Gazette Grandé. While the premise was based on a “Good News” newspaper - this does not mean a simply “warm and fuzzy” approach. It means unbiased coverage of the facts. Accuracy of the facts. High level of attention to detail to avoid ridiculous mitaskes. As well as shining a spot light on the fun, unique, quirky and good people of all ages from the communities surrounding us. It’s just “good” reading plain and simple. www.gatewaygazette.ca

Carmangay Going Green? The small southern Alberta village of Carmangay will soon be home to a large wind energy project expected to commence next year. Alberta Utilities Commission gave the go-ahead to Calgary-based Greengate Power to build the project, which will generate enough power to supply 100,000 homes and reduce greenhouse gases significantly. It is also believed that the initiative will create jobs and provide increased tax revenues for Vulcan County and royalties for landowners.

By-law Changes

Is something getting a lot of mainstream Media-hype - but you just want the “facts”? Let us know! We will focus on the things YOU, our readers, ask us to (that isn’t massively depressing)! Submissions are accepted, however, due to space restrictions, we ask that you keep your submissions as short as possible. This also encourages more readership. Even 100-200 words is highly effective.

Please note, we are in a soft launch stage and as such may not attain a concrete bi-weekly schedule immediately. The more advertisers that come on board for a committed period the sooner we can maintain bi-weekly consistency.

Get Lucky By Todd Curran Since the beginning of time, people have sought out good luck symbols for protection and good fortune. St. Patrick's Day might be an Irish celebration, but you can get lucky with these symbols from around the world! To the Celts, skulls symbolized time, power, divinity, creation and initiation. But that’s just a hint of the tradition behind the unique beliefs making this a lucky symbol. Shamrock and clover, do you know the meaning of each of the four-leaves or that wearing, possessing or dreaming of a lucky clover all hold different representations? The Lucky Star dates back to ancient times with these interesting beliefs. Horseshoes, upside down, right side up or turned on it’s side? There’s more to this than common knowledge. Rainbows, we all know where to find the pot of gold. But do you know about it’s connection with the num-

ber 7? Lucky Number 7 is held in high regard on the luck scale in many cultures. But there’s more behind this symbol than you may be aware of. Dragonflies represent change, the subconscious, or dream state, prosperity, strength, courage, peace, harmony and purity. Elephants are a Symbol of Wisdom, Power, Loyalty, Intelligence, Strength and Solitude. The Frog has been a symbol of prosperity, wealth, friendship and abundance in many cultures and a symbol of fertility in others. Publishers Choice (this is my favourite part): Dream Catchers: Native cultures consider dream catchers to bring good fortune because they catch the negative images from dreams. As legend has it, a spider was quietly spinning his web in his own space. It was beside the sleeping space of Nokomis, the grandmother. Each day, Nokomis watched the spider at work, quietly spinning away. One day as she was watching him, her grandson came

in. "Nokomis-iya!" he shouted, glancing at the spider. He stomped over to the spider, picked up a shoe and went to hit it. "No-keegwa," the old lady whispered, "don't hurt him.” When the boy left, the spider went to the old woman and thanked her for saving his life. He said to her, "For many days you have watched me spin and weave my web. You have admired my work. In return for saving my life, I will give you a gift." He smiled and moved away, spinning as he went. Soon the moon glistened on a magical silvery web moving gently in the window. "See how I spin" he said. "See and learn, for bad dreams will become hopelessly entangled in the web. Only good dreams will go through the small hole. This is my gift to you.” This is a summary of a terrific article that was unfortunately too long to make our pages for this print run. However, as a special treat for this timely piece you can enjoy the full article on our blog. Please visit: www.gatewaygazette.ca for access to our Article Blog.

ü On March 11th a powerful 8.9 Richter Scale earthquake struck off

Japan's northeast coast, triggering a deadly tsunami that washed far inland. The quake struck at 2:46 p.m. local time at a depth of 24 kilometres about 125 kilometres off the coast. Of the dozens of aftershocks, two registered 7.1 and 6.6 in magnitude. Japan's worst previous quake occurred in 1923 in Kanto, an 8.3 magnitude temblor that killed 143,000 people. ü A perfect ten out of ten bone marrow match has been found for seven year

Pu`u `Ō `ō crater floor continues to erupt lava spattering up to 25m high. Live views of Kīlauea's eruption are available via webcam accessed at http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/hvo/cams/NCcam/. Kilauea is located in Hawaii's Volcanoes National Park and is one of the most active volcano in the world. ü Supporters of Moammar Gadhafi's Libyan regime tightened their grip on

the capitol city of Tripoli. The resulting retreat by opposition fighters gave the Gadhafi camp fresh momentum against rebels seeking to oust the Libyan leader. ü Ted Morton, Doug Horner, Alison Redford and Doug Griffiths have all

