Letter to the Community For more than 60 years, the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation has been a partner in charitable giving, improving the quality of life in our community … forever.
2012 at a Glance: Total Assets:
$123 million
Number of Funds:
646
The work of the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation is making connections— connections between donors, nonprofits, and those served by nonprofits. These connections create a broadening circle of benefits that improve the quality of life for all of us and provide a legacy of community strength for future generations. This year’s annual report focuses on instances where we have made these connections and, as a result, provided leadership and funding for important community projects. In 2012, 1,215 donors demonstrated their commitment by contributing $9.9 million, a 25% increase from 2011, to endowed and non-endowed funds held at the Community Foundation. Eighty-one new funds were established by individuals, families, businesses and nonprofit agencies, bringing the total number of funds at the Community Foundation to 646. The Community Foundation awarded $6 million in grants to more than 392 agencies in Linn County and beyond. Also in 2012, we were recognized as Outstanding Foundation by the International Association of Fundraising Professionals. We were nominated by the local Eastern Iowa AFP Chapter for the special role played by the Community Foundation in the aftermath of the flood of 2008. We acknowledge that the Community Foundation’s leadership role would not be possible without the extraordinary generosity and foresight of our donors – past and present. Your generosity is creating a legacy and building a strong future for our community.

The Ripple Effect In charitable activities, a “ripple effect can be observed in how one positive act can be disseminated and passed on with broadening impact. That is the essence of the Community Foundation: taking a single gift and through careful and thoughtful management, preserving its impact in an ever widening circle of good.

Pooled Investments The Investment Committee of the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation board works closely with staff and a professional investment consultant to offer a variety of investment options designed to meet a range of philanthropic goals and time horizons. Contributions made to the Community Foundation are pooled for investment purposes, allocating total returns to each component fund. These component funds represent a collection of interests of individual donors and agencies who have united to increase the effectiveness and to permit greater diversification of investments than would be possible for single funds. This provides for greater opportunities without increasing risk. As of December 31, 2012 the Community Foundation endowment pool investment returns were: 1-year return

Ways to Give Agency Endowment Funds are established by nonprofit agencies to provide permanent, annual support for the organizations. Partnering with the Community Foundation allows nonprofits to focus on carrying out their mission while knowing their fund is a part of a large investment pool being managed professionally.
Bequests and Beneficiary Designations may be a gift or portion of your estate to the Community Foundation. In some cases, you may qualify to receive a substantial reduction in federal gift and estate taxes.
Charitable Gift Annuities may be of cash or property to the Community Foundation. This will allow you to receive immediate tax benefits while ensuring that you or a loved one receives fixed quarterly or annual income payments for life. Charitable Remainder Trusts allow you to place cash or property in a trust that pays annual income to you (or another designated beneficiary) for life. After your death, the remainder of the trust transfers to the Community Foundation and is placed in a charitable fund you have chosen. You receive income tax benefits the year you establish this trust.
Corporate Donor-Advised Funds provide a convenient, flexible way for businesses to extend their commitment to the local community with charitable giving.
Designated Funds are permanently endowed funds that enable you to make a difference and leave a legacy forever. The nonprofits you choose receive annual gifts in your fund’s name. You may choose one or more organizations for permanent support.
Donor-Advised Funds offer ongoing involvement in the use of your gift. Working with our professional program staff, you recommend grants to support charitable groups or causes of your choice in Linn County or elsewhere in the U.S. or anywhere in the world. Your recommendations are submitted to our local board of directors for approval and the Community Foundation then distributes grant funds on your behalf. Field of Interest Funds focus on a particular charitable area that you choose. Once you determine this cause you want to support, our grant program staff will work with grant committees to identify grant recipients and make grants from your fund.
Unrestricted Funds allow you to address current and future community needs. As an unrestricted fund donor, you understand the dynamics of our changing community and world and know that there are issues yet to be determined. By working with the Community Foundation, grants will be awarded in your name or fund name to nonprofits that address community needs today, tomorrow and forever.

