DEVELOPMENT

Linda Dodge, Director of Development

THANK YOU FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF OTHERS Happy New Year! Residents at Garden Spot Village bless their neighbors because of their passion to make a difference in the lives of others. As we begin 2021, I want to express my sincere thanks to you for the gifts that have been given to Garden Spot Village this past year for the Benevolent Fund, the Woodshop Campaign, and others. The year 2020 was a year like we have never seen before because of Covid, yet you continued to make gifts from your heart. We have been seeing more residents take advantage of using the Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from an IRA to make their gifts while benefitting from significant tax savings. Last year the Legacy Society continued to grow as residents put Garden Spot Village in their will, named GSV the beneficiary of an IRA, or completed applications for Charitable Gift Annuities. Your volunteer time for Development activities such as Harvest Week, the Golf Tournament, the Bird House Silent Auction and the Angel Tree project helped raise funds for the Benevolent Fund. These events would not be possible without your volunteer time. Significant funds for the Benevolent Fund were also raised because of the many hours of volunteer time given to the Share and Care Shop and the Linden Store. Handcrafted items created with much love have also raised money to help those receiving benevolent assistance. Please know that I greatly appreciate how God touches your hearts so that you are called to make donations and volunteer, making a difference in the lives of others. You certainly help fulfill our mission which is “We enrich the lives of older adults as an expression of Christ’s love.” Wishing you a new year filled with happiness, love and good health. God Bless You.

Thank you for your generosity! With your support during our partnership launch with Missions of Hope International (MOHI) we have…

• 13 children that are now being sponsored by Garden Spot residents and team members

• raised $4,987towards re-opening the Pangani school in January

• sold $720 of fair-trade items at the two

pop-up markets and 100% of the proceeds from the market will go to MOHI

Our partnership launch may be over, but you can still support MOHI by sponsoring a child (choose Pangani School in the dropdown menu) or by giving a one-time gift online at give.mohiafrica.org. Be on the lookout for a video message from the Kamau’s, MOHI’s founders, at the February Towne Meeting, MyGSV or on CATIE!

WOMEN IN COMMUNITY JANUARY 12 & 26, TUESDAY 9AM, CONCORD ROOM

Women of GSV are invited to a gathering in the Concord Room on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month from 9-10am. Each month will bring a different theme. Due to limited seating (15) during our pandemic response, please attend only one session per month to leave room for all interested in attending. If you’d like your name to be added when additional seating becomes available, please call Chaplain Karyn (6235). She will be in touch with you after final counts are made. This month, the meeting dates will be January 12 and 26. The focus of our time together will be peace. Please bring an item (one that preferably fits in your hand) that represents how “peace” is significant or present in your life right now. There will be a light breakfast for your body, a scripture-focused meditation for your soul by Chaplain Karyn and a time for community, as we listen and share. Sign up at Resident Services.

LECTIO DIVINA, PRAYER WORKSHOP JANUARY 7, THURSDAY 11AM, GARDEN TOWERS

During this pandemic, your prayer life — among other things — may have been disrupted. We’ve had to find different ways of praying without in-person community in order to support our faith life. The traditional monastic practice of Lectio Divina is a good way to provide a way to enter into sacred Scripture as a living word for our time. The focus of Lectio Divina is not a critical analysis of sacred text, but rather a more personal way of experiencing the word through contemplation and reflection. The traditional practice of Lectio Divina has 4 parts: Lectio (read), Meditatio (meditate), Oratio (pray) and Contemplatio (contemplate). Whether you are already familiar or need to learn more, please join Chaplain Karyn, SaraJane Munshower and Evelyn Hershey for a Lectio Divina workshop. Discover or renew a contemplative way to focus on scripture in our non-conversational Bible Study. Sign up at Resident Services. For all events, masks and social is distancing required. Schedule subject to change. Watch CATIE for updates.

