DEVELOPMENT

Linda Dodge, CFRE, Director of Development

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITIES POPULAR WITH RESIDENTS A charitable gift annuity is a great way to help Garden Spot Village in the future, while at the same time, guaranteeing residents a fixed rate of income for life. There are also some possible tax benefits. Below are a few examples of single life rates. Two-life charitable gift annuities are also available. You can choose to delay payments and that will increase the annual return.

Age when gift is made

Annual return for single life

65 70 75 80 85

4.7% 5.1% 5.8% 6.9% 8.0%

Recent applications have been funded with appreciated stock and mutual funds. In the past, residents have also written checks. The minimum amount to establish a Charitable Gift Annuity is $10,000. To get a no-obligation example for your age(s), please contact Linda Dodge, CFRE, Director of Development (6215). The example will show you what your annual return would be and also your possible tax benefits. “My Charitable Gift Annuity has been a very good investment for me. I am happy with the return I am getting and the savings on my taxes.” —Anne Cressman, Resident “I invested several years ago and didn’t need the income at that time, so I deferred starting my payments. With the deferral, I got a higher interest rate. A Charitable Gift Annuity is a great investment with a better return than most current investment opportunities and the remainder gives me the opportunity to leave a legacy gift to the Benevolent Fund.” —Bill Hunter, Resident

MARKETING

Scott Miller, Chief Marketing Officer

SPRING IS IN THE AIR.

I remember when the sale of Carriage Homes was wrapping up many years ago. After the last one was sold, a couple stopped in who had been thinking about a Carriage Home. They decided to go for it, but they were too late. The thing that made me think of the Carriage Home story is that there are just about as many Sycamore Springs Cottages still available, as there were Carriage Homes at that time. Spring brings us many visitors, some returning with renewed interest and many who will be exploring Garden Spot Village for the first time. For those anxiously awaiting to call Garden Spot home and those who would rather enjoy everything sooner rather than later, please do everyone a favor and look or possibly have another look at Sycamore Springs. It might avoid missing an opportunity and it would be wonderful to have all those homes sold, this spring! The fact that 33 are already sold is a tribute to you and the way you welcome people when they come to visit. As you know, people love it here! Thank you for making Garden Spot Village such a wonderful place to live.

OPENING WINDOWS TO WORSHIP: CELTIC TRADITION March 15, Sunday– 6:30pm, Garden Towers As part of our Opening Windows to Worship series, SaraJane Munshower will lead a worship service in the Celtic Tradition. SaraJane writes, “What do you think of when you see or hear the word Celtic? Until I was about 40 or 50, my first thoughts were Irish standing stones and pagan rituals. Somewhere in those years, I began to hear Irish music, poems, and stories in Sunday worship services. Then the writings of John O’Donohue, Esther de Waal, and John Philip Newell came across my horizon. On receiving an invitation for a pilgrimage to the Isle of Iona, Scotland, I joined a group for a week of morning and evening worship in the restored abbey. We were blessed to be there on Pentecost, with pilgrims from all over the world. We invite you to join us as we explore Celtic Traditions during this special worship service. Please come, and bring a friend!” - Blessings, SaraJane Munshower, along with Pat Ross, Dick Johnson, and Chet Yoder

DON MACKIE:

1 at GSV to be dually enlisted in United States Army and Navy st

written by Alex Nieves, Marketing Intern

Don Mackie, a resident of Garden Spot Village since 2009, has completed much in his life, including some unusual things. Born in Des Moines, Iowa on August 23, 1923, Don is the son of Thomas and Esther Mackie. He graduated from East High School in June of 1941 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in October of 1942, right in the midst of war.

Don Mackie, Garden Spot Village resident since August, 2009.

During WWII, he served in the Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Porterfield DD-682. He served most of his time as a First-class technician, and was honorably discharged as chief electronic technician in January of 1946. He earned six medal stars and four ribbons.

After his discharge, he earned a B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering at Iowa State University, where he joined the Army through the university's ROTC. He was commissioned in the U.S. Army as a first lieutenant during the Korean War. He worked as an officer of the 303rd signal service battalion at Exercise Desert Rock—a code name for a series of atomic bomb testings at the Nevada Proving Grounds—as part of a detachment from the 6th army for six months during the 1950s. He also worked with the atomic energy commission, which carried out and studied atomic bomb test effects on materials, animals, structures, weapons, and more. His job was to set up communications from Nellis Air Force Base, on a nearby mountain down into Desert Rock, helping to guide and orient Army troops in the area—only seven miles from the testing site. Their goal was to help the troops experience and observe the explosions, as well as, the effects on tested materials. Most only serve in one branch of the military over the course of a life time. Few serve in more than one, and Don is one of these rare few. This feat makes Don the first at Garden Spot to ever be dually enlisted in the U.S. Army and Navy. After serving in the Army, Don worked at AT&T in the general and long lines departments, which was the operating arm that tied together the local Bell System companies including Southern Bell and New York Tel. He served in this civil occupation for about 38 years, working in the operations, engineering, sales, marketing, and corporate finance departments. VOLUNTEER SERVICES Deborah Fast, Director of Volunteer Services VOLUNTEERS VALUE COMMUNITY

