While other retirement communities are concerned about people’s willingness to move-in after things open back up, we are hearing the direct opposite. People on the radar screen are anxious for things to get moving again so they can call Garden Spot Village their home! That is largely due to you, your contributions, and your willingness to help your neighbors. Furthermore, you have access to have a variety of services that make this time easier. Take, for example, delivery from The Harvest Table, Linden Store, and Stauffer Pharmacy, as well as Shady Maple and others grocers. Each week Coffee & Conversation helps make sense of all the conflicting information on the news because we’ve been spending countless hours staying in touch with everything that is happening and can provide a balanced view of what is really going on. And of course, we are committed to the safety precautions that put distance between all of us and the virus. The Garden Spot Village community has come together, and while life looks different, there are still opportunities to live with purpose in our community. When was the last time you visited our website? There are some great stories about everything that is happening during these unprecedented times.

THE SOLID ROCK

Written by Ken Martin, Associate Chaplain

“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! Trust in the Lord always, for the Lord God is the eternal rock.” Isaiah 26: 3-4 NLT

We have all been impacted by the current COVID-19 reality in some way. Some people have been ill, while others have experienced the death of a family member or friend. Still others have been dealing with a loss of income because of dismissal from work. Personally, I do not remember anything of this magnitude during my life, but I have talked with people who remember hearing stories about the flu of 1918. The reality is that life brings difficulties and challenges to all of us at times. Sometimes the challenges are more far-reaching and difficult than usual. When troubles come our way, it is easy to become discouraged and even somewhat depressed. The verse from Isaiah referenced above says that God will keep in perfect peace all who trust in Him, all whose thoughts are fixed on him. God is a rock during the storm. We pray for storms, like COVID-19, to be removed. My wife and I do that frequently. I encourage us all to do that, but also to trust the sovereignty of God for the timing of such things. We do not always understand God’s timing in such events. But we can trust him like a rock during the storm and have peace. I am reminded of a story I once read of a person who was camping near a large body of water. She began taking pictures of the water splashing against a rock at the shore. As she kept looking through the viewfinder at the water coming to the shore, she began to feel dizzy and faint. When she moved the camera to her lap, all seemed well. Then she put the camera to her eyes again, but this time focused on the rock instead of the moving water. In Isaiah, it says that God is the eternal Rock. During these challenging days, let us unite together by focusing on God as the eternal Rock while facing the challenges of life. Schedule subject to change. Watch CATIE for updates.

EMERGENCY SHEET UPDATES

Please take a moment to review the Emergency Sheets in your bathroom. If any information needs to be corrected or added, make the changes on one sheet and forward it to Social Services. Keeping this information up-to-date is crucial to receiving appropriate care and support during a time of need. EMTs will take a sheet with them during hospital transports. GSV staff will know your preferences in medical providers and family members/friends you would like contacted if there is a need to do so. Thank you!

SCAM ALERT

Publishers Clearing House Notice from New Holland Police Department With the COVID-19 pandemic, there is an increase in several different scams, and one involves the Publisher’s Clearing House. This is a common scam, but there are a couple variances. In this scam, you may be contacted via telephone asking if you received notification in the mail regarding winning $2.5 million from Publisher’s Clearing House. You would then be instructed to go to a local Walmart or Target to wire money. The scammer states that once the money is wired, Publisher’s Clearing House would come the next day to deliver a check for the above amount, and also to give you a brand new Mercedes Sedan. As with all scams, please keep these facts in mind: • You won’t be contacted via telephone by Publisher’s Clearing House to be notified of a sweepstakes winning. • Publisher’s Clearing House will not ask you to pay for the taxes on your winnings before receiving any money. • Taxes, or any other handling fees, etc, should never be paid via gift cards, wired money, etc. • If contacted by anyone stating that they are from the IRS, it will be in WRITING first. Please continue to be vigilant in watching for scams. If you have any questions, or think you have been contacted by a scammer, please inform GSV administration or the New Holland Police Department.

ONLINE SHOPPING

With increased online shopping during stay-at-home orders, please be cautious of companies you do business with. If it is not a prominent vendor (Amazon, Zappos, Walmart, Target, etc.) then be sure to research the company prior to placing an online order. Look up a phone number and address, and look for verified online reviews of their products. Because so much commerce has moved online, it opens up more opportunities for illegitimate companies to offer goods and get credit card numbers from shoppers.

