President’s Message By Steven Showers Well the recent 100 plus degree days here in the valley certainly mean that summer has arrived, right on schedule and even a little early. June brings heat to the valley and also the Al Glaze Memorial Scholarship and Research Tournament, which was held at Visalia Country Club. The day was great even with the warmth of the valley. Everyone Steven Showers attending had a great time. The Airways Golf Course auction items we had for this 2016 GCSACC President years fundraiser were awesome. Those that bid got some very good deals for their courses. The chapter’s scholarship fund benefited the most as the proceeds from the auction go to scholarship recipients or into our research fund. Our Vice President Andy Cordova was not in attendance at the tournament, but when you see him congratulate him on his wedding, he and Sarah make a great pair and I wish them a lifetime of happiness together. Our chapter will host the annual Tri-Chapter event in August. I look forward to seeing many of our members there. I know it’s a hard time to leave the course but please try and make this great event. We look forward to visiting this course as we have not had the opportunity before now. In September we will visit Ridge Creek in Dinuba for the election meeting. As is the case every year we are looking for members to serve on the board of directors, if you have ever wondered what its like to serve on the board I would recommend “just do it”, it’s not much work and you will enjoy the experience. To be honest Irene and Kim do all of the heavy lifting, please consider joining us. This year we will, in addition to

electing the board of directors, be asking our membership to vote on by law changes. Some of these changes are mandated by the GCSAA, changing the Superintendent Member status back to Class B among some other small changes. We as the local chapter will also be asking the membership if we could move our annual meeting to January from the normal September meeting. Many of the past September meetings struggle for participants, mostly from aerification scheduling conflicts among other issues and we feel that the move to January will be beneficial. I’m sure most of you have seen the relatively new GCSAA ad campaign Thank a Superintendent. I think we as superintendents should take the time to thank a sponsor; we have a number of vendors who donate to our association on a regular basis. Without their support we couldn’t put on these fun golf tournaments or even hold meetings without raising dues prices. So take the time to thank a sponsor!!! I look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events and have a great summer.

Around the Green by Mike Cline

Congratulation to Andy and Sarah Cordova on their marriage. The wedding was held at Cypress Ridge. The valley heat didn’t stop the members and guests that attended the Al Glaze Scholarship & Research Tournament. Glenn Matthews, CGCS hosted a fantastic tournament and it was a great success for our chapter. The course looked terrific and we THANK Glenn, his staff, and the membership of Visalia C.C. for allowing us

the opportunity to hold our event at their course. With Fred Eckert’s formal retirement from BASF his replacement has been announced. Edward Medeiros joins BASF after having worked for CPS. We welcome Ed and look forward to him joining the chapter. Jon Christensen reports that he is installing a Champion Ultra Dwarf Bermuda Grass green at Sunnyside C.C. It will be the practice putting green nearest the pro shop and will be evaluated to see if it could be a replacement product for the greens on the entire course. Mike Swing, CGCS of Valley Oaks in Visalia announced his retirement and relocation to Bend Oregon. Best of Luck to Mike and his wife Freddie on this new adventure.

Terry Wisler, former superintendent at the Links @ Paso Robles has moved to Chalk Mountain G.C.. Gordon Vosti and Bayer Environmental are starting an EUP program on a new nematicide at Bakersfield C.C. and Sunnyside C.C. The new product is not yet registered in California but is sold under the name Nortica outside of the state. Construction on a new sister golf course to Monarch Dunes has begun according to Superintendent Tom Elliott, CGCS. The new course is designed by Tim Liddy and is being developed by the company presently building the planned community at the site. The new course is not part of Monarch Dunes Golf Club.
