CAMPUS SERVICES

Scott Ruth, Director of Campus Services

SUMMERTIME! It is really hard to believe that we will soon be celebrating Independence Day at the time this article is published! We had such a beautiful early springtime, followed by a damp, dreary May, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic. I truly hope that July allows us to begin to see smiling faces again with the absence of masks. At least the warmer temperatures will allow us to enjoy the beauty that Garden Spot Village provides us! Several residents expressed concern over the safety and use of pesticides by Campus Services and outside contractors. We make every effort to limit the use of pesticides for both personal health and environmental concerns. Any pesticides we apply are human, pet and beneficial insect-friendly. If you see Campus Services staff, Eagle Lawn Care or Tree of Life Services applying a product, within 30-60 minutes of application your pets are safe to enter the areas. Liquid products dry within that time frame and there is no residual effect that would harm pets or humans. Eagle Lawn Care will be applying a fertilizer, grub control and broadleaf weed application sometime in July. Please look for a CATIE message to alert you of the timing of that application. Any time you see a Campus Services Team member with a backpack, spraying around your foundation, it is a systemic vegetation herbicide that is not harmful to pets or humans. You may also occasionally see Mark Kauffman or Steve Heydt spraying your roses with an insecticide/fungicide application. We will be working feverishly over July to complete the cottage foundation mulching and keeping the weeds at bay! Messner Tree Services will also be paying us a visit to remove several dead or declining trees throughout the Campus. Please enjoy the warmer temperatures and fresh air while practicing Corona Courtesies!!

FINANCIAL EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS NOW AVAILABLE ON CATIE Two of the popular educational sessions that are offered by the Development Office have been videotaped for CATIE so that you can watch at your leisure. Nikki Shingle, Regional Director for Everence, recorded a session on Charitable Gift Annuities. She has been offering this educational session at least once a year for the past several years. Attendees have found this very helpful as they determine if this would be a financial benefit (i.e., tax benefits and higher rates than CDs) as well as an opportunity to leave a legacy. To receive a copy of the slides for this educational session to use while watching the video, please contact Janine Ziegler (6288). Over the years, more than 300 residents have attended the Preplanning for End of Life Educational Session. Feedback about this presentation has been very positive as individuals have found it easier to talk about a difficult subject. Attendees have gained tips on how to keep records and how to make things easier for loved ones. The speakers below have been videotaped and the recording should be available on CATIE by the middle of July. Please watch the Weekly Announcements for details. As for presentations in the past, a three-ring notebook for the session will be available for a small fee. Presenters include: Chet Yoder, Director of Pastoral Services; Duane Tice, Resident; Fred Groff, Groff High Eckenroth Funeral Home and Linda Dodge, CFRE, Director of Development.

HARVEST WEEK TO REPLACE 2020 FALL FESTIVAL Written by Allison Cuthie, Associate Director of Development

Due to the restrictions we will continue to follow to keep our campus COVID-19-free, the Fall Festival committee has opted for a resident-only, campus-wide, week-long event to replace our traditional Fall Festival. We look forward to bringing you Harvest Week, from Monday, October 5 through Saturday, October 10. We will celebrate the glorious fall season with our traditional chicken barbecue and apple dumpling sales, seasonal DIY crafts, a gift-basket silent auction, apple pie contest, strolling musicians, and more! Don't despair over the local fairs being canceled. We are striving for a week-long event which will feature funfilled activities, contests, and of course, food. Stay tuned for more details. The Garden Spot Village family is looking forward to celebrating the fall season with you.

MARKETING

Scott Miller, Chief Marketing Officer

So many people have said to me recently that they are so glad they live here. We all know that life feels different, but while our activities and interactions are more cautious, life hasn’t stopped at Garden Spot Village. Our marketing ads and website are catching people’s interest, Sales is bringing people in to see the available homes and Life Enrichment is greeting people who have just moved in and showing them the opportunities that are on the horizon. People moved into the first new homes at Sycamore Springs the second week of June. Additionally, because of current interest, a Sycamore Springs model is now open for viewing by appointment. As life becomes more active again, our teams are being cautious by not “overdoing” interactions, making sure visitors wear face masks and maintain social distancing. We encourage you to do the same. We’ve learned how to keep ourselves and others safe. It’s important that we put that new wisdom to work for all our benefit.