SANDY ALLEN:

First Experience with Bees in the GSV Bee Club written by Juanita Fox, Storyteller

When Don and Sandy Allen moved to Garden Spot Village in August 2015, conversations about a Bee Club were just starting. Six months later, in early 2016, Sandy joined a small group of residents who started the Bee Club. Although she had no experience tending bees, she brought an eagerness to learn more. When Jim McAbee, the first club president, stepped down in late 2018, Sandy accepted leadership and stepped into the role. She relies on the other members, some of whom—like Charlie Groff and Hobe Dearborn—tended bees in the past. Dale Beiler, Garden Spot chief financial officer, has also offered insight and shared his many years of experience tending bees. Sandy says, “When you get up close and personal with the bees and begin to see them working and actually get into the hives—it’s just an amazing thing to watch.” Over the years they have found that the bees positively influence the growth of greens in the aeroponic greenhouse and residents anecdotally share that their flowers are blooming better. In early April, Sandy and others from the Bee Club started preparing the bees for the summer. The club has three hives, located between the Aeroponic Greenhouse and the tree nursery on the west side of Kinzer Avenue. The bees in hive one made it through the winter, but the bees in hives two and three died. The Bee Club replaced the bees in late April and look forward to having honey later this summer. Sandy is always recruiting new members—bee experts and novices alike. “Being part of the Bee Club is an amazing experience,” she says. “When you learn about what the bees actually do—maintain the hive, care for their Queen, propagate, pollinate and make honey—it’s miraculous what they do. Our major goal is to help maintain the species. If the bee population doesn’t exist, neither do we.” ABOUT THE BEE CLUB Annual membership in the Bee Club is $25. The money is used to buy supplies, food and hives for the bees. Members attend quarterly meetings, visit the hives often to care for the bees, and, in a successful year, receive a pint of the honey when it is harvested each fall. To learn more or get involved, contact Sandy (717.940.7996). Schedule subject to change. Watch CATIE for updates.

VOLUNTEER SERVICES Deborah Fast, Director of Volunteer Services

HELEN HARCLERODE: FAITHFULLY VOLUNTEERING written by Juanita Fox, Storyteller

Helen Harclerode enjoys connecting with her neighbors as she volunteers. She volunteers at Linden on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings, four to five hours a week. In the early weeks of Linden order delivery during the coronavirus pandemic, she also helped to deliver orders to apartments. “The store has gone through quite a few changes since I first came here,” Helen says. She served in the store when it was the Village Store, Refresh Gifts and Essentials, and now Linden. “I chose to volunteer at Linden because when I retired from teaching, I worked at the register for a building supply store. I thought it would be a good way to volunteer, because I had experience. Also, the other residents are always patient, even if I make a mistake or can’t answer a question,” Helen adds. Helen and her husband, Ken, moved to a Village Square Apartment from their log home near Morgantown in November 2008. As a couple, they quickly began to volunteer. She lists the volunteer assignments they shared through the years, “We decorated Christmas trees in the Apartment Suites Lobby, hosted a rummage sale as part of the Fall Festival, traveled to Louisiana and Alabama on a Garden Spot Village-sponsored trip with Mennonite Disaster Service and helped with special events like the golf tournament, the marathon, the business expo and Pedal to Preserve.” Helen adds with a laugh, “Oh, and the laundry—we folded an awful lot of towels in the laundry.” In addition, Helen taught Hinkletown Mennonite School children how to knit, served as a pen pal to 5th graders at New Holland Elementary and helped people with their trays at the Harvest Table. A HISTORY OF SERVING Helen and Ken worked in the Pottsgrove School District in Pottstown, Pa. Ken was a high school woodshop teacher who coached football and track for 33 years. In addition to working part time as a substitute teacher in the district, Helen supported his work through the years, creating opportunities to serve his players and students in their home. One of the regular things they did was host the senior football players, a few at a time, for a formal dinner. Helen says, “That was quite an experience for me, getting to know the boys that way.” She continues, “One of the boys who did come, in later years, was a wrestling coach at Boyertown. He told us that he and his wife hosted his wrestlers for dinner because he liked it so much. It was interesting and I got to know the boys in a different way.” They chose to move to Garden Spot because Ken grew up in Lancaster County and they visited the area often. Helen says, “All of the employees—from the Volunteer Services to the Maintenance Team—are so kind. I would recommend Garden Spot Village to anybody.”

So much interesting and engaging content is available that we suspect readers will be visiting many of these sites long after our sheltering-at-home time has ended.

If you need some inspiration to prepare a healthful meal, check advice from celebrity chefs. Reach Out, Keep in Touch – Write letters to friends or find a pen pal who would love to hear from you.
