Community Education–Welcome How to use this (Lifelong Learning Guide) This guide is arranged in sections, by category. In many cases classes/workshops that apply to several categories are crosslisted in each relevant section. Each section/category corresponds with a color: Personal Enrichment, pgs. 8-21. This section includes workshops and classes in areas such as Art, Dance, Computers and others that people take primarily for enjoyment and self-development. In many cases these classes serve other purposes as well, but they are primarily for self-enrichment. Workforce Development, pgs. 22-25. This section is made up of classes and workshops designed primarily for working people who are looking to enhance their on-the-job skills or to gain access to a new field or a new aspect of their current field. Health Care, pgs. 26-29. This section is made up of classes and workshops designed for the very industry-specific needs of aspiring and current health care professionals. Many classes are approved for mandatory continuing educational requirements, while others provide pre-licensure or pre-certification preparation for those looking to enter a health care field. Distance Education, pgs. 30-33. Courses in this section are all delivered via the internet, although some include textbooks and other materials. Most are asynchronous, that is you can do the work at any time. A few are synchronous, which means that you have to “attend” your online session “live” at a set time. All require an internet connection. Blended Classes, pgs. 34-35. These classes and workshops are offered in collaboration with GCC academic departments and combine credit-free students from the community in the same classroom learning experience with GCC for-credit students. Pioneer Valley Institute, pgs. 36-37. PVI programs highlight a variety of regional topics. They are usually single sessions, and are held at a variety of locations throughout the Pioneer Valley. All programs are open to the public at a modest cost. Senior Symposia, pgs. 38-39. These symposia are offered for those fifty years of age and older on a variety of topics, usually in single sessions, and are held exclusively at the GCC Downtown Center, 270 Main Street. All symposia are $10/session. Online registration is not available for these symposia.

We believe that our two-part mission of personal enrichment and workforce development, along with the sheer number of people we serve each year (nearly 2500), make Community Education at GCC an integral part of this community. We’re confident that if you take some time to look over this Lifelong Learning Guide and our website (www.gcc.mass.edu/shopcreditfree/) you’ll see that it can serve as just that—a guide to your own lifelong learning. Relief carving has a rich history that spans more than 20,000 years, from prehistoric cave dwellers to modern day sculptors. Making one is a process of translating a 2-dimensional image into the illusion of 3dimensions. From our own designs, we will translate 2-dimensional drawings into 3-dimensional relief carvings through understanding such concepts as layering forms to convey space and foreshortening as it relates to relief sculpture. Students will pay an additional $20-50 for materials (stone). Tools will be provided (loaners).

Instructor: Charles Marchant For those who have or would like to have a hand in the upkeep of their local cemeteries. Assess the condition of a gravestone and several methods for recording inscriptions and epitaphs. Address materials and methods for cleaning gravestones (you’ll be encouraged to actually clean a stone and should expect to get wet), resetting leaning stones, preparing surfaces for and applying adhesive material, and bracing the repaired stone (weather permitting). Dress for work, and bring cotton gloves, sunscreen, insect repellent, and sturdy shoes, as well as your own beverage. A $2 materials fee is payable directly to the instructor on the day of the workshop.

Instructor: Charles Marchant In this workshop participants will experience how to look at a cemetery as an outdoor museum. Examples of symbolism, historical context, design, and materials used in monument construction will be shown. Students will be asked to practice their creative writing using the information provided on a gravestone as an example. Explanations of the positives and negatives of field trips will be discussed. There will be practice in documentation and an explanation of basic photography as it pertains to gravestones. Part of the program will consist of demonstration called "What to Look For in a Cemetery Walk."

As more people look to save money on heating fuel or yardwork, a chainsaw can be a very good investment. A powerful tool that is as practical as it is dangerous, it requires a level of knowledge and experience to operate one safely and efficiently. This class is designed for people who are new to using a chainsaw, or for people who have recognized that they may have developed some bad habits over the years and would like to get a little more training before their luck runs out. We will go over the parts of the saw in depth, as well as maintenance, (including hand sharpening) and the importance of safety equipment. We will go over the basic theories of safe and effective felling and bucking, with an emphasis on recognizing the limits of your own abilities, so as to avoid dangerous situations. If you have a saw, bring it for inspection and maintenance. Please bring work gloves as well.

