President’s Message By Steven Showers I hope everyone is having a great start to the winter season, it certainly feels like winter here in the central valley with lows in the upper twenties. The board of directors held their Strategic Planning Meeting this past November at Cypress Ridge Golf Course. The meeting is held every one to two Steven Showers 2017 GCSACC President years as a way for the board to assess what has been working and what changes we need to make to improve. One of the goals set during the meeting was to increase membership numbers as well as engage more members in the association. One of the ways we intend to achieve an increase in membership numbers is to get more Assistants and Equipment Technicians to join us as actual members of the association. For the January meeting, set for January 20, 2017 at Blacklake Golf Course, we would encourage superintendents to bring along your mechanic (Equipment Technician) to the meeting or just send them if you can’t make it. We have a special offer for those mechanics

who can attend, with your meeting cost of $70 you will get to attend the meeting and get a complimentary membership for 2017 to the Golf Course Superintendents Association of Central California (GCSACC). As for engaging more members to participate in meetings we will be sending out surveys to both those members who participate as well as those who do not in an effort to make our events more attractive to attend. Another goal is to increase outreach to University Turf Programs, 2-year colleges, certificate programs and high school students. This will help us to recruit not only quality assistants but also our everyday workforce. Details are being worked out for our spring meeting where we will be able to get into more detail with regards to the turf programs future at Cal Poly. The other focus for the board is financial, as it is with most organizations, and how we can keep effective on a very tight budget. This year there will be no dues increase, you should have already received your bill for 2017, please pay as soon as possible and not wait until Irene has to call and pester you to pay. We will also be looking at our sponsorship )

Winter Meeting Blacklake Golf Resort

Michael Scott, CGCS will be hosting the 2017 Winter Educational Meeting at Blacklake G.C. in Nipomo. We have selected January 20, 2017 which is a Friday for the event. This is a change from our regular day of the week. Located on the Nipomo Mesa in the heart of the Central Coast, Blacklake Golf Resort features 27 holes comprised of three distinct nine-hole layouts. Canyons: The Canyons course features undulating terrain with several elevated tee boxes overlooking the

fairways below. Oaks: The Oaks course has a more sheltered setting, with fairways that wind through a forest of coastal oak trees. The Oaks course is more of a “target golf” experience, and you can find yourself in the woods if you’re not careful. Lakes: The Lakes course is the most forgiving of our three courses, with wide fairways that make it the perfect proving ground for newer golfers. It even opens with a par 3 to start your round off on a confident note. But it’s also a long course, so you can’t call it a pushover, either. . For this meeting, set we are encouraging the superintendents to bring along the course mechanic or Equipment Technician to the meeting . If the superintendent can’t at-

tend just send them . We have a special offer for those mechanics who can attend, with your attendance at the meeting you will get a complimentary one year membership for 2017 to the Golf Course Superintendents Association of Central California (GCSACC). We are hoping that this will help our membership drive as well as engage our membership to become more active in the association. We are looking forward to seeing what Michael Scott, CGCS has in store for us, so plan on attending Friday, January 20th. Registrations are open and you can go online to make your reservation. From the Field Jeff Jensen, GCSAA Field Staff, Southwest Region As we close out 2016, I would like to thank all of the Central California members for their support of GCSAA and my position over the Jeff Jensen past year. You are a truly remarkable group of professionals committed to the betterment of golf. While we continue to face our share of challenges, we have the right people, resources and attitude to address them head on. As we ring in 2017, there are some changes and announcements with GCSAA that you should be aware of: GCSAA recently hired Michael Lee to serve as Manager of Government Affairs. Michael will work under Chava McKeel and oversee the Grassroots Ambassador Program. Michael previously worked as the State Director for U.S. Senator James Inhofe (chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works) in Oklahoma City, OK where he managed staff in the Senator’s state offices,

facilitated meetings/campaign events/fundraising efforts, monitored district politics and issues, served as the lead interface between the Senator and grassroots organizations in the state and worked with local, state and federal officials. Michael advised the Senator on priority issues such as water infrastructure and transportation. If you have any questions or would like more information on the Grassroots Ambassador Program (open to Class A, B and C members), please don’t hesitate to contact Michael at mlee@gcsaa.org EIFG recently announced that the 2017 Rounds 4 Research auction will take place April 1-9. Rounds 4 Research started in 2012 to generate resources to fund research and help ensure golf’s future. The program has raised $565,000 since its inception. Funds are generated by securing donated rounds of golf (defined as a foursome) from facilities and then made available to the public through a nationwide online auction at biddingforgood.com which has over 650,000 users in its database. Facilities can specify restrictions on the rounds (including

days/times, blackout dates) when making their donation. Eighty percent of the funds that are generated by the donated rounds will go back to the participating chapter for research projects, education and scholarships. The remaining twenty percent will cover administrative, technical and national marketing costs of the program. GCSAA is asking superintendents, PGA Professionals, club managers and owners to consider donating rounds to the auction. Donations can be made online at www.rounds4research.com and your donation will help ensure the long-term future of the game. Once again, thank you for a great 2016 and I look forward to working and playing some golf with all of you in 2017. Have a Happy New Year and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at jjensen@gcsaa.org and follow me on Twitter @GCSAA_SW for daily industry updates.