Memorial Gift Honors Mother With Lasting Legacy One doesn’t have to spend too much time in Robert “Bob” Downey’s cozy home in Marion to notice that “family” was at the very heart of everything Bob’s wife of 60 years, Joann E. Downey did throughout her life as wife, mother, friend and healer. “She grew up in a small, quiet family so it was important for her to have a big, loving home,” says Bob. “She was the center wheel of our family.”
“This fund gives us something. Our mother was a giver. It is our way of saying we miss her.”
Born in Edgewood, Iowa, in 1933, Joann married Bob just before her 18th birthday and by age 23 already had six of her soon to be eight children. Proud of her German/Austrian background and hereditary longevity (Joann’s mother, fondly referred to as “Grandma Olaf”, lived to be 100 years old), Joann Downey fully expected to live to see 100 years herself, says sons Kurt and David Downey.
Kurt Downey
When a local attorney suggested that the Downey family speak to the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation about setting up a fund to honor their mother’s memory, David and his brother Kurt took the lead. “Mom was the matriarch of 40-something people,” says David. “We would never want her to be forgotten.”
In the spirit of their mother’s quiet generosity, Bob, David and Kurt met with the Community Foundation to set up The Joann Elizabeth Downey Fund with the hope that it would be a way for the entire family to remember their mother each year.
“Until she passed, she was the picture of health…and beauty,” says David. “She was a person that was rarely sick and she took such good care of herself. Her illness came as such a shock to our family.”
“You don’t have to have a lot of money to leave a legacy for yourself or for a loved one, as we are doing,” says Kurt. “The Community Foundation gives you time.” Because the Downey family decided to give through the Community Foundation, they were also able to take advantage of Endow Iowa tax credits which allowed them to claim state income tax credits worth 25 percent of the amount of their gift. According to Kurt, “This fund gives us something. Our mother was a giver. It is our way of saying we miss her.”

Powerball Winners Share Their Luck
“It’s a wonderful way to give. We knew if we gave this way, our gift would continue to give forever.”
Giving back to community is nothing new to Kelly and Anne Mulford. Throughout his 36+ years working at the Quaker Oats Company, Kelly has contributed annually to the United Way of East Central Iowa (UWECI). Anne has participated in events to raise funds for causes like the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and the American Lung Association.
Kelly Mulford
As Kelly puts it, he and Anne can now “add a couple more zeros” to their donations in a way that goes much further.
The Mulfords’ financial advisor suggested that by giving through the Community Foundation, they could expand the generosity of their gift through endowed funds. In the process, the Mulfords also benefited from the Endow Iowa Tax Credit Program, which enables donors who establish endowed funds at qualified Iowa Community Foundations to claim state income tax credits worth 25 percent of the amount of their gift.
The Mulfords chose to give through the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation. First, they contributed $75,000 to an endowed fund for the United Way of East Central Iowa. Each year, this donation will provide UWECI with $3,000 to $4,000.
“The opportunity to work with the Community Foundation is going to help people here in Cedar Rapids,” Kelly explains. “It’s a wonderful way to give. We knew if we gave this way, our gift would continue to give forever.”
“I knew I wanted to continue giving to United Way,” says Kelly. “I know the money is going to the right place and it’s important to give back to the community.”
Kelly and Anne shake their heads at their good fortune, which has blessed them ever since they met on a memorable date: 1/1/11. They married on St. Patrick’s Day (March 17, 2012) and Kelly won the Powerball jackpot on June 13, 2012 – the fourth anniversary of the 2008 Flood.
But the Mulfords generosity has taken on new meaning since June 2012, when Kelly won part of a $241 million Powerball jackpot. He was one of the Quaker “Shipping 20” who jointly won the jackpot; each ticketholder received about $5.6 million.
“We also wanted to keep it local,” added Anne. The Marion couple also established another endowed, designated fund for the Clothe-a-Child Program. This local effort was founded in 2009 to provide new clothing to children in need. Kelly has been part of their annual outreach in the past through the Marion Masons Lodge #6.
Kelly retired from Quaker Oats this spring. He and Anne paid off their home mortgage and will soon move to Minnesota, where they are building a new home on Anne’s five-acre farm near Faribault. They are happy to know that they were able to turn part of their new-found wealth into ongoing gifts of support for those in need, thanks to the Community Foundation.