Instructor: Jeff Young Students registering for this course can be licensed as an apprenticed plumber before or after 9/1/2008. Those licensed prior to 9/1/2008 will be able to complete there 300 hour requirement during this time. This program is certified as providing the 550-hour classroom phase required by the Commonwealth. Each student must attend 110 hours per tier. This course is scheduled to meet 81 hours per semester, of which each student must attend at least 55 hrs (per semester) to meet the State standards. Students must purchase BOTH the current Massachusetts Plumbing Code Book and NFPA 54 Gasfitters Code Book (not NFPA 58). Books are available at www.sec.state.ma.us. These books are required. Join geologist Richard Little and naturalist Nancy Goodman for an exploration on 2 fronts at the southern end of Mt Tom. This site’s geology changes from bottom to top. We start at Rt 141 (sedimentary sandstone, acidic soils) and as we climb we encounter basalt talus slopes. At the summit the rocks are solid basalt and plant life is quite different. This is a steep hike so wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring a lunch, rain gear in case and plenty of water!

Dr Ken Feder has taught in the Dept of Anthropology at Central Connecticut State University since 1977. Archaeological research is like detective work. Instead of attempting to reconstruct the scene of a crime, researchers investigate the scene of a life. How do archeologists apply this forensic approach when researching the origins of agriculture, the development of the first cities, the earliest human settlement of the New World, and the identity of those who left behind the stone chambers, carved stones, or stone circles that dot the New England landscape? In this presentation, Felder shares the reasoning employed by archaeologists—and the convergence of evidence recovered—to answer that very question.

In the winter of 1912, thousands of textile workers took to the streets of Lawrence, Massachusetts, to demand better wages and working conditions for the women, children, and men who labored there. This performance piece celebrates the 100th anniversary of that event, now known as the Bread & Roses Strike. Combining historical narrative, power point images, and songs, Karen Brandow and Charlie King bring the strike alive while presenting a faithful historical account of a landmark event in American labor history. After a group discussion, the presentation may conclude with songs addressing contemporary issues in light of the Lawrence strike. Charlie King and Karen Brandow, nationally-touring musical storytellers from Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, have performed in support of numerous groups working for peace, human rights, and the environment. They are members of Local 1000 of the American Federation of Musicians. Charlie has Masters Degrees in Public Health and in Religious Studies, and Karen has a Doctorate in Education.
The Magical World of Ballet in Imperial and Soviet Russia Thursday, October 4
Presenter: Stanley J. Rabinowitz Akim Volynsky’s Ballet’s Magic Kingdom, translated from the Russian for the first time and edited by Stanley Rabinowitz, offers a remarkable glimpse into the world of ballet. Volynsky (1861-1926) was the greatest ballet authority of his time. The critically acclaimed book spans the influential Imperial and Soviet eras of Russian ballet. It offers vivid, eyewitness accounts of historic performances by such dance luminaries as Anna Pavlova, Mikhail Fokine, Tamara Karsavina, and George Balanchine, as well as insights into their careers and personalities. As a Russian scholar with a deep understanding of the culture, Rabinowitz will set Volynsky’s colorful stories in their political, artistic, and intellectual context. Stanley J. Rabinowitz has been teaching for 39 years at Amherst College, where he is Henry Steele Commager Professor, Professor of Russian, and Director of the Amherst Center for Russian Culture.

Deep party polarization has gripped the United States in recent years and kept Congress mired in deadlock. Howard Gold traces the causes of this polarization, from events during the Reagan and Clinton years to more recent developments, including the rise of the Tea Party. The sharp political divide between the Democratic and Republican parties deeply affects the American electorate. Gold will analyze the effects of this divide on the American democratic system, including its potential to shape the outcome of the upcoming presidential election. Howard Gold, Professor of Government at Smith College and a native of Montreal, has been studying, writing, and teaching about American public opinion, partisanship, and voting behavior for many years. He has published articles in American Politics Quarterly and Social Science Journal. His most recent book, Parties, Polarization and Democracy in the United States, co-authored with Donald Baumer, was published in 2010.
Cuba, only ninety miles from the Florida coast, has been mystery to generations of Americans unfamiliar with day-to-day life of Cubans under Communism. Home to 11 million people, this island is the most populous in the Caribbean. It is a rich and diverse nation known for its distinctive music and art. Since information has been largely controlled by the Castro brothers, Cubans know little about the rest of the world. However, the island is on the verge of a new direction, including a possible renewed relationship with the United States. Beth Reynolds has been a visual storyteller and photo educator for over twenty years. Beginning her career as a newspaper photographer, she went on to receive grants for numerous humanitarian projects and as a journalist has traveled frequently to Cuba, discovering a culture she had barely known as a Floridian. Most recently, she has written on the resurgence of the Jewish faith in Cuba.

