CAMPUS SERVICES Scott Ruth, Director of Campus Services HELLO, RESIDENTS AND READERS! By publication time, I will have been blessed to have completed my first full year at Garden Spot Village. Thanks so much to all of you for making year one a truly enjoyable experience! The warm and welcoming atmosphere around Garden Spot Village is amazing. It was far from a “normal” year, however! The COVID pandemic turned daily routines upside down. Events were canceled. Cottages were constructed. Meadow View Memory Support was completed. We had the hottest July on record, and then the tropics started sending massive amounts of moisture. The Campus Services Team weathered it all pretty well. One bright spot was the ability to power wash nearly 100 cottages and patios this summer using Mr. Windows Cleaning Services. Seth Schrott and his staff did an amazing job for us. We hope to have them back in 2021 to begin a rotating cycle of outdoor cottage cleaning. Another area, that we heard loud and clear, that needs some improvement is the cottage and carriage house mulching schedule. Please know that we are working very diligently on options to have that schedule dramatically altered in 2021. Stay tuned for further details, but early inquiries have been favorable! September will likely be peak season for the Spotted Lantern Fly (SLF) in the Lancaster County area. Campus Services did apply a basal bark treatment to all the red maple trees in the landscaped areas around campus in late July. This insecticide treatment will help reduce the adult population of the SLF this fall, in turn, helping to reduce the overall population next year, as well. •

If you find SLF in your landscape, avoid overreacting. To date, SLF has not killed valuable landscape trees. However, large numbers of SLF feeding for several months is known to adversely affect the ability of a tree to photosynthesize and produce sugar (energy) from sunlight. Researchers are working to better understand how much damage SLF can do to trees.

The quote above is from the Penn State Extension website. Over 1,110 articles exist on the website, providing an overwhelming amount of information. Campus Services would like to stress the “avoid overreacting” comment in their article. The SLF is really more of a short term nuisance than a plant destroying pest in our landscape setting. We are hopeful that the population will begin declining over the next year or two. Summer / Fall pruning will continue through the month of September, along with shrub replacements and small landscape renovation projects scattered around the campus. As always, it is our pleasure to provide any service we can for you in order to make your life at Garden Spot Village enriching and enjoyable! PUBLISHER Garden Spot Village

Sincerely, Scott Ruth & the Campus Services Team

PREPLANNING FOR END OF LIFE EDUCATIONAL SESSION Recently four speakers gathered again to record the Preplanning for End of Life educational session to help residents with planning. This time though, instead of talking to a group of attendees in the Chapel, because of COVID-19, the speakers recorded the session for residents to watch on CATIE. Since the first 2012 session, more than 300 residents have participated, giving positive feedback. This new offering went live on CATIE at the end of August. Each time the session is offered, a three-ring notebook with spreadsheets and other helpful information is available for $5pp. Please contact Janine Ziegler (6288) if you wish to purchase a notebook. Losing a loved one is difficult for all of us. Planning in advance can be very helpful.

SPEAKERS:

Duane Tice, Resident Learn from a resident why it is important to preplan. During the presentation you will learn about the type of helpful information you should be placing in the notebooks, such as family members, advisors, financial information, health professionals, etc. Chet Yoder, Director of Pastoral Services Learn about the importance of end-of-life planning and why you should plan a service for your loved one. In addition, other topics will include obituary information, memorial service planning and who should have a copy of your directive. Fred Groff, Groff High Eckenroth Funeral Home and Beck Funeral Home Learn about preplanning for life’s final journey, the process with funeral directors and what services you can expect from your funeral director. He will share examples of decisions that need to be made for a traditional funeral or cremation and, how to plan for a memorial Service or Celebration of Life. Learn also how to personalize and preplan. Linda Dodge, Director of Development Learn about the application process for the Legacy Garden and how loved ones can be remembered with trees, benches, bricks and other ways. Leaving a legacy will also be discussed.

Take a walk through the Memorial Garden to see (and hear) the beautiful new fountain that was added. To learn more about the Memorial Garden, please contact Allison Cuthie (6153) or Linda Dodge (6215).

Schedule subject to change. Watch CATIE for updates.

DINING SERVICES Christy Turner, Sodexo, General Manager

CHICKEN BBQ Wednesday, September 9, 3pm – 5:45pm Pick up in the Concord Room or Parking Lot #5 ½ BBQ Chicken | Baked Potato | Cole Slaw | Roll with Butter | Cupcake | Bottle of Water $11.75 Per Meal - Meal Plan Discounts will be applied Pre-Sale Tickets sold in the Harvest Table and Refresh Wednesday, September 2 through Monday, September 7