"The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members." —Coretta Scott King By this measure, Garden Spot Village must be one of the greatest communities around! As Volunteer Services, we see on a daily basis the compassionate actions of our 500+ volunteers—residents and those from the broader community—who selflessly serve our residents and staff in many ways. Recent insights from volunteerism research identify the importance of community to volunteers. Of six key takeaways from a wideranging study of volunteer perspectives, the first was the following: Altruism is the top motivation for volunteers. They want to contribute to causes they care about and improve their communities over enjoying personal benefit. (The Volunteer Perspective – Industry Insights 2019) “Where do you need help?” “How can I get involved?” Questions like these, or the immediate flurry of phone calls responding to any volunteer needs we post on CATIE are tangible evidence of that care for the community here, and a desire to be part of improving it. And we know that this may often come at a cost—missing out on a relaxing afternoon to serve in one of the stores or driving the Jolly Trolley; giving up some personal freedom to commit to a weekly assignment in Laundry; or stepping out of one’s comfort zone to visit someone who is in need of comfort and companionship. As with everything we do here, it is all about relationships. Another finding of the 2019 study was this: Human connection is also important to volunteers. Building relationships within the community and networking with peers is a key driver of volunteer satisfaction and retention. We often hear from volunteers that relationships are a big part of what motivates them to continue volunteering. A desire to help, and to make a difference is what draws someone to serve—but the relationships formed in the process are what keeps someone volunteering. To all of our volunteers: thank you for all of the ways you contribute to the greatness of Garden Spot Communities. The impact of your compassion, your generosity and your time is immeasurable.

WELLNESS 2020 WELLNESS VISION PART 3 TAKE CARE OF YOUR KIDNEYS

March is National Kidney Month and the NKF is urging all Americans to give their kidneys a second thought and a well-deserved checkup. Kidneys filter 200 liters of blood a day, help regulate blood pressure and direct red blood cell production. But they are also prone to disease; one in three Americans is at risk for kidney disease due to diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history of kidney failure. There are more than 30 million Americans who already have kidney disease, and most don’t know it because there are often no symptoms until the disease has progressed. Three questions to start the conversation about kidney health with your healthcare provider on your next visit 1. Have I been tested for kidney disease and how healthy are my kidneys? 2. How often should I get my kidneys checked? 3. What should I do to keep my kidneys healthy?

Marion Sacks appreciates the opportunities she has to pursue an active lifestyle at Garden Spot Village. “Because I’m active—playing water volleyball and participating in Scottish country dancing—I feel better now than before I retired. I’m healthier and I don’t have the aches and pains I had when I sat at a desk all day,” she says. Marion plays water volleyball on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons. “It’s an hour and a half of fun and exercise that you don’t really notice because you are so engaged in the game,” she says. She says the group is always welcoming new players. “New players just have to show up and we’ll put them on a team.” Growing up in Scotland, Marion has always enjoyed Scottish country dancing. When she moved to Garden Spot she wistfully shared with some new neighbors that she missed the classes. She soon learned that Hagar Scott had her preliminary certification for Scottish Country Dancing. Hagar agreed to lead a class and the Wellness Department agreed to host the weekly dances. “Hagar is a very good teacher; we all love and appreciate her,” Marion says. Just like the water volleyball games, the Scottish country dancing classes are open for anyone to join at any time. “Just show up on Tuesdays at 1:30,” Marion says. Plus, just like water volley ball, “It’s exercise you don’t notice.” The group meets regularly on Tuesday afternoons from January through Memorial Day and Labor Day through Thanksgiving. They take breaks for summer and Christmas. Wellness Adventures are another way Marion connects with the Wellness Department. In January she enjoyed skiing at Ski Roundtop. “Bonnie and I had a great time,” she says. “It’s nice to have a buddy to ski with; we looked out for each other,” Marion says. Marion looks forward to participating in upcoming Wellness Adventures, as they fit into her schedule. Horseback riding and go kart racing are just a few of the adventures she hopes to experience in 2020.
