Tai Chi trains mind and body The 300-year-old Chinese exercise form provides activity with little stress to the body. JESSICA SALMOND STAFF WRITER

The movements are slow, but focused, the breaths deep but calculated. Ian Black and Jim Soda, prominent Realtors in Sarasota and Lakewood Ranch, look cool, calm and collected as their arms and legs swirl around them. It’s almost like dancing. The pair spends two sessions a week practicing the ancient exercise of Tai Chi, under the instruction of Black’s wife, Rosann Argenti. Argenti has been teaching Tai Chi since the 1980s, and even had her own television show about the exercise called “Tai Chi Innerwave,” which aired on PBS for nine years. Jim Soda, a residential Realtor with The Soda Group, part of Premier Sotheby’s International Realty office in Lakewood Ranch, jokingly said he became interested in Tai Chi when he noticed Black could hit a golf ball farther on the golf course than he could. So, about six months ago, he started doing sessions with Black and Argenti. Already, he’s hooked. Soda said he’d always had a difficult time sticking to a workout routine, whether riding a stationary biking or lifting weights, partly because of lower back problems. “Every time I did them, I got hurt,” Soda said. “Tai Chi was the first thing I could do that I didn’t

hurt myself.” The practice combines movements similar to martial arts with the slower pace of yoga for a gentle, yet effective exercise. Soda said after he learned the rhythm, movements and breathing techniques, he started noticing an almost immediate difference. He was pain-free after the sessions, and he became more energetic and more focused, both in the office and during Tai Chi lessons. “It helps you relax, gives you a business focus,” Soda said. “So much is going on. It helps you dial down and get a new attitude. It’s like a breath of fresh air.” Argenti and Black have been married for eight years, but Black, certified commercial investment member for his commercial realty company, Ian Black Real Estate, began learning the exercise from her after the couple met through a mutual friend 23 years ago. Black had always had a penchant for athletics — he used to play rugby and tennis — but found something different in Tai Chi. “This became a whole new system. It was a different way of looking at life,” he said. “I became more balanced, more focused.” Argenti noticed the difference in him, as well. She said after he started practicing, he became mentally and physically stronger and more focused, and opened his life up to more creative hobbies. The mental stability of the exercise also gave him a calm and

HISTORY Tai Chi is a form of Chinese exercise that is more than 300 years old. Families in the early times would develop movement techniques that would be unique to that family. The exercise started growing in popularity in the United States in California in the ’70s and ’80s. The art of aging By offering the Aging Mastery Program, Manatee and Sarasota soon will help individuals over 50 embrace growing older. BY AMANDA SEBASTIANO STAFF WRITER

As she watches men and women kick up their boots during a line dance routine at the Senior Enrichment Center of Meals on Wheels PLUS, Jackie Godlewski believes she’s helping make a difference. The enrichment center offers a spectrum of classes, such as lunch club and game time, for individuals ages 50 and older. “It’s so important to keep adults engaged socially and to embrace a positive attitude, even as they grow older,” said Godlewski, the center’s activity director. “We’re all about creating healthy and lasting relationships.” In October, the facility will add another resource to its lineup of services when it introduces the Aging Mastery Program, the brainchild of National Council on Aging. Meals on Wheels PLUS’ launch is invite-only and will serve as a precursor to its formal January launch of the program. Friendship Centers, in Sarasota, and Aging in Paradise Resource Center, on Longboat Key, also will implement the program around

the same time. The goal of the nationwide Aging Mastery is to provide tools to help participants embrace getting older. The 10-week sessions introduce participants to topics aligned with aging, such as fall prevention, medication management, community engagement, age-appropriate exercises, healthier eating habits and planning for end-of-life decisions. The cost is $100. “As kids, someone is always telling us what to do,” said Debra Jacobs, president and CEO of the Patterson Foundation, a partner on the project. “They say, ‘Go to school,’ ‘Do your homework,’ or, ‘Learn to drive.’ But as adults, no one tells you what to do. Sometimes we need that help, though, on the next chapter of our lives as we age.” Judi Bjork, general manager of Renaissance on 9th, which houses the Enrichment Center, said the class will teach individuals how to master good habits. Employees and volunteers are utilizing a point system with prizes for participants who excel in class. “This will be more than just a ‘sit down and listen’ kind of class,” she said. “Every topic involves an exercise or activity that the participant can go home and immediately put into practice the same day.” This is the first time the program will be rolled out in Florida. South Carolina, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and other states already offer it. The

National Council on Aging hopes to reach more than 5 million individuals by 2020, its website states. “Part of the reason this course is so interesting is because life expectancy has increased over the last 50 years,” said Peg Palmer, spokeswoman for Friendship Centers. “People are living longer.” Jacobs also hopes the course will show participants that their lives still have meaning, even after retirement, she said. “If you’ve got a pulse, you have a purpose,” Jacobs said.