This spring, they moved their downtown firm into a larger space around the corner on Second Ave. Their reputation is solid; they have won numerous design and technology awards. The Corridor Business Journal has named Informatics as Best “With a Prairie Website Developer for eight Fund, it’s possible years in a row (2006-2013).
John, who serves as Informatics Partner and Vice President for Development, serves on the Community Foundation’s board. When he learned about Prairie Funds, he suggested starting one for Informatics.

“One of our goals was to be able to give back to the community, while being wise in how we spend our dollars,” John says. “With the options that the Prairie Fund offers for philanthropy and growth of funds, it provides a multiplier effect.”
John Osako
It’s a strategic investment in the community and its future. That’s a commitment important to all three Osakos, who are all involved in the Cedar Rapids community.
That approach – building gradually, looking toward the future – is also integral to the way the Osakos give back to their community. This year, Informatics became the first area business to establish a Prairie Fund, a fund type offered by the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation to help individuals and businesses start small in philanthropy, gradually growing to respond to community needs.
“Being involved and giving back are key to making our community a better place to live,” says Maureen. “This is a true win-win for us and the community we’re a part of.” Because these values are essential, starting a Prairie Fund felt right to the Osakos. Working with the Community Foundation made it that much better.

Kirkwood Foundation Taps Into Endow Iowa In the fall of 2011, when the Kirkwood Foundation launched a major campaign to increase scholarship opportunities at the Community College, they wanted to be sure to maximize giving opportunities for their donors. “We always focus on what works best for the donor—what makes their giving easy and has the maximum impact,” says Kathy L. Hall, CFRE, Vice President of Development for Kirkwood “It’s a win-win Community College and situation for the Executive Director of the Kirkwood Foundation. “We want to give donor and the every advantage to our donors.”

their behalf that they decided not to accept on their own. “The nature of the Community Foundation lends itself to accepting more complicated gifts, especially those benefiting multiple charitable organizations.”
In the last few years, Hall says that the Kirkwood Foundation has experienced a true partnership with the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation that offered those advantages.
Kirkwood’s scholarship campaign was a rousing success. In addition to contributions to the Kirkwood Foundation fund at the Community Foundation, six additional funds were created at the Community Foundation by donors with designated support for scholarships at Kirkwood. “It’s a no brainer,” says Hall of partnering with the Community Foundation. “It’s a win-win situation for the donor and the nonprofit—in this case Kirkwood—to use this vehicle. The benefit to everyone is unmistakable.”
Hall says Kirkwood Foundation donors were especially drawn to the opportunity to receive Endow Iowa tax credits for their campaign gift. Donors also have multiple interests she says. “This makes charitable giving through the Community Foundation a onestop-shop. They are able to support the Kirkwood Foundation and other organizations at the same time.”
Community Foundation staff could not agree more. “The partnership between the Community Foundation and the Kirkwood Foundation has been a homerun,” says Amy Johnson, Vice President of Development for the Community Foundation. “Our mutual donors have helped provide needed student scholarships at Kirkwood, while receiving significant tax incentives through the Endow Iowa tax program. The result is that even more deserving students will receive a Kirkwood education in the future.”
Kirkwood Community College first established a fund at the Community Foundation to benefit the Kirkwood Foundation back in 2009. “We wanted to get people used to giving to the Kirkwood Foundation through the Community Foundation,” says Hall. “Kirkwood has a $27 million endowment of its own and a long history of community support, but we still see great benefits to working with the Community Foundation. During the recent campaign, Ms. Hall says there was one instance when the Community Foundation was able to accept a gift on