Personal Mobility Device Safety

Scooter and electric wheelchairs are wonderful devices that assist those unable to ambulate long distances on their own in order to enjoy continued independence. If you are considering purchasing a device, consult your primary care doctor and an occupational therapist prior to making your purchase for guidance on the piece or equipment best suited for your needs and one you will be able to safely operate. If you already own a PMD, please keep the following guidelines in mind for your own safety and the safety of your friends and neighbors: • OT training on your device is highly recommended • Inside the building, drive in the middle of the hallway allowing pedestrians to utilize handrails on both sides of the hallway. Remember, pedestrians always have the right of way and your vehicle must be driven at a slow walking speed (1.5 to 3 mph). Additional caution is expected when approaching corners, doorways or entering/exiting elevators • Outside the building, you may use your device on walkways but not on roadways. Remember, pedestrians always have the right of way. Cross only at crosswalks, operate at a slow speed and using a visible safety flag is recommended • Parking of your device is prohibited in hallways or any area that obstructs doorways, handrail usages, or access to fire equipment. Park in designated areas only. • Liability insurance is strongly encouraged and can be obtained through an addendum to your homeowner/ rental content or automobile insurance policy. You assume all risks and liability related to your PMD. • Unsafe operation of a PMD in a way that jeopardizes your safety as the operator or other’s safety may result in a required assessment of cognitive processing, visual motor/perceptual function and operational mobility by nursing, social services and therapy to determine if additional safety training is needed or whether loss of driving privileges would be warranted. Q. Who always has the right of way, a person on a PMD or a pedestrian? A. A pedestrian

ANNUAL JANUARY REMINDER Review Emergency Sheets in your master bathroom medicine cabinet

Take a few minutes to review the crucial information on your emergency sheets. Have there been changes to your medication list, diagnosis list, doctors, or specialists? How about changes to phone numbers or addresses of those listed as contacts? • If you are married, consider adding your spouse as a contact! This often gets overlooked but those working in an Emergency Department don’t know you and may be unaware you are married. Eliminate the potential of your spouse not being called in an emergency by adding the name to your contact list. Make changes on one copy, deliver the changes to Social Services. We will update your electronic records and send you three revised copies via campus mail.

UPRIGHT – Fall Prevention Tip of the Month

Throw rugs may add a touch of color to a home’s décor but it is important to note that they also create a tripping hazard. According to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, an estimated 37,991 adults age 65 years or older annually were treated in U.S. Emergency Departments for falls associated with carpets (54.2%) or throw rugs (45.8%). Consider removing loose throw rugs and repairing carpets with a buckle or damaged edge in order to have a safer home environment.

Providing opportunities for adults to GO out into our community, DO the thing that is in front of us, HELP others and make a difference.

COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHT

Colleen Musselman, Director of Life Enrichment

Quilts of Valor written Abigail O’Neill, GSV Intern

For years, the Garden Spot Village Quilters have devoted their time to better the culture of our community and create beautiful pieces. In addition to their stunning work, the club is known for its continuous sales donations to the Benevolent Fund. This year, a new idea sparked a chance to expand their service outside of the community. Last February, the idea to get involved in the Quilts of Valor project was presented to the group of nearly 40 women. This January, the Garden Spot Village Quilters will use their stunning work to impact the lives of others. A Quilt of Valor serves as a “thank you” to Service Members and Veterans that have been touched by war. This project has been impacting the lives of veterans since the war in Iraq. With the project, donated quilts are awarded to veterans and service members as they move on from their time in the military. With great excitement, Sally Rapp and Sally Mittelstadt decided to co-chair the project. The group plans to send two quilts to the organization in order to honor our country’s veterans. With one of the quilts already in the works, the group plans to have a “sew day” on January 30, from 9am-4pm. Sally Mittlestadt explained that the Quilters elected to create a quilt with a Carpenter Star motif. This design was selected because, “a simple pattern gives everyone a chance to get involved,” Sally Mittlestadt says. The group will even have games and puzzles for downtime to increase connections and inclusivity. Sally Rapp elaborated on the group’s excitement for the project saying, “It gives us a chance for outreach and exposure to our great community.” Creating the stunning quilts is no easy task. The process all starts with piecing, which will be done in the Gardens West Conference Room. With great attention to detail, the group creates a layout and top for the quilt. Once assembled, the soon-to-be quilt leaves the community and is sent to the long arm quilter. The long arm quilter will take the club’s top and creatively embellish it with machine quilting. After this process is completed, the quilt will come back to Garden Spot Village for final touches. After the quilts are completed, the club will send their two finished pieces to the Quilt of Valor Foundation, where the final products will be awarded to a service member or veteran. From shipping to fabric costs, the expenses for this project are all coming from the Garden Spot Village Quilters. During the entirety of the creative process, the Quilters are accepting donations to cover the costs of the project. Any additional donations will be sent to the Quilt of Valor Foundation to continue its service work.