An East County couple is introducing a holistic and gentle approach to chiropractic medicine. AMANDA SEBASTIANO STAFF WRITER

Chiropractors Laura and Logan Swaim are on a mission to bring a new paradigm of health to Lakewood Ranch. The husband-wife team believes a long life can be attributed to a holistic approach to overall health and wellness, and that means more conversations with doctors about health goals and maybe fewer prescription drugs when possible. They also believe chiropractic care is a critical piece to that equation, and in October will open The Roots Chiropractic, in San Marco Plaza. The practice will offer a no “twisting or cracking” approach to care and also will focus on expectant mothers and pediatric patients, although it will serve patients of all ages. Logan Swaim says the answer to being healthy is finding the root of the health problem. The brain, spinal chord, nerves and nervous system play specific and important roles in the body, and often are an underlying cause of discomfort for patients. “Your body is able to overcome a lot of different stresses without the use of drugs or surgery,” Logan Swaim said. The Swaims use a more gentle approach to chiropractic care,

using NASA-approved technology to assess the nervous system and how it is functioning and then apply a scientific technique to care for patients. “We don’t do any twisting or cracking on our patients,” Laura Swaim said. “We use specific and scientific care.” Prior to performing any services, though, they talk with their patients to determine where they may have physical pain and how their body, overall, is functioning. Then, they work with patients to craft chiropractic health plans and goals. “People see health as, ‘I feel fine. I don’t feel sick,’” Logan Swaim said. “It’s important to check on your body to maintain health and to consider mental wellbeing, too. Our goal is to maximize the patient’s life potential and help them get to the healthy level where they want to be.” Laura Swaim adds: “Life potential means living as long and healthy as your body is meant to. What we eat, drink, the amount of exercise we get, how often we have our bodies checked for nerve interference — all of those things are factors of life potential.” The practice will focus on expectant mothers and pediatrics — demographics the couple believes shouldn’t be overlooked. “It’s so important to have

your body checked while you’re pregnant,” Laura Swaim said. “Research has shown chiropractic care may reduce labor pain and delivery time by up to 60%.” The Swaims recommend children seek chiropractic attention within days of their birth to ensure their bodies aren’t experiencing nerve interference. “We believe healthy kids make healthy adults, which is why it is important to get your nerve interference checked as soon as possible, which may be hours or days after birth,” Laura Swaim said. They said children should receive chiropractic care at developmental milestones, including while learning to crawl and walk.

Pines of Sarasota takes a stand against falls A new fall-prevention program assesses your risk of falling and makes suggestions for improvement. AMANDA MORALES STAFF WRITER

Amanda Morales

Pines of Sarasota Lead Physical Therapist James McClure, right, helps Dickie Smothers try out the Biodex Balance System.

With age comes poise. With more age comes loss of balance. Pines of Sarasota, a rehabilitation and senior care community, hopes to combat injuries, hospitalizations and even deaths resulting from falls with risk assessment tests. The Ready & Steady program has been offered to residents at Pines of Sarasota on a trial basis and now is open to the public. “Most of the time we see patients in rehab, unfortunately, is after the fact that they’ve fallen already or have injuries,” said Joel Amistoso, director of rehabilitation services at Pines of Sarasota. “If we can actually see them ahead of time, hopefully, we can help to prevent the fall and having to have a new hip or new knee.” According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, individuals 65 and older who fall once are two to three times more likely to fall again. Statistics from the CDC also show that falls result in more than 2.5 million injuries, more than 734,000 hospitalizations and more than 21,700 deaths each year. Amistoso said that many of the ways older adults end up with injuries result from doing the activities they enjoy most, such as tennis, golf and walking along the beach. Through the Ready & Steady

program, he can better determine what measures patients can take to prevent potential falls. First, patients answer a questionnaire that asks questions varying from what prescriptions they take to their level of activity. “Believe it or not, just doing the questionnaire will tell you if you’re going to be at risk or not,” Amistoso said. “An example would be if you’re taking more than four medications — that is combining over the county and prescription drugs. If so, the CDC says you’re already at a higher risk.”