Community Foundation Brings Value to Advisor’s Clients J. Scott Bogguss first became aware of the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation after he started practicing law in the early ’70s. However, it wasn’t until the early ’90s that clients began to ask about the Community Foundation more regularly. Bogguss soon noticed that several clients and fellow attorneys for whom he had great respect, like John Smith, Jim Bradley and Gary Streit, were volunteering their time on the Community Foundation’s board of directors.
“A lot of things came along which were unforeseeable – natural disaster, economic downturn, loss of local employers,” explains Bogguss. “All of these challenges occurred from June 2008 through the end of that year. The Community Foundation was and is one of the most nimble and knowledgeable organizations that can help donors distribute funds.” The Community Foundation’s Flood Fund made its last grant award in 2012.
His specialty as a tax, estate and general business lawyer – and his volunteer service as Chair of the St. Luke’s Health Care Foundation board – prepared Bogguss for his own role at the Community Foundation. Scott was the Community Foundation’s board chairman in 2008. His leadership skills were intensely “A key benefit is put to the test during the city’s greatest natural disaster – the that donors don’t June 2008 flood. Three days after the flood crest, under Bogguss’ leadership, the Community Foundation had organized the Flood Fund and were making small grants to dozens of nonprofits that had been displaced.
One of the key benefits of investing with the Community Foundation, says Bogguss, is that donors don’t have to worry about vetting individual organizations themselves. The Community Foundation has the “horses and the resources,” he says. “The organization has the experience on both the board and staff level to be an efficient administrator of donor funds.”
have to worry about vetting individual organizations themselves. The Community Foundation has that community intelligence.”
In addition to a strong organizational infrastructure and sound investment management, the Community Foundation has what Bogguss calls “community intelligence:” a broad and deep knowledge of community needs, as well as a strong commitment to donor constituents and local nonprofits. “Our job as advisors isn’t to ‘sell’ one charitable organization over another,” he explains. “But if we have a client that is undecided or ambivalent, the Community Foundation offers a broad range of purposes and techniques that can be pursued like donor-advised funds, endowments, charitable trust, designated gifts and nonprofit support.”
“The Community Foundation’s structure and long-standing history as a community partner J. Scott Bogguss made it a perfect vehicle to quickly assist the sheer number of donors wanting to contribute to help flooded organizations and people in need,” Bogguss says. “Many of the donors did not have the time to get to know some of the individual nonprofits directly and they were quickly able to understand that the Community Foundation already had this knowledge.”

Grant Supports Mt. Zion Church Wellness Outreach
Grant: Program Grant Fund Fund Purpose: Support programmatic innovation and sustainability Grant Award: $6,780
Caring for congregation members’ spiritual health is a core value of any church. But Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church of Cedar Rapids has taken that to a new level by establishing a wellness program that embraces both body and soul - literally. Mt. Zion has adopted the “Body and Soul” wellness program developed for African American churches by the National Cancer Institute, empowering its multi-ethnic church members to live healthier, more active lives and eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. This is especially vital because African Americans are at greater risk for developing serious chronic diseases such as cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and stroke.
Parishioners’ spiritual needs are the main priority at Mt. Zion, Pastor Damian Epps says, “but it’s also important to talk about topics related to a healthy body as well as a healthy soul.”
In 2008, congregation members Paulette Clark and Pearlie Griggs attended a health fair hosted by the Iowa Cancer Consortium to learn more about “Body and Soul.” They worked to implement the program at Mt. Zion to integrate physical and spiritual health, providing wellness activities for church members such as healthy cooking demonstrations, health screenings, and exercise and fitness classes. The church has also adopted healthy meal policies for church events, replacing doughnuts and fried foods with more healthy choices.
Last fall, Mt. Zion sought funding from the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation to expand on existing wellness initiatives. A $6,780 Community Foundation grant enabled Mt. Zion to buy fitness equipment for weekly fitness classes held at the church, and to buy healthy fruits and vegetables to be used at healthy cooking demonstrations and tasting events. Since receiving the grant, Clark notes, “We have seen steady growth in ‘Body and Soul’ activities. Everybody gets involved – kids and adults – especially in fitness classes.” Now there are as many as 50 kids involved in classes on fitness, nutrition and cooking. Exercise classes are a key component and now draw participants ranging in age from their teens to their 80s. The program’s success has led to opening fitness classes to the community, and efforts are underway to work with other churches to establish similar wellness programs. As Clark explains, “We want our church to be an example for other churches.”

