DEVELOPMENT

Linda Dodge, Director of Development

YEAR-END GIVING AND TAX PLANNING Because of loving and generous hearts, many residents are donors to Garden Spot Village at year-end. As you plan your giving, there are opportunities that could also save you tax dollars.

QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTION: You may be pleasantly surprised to see what you can save in taxes by

making donations from your IRA using the Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) provision. Your IRA administrator can help with this process. It is important to start this process early in December. If you decide to make a gift this way, please be sure to let the Development Office know. Start planning now to make gifts in 2021 to save on taxes.

DONOR ADVISED FUNDS: Donor Advised Funds (DAF) are also a way that may help save taxes. When the tax laws changed in recent years, fewer people itemized because of the higher standard deduction. By establishing a Donor Advised Fund and bunching several years of giving into one donation to that fund, you may for that particular year get to itemize and save more on taxes. For example, if you put your giving for three years into the Donor Advised Fund, you get a tax deduction for the full amount the first year. Each of the three years, at your request, the Fund will send your donations to your favorite charities, but your tax deduction came that first year from the Donor Advised Fund. APPRECIATED STOCK: Giving appreciated stock is also a tax savings because you avoid capital gains. If you plan to give stock, please contact the Development Office for the numbers that your broker will need for the electronic transfer. Please provide the Development Office with the type of stock and the number of shares being donated because your name will not be attached to the stock when it is transferred. CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY: Establishing a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) that will provide a legacy gift in the future is also a way to save on taxes. The year you establish the CGA you get a tax deduction that may reduce your taxes. In addition, a significant portion of your income from the CGA is not taxed.

Thank you for touching the lives of others with your gifts. Please feel free to contact Linda Dodge, CFRE, Director of Development (6215) to learn more about these opportunities.

ANGEL TREE PROGRAM CONTINUES

As in past years, paper angels will be placed on the Angel Trees in order to remember/ honor loved ones and friends. You will have received a brochure with the application for angels in the mail. As we have done the past two years, angel sponsors can submit a photo of their “angel to be included in a video presentation shown during the Celebration of Life Ceremony, which will be held on Thursday, December 10, 2pm. For individuals who wish to write their own messages on angels, there will be an opportunity to do so at the Chapel Lobby, 9:30-11:30am on the following days: TUESDAY, DECEMBER 1 THURSDAY, DECEMBER 3 Angels are available for a donation of $10 each, with proceeds benefitting the GSV Benevolent Fund.

For all events, masks and social is distancing required. Schedule subject to change. Watch CATIE for updates.

The chaplains will provide a service of lessons and carols. Included with this service will be scripture readings by the chaplains and music drawn from a wide variety of sources (including the King’s College choir in England, the Morman Tabernacle Choir, GSV Village Voices, and a hymn sung in a Community Church worship service during the 2019 Advent season). Plan to prepare some cookies and hot chocolate at home and join in a time of celebration for the Christ child!

DOULA MINISTRY BEGINS

Garden Spot Village has added another level of ministry to our Pastoral Services Department. Marian Harnish has been invited and trained to provide End-of-Life Doula services. Drawing upon her lifelong work as nurse, chaplain, and educator, Marian brings a wonderful skill set to this position. The word Doula (Greek “doulas”) is defined as one who serves. End-of-life Doulas serve essentially the same purpose as birth doulas, but at the opposite end of the life cycle. They provide care and support for the dying and their family, guiding them through unfamiliar territory to make the transition as physically, emotionally, and spiritually peaceful as possible. Doulas work alongside providers already present (medical, pastoral care, social services, Hospice) to ensure the holistic comfort of the dying. The role of a doula might be best described as a faithful companion during one’s final journey. A doula focuses on being present in physical, emotional, and spiritual spaces in order to offer end-of-life guidance and support. Because the process of dying is deeply personal, the ministry of the doula will vary according to the expectations and desires of the individual and family. As an extension of GSV Pastoral Services, Marian will work in conjunction with Pastor Chet and Chaplain Karyn in offering the doula services to residents who wish to engage this ministry. Ideally the doula’s ministry is most effective when invited into the process earlier rather than later. This offers the opportunity to create a legacy project for the family, to address any unresolved concerns of the resident and family, and to establish the quality of companionship, which will support the individual through the entire dying process. We believe that the doula ministry extends the GSV mission of person-centered care and are grateful for Marian’s availability to pioneer this new level of care! As Marian will not be working from a GSV office, Chet and Karyn will be happy to initiate conversations with you about the ministry and coordinate referrals to Marian for follow-up and engaging of the doula ministry. Please stay tuned for a presentation with additional details by Marian at the December GSV Towne Meeting. For all events, masks and social is distancing required. Schedule subject to change. Medicare Open Enrollment Final Call OCTOBER 15 – DECEMBER 7, 2020

Call Resident Services (6000) if you would like to schedule an appointment to review your Medicare D Prescription Drug plan with a member of the Social Services Team.

