WE ARE GBCA

OUR MISSION

General Building Contractors Association advances the union commercial, industrial, and institutional construction industry by serving members as the leader in labor relations, education, advocacy, safety, and networking opportunities.

OUR HISTORY

Established in 1891, we are the Philadelphia chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC). We provide over 325 member companies with access to advocacy, networking opportunities, safety services, education and training programs. We proudly support and promote union commercial construction, and take strides toward advancing the industry with workforce development initiatives.

As one of America’s oldest trade associations, we advance commercial construction in the Philadelphia region by serving as a powerful voice and a critical resource.

2

BUILDING THE NEXT LEVEL

GBCA is the recognized leader of the Philadelphia region’s union commercial construction industry. When members want to improve how their businesses operate, they turn to us. Guiding the industry to success is not a game, but to help members achieve excellence in 2022, GBCA strategically approached our services, to keep our members informed, educated, and ready for anything.

3

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

GBCA is a force in the union commercial construction industry. Our collective work throughout 2022 demonstrates this. We are one of the most well-established and wellrespected groups of professionals in the field, and we continue to push boundaries to set the standard for building excellence, as well as help our members reach new levels of success.

Achieving these goals relies on the quality of our workforce across the board. We have made great strides toward strengthening and diversifying our pipeline, as well as providing world-class learning and professional development opportunities for employees of GBCA member companies.

These efforts are paying off. The Carpenters’ Apprentice Ready Program (CARP) is bringing prepared and motivated candidates into the trades. Industry leaders are effectively building up the next generation of construction professionals through our Construction

Leadership Council (CLC). And our training programs and online learning resources are enhancing education for both office and field personnel.

Progress on these and other fronts sets the stage for further success as GBCA remains focused on recruiting young professionals, increasing industry collaboration, and fortifying relationships with elected, civic, and community leaders.

It has been my privilege to have a hand in leading our association as Chairman of your GBCA Board of Directors. I’m extremely proud of what we have achieved together. Thanks to all of our hardworking members and staff, commercial construction in Greater Philadelphia has never been stronger.

4

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO

In 2022, GBCA successfully took Philadelphia’s union commercial construction industry to the next level. With key support from our association, our members embarked on and delivered truly outstanding projects that represent next-level excellence, next-level innovation, and next-level leadership.

We proudly awarded a record number of Project Safety Awards, a record number of Construction Excellence Awards, and over 15 awards honoring longtime GBCA members for more than 25, 50, and 75 years of leadership and industry engagement.

Thanks to our GBCA Board of Directors, committee members, and, of course, our staff, we also took our programming to the next level. Just a few of these accomplishments include making our construction education and safety resources more accessible with over 100 mobile-friendly safety toolbox talks for workers in the field as well as a robust offering

of online construction education courses to help professionals further their careers.

All of this is the foundation for our future, from buildings that strengthen our region and stand the test of time, to city-supporting programs that develop a thriving, inclusive workforce as we continue to drive the industry forward.

On the heels of an extremely productive year, we’re more energized than ever to advocate for our members — the elite builders in the region — and together, build what’s next.

LEVEL THREE TAKE ACTION

Once the team is assembled, it’s time to act! GBCA is a key influencer with the expertise, resources, and ability to push for proconstruction policies in the region. We also work with our elected officials to help them understand how their decisions will impact the Philadelphia region’s businesses and growth.

ADVOCACY SUCCESSES

• GBCA, along with business community partners, worked with the City of Philadelphia to lower the city wage tax rates.

• GBCA advocated for extending the duration of building permits in the City of Philadelphia.

• GBCA worked with members of City Council to keep the increase of Contractor Parking Permits as low as possible.

INDUSTRY RELATIONSHIPS

GBCA connects our member contractors with leaders in the industry, including major institutions and area developers. Organizations such as the Philadelphia Real Estate Alliance and the AIA/GBCA Joint Committee encourage dialogue and strong working relationships between industry groups.

Contractors, Designers, and Developers gathered for Delivering Discoveries: Building for the Life Sciences.

LEVEL FOUR EXPAND THE WORKFORCE

As we made our way through 2022, we knew that we needed to keep building up the team of commercial construction industry workers. As importantly, we also worked to ensure that our workforce reflects our region. We’re a Philadelphia-based association helping our local region’s individuals join our industry.