Medical Shuttle Service Continues
Grant: President’s Fund Fund Purpose: Address emergencies, sector development, and emerging opportunities. Grant Award: $5,000
Thanks to a grant from the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation’s President’s Fund, transportation for Linn County residents with medical appointments in Iowa City will continue. The $5,000 grant ensures service by the Corridor Medical Shuttle for Linn County residents with medical appointments at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and the Veterans Affairs Hospital. The University announced that, due to budget constraints, it would discontinue its transportation service effective December 31, 2012. The shuttle has enabled Linn County veterans, IowaCare patients (those uninsured who don’t qualify for Medicaid or Medicare) and others without transportation to get to medical appointments. As word spread last fall of the service ending, the Transportation Advisory Group of Cedar Rapids, made up of Linn County LIFTS, Neighborhood Transportation Service (NTS), other local transportation providers and nonprofits, began searching for funds.
“This was happening too fast for us to apply through a regular grant application review process,” Bergen says. “The President’s Fund worked because they responded quickly to our request. It really helped us.” It also strengthened the group’s position in seeking additional funding through the Iowa Department of Transportation, Bergen adds. The Community Foundation grant covers 20 percent of the shuttle cost, with IDOT picking up the additional 80 percent, for operations through 2013.
“We decided to put our heads together to see what we could find as possible resources,” explains Terry Bergen, Mobility Manager for the Transportation Advisory Group. They needed to find funding immediately. Bergen was aware of the Community Foundation President’s Fund. Because it’s available for emergency, immediate needs, the fund was the Group’s best hope.
Future funding will be reviewed later this year. The new shuttle service is wheelchair accessible and operates twice a week, providing round-trip service from Cedar Rapids to the UI and VA hospitals in Iowa City. Veterans ride for free. IowaCare patients only pay $1 each way and others pay $8 each way. “It seems to be going pretty well,” Bergen says, with about five riders each day. Call it making the best of a bad situation, which fits perfectly with one of Bergen’s favorite sayings: “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”

Junior League Helps Teens Aging Out of Foster Care
Grant: Program Grant Fund Fund Purpose: Support programmatic innovation and sustainability Grant Award: $5,000
Twice a month, League members cook a healthy dinner for 30 hungry young adults, all AMP participants, at the Four Oaks Bridge. “When those teens come walking down the hall and they smell the home cooked meal and they hear laughing as we all gather in the kitchen to cook, they get that experience of coming home,” says Roberts. “For many of them, it is the closest sense they get of what ‘coming home’ feels like.”
Since its establishment as the Junior League of Cedar Rapids (JLCR) in 1934, JLCR members have been behind impactful community projects such as the Waypoint Madge Phillips Center, Cedar Rapids Science Center and Playtime Poppy. In 2010, the organization began researching a new cause to throw their weight behind. After hosting an informational open house, doing hours of research and interviewing countless community leaders, it became very clear where JLCR’s support – of time, talent and treasure – could be wisely invested. Of the approximately 900 children in foster care in the Cedar Rapids area, roughly 40% are teens. Every year, a number of these teens turn 18, leave high school, and find themselves without the emotional and financial support to live as independent young adults. It was the “gap of care” that the Junior League of Cedar Rapids membership stepped in to fill with the launch of the “Bridging the G.A.P” Project in fall of 2011. “We wanted to bring to light a group of teens that would have otherwise been cut off from the system,” explains Kristin Roberts, JLCR’s 2012-2013 President. “This is a group that has been generally underserved.”
Another key component of Bridging the G.A.P. project is the “suitcase program”. Since November 2012, JLCR has provided over 100 suitcases full of supplies to young adults who are aging out of the foster care system.
The three “G.A.P.” project tracks: Guide, Advocate and Provide, came with specific tactics, goals and measurements of success. For example, with the Guide track, JLCR and Foundation 2 connected with the Partnership of Iowa Foster Care Youth Council’s Achieving Maximum Potential (“AMP”) group to provide healthy meals and fellowship to AMP participants.
To financially support their new project, JLCR applied for and received a grant through the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation in 2012. This grant made up $5,000 of the project’s total budget of roughly $6,600. “We wouldn’t have been able to do what we did without the Community Foundation,” says Maria Sanchez-Masi, JLCR’s President-Elect. And thanks to the Community Foundation’s continued support in 2013, the group was able to double their budget and double the number of kids that they are helping.