In Recognition that Christmas may not be Merry for everyone this year

The Holiday season can bring many expectations. But what if you’re grieving and every day already feels challenging? Perhaps tears come unbidden, or the thought of holiday meals is unpalatable. What if being around merry-makers makes you want to crawl under the covers? If you are grieving the death of a loved one, you may even wish you could skip Christmas this year. If you are experiencing any of these things, know that you are not alone. Pick and choose what is most important for you this year. Give yourself permission to let certain traditions go, or to create new ones. Hold plans loosely, and give yourself an out (for example, “I’m planning to be there, but if it’s a difficult day emotionally I may just decide to stay home.”) What you are experiencing is very hard. If you’re looking for additional support during the holidays, there are several evening zoom sessions presented by the Pathways Center for Grief and Loss: “Ways to Remember,” “Living for Today,” “What are the Gifts?” and “What Now?” Contact Pathways directly to register: 717-391-2413. You are also invited to attend the Living with Loss/Living with Hope group at GSV as we watch and discuss Grief Share’s “Surviving the Holidays” DVD.

For all events, masks and social is distancing required. Schedule subject to change. Watch CATIE for updates.

VILLAGE FIRSTS

Colleen Musselman, Director of Life Enrichment

Harry Black: First to Lead Train Room written Abigail O’Neill, GSV Intern

In 1942 Harry Black was given his first train for Christmas. “Most boys had trains and you could always find a train track around the skirt of a family Christmas tree,” Harry remembers. His love for trains only blossomed from that first gift as he started a layout in his family’s basement. Harry would work on his layout after school all the way up until college. When Harry started college and joined the workforce, he found that he had less time to work on trains. He continued to collect pieces for the layout and kept most of his collection in storage, but had a plan to dive back into his train room someday. When Harry retired, he started working on the train layout in his basement again. Harry and his wife, Mary Alice, moved into a carriage home at Garden Spot Village October 2003. After a phone call with Colleen Musselman from Life Enrichment, Harry had found a home for his layout. On October 16, 2003, Harry’s train layout was delivered to a 17' X 24' room in seven pieces and a short eight days later, the club had their first meeting. As the train club expanded its membership and worked on the display, in 2004 they decided to host their first Christmas open house. Within a year, the space was enlarged and the club started counting the train room visitors. By the end of the 2019 Christmas season, the total visitor count had reached over 42,500 visitors! Harry says with a laugh, “When the small display was in my basement, its visitors were my wife and a few close friends. Now that it has expanded into a large GSV Train Club layout, it has been seen by thousands of people.” When asked what he loves about the train room, Harry replies, “I love all of it.” Harry elaborated on the comradery of the club, explaining that all 27 members bring something to the table. Harry likes that the train room positively promotes Garden Spot Village and has wonderful staff support. “The train room has influenced the final decision of several club members to make the Garden Spot move,” he says. Looking forward to the 2020 display, Harry shared that it is nearly done. With a new elevated train line and added running cable cars, the Train Club looks forward to open house time again. As of now, the train room will only be open to residents, with controlled numbers for safety, but recently Garden Spot Village created a virtual tour of the room that can be accessed on the homepage of gardenspotvillage.org. Harry says that people often question the countless hours of work put into the room and to this Harry replies, “There is no work, it is all fun!”