The Benefits Of Craniosacral Therapy

Courses designed by osteopathic physician John Upledger, who developed Craniosacral Therapy, have been taught internationally. Close to 100,000 practitioners have been trained worldwide since the 1980s and Kirsten Menk recently participated in the

CranioSacral Therapy workshops offered by the Upledger Institute. The technique is a gentle, light touch therapy used to detect and correct imbalances in the craniosacral system, which may be the cause of sensory, motor or neurological dysfunction. The craniosacral system consists of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and the spinal cord. It extends from the bones of the skull, face and mouth down to the sacrum. Its rhythm can be felt anywhere in the body through the fascia. The therapy has

been successfully used to treat headaches and migraines, neck and back pain, TMJ problems, chronic fatigue, motor coordination difficulties, autism, ADD, dyslexia, eye problems and central nervous system disorders. Kirsten was inspired to take the courses after personally experiencing the positive effects of the Therapy when being worked on by another practitioner. She has started a blog and will be doing a presentation at the Diamond Valley Business Expo in Turner Valley on March 19th to spread the word about the amazing benefits of Craniosacral Therapy. To read the blog and get more information about Craniosacral Therapy visit: www.cranialworks.org or email: cdncountry@yahoo.com.

Champion, located 147 kilometres south of Calgary, is the largest village in Vulcan County. British, American and Canadian homesteaders began arriving in the Champion area in 1904, as the vast prairie grasslands, cut through by the Little Bow River, provided ideal country for farming and ranching. Champion is now home to a variety of locally owned businesses and two schools, the Champion Community School

(115 students in grades 19, plus a parent-run kindergarten), and the Hope Christian School (grades K-12). Recreational and cultural services in the village include the Champion Public Library, the Community Pool (outdoors), the Pioneer Club Seniors' Drop-In Centre, two baseball fields, the Champion Community Park and Campground, the Rodeo arena, and in the winter, a skating arena with natural ice. The village also serves as a

gateway to Little Bow Provincial Park, which is located 20 kilometres east of the village and provides camping and many other outdoor recreational activities. Since its founding, the Village of Champion has celebrated its anniversary every five years, traditionally on the July 1st long weekend. In 2011 the town will celebrate its 100th anniversary, an important celebration for which planning has been underway for some years.

Calgary: Evergreen Evergreen is a suburban residential neighbourhood in the southwest quadrant of Calgary, Alberta. It is located south of the lovely Fish Creek Provincial Park, and southeast from the Tsuu T'ina First Nation reserve. Residents enjoy an enviable position somewhere

between urban and rural, with quick access to city conveniences, and easy escape routes to outdoor wonderlands like Kananaskis Country. An overwhelming number of homes in the neighbourhood are single-family detached houses and over fifty percent of the resi-

dents are in the age bracket from 24 to 55 years. Fish Creek Provincial Park is a rare gem for a city the size of Calgary: a vast area of protected natural space with kilometres of trails for hiking, biking and running. For Evergreen residents, it's their backyard.

The staff at Millrise Place competed against 26 other teams from the Calgary area (including Banff and Cochrane) to capture the 2010 Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, NWT & Nunavut's Spirit Award. The award is based on a spirit points ranking system covering 14 different criteria that include enthusiasm, team spirit, team cheer, themed t-shirts and generally, making a lot of noise. Earlier this year, Millrise Place staffers enthusiastically braved rain and wind to pedal approximately two kilometers in Fish Creek Park to raise $10,010. “We are honoured to receive the Heart & Stroke Spirit Award,” says Carole Kelly, Executive Director of Care for Millrise Place. “In addition to raising money

It was also a great team and spirit building event for our employees who are passionate about giving back to the communities in which we operate.” Located in SW and NE Calgary, Millrise and Monterey Place are among the most progressive Seniors' Assisted Living residences in Calgary. Taking great pride in providing an independent quality of life for their residents, staff and management strive to provide exemplary housing, personal care, safety, security and companionship that translate into peace of mind for residents and their families. The Sheep River Health Trust's Golf 4 Wellness Committee has started the preliminary preparation for the 8th Annual Golf 4 Wellness Charity Golf Tournament hosted at D'Arcy Ranch Golf Course on July 21st 2011. The Okotoks Western Wheel Readers Choice Awards honoured Golf 4 Wellness as the best fundraising event of 2010 and the committee is planning to exceed expectations for our 8th Annual G4W Tournament. The theme for this year's tournament is “Hockey Night in Okotoks” hosted by none other than legendary Don Cherry (aka Gery Schubert). Golfers are invited to come out dressed in their favourite hockey gear for a chance to win some great prizes. “Some of our golfers and sponsors from last year have already started their

search for the craziest suit jacket to join in all of the fun. Who knew raising money to support rural health care could be this much fun!” said Melissa Pryor Fund Development Officer and Committee Volunteer. Over the past eight years the Sheep River Health Trust Charity Golf Tournament has raised over $695,000 in support of rural health care. Net proceeds support the purchase of urgently needed medical equipment, programs and services in the Sheep River Health Trust communities including: Black Diamond, DeWinton, Longview, Millarville, Okotoks, Priddis, Turner Valley and the areas in between. Last year, not only were we named the Best Fundraising Event of 2010 but most importantly we raised over $95,000 which helped

us support various health and wellness programs. Please visit: www.sheepriverhealthtrust. ca for more information on how to get involved in this great event or call our office at (403) 995-5400. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to register for what is planned to be the Best Fundraising Event of the Foothills 2011.