VOLUNTEER SERVICES

Daryl Groff, Director of Volunteer Services

Mary Alice Black: The Mailroom written Abigail O’Neill, GSV Intern

Seventeen years ago, Mary Alice Black and her husband, Harry, moved into a carriage home at Garden Spot Village. Mary Alice was quick to get involved in the abundant opportunities in the community and quickly found her niche in the mailroom. She started by shadowing and training in the apartment wings, just as every other volunteer does. In this role, those sorting make sure that the pieces of mail get to each resident in the apartments. Mary Alice explained that no two apartment buildings are the same and there is something special about each one. Seeing that working in the apartment wings is a great starter position, the next step up is the main sorters. The main sorters work hard to ensure that each piece of mail gets sent to the right apartment wing or living area. Mary Alice estimated that this role takes an hour each day, but the fun is worth the time. With many years of experience in the mailroom, Mary Alice and five other volunteers fill the roles of coordinators. Within the role, each coordinator clocks approximatly four hours during their volunteer days. Mary Alice loves to meet new people during her time in the mailroom. She explained that they are always looking for new people to get involved and join the family. Each day, there are 14 volunteers working the process that serves nearly 500 people and works with nearly 1200 pieces of mail on a busy day. Mary Alice says, “It’s a wonderful group of people in the mailroom and people are really appreciative of our service.” Mary Alice went on to explain the growth of the mail process. What simply started in the main building and apartment complexes has now expanded to cottages and carriage homes through in house mail every Friday. Now looking forward to the newest additions to our community, the mailroom will expand its reach even further into Sycamore Springs and Meadow View memory support. In addition to the group’s growth over the years, 2020 has given the mailroom new opportunities. Mary Alice elaborated on their abundance of packages and forwarding mail throughout the ongoing pandemic. In forwarding mail, the volunteers prepare the mail for the exterior mail deliveries to help connect families and residents during these challenging times. Mary Alice encourages anyone who is interested in the mailroom to meet with Volunteer Services to get involved because “we do have a good time in the mailroom."

WELLNESS

Lauren Graber, Director of Wellness

BEGINNING A NEW YEAR inspired by Charlie Chaplain

Charlie Chaplin, the single most important artist produced by the cinema and certainly its most extraordinary performer, lived to the age of 88. He left us with 4 reflective statements: 1. Nothing is forever in this world, not even our problems. 2. I love walking in the rain because no one can see my tears. 3. The most lost day in life, is the day we don't laugh. 4. Six best doctors in the world...: The Sun, Rest, Exercise, Diet, Self-respect and Friends. Stick to them at all stages of your life and enjoy a healthy life... If you see the moon, you will see the beauty of God. If you see the sun, you will see the power of God. If you see a mirror, you will see God’s best creation. So believe it. We are all tourists, God is our travel agent who has already identified our routes, bookings and destinations... trust him and enjoy life. Life is just a journey! Therefore, live today! Tomorrow may not be.
