our history.

We are actively seeking new collections to aid the research of current and future scholars. We collect materials pertaining to the histories of the University, the Milledgeville and Baldwin County areas, as well as surrounding counties. Feel free to contact us today!

Special Collections and Art Department team up to share local history By: Vanessa Whited Special Collections has partnered with Georgia College’s Art Department to visually illustrate university and local history. The exhibit, titled “Art by Num8ers and Threads,” is a series of two and three-dimensional works of art inspired by Special Collections resources. Students from Professor TeaYoun KimKassor’s Three-Dimensional Fundamental Design and Fiber Arts II courses created the mixed media pieces that are now on display at Special Collections. “This collaboration gives us an interesting opportunity to work with groups who don’t traditionally come in to Special Collections,” Archivist Joshua Kitchens said. “It gives students a chance to do something out of the norm.”

SC hosted a very successful opening reception for the exhibit, which will run until December. “It is really great to see what students are offering to the community,” Kim-Kassor said. “They are sharing the ideas and the voice of the community we live in.”

Milledgeville/Baldwin County Oral History Project

A generous grant from the Knight Fund for Milledgeville/Baldwin County has funded a new oral history project and Special Collections’ efforts to preserve local history By: Kate Pope Stories of war and memories of triumph and overcoming hardship are but a few of the experiences of the citizens of Milledgeville and Baldwin County. These individual accounts will be forgotten if not recorded for the future generations. Busy schedules and distractions often ensure that these memories are not recorded or the stories left untold.

Oral history interviews are conducted to document these accounts and people’s lives. Taken together, these interviews tell the greater story of an area or of a region. Oral histories are not often recorded due to lack of time or equipment and a recent grant has been funded to provide both of these necessities to the citizens of Georgia College & State University and the Milledgeville/Baldwin County community.

Milledgeville/Baldwin County Oral History Project A project to document the contemporary history of the area with a focus on veterans, women, and African-American history.

Please join us for a kick-off reception with guest speakers and an opportunity for interviews.

Date: Friday, September 8th Time: 5:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Location: Digital Bridges

Baldwin County residents, students, educators, and civic and religious groups who are interested in being interviewed or in volunteering please contact Special Collections at scinfo@gcsu.edu or (478) 445-0988 for more information.

The Knight Fund for Milledgeville/Baldwin County awarded a grant to support Georgia College Special Collections’ oral history project. The Milledgeville/Baldwin County Oral History Project‘s goal is to document the history of the area with a focus on veterans, women, and African-American history. Special Collection is thrilled to begin an initiative that has the opportunity to impact the community in such a large and positive way. The interviews recorded in this project will be transcribed and available in hard-copy form and online for the easiest researcher access possible. The goal of this effort is to not only record these histories but to make sure that citizens know about them and are able to use them effectively. This project provides the perfect opportunity for individuals, groups, and school classes to actively participate in documenting the history of the area. To participate, please contact Special Collections (478) 445-0988 or scinfo@gcsu.edu.

New exhibit: ‘VOTE’ By: Matt Cobb

In the midst of election season, Special Collections thought it was only fitting to prepare a new exhibit highlighting some of the political and election-related artifacts we have here in the archives. The new exhibit, entitled “VOTE,” features items from our Carl Vinson and Paul D. Coverdell collections, as well as other photographs and relevant artifacts. Come get a firsthand look at how elections have shaped our nation. “VOTE” is on display outside of Special Collections on the second floor of the Library and Instructional Technology Center.

SC and the Rotary Club of Milledgeville By: Kate Pope The Rotary Club of Milledgeville recently signed a repository agreement with Special Collections of Georgia College. This agreement will ensure the preservation and access of Rotary Club historical and contemporary materials. Special Collections is excited to take care of the materials of such an illustrious organization and we look forward to working with them to document the group’s history. The Rotary Club is donating the materials that they currently possess and they would also like to ask community members and past Rotarians for their assistance in accumulating any materials relevant to the history of the club. Please contact Rotarian Christa Kahea (478-445-0995) to donate items or for more information.

By: GC Communications Archive it, search it or pin it. Georgia College Special Collections’ new online and mobile app tour, Historic Georgia College Tour, allows users to help document the university’s history digitally. Historic Georgia College Tour features before and after photos, maps, virtual tours and brief descriptions about campus locations, telling the story of Georgia College as if walking through time. This tour navigates 19 historical locations on campus in a fun, interactive way, including mobile capabilities for smartphones It’s an ever-changing product where users can add information and pictures to make the tour truly their experience. The tour is offered through Special Collections’ website and mobile app Historypin, a project by Google that creates a virtual archive of photos, videos and content. Historypin also incorporates mapping program Google Earth, which Special Collections used to create the digital tour of campus. Traveling as far back as 1889 when Georgia College served as public women’s college Georgia Normal & Industrial College, the tour provides the history and development of campus buildings, centers, sites and halls. Familiar campus structures of the tour include Atkinson Hall, Old Governor’s Mansion, Russell Auditorium, Herty Hall and William Heard Kilpatrick Education Center. We encourage users to add pins directly to the tour map to document campus places or contact Special Collections to send historical photographs, information and ideas. The tour really allows users to take an active role in preserving our institution’s history and provides classes with another beneficial tool to study our changing architecture and landscape. Access the online tour by visiting library.gcsu.edu/sc and clicking on the Historypin social media icon.