CHAPLAIN FOCUS - KEN MARTIN Chaplain Ken Martin enjoys many connections to Garden Spot Village. He was a GSV board member in the early years, and his parents spent their final years here. He has connected with many residents through his role as visitation minister at Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community, having served the church and broader community as pastor, overseer, board member of various organizations, and a contributor of guidance and sweat equity for local ministries. Ken joined the GSV Pastoral Services staff in July 2013. Within the past seven years he has contributed ministry to many as primary chaplain contact in Mountain View, Laurel View, and Adult Day Services; coordinator of the monthly men’s breakfast at Yoder’s Restaurant; and coordinator of the GSV Retired Clergy and Church Workers Group. In addition, Ken has spent countless hours in one-to-one ministry. Ken has chaired the planning committee tasked with bringing the Thistledown Co-Living Home to reality. I have deeply appreciated Ken’s commitment and contribution to the GSV Pastoral Services team. His positive outlook on life and willingness to be involved in many ministry opportunities exemplifies the culture of GSV! Ken’s deep commitment to knowing and following Jesus has been evident as he serves to enrich the lives of residents and staff, as an expression of Christ’s love. Ken Martin will retire from his chaplain role at the end of July. We wish God’s very best to him and his wife Lois in the years ahead. Perhaps at some point we will welcome them as residents! Please consider stopping by the Chapel Lobby on Wednesday, July 29, 1:30-3:30pm to extend your thanks and blessings to Ken. Light refreshments will be served. Event subject to change depending upon the COVID-19 situation.

GOOD THINGS CAN ALSO BE CONTAGIOUS

A personal reflection on the Wall of Gratitude Monday morning, June 1, began like most others: driving to work with a time of praise to a God able to provide the wisdom and strength needed in difficult times, prayers for family members, team members, residents at GSV particularly naming those walking through difficult times with health changes or transitions. Unlocked the office door. Began the walk to Dietary Kitchen for the second checkin of the day (first was at screening tent), when the new hallway display on Main Street caught my eye. Notes of gratitude and appreciation from residents to staff. I read a few on my way to have my temperature taken, read a few more on my way back, and felt my spirit lift. The volume of participation overwhelmed me. The next day I noticed the display had grown and scanned a few more. On the third day, I decided to slow down and carefully reflect on 3–4 notes each day. I noticed a marvelous thing, gratitude is like a seed that takes root and begins to grow in a life-giving, renewing and strengthening way. Gratitude is contagious. Both givers and receivers of gratitude experience benefits. Dr. Alex Korb, in his book Upward Spiral, lists many positive benefits to the practice of gratitude, including better sleep, a stronger immune system and stronger, healthier relationships. Dr Carolyn Leaf, a well-known psychologist, Christian author, and speaker, also devoted several chapters in her book, Think, Learn, Succeed, to research-based evidence that shows the practice of gratitude positively affects the physical wiring of our brains and brings about good in our lives. Through common sense and life experience, we know that gratitude is both powerful and beneficial. One thoughtful walk past the GSV Wall of Gratitude proves it completely! To each of you who took the time to put appreciation into words, who chose to reflect on the positive, and to those of you who disciplined yourselves to look for things that are honorable and beautiful during a time when many difficult and alarming things are staring us in the face: thank you. You elevated the mood of staff, yes, but also reminded us of the ability that gratitude has to infect a whole community. What we invite in, concentrate on, and give attention to will grow.