Hope and Healing We are a registered nonprofit society with charitable status and we rely on the support of community donors to continue our programming and services. Without the amazing support of local businesses and individuals, Rowan House Emergency Shelter would not be able to protect the women and children of the rural Foothills. Currently Rowan House is a tiny two bedroom facility located in the basement of an adolescent group home. We have significantly outgrown our current facility and are in desperate need of a larger, more secure shelter. Every year we turn away more families than we can house. We have purchased land in the Town of High River and raised $700,000 to date. We need an additional $800,000 to complete this facility in 2011. This dream will only become a reality through the generosity of local businesses and individual supporters. Hope and Healing Gala 2011 We are asking for your support. This is your opportunity to truly make a difference in the lives of women and children throughout the Foothills community. Funds raised at

our Hope and Healing Gala will go directly to build this new Shelter. We are also requesting donations of auction items for the 2011 Hope & Healing Gala. This gala takes place May 14th at the Highwood Memorial Centre in High River. Cocktails served at 5:30pm and dinner at 6:30pm. Enjoy the sounds of Motown courtesy of Toshi Jackson & the Silhouettes and take a trip back in time with Elvis aka Larry Ray. Jim “Bearcat” Murray, former trainer for the Calgary Flames will also be a guest at this special evening. For tickets call 403-938-6785 or email info@rowanhouseonline.org or pick them up in person at Cottonwood Bridal and Formals in High River. Please be a proud supporter of Rowan House Emergency Shelter and be a part of making a difference! On March 23rd enjoy an “Evening of Indulgence by Generations Chiropractic”. Women over 18 are welcome to come to the Heritage Inn in High River between 7 and 9pm with the first 75 women receiving a goodie bag. (A huge “Thank You” to Generations Chiropractic for

donating the proceeds from last year's event to Rowan House!) Coco Rouge Boutique (200 Southridge Drive) in Okotoks accepts consignment clothing for the Rowan House account. If you would like to donate clothing, it should be clean, gently used, and folded into garbage bags. When you drop it off at Coco, let the staff know it's for Rowan House and usually within 2 weeks the clothing is ready for sale. A portion of the sales go to Rowan House. This and That Décor (48 North Railway Street) in Okotoks are donating $2 from every teddy bear sold, to Rowan House. You can also shop online at their website http://thisandthatdecor.ca. Did you know? …the Rowan tree is also known as the Mountain Ash. The berries, often retained through the winter, symbolize the endurance of life through the dark of the year and the tree itself was said to afford protection to the dwelling by which it grew. Rowan trees have traditionally been associated with peace, sanctuary, privacy and beauty. The Rowan Tree symbolizes what we at Rowan House stand for.

Birth of a Nation

Submitted by Gordon Day The annual Birth of a Nation parade and ceremonies will again be held in Turner Valley on April 9th honouring the Battle of Vimy Ridge. The parade will form up near the Turner Valley Fire Station and continue down Main Street to the Legion, where the ceremonies will be held. This year, the Resolution to have this day honoured as a nationally recognized day will be presented by two veterans to the Member of Parliament. Area community mayors have been invited to arrive with letters of support to also be presented to the Prime Minister. There has been positive support from the communities, most of which have declared the 9th of April as Birth of a Nation Day. The 9th of April is a most important day in the history

of Canada and most worthy of recognition and honour. It was a cool Easter Monday when, for the first time, Canadian troops acted independently and captured the almost impenetrable six and a half mile ridge in France where a German stronghold defied all assaults. With careful planning, courage, training and determination, the Canadians captured the Ridge taking more land, prisoners and armament than ever taken by a military force. The taking of Vimy Ridge cleared any notion of the Germans taking over Europe, destroying any future plans of German occupation of Europe. The successful operation gained the Canadians the respect of the world and were, and are still, considered one of the most effective fighting forces. The then Prime Minister,

Robert Borden, declared that Canada, remaining loyal to the Crown and Empire, would be a dominion unto itself and over its land, people, waters and foreign operations. This was the Birth of a Nation. An appeal is being made to make the Ninth of April a Nationally recognized day in honour and recognition of the taking of Vimy Ridge, the freeing of Europe and honouring the casualties. Birth of a Nation Day is perhaps the most important day in the history of Canada. Canadians should be aware of its significance and it is vital that our students be taught its value in our schools. All communities in Alberta have been encouraged to recognize this day and to have flags flown in every residence and business. It is time that Canadians show their pride and respect.

