DEVELOPMENT

Linda Dodge, Director of Development

THINGS ARE LOOKING UP: BIRDS ARE ON THE HORIZON! It sure doesn’t feel like it, but spring will soon be in the air, and we will be welcoming the Birdhouse Display and Silent Auction once again. This annual event will feature handcrafted birdhouses from the woodshop and items of a spring/bird theme from the GSV quilters, crafters, cross-stitchers and the Art Guild. New this year- with COVID recommendations in place, we are still limiting the number of people gathering safely in one space, as well as visitors from off-campus. As a result, we will host both the silent auction, which residents are accustomed to, in the Village Square Indoor Park, and an online auction for residents and off-campus people. There will be a convenient method directing the public to the online auction so they can participate in the fundraising event for the Benevolent Fund. Stay tuned for the link and auction information. Both auctions will begin January 30 and bidding will close at 5pm on Friday, February 26. The unique items in the silent auction make nice, one-of-a-kind gifts to usher in the start of spring. Thank you to the Wood Shop members, quilters, and other talented residents who have created and donated items to raise money for the Benevolent Fund.

BLUEBIRD SOCIETY PRESENTATION FEBRUARY 8, MONDAY 2PM, CHAPEL & GSV-TV CHANNEL 956

Dr. Dean Rust, President of the Bluebird Society of PA, will deliver a presentation on the ecology and management of the eastern bluebird. Dean brings with him a wealth of knowledge, but also a beautiful display of photography that will have you dreaming of spring. Limited Seating. Sign up to attend at Resident Services.

DO YOU HAVE SUGGESTIONS FOR 2021 EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS? Each year the Development Office hosts several educational sessions either in person or on CATIE. Examples of topics from past years include Charitable Gift Annuities, Donor Advised Funds, Qualified Charitable Distributions from IRAs and other topics. Sessions provide information that can help save taxes, with legacy gift planning, etc. Please contact Linda Dodge (6215) if you have suggestions for topics to be considered in 2021.

Often people tell us, “After we moved to Garden Spot Village, we realized it wasn’t about the house we moved to, it was the community!” If you have a friend or family member who is waiting to move to Garden Spot Village and they want to move sooner rather than later, we have a few Sycamore Springs homes still available, with move in dates in spring 2021. The current wait time for a cottage and carriage house at Garden Spot Village is three to five years. So, the opportunities for a quick move are running out! MORE MOVIES THAT MOVE US FEBRUARY 3, 10, 17 & 24, WEDNESDAYS 9:30AM, CHAPEL

Recent events have helped us to become more aware of, and perhaps immersed in, the extent of racial inequality in our country. Beginning with a video presentation in late August, followed by book groups in September and October, and a series of Movies That Move Us from Life Enrichment through January, many GSV residents have been able to learn and grow in their understandings of the experiences of Black people in the United States. Those who participated in the discussions have been able to learn and grow in their understandings of being White. Revelatory is not too strong a word for some of what came about in those readings and small groups. In February, we will again have several opportunities to learn about the Black experience as we acknowledge Black History Month and our own need to come to terms with our places and parts in history, Black or White. Four films will be shown on Wednesday mornings with time available at the end for conversation. These will be held in the Chapel with limited seating. Please be sure to sign up at Resident Services. You will want to note the times as the films vary in length. The schedule appears elsewhere in the Garden Variety. We are called to a deeper, God-orientation and self-knowledge regarding our relationships with people of color. Where better to begin than learning their history, and ours, and helping each other along the way.

Featured Movies: 2/3—Just Mercy | 2/10—Amistad | 2/17—Good Trouble | 2/24—I am Not Your Negro LIMITED SEATING. SIGN UP AT RESIDENT SERVICES For all events, masks and social distancing required. Schedule subject to change. Watch CATIE for updates.

Fall Prevention Tip of the Month – Monitor your Blood Pressure

Maintaining a normal blood pressure is an important part of fall prevention. If you notice dizziness, lightheadedness or blurred vision, ask your doctor if it could be related to an abnormal blood pressure. Keeping hydrated, avoiding strenuous activity during hot weather, and giving your body time to adjust when changing positions (sitting on the side of the bed for a few minutes, for instance, before standing) are all helpful ways for preventing a sudden drop in blood pressure that may cause fainting. Taking your blood pressure regularly is also a good plan in being aware of any deviation from your normal numbers. See information below for help in getting your blood pressure taken by a nurse.

Weekly Blood Pressure Clinic

Continuous Home Care, a medical home health agency new to our campus, is providing an RN for the BP/Ask-a-nurse clinic. The clinic is located in Garden West, ground floor (next to the Wood Shop, across from the Train Room). A nurse is available every Monday, 9-11 am for any or all of the following: taking your blood pressure, checking your weight on the doctor’s scale, or answering simple medical questions. There is no charge for this drop-in service. Masks and social distancing are required for all visiting the clinic.