What do you think of when you hear the name Frank Lloyd Wright? You would probably answer “Falling Water” or “The Guggenheim Museum‚“ two icons of twentieth-century modernism. However, it was actually Wright’s early work in and around Chicago at the turn of the century that established his genius in a career that spanned almost 70 years, from about 1890 to 1958. Architectural historian Marc Belanger will offer a visual journey highlighting a selection of masterworks from the first decade of the twentieth century, when Wright set out to create nothing less than a “new American architecture.” Marc Belanger is an independent architectural historian and serves as the Director of Marketing at Historic Deerfield Museum. A lifelong Wright “fanatic,” he earned his MFA in Architectural History from the Savannah College of Art & Design.
In the 1930s, to provide water for the city of Boston, the state flooded the towns of Dana, Enfield, Greenwich, and Prescott, creating the Quabbin Reservoir. The project destroyed homes, factories and farms, schools and places of worship, roads and railroads. Families were forced to relocate, and the dead were re-buried. After visiting the reburial site at Quabbin Park Cemetery, playwright Dorothy Johnson decided to give voice to those whose stones cannot speak. In her Swift River Anthology, she creates entirely imagined poetic sketches of those buried there: farmers, schoolteachers, soldiers, innkeepers, carpenters, athletes, musicians, mothers and children. In this dramatic reading, experienced actors bring these fictitious characters to life, sharing their losses, joys, and sorrows. The readings are enhanced by historic photos of the lost towns, contemporary views of the Quabbin, and a soundtrack of original music by William Jordan. Dorothy Johnson, whose parents had lived in Enfield, grew up hearing stories of the four lost towns. A New Salem resident, she has written, directed, and produced community musical theater there for twentyfive years.

“And We Shall All Be Starved”: King Philip’s War, 1675-76 Thursday, November 15
Presenter: Neal Salisbury King Philip’s War, a brutal conflict, ruptured the cooperative arrangements that had previously been achieved between Natives and English. They had lived alongside one another for a half a century, interacting as military and diplomatic allies in transactions ranging from casual neighborly exchanges to the highly structured fur trade. They had worked, socialized, attended school and church, and even lived together. However, once at war, acquaintances often encountered one another on opposite sides as combatants or as captives. Salisbury will examine the environmental, economic, and cultural factors that fostered both cooperation and hostility. NEW Liberal Arts Option Farm and Food Systems Farm and Food Systems at Greenfield Community College embodies a whole systems approach to sustainable farming and local food advocacy. Students learn hands-on skills through agricultural courses such as Four Season Farming, Beekeeping, and Organic Gardening. Additionally, we prepare our students to be critical food systems thinkers who understand how the global food system operates and the benefits of a resilient local food economy. Permaculture or regenerative design is another trademark of Farm and Food Systems, with courses that train students to read the landscape and create backyard, urban, and homestead designs that contribute to self-sufficiency while restoring ecosystem health. Credit–General Information Online Learning—Credit Courses What to expect from Fully-Online and Hybrid Courses All fully-online and hybrid courses are offered through Moodle, our learning management system. While these courses offer flexibility, they are not self-paced. Students may be expected to submit weekly assignments and participate in weekly discussions. Course expectations will be outlined in the syllabus. Most students spend approximately 1215 hours a week participating and completing assigned work in each online course. Students in these courses should log onto Moodle at least once a day.
Student Responsibility in Fully-Online Courses Students registered for a GCC class automatically receive a student email account. This account is used for all college-related correspondence. Log onto your GCC student email account the week before class starts to receive important information about your online class. Your instructor may contact you as well. Students are responsible for checking their GCC email on a daily basis.