Music is an integral part of both the wedding ceremony and the reception. Music often conveys emotions that are difficult to put into words. Additionally, songs and music help us to remember certain key moments more easily. That's why we often associate rites of passage with the sound track of that time in our lives. Consider the following: The Ceremony Can you picture the bride and her attendants walking down the aisle without any music? Many couples give careful consideration to the reception music and leave the ceremony music to chance - not a good idea. While traditionally brides enter to "Here Comes the Bride," stricter houses of worship may not allow this tune or brides simply may prefer something else. Just keep in mind the tempo and length of the song so that it will match the gait and size of the wedding party. If your house of worship provides the musician(s), arrange to sit down with this individual to talk about styles. Perhaps you can arrange to hear the selections. Also arrange to have payment or a tip provided for his or her services. The Reception You will likely have more wiggle room with your choices at the reception, depending on the venue. Brides and grooms usually use live performers or DJs who play prerecorded music. Some performers offer a combination of both. Consider the style of your wedding. Will it be formal or informal? Traditional or contemporary? Aim for music that suits the style or theme of the wedding. When you are choosing music, consider your tastes, but the tastes of

your guests as well. While you won't be able to please each and every person, the wider the range of music you have available, the greater the chance of people getting up to dance and enjoying themselves. Contracts Once you decide on your ceremony and reception musicians, it's important to sign a contract and work out payment agreements. Having the information in writing protects you in case the musicians don't deliver what was expected. Here are some points that should be covered in the contracts. * Price, deposit amount, additional charges (travel, food requirements, etc.) and overtime rates. * The number of musicians who will be attending and what instruments they play, in the case of a wedding band. * Names of specific people you want, such as DJ, lead vocalist, emcee, and what compensation will be made if these people are not available. * Date and hours they'll be working. * Additional services, such as dramatic lighting, dancers or party favours. * Number of breaks and how the break time will be covered, such as with recorded music. * Style of dress or costumes. * Specific music requests and list of your wedding attendants so they'll have the right names if announcements are being made. Be sure to ask friends, relatives and others for musician recommendations. When you attend weddings, take the cards of performers you enjoyed. Contact prospective performers early on to ensure your wedding date is available.

Wedding Issues 5 Possible Problems And Some Advice 1. The Wedding Know-It-All The Problem: "My future sister-in-law is telling me I shouldn't wear a white dress because it would be too harsh with my skin tone, wants to register for gifts with me (as well as tell me what to register for) and is suggesting where we honeymoon!” The Advice: When wedding suggestions cross the line from helpful to aggravating, it's time to redirect that input so that you don't end up arguing over something that might not seem so significant a few years down the line. Assign specific tasks to keep her busy but still involved, like helping you confirm orders with vendors or assembling favours.

2. The Doesn't-Know-Her-Place Wedding Guest The Problem: "One of our guests keeps insisting that we invite everyone on her 'party guest list' to our destination wedding - I even found an open invite on her MySpace page!" The Advice: Some wedding guests take it upon themselves to suggest a few invitees and then some guests invite everyone on the Internet. Unless you want Tom from MySpace raising a glass to toast your union, make sure it's clear that there's only one guest list for your wedding. Luckily, rationalizing a small guest list is a lot easier when you have a destination wedding just explain that you're having an intimate wedding with close friends and family only (she should feel honoured that she's one of them!)

3. The Testy Bridesmaid

5. The Children-Or-Bust Wedding Guest

The Problem: "I love my maid of honour, but getting her in a dress that wasn't black or covered every inch of her was a task. If we found a colour or a print, she would tell me that she didn't want to take attention away from the bride.” The Advice: If one of your bridesmaids is a little nervous about showing some skin or wearing a bold colour, it's better to find her an alternate option than to force her into something she's not comfortable with. For a modest maid of honour, make a strapless dress more conservative by incorporating a wrap, a fun cardigan or a vintage bolero jacket in a complementing shade. Or play up your colour palette in a subtler way with jewellery or hair fascinators. Look at the bright side - compromising now will give you a little leverage when you serve as a maid in her wedding.

4. The Over-Eager Wedding Guest The Problem: "A woman my mother works with wants to do my ceremony music and a customer of my mother's always volunteers to help and acts like she is family. I hardly know her!” The Advice: You know that expression about too many cooks in the kitchen? Meet its wedding equivalent. Having a lot of people offer to help you plan sounds like a blessing, but when assistance comes from left field, it can feel like more of a hindrance. If you feel like someone's eagerness is a bit more than you need, let her know how grateful you are for the offer, but that you're in great shape, planning-wise, and that if anything comes up that she could help with, you'll be sure to call.

