a letter from the prime minister

I am pleased to extend my warmest greetings to everyone taking part in the 2018 Whistler Pride and Ski Festival. This annual event, featuring a wide range of sporting, cultural and social activities, is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate diversity in the community. As a nation, we have made great strides in securing recognition and legal rights for the LGBTQ2 community, and we will continue to work toward ensuring that all Canadians are treated with equality and respect.

The Rt. Hon. Justin P. J. Trudeau, P.C., M.P. Prime Minister of Canada

I would like to commend the organizers and many volunteers of the Whistler Pride and Ski Festival for their hard work in bringing this wonderful event to the community. Your efforts to support and promote unity and inclusion, and to foster a greater awareness of sexual and gender diversity, are helping to create a better Canada for us all. Please accept my best wishes for a most memorable experience. Sincerely,

WhistlerPRIDE 2018 5

a letter from the premier As Premier of the Province of British Columbia, I am pleased to welcome you all to the 26th Annual Whistler Pride and Ski Festival (WPSF) here in North America’s premiere mountain resort.

Honourable John Horgan Premier of British Columbia

This festival is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate with our friends in the LGBTQ2S community and mark the great strides made towards equality in our society. As we celebrate together, we must resolve to continue the fight against inequality and discrimination in all its forms. Our government is committed to building a better British Columbia that is open and welcoming to everyone, where people can build their lives and their futures no matter their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. I would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the organizers, sponsors, and volunteers who continue to make this festival the success that it is. This year promises to be joyful and exciting, and I wish you all a wonderful and memorable experience.

a letter from the mayor On behalf of the Resort Municipality of Whistler, welcome to the 26th annual Whistler Pride and Ski Festival from January 21 to 28, 2018. Congratulations on over a quarter century of celebrating diversity and inclusion in our mountain resort community. The iconic festival is a highlight on Whistler’s winter event calendar, attracting guests from British Columbia, Canada, America, Europe, Australia and beyond! Earlier this year, Whistler unveiled its first rainbow crosswalks on Main Street as a vibrant symbol of pride in our community. It is important to us that Whistler is a safe, desirable and welcoming place to live and visit year-round and we hope that this colourful infrastructure will be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.

Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden Resort Municipality of Whistler

The Resort Municipality of Whistler is pleased to support the Whistler Pride and Ski Festival though tourism funding from the Province of British Columbia. This year, our investment is in Whistler Pride’s Night of Comedy. We hope you enjoy the festival and have time to experience much of what Whistler has to offer – from the great variety of mountain terrain for skiing and snowboarding, to cross-country trails, skating, and even sliding sports, as well as the variety of spas, restaurants, pubs, shops and entertainment throughout the Village. Whistler was the proud Host Mountain Resort for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and partnered with Whistler Pride and Ski Festival for the first Olympic Pride House in 2010. I encourage you to have your own Olympic experience: cross-country ski at Whistler Olympic Park, watch or try sliding sports at the Whistler Sliding Centre, or go ice skating at Whistler Olympic Plaza in the heart of Whistler Village. Enjoy your visit! Regards,

A video of a man surviving an avalanche in Whistler’s backcountry went viral last week, prompting a flurry of discussion about the importance of being prepared before heading out of bounds. Tom Oye was snowboarding in the Brandywine backcountry on Wednesday (Jan. 11), when the snow cracked underneath him, quickly dissolving into a fullblown avalanche. Oye was equipped with an avalanche airbag that he triggered immediately. After

a harrowing tumble, he arrived at the bottom of the slope unharmed and on top of the snow. “Not how I planned on starting my morning… stay safe out there kids,” he captioned the video, posted to Facebook. So far, the stunning footage has received over nine million views and made international headlines. The video serves as a good opportunity to speak about avalanche safety, said Avalanche Canada’s warning service manager, Karl Klassen. “There were a bunch of