SAM & JOYCE BEYER:

First GSV Couple to Join the Water Quality Control Group written by Rachel Hungerford, Marketing Intern

Sam and Joyce Beyer joined the Water Quality Control group 15 years ago, when a representative from the Lancaster County Conservation District presented the opportunity to test water quality in local streams. “I said, ‘That’s a good thing to be in, let’s sign up,’” Joyce remembers. The couple had extra time since their move to Garden Spot meant they didn’t need to tend the yard or do home maintenance. Joyce and Sam were the first couple to join the Water Quality Control group. In two groups of 4 or 5 people, the team collects and tests the water of Mill Creek, drawing from seven different sites that range from Overly’s Creek to Bird-in-Hand Bakery. The two groups gather samples, bring them back to a lab at Garden Spot Village, and analyze the samples based upon their content. Then they submit their results to an online database. The group members share the different tasks—everyone chips in for the final product. Though Joyce no longer participates in the group, she did data entry for three or four years. “I thought it was fun,” she says. Sam and Joyce have shared the value of testing water quality with the next generation by taking their greatgrandchildren out during Garden Spot’s Grands and Kids Camp. The kids have fun walking in the water and playing in the creek, and they get to see what their grandparents are doing. “They look forward to it each year and take interest in it,” Sam says. The Water Quality Control group has seen improvements in the water of Mill Creek over the years. Some good water critters that had left the area have come back. And the group itself has seen growth—after membership dwindled a few years ago, five new members have joined. Today, the group is a mix of Garden Spot residents and local community members, including a woman who collects water samples in her own backyard. Joyce and Sam haven’t been the only couple to participate in the group, but they can still say that they were the first.

VOLUNTEER SERVICES Deborah Fast, Director of Volunteer Services

JUDY RETTEW: SERVING WITH CARE

written by Rachel Hungerford, Marketing Intern “I wanted to volunteer to do something,” says Judy Rettew, Garden Spot Village resident since 2016. Even though she’s blind, Judy has found ways to “do something” at Garden Spot. She folds laundry every Wednesday for about 2 hours—everything from washcloths to napkins to pillowcases. She participates in Garden Spot’s Caring Connections and Quiet Presence programs, and she sings in Village Voices. She got involved in volunteering after attending a seminar that shows residents the different opportunities around campus. Overall, Judy says she serves about 6 hours a week. Originally from Aldan, Pennsylvania in Delaware County, Judy was a receptionist at a mission in Chester for 14 years, and she had 2 typist jobs before that. When she was ready to retire, Judy looked at a few retirement communities in Philadelphia, but didn’t find any that she liked. Her father grew up in Ephrata, so she thought she would look in the Lancaster County area. She found that she knew many Garden Spot Village residents from her church, Aldan Union, and from the Delaware County community. She also appreciated the presence of the health center on campus. To people who are thinking about volunteering at Garden Spot, Judy suggests being open to new experiences and just see what happens. “Give it a try,” she encourages. “Try different things and see what you end up liking the most.”

WELLNESS

Lauren Graber, Director of Wellness

WELCOME TO WELLNESS BEHIND THE MASK... We hope you are finding new ways to keep exercising at home and outside. We are slowly reopening Wellness in new ways and we want to ensure the safety of those using the Wellness Center. But as we reflect on the last three months, we have found “silver linings” in our lives. "I would definitely say that the silver lining for me in all this is that I have been able to meet and interact with more residents. Being at the check-in tent has given me the opportunity to see residents that I would not have met in the course of my job." — Bonnie

"It is incredible to see how drastically changed the last three months has been for us as a country. However, there’s been a lot of great things as well! It’s given me a greater appreciation for the little things in life, like being able to see friends and family, hug loved ones and shake someone’s hand, have coffee with a friend, and just stay connected with those in my life. I’ve also done more reading than ever before, and overall, it’s been an amazing reflection period for me!" — Mike "Since water aerobics classes were suspended the last week in March, one way of connecting and staying in touch was to initiate a daily Round Robin Email with class members. Each day since then, the Round Robin email is sent out with the lyrics to a song, a photograph I’ve taken, and a question intended to be thought provoking. Individuals can reply to the group as a whole or individually to me or anyone else in the group. The “silver lining” in this venture, I believe, is that we have been caused to reflect on various aspects of our lives that truly produce joy despite pain. A double reward is that in the sharing with one another, our lives are enriched in ways we never might have discovered and our joys are therefore multiplied." — Katie "I hope you take away the things you have learned and as we move forward to our new reality realize what is truly important in your life. Remember you can see us on mygsv.org and CATIE videos. If you want to borrow hand weights for an exercise video, just call me (6228) or email lgraber@gardenspotvillage.org. Take care and we hope to see you soon." — Lauren