See your

The Advice: A lot of couples choose not to invite kids to their wedding, but if you risk a boycott by some VIPs, find a way to soothe the situation. Offer to hire a babysitter and set up a private area with games, colouring books and a few comfy pillows for little ones to crash on if the reception runs past their bedtimes. Your relatives might even offer to chip in once they see how accommodating you're being, but if they don't, the extra expense will be worth bypassing the drama of a fight with your new family.

The Problem: "My husband-to-be has a niece and nephew (both under five) and his sister, her husband and his parents said they would refuse to come if the children aren't allowed."

And finally it is time for the groom to carry his new bride across the threshold And finally, what wedding tradition would be complete without the groom carrying his new bride over the threshold of their home? This Western European tradition began with two beliefs. The first one was that if the bride were to trip or stumble as she entered her new home (as she crossed her new threshold for the first time) bad luck would plague the marriage. The second belief was that evil spirits inhabited the threshold of a new couple's home and that if the bride stepped on the threshold the evil spirits would enter through her feet and the marriage would be doomed. The romantic answer, of course, was for the groom to carry his new bride across the threshold.

Valley Vines by Sarah Harrold

A California Wine With A Western Spirit Are you stuck in a wine “rut?” Do you wander around the wine racks in your local liquor store looking at every bottle, occasionally thinking “I wonder what that one tastes like?” or “that one looks interesting,” but in the end you always grab that same familiar label?

Maybe it's a comfort thing; you know exactly what you are getting every time you open the bottle. Perhaps you just really love the taste and no matter how many times you enjoy a glass, it never seems to get old. Then again, you could be just like the majority of the population and have a fear of change. Whether it's twelve, twenty or thirty dollars, no one likes to pay for a product and not know if they are going to love it or end up dumping it down the kitchen sink. I can help; my name is Sarah Harrold from Valley Cold Beer and Liquor in Turner Valley. My plan is to showcase some of the many wonderful wines out there and to help you break out of your “wine comfort zone.” After all, if you never try anything new, you will really be missing out on some wonderful wines. Please keep an open mind; wine is a personal preference, but there are many products to choose from. My first wine to showcase is the 2008 Lucky Horseshoe Merlot from Hayes Ranch, located in Livermore in the North Central Coast region of California. This area of Cali-

Bl

fornia has warm days, cool nights and a long growing season, which develops ripe, round, fruit flavours. Produced by the Wente Family Estates and represented by Simmer Fine Wine & Spirits Inc, Lucky Horseshoe has a varietal content of 85% Merlot, 15% Petite Sirah and an alcohol content of 13.5%. This Merlot has exciting hints of spice and berries, which exhibits aromas of plum, bramble and a hint of herbaceousness. With medium tannins and a smooth, long, fruity finish on the palate, this is definitely a delightful wine! This Merlot will be best paired with roast beef, tenderloin, pork, any pasta with a meat sauce or hard cheeses. Personally, I prefer to enjoy a glass on its own, surrounded by friends. Priced below sixteen dollars, I highly recommend the Lucky Horseshoe Merlot. Visit us on our website at www.valleyliquor.ca or email info@valleyliquor.ca for more information on the upcoming in store tasting and specials for this wine. Please enjoy responsibly. Don't drink and drive.

Receiving Line: Etiquette, Options & Tips What they say about weddings is true: It'll all be over before you know it. So then how can you ensure you'll get the chance to talk to each and every guest before the bell tolls? Enter the receiving line - the most formal and efficient line dance you'll ever do. Here's how to connect with your company and give guests your most heartfelt greetings and gratitude. Why Have One? A receiving line is the best opportunity to greet each guest individually and thank him or her for coming to your wedding. And if you're having more than 50 guests, it's considered proper etiquette. The line also guarantees your guests a minute of face-to-face time with you, a chance to hug, kiss and congratulate you both, and to say things like "The ceremony was lovely." If you rely instead on the more casual greet-them-as-you-seethem approach, you may spend the whole party in a tailspin, ducking out of conversations to say hello to people you haven't greeted yet, and inevitably you'll end up missing someone. When and Where? Generally the receiving line is formed immediately following the ceremony or at the beginning of the reception. You'll want to take spatial constraints into consideration when choosing where to line up so that family and bridal party members aren't standing on top of each other and guests have room to move in a smooth, orderly procession (which in turn makes the line go faster so you can all get on to the party). Proper ventilation is also crucial to avoid sweaty brows and swooning bridesmaids. The most commonly used ceremony site areas include the hallway or vestibule at the head of the aisle, outside the entry doors, down the front steps or on the front porch. At your reception site the options are many, depending on the party space: consider the cocktail lounge, the lobby, just outside the doors leading into the main room or the reception room itself, perhaps on the dance floor. Ultimately, pick a spot where you and your guests can stand comfortably for the duration. Who Stands in it? Traditionally, the bride's parents, as hosts, head the receiving line and are first to greet guests, followed by the bride and groom and then the groom's parents. Many lines we've seen also include the entire bridal party (if there's room) and sometimes even grandparents (if they're able). Today, however, with more couples contributing to or paying for their own weddings, the lines have blurred (so to speak). The couple may wish to stand alone, especially if the majority of guests are their friends or they may stand with just the moms while the dads circulate among and welcome the crowd during the cocktail hour. Divorced and Remarried Parents This may be one of the stickier situa-