staff in-office. That was part of the BBBS Strategic Technology System Design and Acquisition project to provide a new server, computer and hardware upgrades critical to supporting program growth.
Keeping up with technology is vital for any business, not only for easier management but better security and communications. But for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cedar Rapids & East Central Iowa (BBBS), which mentors at-risk youth in Benton, Jones and Linn counties, the kind of technology upgrade needed had reached the point of emergency. Outdated computers and operating systems were volatile, crashing and failing to save documents, blocking communications with other agencies and clients.
The agency badly needed a current and consistent version of Windows to enable file-sharing, grant writing, and access to webbased database systems and marketing materials offered by BBBS of America. “We couldn’t do any of this without getting efficient computers and a server on-site, up and operating,” Beardsworth notes. “If your technology isn’t current, you lack efficiencies. It’s been frustrating. Our staff’s focus needs to be on the great work we do, not dealing with computer issues.”
For BBBS, a $6,000 grant from the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation last year meant the difference between surviving and thriving, explains Kathy Beardsworth, BBBS Fund Development & Marketing Director. In January, the Community Foundation’s Organizational Development Fund grant provided seven new laptops for staff with responsibilities partially off-site and 13 desktops for
“Each step forward in our upgrades improved operations drastically,” Beardsworth says. “Today, staff members are thrilled to turn on their computers to easily connect with clients and others,” she adds. “It gives us more flexibility and we’re processing information faster and more consistently across the agency. This grant, coupled with a gift from a faithful donor, has allowed us to move into the 21st century.”
The Community Foundation knew that the local BBBS agency warranted investment and support. In 2012, the agency won the national organization’s highest honor of being named both Small Market Agency and Board of the Year. It was also one of 13 of the national organization’s 355 affiliates recognized as “Gold Standard” for their quality mentoring services to children.