Other questions on the test help determine the patient’s level of strength or physical limitations. For example, whether a patient has been to an eye doctor in the last 12 months is an indication of their level of depth perception. The second step is called a “T.U.G.” test or a Timed Up and Go test. This test measures how long it takes the patient to stand from a sitting position and walk 10 feet, turn around and return to a chair to sit down. The “T.U.G.” test is followed by standing on a Biodex Balance System machine. Patients step up to a platform with a blue disk below their feet. A screen in front of them shows two dots on a target. The goal is to keep both dots lined up in the center of the target by balancing while the disk shifts in different directions. Armrests on the side of the platform allow patients to catch themselves if they become off-balance, but the objective is to do the exercise with as little support as possible. The results of all three tests are then compiled to determine the best ways to prevent future falls. Pines of Sarasota offers clients physical therapy and other treatments to help clients improve balance, for example. “It can be as simple as doing your own thing at home, or maybe you need to go back to your doctor and get that medication checked,” Amistoso said. “Maybe from time to time you may need physical therapy. If you have joint pain, stiffness or your balance is not straight, we can work with you with that.”

JEN BLANCO SPORTS EDITOR

E

splanade Golf and Country Club Director of Tennis Jason Golden first started hitting the wall in middle school, and from that point on, the Summerfield resident had a racket in his hand whenever he could. Golden began taking tennis lessons twice a week from his eventual high school tennis coach. Golden also played basketball, but he felt most at home on the court. “I liked that it was something I could do by myself,” Golden says. “Whenever you hit the wall, the ball kept coming back. It was both mentally and physically challenging.” Following his collegiate tennis career at Lakeland College, in Plymouth, Wis., Golden served as the head tennis professional for a club in Maui, Hawaii, before moving to Florida and turning his attention to coaching. “Coaches have a lot of influence,” Golden says. “Coaches teach for the purpose of being in people’s lives and helping them reach a level they necessarily can’t reach by themselves, whether it’s in sports or life.”

Jen Blanco

Tennis professional Jason Golden hopes one day to complete an ultramarathon.

MARATHON MAN

Golden now is preparing for

his fifth and six marathons, the Goofy Challenge and the Celebration Marathon, respectively, which he plans to run in January. He ran his first marathon six years ago after discussing the topic with a friend. “It intrigued me,” Golden says. “I picked up my training, and it’s taken off from there.” Golden tries to run one or two marathons a year. Eventually, Golden, who has run roughly 100 half marathons, a combination of both road races and individual marathon training routes, has aspirations of running an ultramarathon, a run that’s longer than 26.2 miles. HITTING THE COURT

In addition to running four days a week, Golden also hits regularly. He also gives tennis lessons and clinics, which helps him stay active throughout the workday. It also provides Golden with the opportunity to share his passion for athletics with club members. “One thing athletics has taught me is that everyone is on their own journey,” Golden says. “It’s a process regardless of activity.”

HEALTHY EATING

Golden used to be a vegetarian before deciding to start adding fish to his meal plan. He’s a firm believer that diet and exercise go hand-in-hand. Although Golden tends to take a more black-and-white approach to nutrition, he admits it’s OK to make the occasional exception, especially if it involves frozen yogurt. “I think it’s OK to go ahead and

DIET Golden starts the day with a meal replacement shake or a power bar. Lunch consists of a salad, followed by another salad and fish for dinner. Light snacks, such as almonds, in between meals help fuel Golden throughout the day.

REGIMEN Golden runs three days a week for about an hour and completes a longer four- to four-and-a-half hour run on Sundays. He runs about 30 miles a week and cross trains with tennis.

cheat with what you eat and not be so stringent, but just do it in moderation,” Golden says. SAND TRAP

Golden played youth football, basketball and tennis growing up. Tennis has remained an integral part of his life as an adult, and over the years, he has added running to the mix. But don’t expect Golden to be teeing off anytime soon. He admits golf is the one sport he has no interest in playing. “I just don’t have the patience for it,” says Golden, whose wife, Wendi, is a former Ladies Professional Golf Association player and high school golf coach. However, Golden wishes he had played more soccer growing up because it encompasses running and valuable life lessons.