tions you'll encounter when orchestrating the big day and the resolution often depends on the relationships between the relevant parties. If your parents are divorced, they should not stand next to one another in line - even if they are sharing hosting duties - as this gives the impression that they are still a couple. Instead, place Mom on one side of you and the groom, then the groom's parents, then Dad. If this arrangement doesn't sit well, consider placing another family member or an honour attendant between them. And what about stepparents? Should you include them too? That depends: Do you have a good relationship with them? Is your mom/dad capable of sharing this duty with your step mom/dad with civility and grace? You should strive to make everyone feel as comfortable as possible. If this arrangement gets the green light, simply have your father stand with his new wife, and your mother with her new husband. This way guests will understand the relationships. Introductions All Around The receiving line is where your hosting duties as the bride and groom kick off. It'll no doubt be a whirlwind of faces, but as much as possible you should introduce your new spouse and your parents to all the guests they have not yet met. First names and the guests' relationships to you should suffice. Likewise all guests should take it upon themselves to offer this same information as introduction to attendants and family members whom they've never met as they proceed down the line; simply shake hands, offer congratulations and keep moving. The bride and groom need only accept everyone's hugs, kisses and best wishes and thank them for coming. It's that simple. And yes, you'll end up with a lot of lipstick on your cheeks, but fear not - you're allowed to make a bathroom pit stop before heading to the party. Variations on a Theme As is common nowadays, traditions such as the receiving line are ultimately open to interpretation. Depending on the size of your guest list, you may opt to greet guests in other ways. One couple we know personally dismissed guests from their seats right after the ceremony, one row at a time (although we wouldn't recommend this for gatherings of more than 150 people, or if guests have to remain seated - and suffer - through hot sun, rain, strong winds or other inclement conditions). If you have fewer than 50 guests, you might decide to turn cocktail hour into the meet-and-greet opportunity instead of a formal receiving line. Whatever you choose, the basic tenets still apply: Greet each of your guests in turn and thank them for joining you on this joyful occasion. - The Knot

by Eric Francis Aries (March 20-April 19) Self is not static. Indeed, it's about the least static element in nature. It would help if we could distinguish self-concept from self. The thing that tends to get stuck is our idea of who we're supposed to be, which has some relationship to who we were yesterday. I don't suggest you get lost in the theory of this, except to remember that what tends to seize is an idea and what tends to flow is your actual being. With Uranus entering your sign today, you can pretty much forget the past and get ready for some nonstop motion. It will help if you allow your idea to be free, so that when the actual person you are finds itself in the midst of sudden progress, you can minimize inner conflict and go with the flow of existence. You're unlikely to have any choice in the matter of whether your life takes some giant steps, though you have plenty of influence over what direction you choose.

^

Taurus (April 19-May 20) To the extent that this is a moment of inner awakening for you, it's also a moment of seeing what you've been missing. You're being presented with an inner view that may be shocking, strange or feel like something to celebrate. It will help if you remember that what you're experiencing is indeed an inner experience. Most of the people you meet every day have neither affinity for nor attraction to this thing sometimes called an inner life. If they do it's often dressed in the garb of outer life: situations, personalities, physical objects, goals, etc. There is another inner life that is attached to none of those symbols. You could think of it as the clear essence of being; as pure energy; as your sense of presence within the universe. It's what we think of as 'alive' the moment that concept has any meaning at all. To experience that on our planet at this time can be pretty shocking.

_

Gemini (May 20-June 21) One good idea will lead to the next. One interesting encounter will point the way to the next, and the two are related. You're being invited to feed your imagination on people: on their presence, what they say, and those to whom they introduce you. But don't wait around for that; don't be shy. Make your presence known, and pay attention to your environment. You're in an unusual space where your circle of friends is growing outward and reaching into unfamiliar social patterns. People you never would have expected are positioned to reach toward you. One thing you might notice is that you're no longer the weirdest person in your environment. Indeed, you may think you have some competition, but fortunately your life is more about collaboration than contest. If you keep that