Nature Conservancy Builds Awareness
Grant: Program Grant Fund and Competitive Donor-Advised Funds Fund Purpose: Support programmatic innovation and sustainability Grant Award: $40,900
The Nature Conservancy, a national organization widely recognized for its conservation work all over the world, has been working in lower parts of the Cedar River watershed—Iowa’s most biodiverse habitat—for the past 20 years. In the last few years, however, efforts have dramatically increased. “After the flood of 2008, we realized we needed to be working on a larger scale,” says Jan Glendening, State Director for The Nature Conservancy in Iowa. The organization expanded its project to address the entire Cedar River Basin. In the last year in particular, The Nature Conservancy’s biggest push has been helping others—communities, individuals, businesses and farmers alike—understand the importance of green infrastructure, such as wetlands and flood plains, in helping to alleviate the impact of flooding. “It’s not just gray infrastructure like dams and levees,” says Ms. Glendening. “Wetlands help keep water in the landscape. Nature is incredible and can protect us.”
While the project is a new and evolving one for The Nature Conservancy, all those involved are extremely excited about the prospects. The program is building momentum thanks to partnerships being formed—including with the Army Corps for Engineers, the Department of Natural Resources, the City of Cedar Rapids, and many others—and a staff member is being hired to focus efforts on the entire Cedar River basin. The project, which has been designated a national risk reduction pilot project for The Nature Conservancy, provides a proactive, science-based and non-confrontational approach to address the actual causes of flooding and produce lasting solutions to the problem.
With grant support in 2012 from the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation’s Program Fund, as well as grants from four Community Foundation Donor-Advised Funds, The Nature Conservancy launched a program to create an inclusive flood management plan for the Cedar River watershed. In the last year they’ve worked to restore 1,700 acres of wetland north of Cedar Rapids and they hope to restore additional acres in years to come. “We’re getting those on-the-ground results,” Ms. Glendening says. “Grants from the Community Foundation are allowing us to do that. We want to see a sustainable, healthy, resilient Eastern Iowa landscape and the Community Foundation is a true partner with us on this project.”
“This is exciting because they are building a coalition,” says Elizabeth Cwik, Program Officer at the Community Foundation. “This grant project looks at the broader picture after the flood, the whole system, and recognizes how we live within our watershed.”

New in 2012: Agency Endowment Challenge Grant
Four Oaks
In the first round of grant funding, the Community Foundation selected three organizations including Kids First, Four Oaks and Discovery Living. Each received an endowment challenge grant of up to $25,000. The grant is a 3 to 1 match, which means the organization must raise $75,000 to fully draw down the $25,000 match. The funds will go to an endowment fund held at the Community Foundation.
In 2012, the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation awarded its first Endowment Challenge Grants, a new funding opportunity for nonprofits that provides up to $25,000 in matching funds to a nonprofit organization’s endowment. The Endowment Challenge Grant is an investment in the future of an organization and was developed to assist nonprofits in their efforts to create sustainable funding models. Endowments can provide organizations with general operating support, provide stability during cyclical variances in income, and provide financial support for areas of high importance to the organization.

Strengthening Nonprofits
Nonprofit Network Strengthens Nonprofit Organizations and Professionals and board members. We collaborate with partner organizations to provide access to workshops, presentations and training series that cover a broad variety of topics of nonprofit interest to build the capacity of the sector.
Since 2005, the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation has made a commitment to supporting and strengthening nonprofit organizations and professionals in our community. For several years, the Linn County Nonprofit Resource Center served this function. In 2012, after much strategic reflection on the work on the Nonprofit Resource Center, the Community Foundation relaunched nonprofit capacity building efforts in a new program called the Nonprofit Network. The Nonprofit Network is a refocused point of connection for local nonprofit organizations and professionals, concentrating on four areas: peer engagement, learning opportunities, information and mentors.
The Nonprofit Mentor Network is being launched to match experienced professional volunteers as consultants in capacity building projects at local nonprofit organizations. Mentor Network volunteers are senior-level leaders from a range of professional backgrounds. They have a depth of experience, a commitment to service to the nonprofit sector, and a willingness to engage in continual learning. In 2013, Mentor Network services will include organizational assessment and review, board assessment and development and executive coaching and mentoring. We are pleased to be a member of Executive Service Corps—United States.
The Nonprofit Information Network—in partnership with the Cedar Rapids Public Library—provides access to relevant best practice information on a wide variety of topics of nonprofit interest, especially through online resources, to be the go-to source of information for local nonprofit organizations and professionals.
The Nonprofit Network is guided by a group of advisory committee members representing a great cross section of the local nonprofit sector. For more information about the Nonprofit Network visit, our website at www.gcrcf.org.
Through the Nonprofit Peer Network, we seek to strengthen nonprofit organizations by providing connections for nonprofit professionals to their peers working in similar positions at other organizations. A variety of groups meet on a monthly basis for support, idea sharing and networking. Working with area professional development and educational organizations, the Nonprofit Learning Network seeks to provide opportunities for ongoing learning for nonprofit professionals