THE COMMUNITY MEAL—a collaboration between CrossNet Ministries and Garden Spot Village—has come a long way since its first rendition. Then, a team of 23 volunteers served 54 members of the local community. Now, the meal serves as many as 370 people in its current iteration. Since March, the meal has been served as take-out due to COVID-19 restrictions, and the usual average of 150 people has increased exponentially. Normally, the event is a sit-down affair with conversation and fellowship. “The real draw for many of our guests is an opportunity to enjoy a good meal in fellowship with others,” says Don Aldrich, a Garden Spot Village resident since 2016. “Many friends invite friends. Many of our guests live alone, so this is an opportunity to be with other people.” In 2017, Chaplain Chet Yoder asked Don and his wife Lois if they would be interested in starting a new community outreach with Fred and Eileen Eck. The two couples observed community meals at several area churches in order to get an idea as to how Garden Spot’s outreach should look. After planning with Garden Spot’s staff and the Sodexo team, as well as CrossNet employees, the group launched the first community meal in March 2017. The community meal is affiliated with a national organization, Swipe Out Hunger, which provides solutions for students on college campuses to get the food they need. One of these solutions is their Swipe Drive: students with extra dining dollars or meal card swipes can use those resources for their peers. Garden Spot offers a similar opportunity—residents who have extra money in their dining accounts can donate that money to fund the monthly meal at CrossNet. The combined team of Garden Spot team members, residents and CrossNet staff serves the local community at CrossNet’s Youth Ministries building, on the fourth Monday of each month. Garden Spot plans, prepares and delivers the food. (During COVID-19, fresh produce has come from other local providers.) From 5:30-6:30pm, the combined team serves the meal and engages with the community. “In addition to providing a quality meal,” Don says, “it has always been our intention to develop relationships with the guests who come and to be open about our Christian faith. Although we respect their confidentiality, we receive prayer requests and engage in conversation with our guests.” Garden Spot and CrossNet will continue to serve the meal as take-out for the time being, but both groups hope to resume their sit-down event as soon as it is safe to do so. “We look forward to being able to return to having meaningful relationships with our guests,” says Don. Want to support the Community Meal? You can contribute funds from your prox card, or by cash or check. This can be done at the register at any of the food venues on campus.

Card Shower for Megan Bennett! Please join us as we wish Megan well. She is moving on to a wonderful opportunity beyond Garden Spot Village. Megan has contributed significantly to Garden Spot over the past almost 15 years and we are sorry to see her go. She has helped many of you through the process of making Garden Spot Village your home. You are invited to drop her a card, a note or stop by and wish her well before September 17, 2020. Whenever we’ve had new projects like the Carriage Homes and Village Square Apartments there are always people who have been on our future resident list who come to us after everything is spoken for and want one of them. The number of Sycamore Springs homes are dwindling. If you know anyone who would like to move in before the end of the year we have four brand new homes available and the rest will be available to move in late Spring 2021. Please tell your friends and family.

This presentation is entitled “Two American Narratives: applying three lenses – historical, psychological, and theological.” Our presenter will begin with a review of a recently published paper, that contrasts two narratives or what they label “story lines” for America: a country of unique history, values, and success and a country of exploitation and broken promises. He then will move to show how each side has processed these narratives by applying three lenses – historical patterns of defining colonial American groups; research on psychological pressures exerted by extremism; and finally Neibuhr’s classic “Christ and Culture” categories for how Christians interact with culture and politics. Presenter: The Rev. Canon Mark A Scheneman, DMin. Retired Episcopal priest and pastor of historic Bangor Episcopal Church, Churchtown; Rector Emeritas of St. John’s Episcopal Church, on the square, Carlisle (28 years). Dr. Scheneman also serves on the faculty of the Stevenson School for ministry and adjunct, The Anglican Studies program of the Lancaster Theological Seminary. FRAUD AWARENESS: CONSTANT VIGILANCE WILL SERVE YOU WELL

Constant vigilance of potential scamming situations has become a necessary and crucial skill in all of our lives. Top Tips: 1. Resist requests to give out any personal information to a stranger who contacts you via mail, computer or phone 2. Don’t move forward on a “fabulous opportunity” to collect a prize, assist a person in need, or purchase an item or service you did not initiate. 3. Be suspicious of any attempt to pressure you into making a quick decision. 4. Pause. Consult with a trusted financial advisor, family member or your social worker if uncertain in any interaction. Recent scams the Social Services department has assisted residents with: • Covid test kits – a caller tells you that you have had contact with a Covid 19 positive person. States you must be tested. Offers to send you a test kit IF you provide your credit card number. • Online games – a new online gaming friend suddenly has an emergency and needs your financial help. • Winning a prize – this common scam asks you to “cover costs” of the prize by sending cash or gift cards before the supposed prize money will be delivered to you. You worked hard for that money! Let’s keep it out of the hands of criminals and safely in your wallet.

Schedule subject to change. Watch CATIE for updates.