perspective you're likely to make some very good friends over the Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) next few days. You're being a gem with someone you work with who may be getting on your nerves or going through a difficult emotional time. You have a way of channeling your energy into creative directions, Cancer (June 21-July 22) This is a particularly brilliant moment for your professional life. You don't need to do much except get out of your find your maximum creativity. You tend to like stability and you're own way and not send yourself your usual litany of negative or thriving on it at the moment; events may seem to conspire to draw questioning messages. The most important thing you can do is stay emotionally grounded: not stuck, but present in your feelings, even Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) as they move at their unusual current pace. You may have to assert yourself against someone close to you. This person's reluctance to speak up, live up to a commitment or respond to your needs has been a cause for concern. I would Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) As the next few days unfold, feel yourself approach a tipping point in caution you against exerting too much energy their way; a little is all a financial or partnership situation. This is a moment when the it will take. There are many other influences that are sending the balance of inertia shifts toward being a thing in motion rather than a same message in his or her life, and I assure you that this person thing at rest; toward clarity rather than the soupy fog that has feels like they're in a bit over their head. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) Your astrology offers several different images for what might be coming. One is you transform your basement into a laboratory and start working on those inventions you've been planning all these years. Or, the Cirque du Soleil arrives in town and you're the host to the fire-eaters and sword swallowers, who stay for at least three weeks; while they're living with you, they teach you all their tricks and you join their troupe and go on the road for seven years. Or you buy an old summer camp in your area and found a special program for child prodigies. In any event, expect some new energy to come into your home; reconsider what it means to feel safe in a time of rapid change. At the very least, consider redecorating, remodeling or moving to bigger digs. And if you currently live with your family, get ready to consider some much better options.

g

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) Having the life you want is suddenly no longer a matter of power or resources; it's a matter of people, and you're person one. Normally we think of success as being upwardly mobile; for you it's more about being able to extend yourself among your peers. You practice a kind of lateral success, which is another way of saying weaving community. You may have a sense that you're at the center of that community, but that's only true from a limited perspective. You're participating in a much wider cosmic project of re-weaving the human family. I am sure you've noticed how fragmented our communities are and how alienated so many people feel. I promise you, you're one of the people who feels less estranged. That's a special distinction. And you don't have to let on. Just keep weaving.

h

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20 With everything else going on in your sign (and thus your life), you might not notice that Uranus is slipping into Aries this week, ending a seven-year spell of rampant whatever-it-is that you're probably sure is not over. However, I have a question: Have you ever had one of those revelations wherein you realize the one thing you need to do is relax, cease from exerting so much effort and energy, and allow 'pure mind' to get your results? That is, to allow consciousness to be the potent activating agent that it is, and then experience the universe responding in its quantum way? I thought so! Well, it may take you a few weeks to get there. You can start by making the conscious choice to gear down, even if your life doesn't respond in 10 seconds. Obviously many things would be easier if you had no concerns about where money was supposed to come from, and if one aspect of life is poised to respond to the whole quantum mind-power thing, that's the one that's gonna happen first.

Hey all you puzzle addicts, are you ready to try something new? Picture-forming logic puzzles are the latest rage! And these two-tone colour ones are especially delicious for the artistic puzzler. No guessing required, only do what you know. Simply solve them by colouring groups of squares, based on number clues, to reveal a hidden picture. The basic rules are: 1) The numbers represent how many squares to colour in to form a group or block. 2) Leave at least one square between these blocks. 3) The order of the numbers is the order of the blocks, i.e. Top number for a column is the top block, and left-most number for a row is the left-most block.

groups or blocks. When a group is done (i.e. all 6 squares are shaded in), colour one square on each end of it with 2nd colour, and when all groups for a row are done, be sure to colour all remaining non-picture squares with 2nd colour. The 2nd colour will be the background and is necessary to help solve the puzzle. This is an amazing exercise for your brain, so try not to get discouraged, as you will become a pro in no time at all! For future reference, these instructions can be found on our website at: www.gatewaygazette.ca under “Fun Stuff”.

The number clue shown on left of row is 6, so count 6 squares from the left to right and then count 6 squares from right to left. Confidently shade in overlapping squares. Even one shaded square can lead to others. This same method can be applied when there is more than one number, remembering to allow one empty square in-between

Matt's Story: Part II

Views on Vision By Dr. Charles A. Boulet A mother (call her Kay) came in to see me regarding her son Matt and his academic troubles. Matt is almost 8 years old, in Grade 3, and has already become familiar with the insides of 4 different schools. Kay was referred

to me by Matt's pediatrician who wanted to know if there was a visual component to the child's trouble in school. I was of course more than happy to see Matt - research shows that about 90% of children with reading delays have some

sort of visual developmental delay in motor skills, perceptual skills and frequently both. We started with a history. Matt's health checked out ok, with one major exception to be mentioned later. He started to

show signs of trouble in Kindergarten - rare for most kids with reading trouble. Matt was also having trouble with the other children in class - he was new to town and had few friends from the outset, his parents had also divorced and while he gets to see his dad periodically, he very much missed his presence. Kay is now remarried and things are going well at home. While concerned, she followed the school's advice and took a wait-and-see approach. She felt that given everything Matt was dealing with at home (divorce/move), things would smooth out over time. Into Grade 1, Matt was clearly not getting along any easier at school. Falling behind in class, he felt apart from the crowd, was ostracized and judged by his peers. He began to act out, choosing to push back than to take teasing and abuse. He could not understand why people were turning on him. His teacher would soon lose patience with his frustrated outbursts and aggression towards others. Things worsened through to the end of Grade 1 when Kay decided she would appeal to the school for help. With no formal assessment in hand, the Principal informed her that Matt's