CPR training promotes World Heart Day

Courtesy

Want to learn CPR? Now’s your chance. To celebrate World Heart Day Sept. 29, the Florida Department of Health in Manatee County will host a Hands-Only CPR training, while reminding the public that heart disease and stroke are the world’s leading causes of death. The Hands-Only CPR method is CPR without mouth-tomouth breaths and is recommended for use by people who see a teen or adult suddenly collapse in an out-of-hospital setting, such as at work or at a park. It consists of two steps: calling 9-1-1 and pushing hard and fast in the center of the test. The training will run from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Manatee Technical College, 6305 State Road 70 E., Bradenton. In Florida, 23.4% of adults 65 and older reported that in 2013 they had been told by a healthcare provider they had experienced a heart attack, coronary heart disease or stroke. Heart disease was the No. 1 cause of death in Florida in 2014. This year’s World Heart Day theme is creating heart-healthy environments.

Manatee Technical College will transform into a medical clinic Nov. 21 and Nov. 22 when it hosts Remote Area Medical.

Remote Area Medical seeks volunteers Remote Area Medical’s first event in Florida is still months away, but local organizers have big needs to fill. Specifically, they need more than 500 volunteers, including medical practitioners and the general public, to help pull off the event, which will transform Manatee Technical College into a medical clinic Nov. 21 and Nov. 22. The clinic will provide more than $1 million worth of free dental, vision, general medical and educational services to the public. Care is targeted toward indigent care, but no one is turned away based on income. Organizers Doug Schiller and

Dr. Richard Conard expect more than 2,500 people to come from Sarasota and Manatee counties and throughout Florida to receive services. Remote Area Medical is a national nonprofit that provides medical care to underserved, impoverished or isolated communities through mobile clinics, among other services. The public can apply for the RAM clinic in East County starting Nov. 20 and clients will be served on a first-come, firstserved basis. The MTC campus will offer free parking and provide port-a-lets for the public as they wait to receive services. Individuals who wish to volunteer or make a donation toward the clinic’s $87,000 budgetary needs can call Schiller at 932-6147.

Volunteers ‘shine’ light on Medicare questions Medicare beneficiaries, their caregivers and family members with questions about Medicare and related health insurance options have a new place to find answers. The Senior Connection Center will partner with Meals on Wheels PLUS, which operates The Food Bank of Manatee, to provide Medicare counseling through the SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) program. On the third Tuesday of each month, specially trained volunteers of the SHINE program will offer Medicare counseling at the new Daybreak Adult Day Center, 10920 State Road 70

East, Bradenton. SHINE is a program of the Florida Department of Elder Affairs that empowers Medicare beneficiaries to make informed decisions about their health care coverage. Volunteers can answer questions about Medicare, Medicaid, prescription assistance, longterm care planning and more. Because service hours vary, interested individuals should call the Elder Helpine at 800336-226 to make an appointment. For more information, visit floridashine.org.

The Breast Health Center at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center

offers advanced imaging technologies to our community.

At our hospital’s Breast Health Center, our primary goal is to deliver the highest quality care to the women of our community. In addition to breast ultrasound and MRI, we offer such women’s health diagnostic services as …

3-D IMAGING TECHNOLOGY Unlike two-dimensional images of the breast, the 3D mammogram allows breast tissue to be examined one layer at a time, detecting very small cancers. A 3D imaging exam is very similar to a traditional mammogram, and takes approximately the same amount of time.

To make an appointment, call 941.745.7391.

COMPUTER-AIDED DETECTION (CAD) Using sophisticated computer algorithms, any areas on the digital mammogram image that might indicate the presence of an abnormality are immediately highlighted.

STEREOTACTIC SUROS/99 BREAST BIOPSY Digital stereotactic localization is computerassisted technology that maps the site of the abnormality. Then, a tissue sample is taken immediately, speeding the healing process and improving accuracy, quality and efficiency of the biopsy.