February, the month we remember love! The coaster, at a whopping cost of $2.50, was my best purchase of 2020. On a tough day it was the only item in a local gift shop that held any appeal. I brought it home, propped it against the flower provided by our church when my father passed away (Sept 2020), and have often been challenged to live up to the statements: Love is spoken here, Joy is chosen here, Grace is given here.

The picture above is from my kitchen island: a peace lily and a coaster.

May we choose well in 2021, so very much depends on our choices.

COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHT

Colleen Musselman, Director of Life Enrichment

Tony der Kinderen, 2021 Cottage Council President Ruth Buehler, 2021 Apartment Council President

Resident Councils written Abigail O’Neill, GSV Intern

In March of 1997, a group of residents formed a council to work alongside Garden Spot Village administration and represent the residents. With constant growth in the Garden Spot Village community and, in order to fully represent all of Garden Spot Village’s residents, what was once a single council, developed into two separate groups: an Apartment Council and a Cottage Council. Both councils participate in the Pennsylvania Alliance of Retirement Community Residents (PARCR), which is an organization of residents living in non-profit communities, involved in governance. Apartment Council: The Apartment Council meets twice a month on both the first and second Mondays. The first meeting is used to set an agenda for the public meeting that follows a week later. The council itself is run by 12 members and presently led by President Ruth Buehler. Ruth says, “We are here to serve,” adding, “our purpose is to serve as a liaison between the residents and Garden Spot Village administration.” The council shares areas of concern with Garden Spot Village administration including questions about upgrades, fire code requirements, and any other issues that affect the community. Additionally, the Apartment Council invites non-administrative staff members to attend one public meeting each month. The Apartment Council also operates with committees for certain tasks. For example, the nominating committee is in charge of the recruitment of new members. After one year of residence at Garden Spot Village, anyone can submit their name to serve on the council for three consecutive years. Cottage Council: With similar operations and bylaws to the Apartment Council, the Cottage Council serves as an integral part of the community to serve its residents. The Cottage Council strives to be an inclusive group by incorporating residents from each neighborhood of Garden Spot Village in its nominations. Similar to the Apartment Council, the Cottage Council strives to connect with residents and address their concerns at a higher level. With 12 members, the current council recently installed president, Tony der Kinderen, on January 5. Tony says, “The Cottage Council is a liaison between cottage residents and the administration. The Council, although having no executive authority, meets monthly with administration to present questions, concerns, recommendations and other issues relevant to Cottage/Carriage House and Sycamore Springs life. The Council continues to follow-up on issues until a conclusion has been reached.” We are grateful for both councils and their dedication to improving life at Garden Spot Village!

SHOP HOURS: The Share & Care is open to residents Monday through Friday, 10am-4pm and Saturday for public only, 10am-2pm. All proceeds from Share and Care support the Benevolent Fund.

Flower Deliveries written Abigail O’Neill, GSV Intern

On any given Thursday, you may see volunteers delivering beautifully arranged flowers throughout the campus, sharing a smile, even behind the mask. Through Volunteer Services, Garden Spot Village has been blessed with incredible residents who give their time to create those smiles. During the COVID shutdown, Volunteer Services introduced a new opportunity for people to bless their friends and neighbors at Garden Spot Village. With a simple phone call to Volunteer Services by noon on any given Tuesday, you can order flowers, to be delivered that Thursday with a handwritten note. Volunteer and Garden Spot resident John Clough, who delivered flowers through 2020, didn’t stop with a simple delivery. John says, “I shared with each person receiving the flowers how very special they were in the eyes of the person giving them the flowers,” adding, “I always ended up including the Lord Jesus Christ as being one of those special giving beings that thought they were very special in the eyes of their Lord!” Resident and Volunteer, Barry Schuliger, explained that “Typical reactions from residents are surprise and appreciation. It brings a smile to their face.” Barry continued, saying “They can’t believe anyone would take the time to remember their birthday, illness, or operation.” Barry also explained that his “favorite part of the job is seeing people’s reactions and hearing comments like ‘This made my day’ and ‘I will enjoy them for several days.'" Recently, Dee and Cal Homan started delivering the flower arrangements. Dee says, “I enjoy bringing cheer to my neighbors by delivering flowers.” Both John and Barry encourage other residents to become active with volunteer opportunities in the community. If you are interested in volunteering at Garden Spot Village, please contact the Volunteer Office. To cheer a friend during these cold winter days or bless a friend at Valentine’s day, order a flower arrangement for $15 (including tax and charged to your prox card) by calling Volunteer Services at (6098).

Admittedly, it is far from realistic, but the naturalistic designs fit beautifully into the landscape. We will learn about his life from being born into a coal miner’s family to being offered a knighthood and international fame and wealth.

February 1-28 The Main Street Art Gallery, a month-long display.