problem was psychological, possibly with attention problems (that is, ADD), and that he had violent tendencies that frankly were not appreciated at the school. The school could offer her nothing but an ongoing litany of complaints and exasperated phone calls regarding Matt and advice that she should seek help elsewhere. Kay continued to petition the school but also began to feel ignored and unwanted. Into Grade Two, Matt was more combative. The cycle of reaction and push-back from peers, teachers and staff made it increasingly more uncomfortable for Matt as the weeks and months progressed. To be sure, Matt is a very intelligent and caring child who is likely ahead of his peers in some regards - he seems very astute and direct, serious but respectful, with a longing to just have some fun. He really doesn't care for school and likes to be at home. While he has shown that he can do well at school, he has had trouble with reading and this slows him down compared to his peers. He knows this and it's bothersome. Matt is also young in his class and must work against this in the emerging social dynamics of the classroom and playground. With no regard to any possible hidden impediments to learn-

ing, Matt already has a number of reasons to feel isolated and resentful of school and to fall behind. With two months left in the year, Kay was finally too worried and too tired of fighting and moved Matt into another school. It was then determined that Matt would attend still a different school for Grade 3. Education history completed, it was time to look at medical issues that might be influencing Matt's reading and learning. Of prime concern is that Matt, at not quite yet 8 years of age, is depressed has been prescribed antidepressants. He doesn't feel he could ever be happy. Kay, as you might expect, is beside herself with worry and guilt. Next was the initial general eye exam, followed by more detailed testing of Matt's visual skills. I expect to find some sort of visual control problem and mild or moderate glasses prescription present in children with reading and learning trouble, but I didn't expect what I found with Matt. To be continued…... Dr. Boulet is an optometrist and owner-operator of Diamond Valley Vision Care in Black Diamond (403-933-5552 or info@dvvc.ca.) He is also a former high school teacher and continues to work with children who have trouble learning.

Rein in Spending with Debt Management By Wayne Coristine

Money Mentors is a not-for-profit credit counselling organization that is dedicated to educating Albertans on debt resolution, the wise use of credit and unbiased personal money coaching. Credit cards are not cash You should try to use credit cards only for items you can pay in full when you get your statement. Just because your limit may be $5,000, it doesn't mean you have $5,000. If you buy something on sale with your credit card but don't pay it off quickly, the interest charge each month could end up costing you more than the regular price. “If you have to carry a balance, avoid only making the minimum payment,” says Tracy Watson, Director of Communications at Money Mentors. “At 18% interest, it would take twelve and a half years with a $200 monthly payment to clear up a $5,000 balance…and that's without making any new purchases. On top of that, you'd end up paying over $2,900 in interest, which more than cancels out the deals at the sales counter.” More on Debt Management in the next issue.

Foothills of the Future

By Todd Curran

Land owners met at the High River Heritage Inn on March 1st, for a Southern Foothills Community Stewardship Initiative forum. “This is a large-scale input process to get a sense of the public's needs and interest in maintaining the landscape,” says Initiative project manager Carole Stark. After gathering information on residents' priorities for land use and management, the Initiative aims to give the priorities a voice heard by the municipalities and provincial government. “We want to achieve people's wants with broad strategies, recommendations and ecological benefits,” Carole says. Representatives from local conservation groups also attended the forum, particularly interested in the Initiative's goal of protecting the long-term health of southern Foothills watersheds and landscape. To date, the forums have indicated a public interest in valuing water quality and quantity, connected landscapes and soil. Effective governance that involves and is accountable to local citizens ranked as the highest want among management values, just ahead of land and watershed planning that reflects local needs and priorities. Tax Tips “The Man” Doesn't Want You To Know Coming straight from an industry professional, these Tax Tips offer the best ways to lower your taxes LEGALLY. Black Diamond accountant and bookkeeper Darlene Cox of Stevenson Consulting explains that tax-free savings accounts accumulate interest that isn't taxed. “An investment paying you out in interest is getting heavily taxed,” she says. “I recommend investments that yield capital gains. Tax only applies to half of your gain while the other half remains untaxed. Investments that pay in dividends are also taxed far less than interest.” If you've acquired capital gains this year, consider selling assets with an

accrued loss to offset the gains. You may also want to realize the loss if you've had capital gains in the last three years that weren't offset by your capital gains exemption. There are also many ways to share your tax burden with others in your family. For seniors receiving pension or Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) payments, pension income splitting between spouses means you can now cut your tax bill and potentially reduce the impact of the Old Age Security (OAS) clawback! For those with investment assets, and family members taxed at lower rates there are many strategies such as a prescribed rate loan that can help share the tax burden. The key is to know when income splitting is legally possible.