Impact of Grant Making in 2012 Grants by Type of Fund
The Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation was pleased to award $6 million in grants in 2012. The Community Foundation maximizes donor opportunities through a wide variety of charitable funds.
Donor-Advised Designated
In 2012, most grants came from donor-advised funds and designated funds. Donor-advised funds allow donors to have ongoing involvement in selecting grant recipients. Designated funds are created by donors through a life gift or bequest. The donor selects one or more organizations to benefit at the time the fund is established to receive an ongoing annual distribution from the fund. The discretionary fund helps the Community Foundation address the ever-changing community landscape. Donors who make gifts to the discretionary fund entrust the Community Foundation staff and volunteers to carefully analyze current community needs and opportunities and make grants that will maximize the impact of their gifts.

Leadership to support a vibrant community
Outstanding Foundation of 2012 Recognition The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) named the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation the Outstanding Foundation of 2012 for our work in responding to the Flood of 2008 while continuing our support of charitable organizations in the area. The award honors a foundation that demonstrates outstanding commitment through financial support and through encouragement and motivation of others to take leadership roles in philanthropy and national, international and/or community involvement. Les Garner and the Community Foundation staff received the honor on March 31, 2012, at a special Celebration of Philanthropy ceremony during AFP’s 49th International Conference on Fundraising in Vancouver, the largest gathering of fundraisers in the world.
Community Development Grant Program Facilitates Collaboration on Innovative Projects The Community Development Grant Program was established in July 2011 and is jointly funded by the City of Cedar Rapids, Linn County and the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation. The initiative convenes agencies to facilitate collaboration on large projects, provide project management and lead or assist grant efforts including research, writing and management. Since its inception, the program has submitted 18 grant requests, been successful in facilitating $6 million in grant funding and has convened over 100 agencies with different interests to collaboratively develop cohesive funding requests and innovative projects.

Neighborhoods Rebuilt to Support Children and Families • We supported two youth programs in Time Check – a Salvation Army summer program and a year-round program run by Olivet Neighborhood Mission in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club.
Over the past five years, the Community Foundation directed a significant amount of grant funding to rebuilding neighborhoods following the Flood of 2008, through grants to Block by Block, local neighborhood associations, youth programs and a variety of other disaster recovery efforts. At their best, safe neighborhoods provide nurturing environments of stable relationships to support children and families. Because of this recent investment, in 2012 the Community Foundation formally articulated Children, Families and Neighborhoods as a community leadership priority. During the year, Foundation staff met with over 20 local neighborhood and community leaders to learn about their neighborhoods, and researched how other communities support strong neighborhoods.
• We funded the programming offered by the Oakhill Jackson Neighborhood Association to build relationships and provide connections for community members. • We helped Boys and Girls Club expand programming in the Mound View Neighborhood, with the move to the former Polk School. This allowed for extended hours and nurturing nonprofit partnerships to enhance programs and services. We applaud our community and nonprofit leaders who continue to find ways to build relationships, create and maintain safe environments and support healthy youth development, and we look forward to future opportunities to support these efforts.
In 2012, we have made a concerted effort to support neighborhood-based work in the core neighborhoods of Cedar Rapids, as illustrated in the following examples: • Through our Community Grant Development Program, we supported Four Oaks’ successful application to the United States Department of Human Services for the Total Child Wellington Heights Program, and continue to participate in the implementation committee. • We funded Habitat for Humanity’s “A Brush With Kindness” program to help homeowners in Wellington Heights fix the exteriors of their homes.

The REACT Center, Rockwell Educational Access to Computer Technology, is a nonprofit organization funded by the Rockwell Collins Foundation and managed by the Community Foundation. The REACT Center provides refurbished computers and computer learning experiences to area schools and area nonprofits that work with youth and the community. For more information on REACT, including how to make a computer and/ or peripheral equipment donation or to request donated equipment, contact Barbara Klawiter, at 319.393.9632 or baklawi5@rockwellcollins.com.