VOLUNTEER SERVICES Deborah Fast, Director of Volunteer Services DWANE PRESCOTT: Faithfully Playing the Organ written Abigail O’Neill, GSV Intern

At 12 years old, on July 10, 1942, Dwane Prescott was given the role of wedding-cake-watcher for his sister’s wedding; however, he found himself being drawn to the sounds of the organ playing in the next room. The organist was practicing for the ceremony on the new Hammond Organ. She began to observe Dwane's young curiosity and invited him to watch her play. This experience sparked a love that would last for the next 78 years. Dwane shared the story about acquiring a Prescott Reed Organ and having it shipped from Maine to their home in Anaheim, California. This unique organ was in the Prescott's home for 35 years. It became a "downsizing gift" and has been with two other Prescott families through the years. Growing up in San Diego, Dwane started playing the organ for Sunday school at age 14 and grew his passion as he progressed to sanctuary organist by age 17. His love for the organ continued as he played for chapel services at Pasadena College and served as the organist for the base chapel when he served in Guam with the Navy during the Korean War. Dwane later moved back to southern California in order to work in security title insurance. Clarice and Dwane were great friends back in their days at Pasadena College. After getting back in contact a few years after, the two married in 1960 and raised their family in Anaheim, California. The family, with two boys and two girls, bought a Lazy Daze motor home and saw a small piece of each of the 50 states! They have lived a very happy 60 years together. During his time in California, Dwane continued to play as the organist for a Church of the Nazarene, before moving to another church in Santa Anna. Dwane and Clarice stayed at that church for 19 years while he continued to practice his gift. Through his lifetime Dwane has spent countless hours practicing his craft. Once, when Clarice asked why he practiced so much, he responded, “I do it unto the Lord.” As native Californians, Dwane and Clarice moved to Prescott, Arizona in retirement. Soon after settling, they connected with a local church. Through a generous donation, the church received a like-new 2 manual Allen Organ and Dwane welcomed the opportunity to share the role of organist for 14 years. About 11 years ago Dwane and Clarice decided to move to the east coast to be closer to their daughter and her family. On a whim, they toured Garden Spot Village. Near the end of their three-hour tour Dwane spied the organ in the Chapel and Clarice notes, “God drew us here.” Dwane initially loved to play the organ because “it was different.” He continued to pursue this love by volunteering to play the organ for the Community Church at Garden Spot Village. Dwane continued to play until June 2020, when he fully retired after 78 years of worship. Dwane says, “Thanks to all who have prayed, sent cards, and declared that you liked my music. You heard what I was playing, but I really wanted my music to ‘Praise the Lord’.”

*ART TALK

December 15, Tuesday 7pm, GSV-TV

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AT GARDEN SPOT VILLAGE

Topic: Christmas in Great Art Presenter: Win Reber, GSV Art Guild Chair In the year 590 A.D., Pope Gregory said, “Painting can do for the illiterate, what writing can do for those who read.” As a result, paintings and sculptures were created to illustrate the stories from the Bible and placed in churches throughout the world. Great paintings that illustrate the Birth of Christ were used to illustrate this wonderful story. Win Reber will use them again to tell this important story. Many of the paintings used will be familiar, and many will not…. but when they are put together, they tell a beautiful story.

It is the story of Einstein's wife, a brilliant physicist in her own right, whose contribution to the special theory of relativity is hotly debated and may have been inspired by her own profound and very personal insight.

Help re-open Pangani School: In October, Garden Spot Village began a partnership with Missions of Hope International (MOHI), a holistic ministry serving children and families in disadvantaged communities throughout Kenya and sharing the love of Jesus with more than 30,000 children. Here are the ways you can participate:

Pray: Pray for the children and families engaged with MOHI. Sponsor a child: For $38 a month you can sponsor a

child. Your monthly sponsorship supports a Christian education, provides nutritious food, medical care and the opportunity to hear the life-changing message of Jesus Christ. To sponsor a child, stop by the sponsorship table in the Apartment Suites Lobby from 10:30am-1:30pm each Monday and Thursday through December 3.

Due to government regulations, MOHI is required to make significant changes to the school in order to ensure that children stay healthy; a onetime gift can help make these safety upgrades. Donations can be given at the sponsorship table on Mon & Thu through Dec 3.

Shop: Join us on Sunday, December 6,

11:30am-2pm, MOHI will host another Pop-Up Fair Trade Market in the Village Park. Stop by to enjoy Kenyan finger food and browse the handcrafted jewelry, African fabric bags, baskets and gifts that are made at MOHI’s adult training school in the slums of Mathare Valley and visit the child sponsorship table. A limited number of people will be in the market at a time. 100% of the proceeds go to MOHI.