VILLAGE FIRSTS

Colleen Musselman, Director of Life Enrichment

JIM SHUMAN:

First GSV resident to volunteer at Water Street Missions in Lancaster written by Rachel hungerford, Marketing Intern

Jim Shuman is one of the first Garden Spot residents to volunteer at Water Street Mission in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Jim has been volunteering at Water Street for 8 years. Once a month, resident volunteers go into Lancaster City to serve a meal to those affected by homelessness. The volunteers help in the serving lines, bus tables, or assist with childcare. They also bring clothing and blankets to donate to the Mission. On average, the meal serves between 100 and 150 people. In the past, Jim has driven the bus for Garden Spot volunteers and loaded Water Street’s dishwasher after meals. He appreciates the pre-meal devotional and prayer led by the Water Street volunteer organizer. “They recognize that they’re ministering to needy in the Lancaster community,” he says. Jim also volunteered at Water Street before coming to Garden Spot, through Manor Brethren in Christ Church, Lancaster. He and his wife Mary Lou lived in Centerville, Pennsylvania, where Jim was a mason contractor for 35 years. Along with his employees, Jim helped with building projects such as the Fulton Bank and the Christian Fellowship Church in New Holland. Soon after Jim’s retirement in 1995, he and Mary Lou decided to find a retirement community. They looked at half a dozen retirement communities in the area, but heard about Garden Spot and decided to check it out. When they came to tour campus, they were impressed with what they saw, and moved here in 2008. The trips to Water Street aren’t the only volunteer work Jim has done. He’s been on two mission trips to build churches: one with his church to Venezuela and one with Garden Spot Village residents to Honduras. In previous years, he’s helped with bingo at Maple Farm and driven the resident shuttle to Yoder’s and Shady Maple. He’s also been involved at the Wood Shop, building boats for the annual Regatta and birdhouses for the silent auction. Jim has two children, six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. All of his grandchildren have served in the mission field in some capacity—demonstrating Jim’s long legacy of service.

VOLUNTEER SERVICES Deborah Fast, Director of Volunteer Services

PEGGY THOMPSON: SERVING IN SMALL WAYS written by Rachel Hungerford, Marketing Intern

Peggy Thompson has delivered her neighbors’ mail in Holly Drive since she moved to Garden Spot Village in 1997. When she first moved to Garden Spot, Holly Geerdes called her and said, “Since you are the first one to move into your house on Holly Drive, you have to pick up the papers.” “I said, ‘What papers?’ ‘The mail.’ And that’s how I started doing the mail,” Peggy recalls. Every Friday she had dutifully stopped and picked up the post for Holly Drive’s six cottages. Though she no longer does the mail, she liked having the job. “I enjoyed it,” she says. “You get a lot out of it because you get to meet people.” Peggy likes helping people and making connections with them. A registered nurse for 47 years, she says she liked bedside nursing best—presumably because of the face-to-face relationships she formed. She also passed her passion for healthcare onto one of her granddaughters, who works at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. When a friend and co-worker mentioned he was moving to Garden Spot, Peggy’s interest was piqued. She drove up from her hometown of Coatesville to check it out and thought that she might like to live there, too. As it turned out, many friends and acquaintances from Coatesville moved to Garden Spot, too, which made Peggy feel at home. Garden Spot is not her first taste of volunteer work. Before retirement, she volunteered in her church and her neighborhood in Coatesville, making cheesecakes for church bake sales and plowing snow for her neighbors in the winter. Now, at 97, Peggy still serves her community in small ways—baking treats for the various departments at Garden Spot. Ultimately, her motivation for volunteering is simple: “I like to do things for people.”

WELLNESS

Lauren Graber, Director of Wellness

FALL INTO FITNESS Can you be really honest with yourself? When someone asks how you are doing, do you answer “OK” but in your heart think “if you only knew”? Has Covid-19 added not only stress and anxiety to your life or perhaps weight to your body? Or when you walk up a flight of stairs or take a short stroll outside, are you easily winded? Being fit is about a lot more than just your weight. Maybe it’s time to reclaim and restart your trek toward better health. Getting started on a physical routine can help so many other areas to get on track. It’s not about becoming an exercise fanatic, but are you exercising at all? It’s always better to start with gradual change and learn to enjoy the journey. Could you picture doing some kind of exercise twice a week for at least a half hour each time? Maybe you think that’s not enough time to make any difference. But, any change that moves you in the right direction is better than doing nothing because “if nothing changes, nothing changes.”

HERE ARE SOME OF THE DOCUMENTED BENEFITS OF JUST 20 MINUTES OF EXERCISE A DAY:

Builds Strength • Burns Fat • Helps with Arthritis • Improves Cardio Health • Helps with Osteoporosis • Helps with Diabetes • Enhances overall health including emotional wellbeing, memory function and physical fitness • Can prevent injuries by strengthening the muscles and joints • Can help control blood pressure and can help prevent angina • Can reduce back pain by strengthening abdominal, hamstring and lower back extensor muscles • Can improve flexibility and balance by building stronger and more resilient muscles

Wellness Department Guidelines: • We are open in the mornings only, by appointment, to use the Cardio Room, Strength Training Room, Pool and the NEW Gardens North Exercise Room. Please call Lauren (6228), Bonnie (6131), Joanne (6227) or Mike (6229) or email Wellness@gardenspotvillage.org. • 20 minute appointments for the gym areas and 30 minutes for the pool/spa. • Contact one of the Wellness team for an orientation to learn the proper way to use our equipment and/or set up an exercise routine. • Masks are required as you enter and exit to the Wellness Center. • You will be screened as you enter. After being checked in, you may remove your mask to exercise. • The Locker Rooms are closed. No Classes will be held at this time. • You can see us on CATIE videos and mygsv.org. Hand weights or an exercise video are available to borrow. Take care and we hope to see you soon,
