NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
“INSPIRATION
IS FOR AMATEURS. THE REST OF US JUST SHOW UP AND GET TO WORK.”
~ Chuck Close
This has always been one of my favorite quotes - it sums up perfectly the practical side of creativity, the nuts and bolts of the work we do in the theatre. Most days, inspiration seems a luxury we cannot afford.
There’s no argument that Patsy Cline was a practical gal, making simple music and even simpler words come alive by just “getting to work.” But there’s no denying that there was some kind of alchemy at work there too - her voice just ‘gets’ to you. It is undeniable. Fifty-seven years after her death that voice remains one of the most recognizable in 100 years of recording history.
So what’s the perfect recipe for showcasing the work of this singular artist? First and foremost it’s finding fellow artists that share Patsy’s process, who “show up and get to work.” Designers Will Spratt, Erin Miner, Gabs Gutierrez, and Jesse Munro have come together to strike the perfect balance between history and memory (which are never the same thing).
Second, it requires utilizing musicians who fully grasp the nuance and detail of Patsy’s music, authentically re-creating her sound. Musical Director Philip King and our terrific band create an audio scrapbook that takes us on a musical journey of both live performance and recollection.
And third - finding the absolute perfect two actors to embody the roles of Louise and Patsy. It’s hard for actors to play historical characters that live in the glow of the collective memory of the audience. But that’s what this show requires, and I couldn’t ask for more skilled and generous actors than Lucy Carney and Keisha Gill McNair.
I have so enjoyed watching this show take shape and can’t wait to share it with all of you! For in fact, it’s you that actually are our inspiration, the reason we all “show up and get to work.”
Katrina Ploof, Director