faq Q ARE THERE ANY ADDITIONAL PERKS TO MY FULL WEEK OR WEEKEND PASS? A Yes, not only did you save some on the bundle pass, you get to use the express entry line at some of the busiest events and you have the flexibility of doing as much or as little as you want! It’s sort of like a Season Pass. You can also flash your pass to our retail partners and save or get a special gift! Q ARE THERE GAY SKI/SNOWBOARD GUIDES FOR ALL LEVELS OF SKIERS/ RIDERS? A Yes, we have ski guides available every day for all levels of skiers & riders so come up and ski/ ride with your level group. There are also lesbian led groups! Q ARE TICKETS TRANSFERABLE OR REFUNDABLE? A Regrettably, no. Whistler Pride recommends buying Travel Medical and Trip Cancellation / Interruption insurance Q MY PARTNER AND I ARE LOOKING TO GET MARRIED. CAN WE DO THIS WHILE AT WHISTLER PRIDE? A Yes, we have several options available for you; just contact us at guest services. Q WHAT ARE OUR OPTIONS TO GET BACK TO VANCOUVER? A We have several options for you, visit our website under “Plan Your Trip” or see us at guest services. Q IS IT TOO LATE TO VOLUNTEER? A No, come on down to the guest services suite and talk with our Volunteer Manager, Karen or one of our volunteer leads. Q WHAT CAN I DO IF I DO NOT SKI OR SNOWBOARD? WILL I BE BORED? A There are hundreds of things for you to do and you will not be bored! Here are a couple of examples: Sight See on Whistler & Blackcomb – Ride the Whistler Village Gondola and then take the Peak 2 Peak Gondola for a bird’s eye view of these massive mountains, take in one of the culinary or wellness seminars, go dog sledding or fly through the forest like a Jedi Knight or Indiana Jones with SuperFly Ziplines or luxuriate in one of the spas. Stop by our guest services desk for more ideas and suggestions!

faq Q WHEN IS WHISTLER PRIDE 2019? A January 20-27, 2019 - the host hotel is the Aava Whistler. Remember to book by August 30, 2018 for the best deal. Next deadline is Nov. 15th. Q WHY SHOULD WE BOOK THROUGH YOUR OFFICIAL BOOKING CHANNEL? A This is one of the only tools we have available to give accurate numbers to our resort partners in the success of the festival and ensure the continued value we are able to give to you, the consumer. The alternative to this is diminished support as it is unclear who is actually staying for the festival which may result in higher future costs and ties our hands as organizers what we can ask for in the future. There is the lowest price guarantee so you can be assured you are getting the best rate available. Q WHY DOES WHISTLER PRIDE LIMIT CAPACITY AND VENUE HOURS? A British Columbia has some of the most strict liquor laws in North America. Every year Whistler Pride has to apply and negotiate with the various government bodies which set limits to capacity, venue usage, hours of operation and type of entertainment. Q WHY ARE THE LIQUOR PRICES SO EXPENSIVE? A The resort and the government of British Columbia sets a minimum price drinks are allowed to be sold at. Price includes all taxes. Q WHY DO WE HAVE TO PAY TO GO TO THE APRÈS SKI? A Admission for the Après Ski events helps to pay for the complimentary ski/snowboard program as well as fund some of the other festival costs. The conference centre is still currently the only venue large enough to accommodate our group. The Après ski also provides an opportunity for some of our community members to become involved with the festival to raise awareness about their organization while raising funds.

note to skiers & riders All skiers/riders of all abilities are invited to join this complimentary service and be guided safely around the mountains. It is a great way to meet new people! Please allow at least 45 minutes from the village to the designated meeting spot.

Uploading tip: All of Whistler Blackcomb’s RFID scanners will be located on your left hand side as you approach the lift. It is important that you keep your Access Card on the left hand side of your body. A pocket on your jacket is ideal given the height of the scanner. Keep your Access Card away from your cell phone or any aluminum, as it may interfere with the RFID chip.
