GARDEN SPOT VILLAGE BUSINESS CIRCLE

The Garden Spot Village Business Circle was started in 2020 to increase giving from businesses to Garden Spot Village. This special group of businesses helps to enrich the lives of older adults through generous sponsorships/gifts. Some businesses may have an interest in sponsoring all events, while other businesses may just select one event. When Garden Spot Village has a project or special campaign for construction, gifts toward those special opportunities can also be counted toward a Business Circle membership. A business becomes a Business Circle member when its tax deductible sponsorships/gifts total more than $1,000 annually. Listed below are the levels for the Business Circle and the 2020 members to date.

“I feel like a kid again,” said a resident as she prepared to turn in some beadwork items to be judged at our Harvest Week Exhibition Hall. Scores of items were accepted and judged in our first-ever farm show style exhibit during Harvest Week. This was one of the new things incorporated into this remix of our annual Fall Festival. About 150 people attended the Harvest Hymn Sing, led by residents, to kick off the week. We were able to feature artists throughout the week in the Apartment Suites Lobby, and residents and staff could bid on gift baskets in the Indoor Park. This is the first year for the resident and staff Baskets of Bounty competition. The Gardens East Chocolatiers won with the Chocolate Wagon basket, bidding at $250. They will receive a trophy to keep throughout the year, as well as a sweet treat to share. Residents could still count on the chicken BBQ and apple dumplings, as well as other “Fair Fare” favorites like chicken rivel soup, fried Oreos, French fries, hamburgers and ice cream. Friday and Saturday of Harvest Week, the Country Store was open for shopping in the Chapel. More than $3,000 was generated for the Benevolent Fund through the store. The culminating competition remained the Apple Pie Contest. We had eight entries, and the winners are: First Place- Marie Diehl, Second Place-Alice Cochran and Third Place- Christy Turner. In the hopes that we could resume some of our Fall Festival fun, Harvest Week gave us the opportunity to try some new things. Many thanks to all the residents and staff who participated.

OPENING WINDOWS INTO WORSHIP

An All Saint's Observance in the Celtic Tradition OCTOBER 31, SATURDAY 6:02PM, CHAPEL & GSV-TV LIVE BROADCAST The chaplains invite all of GSV to gather together to remember the saints and Saints in their lives, those who have passed on to the great cloud of witnesses, as well as those who walk among us, keeping us safe and loving us through these months of the pandemic. Music with piano and bagpipes will blend Celtic and All Saints themes, as will the prayers. Chaplain Karyn Nancarvis will offer a brief reflection on the scripture, followed by a simple ritual of remembrance that everyone is invited to participate, whether in the Chapel or in your home. Photos of all GSV residents who have passed away will be shown on the screen at the end of the service. Let’s plan to be in community as we remember and give thanks for the “big S” and the “little s” saints in our lives. Watch the Announcements and CATIE for any updates. Attendance in the Chapel is limited to 25 persons. Sign up at Resident Services.

In October, Garden Spot Village began a partnership with Missions of Hope International (MOHI), a holistic ministry serving children and families in disadvantaged communities throughout Kenya. Over the past 20 years, MOHI has built more than 25 schools, impacted tens of thousands of families, and shared the love of Jesus with more than 30,000 children. Here are the ways you can participate:

Pray: Pray for the children and families engaged in MOHI ministries.

Sponsor a child: For $38 a month you can sponsor a child. Your monthly sponsorship supports a Christian

education, provides nutritious food, medical care and the opportunity to hear the life-changing message of Jesus Christ. To sponsor a child, stop by the sponsorship table in the Apartment Suites Lobby from 10:30am-1:30pm each Monday and Thursday through December 3 (except 11/26).

Help re-open the Pangani School: Due to government regulations, MOHI is required to make significant changes to the school in order to ensure that children stay healthy and safe through the pandemic; a one-time gift can help make these safety upgrades. Donations can be given at the sponsorship table on Mon & Thu through Dec 3. Shop: Join us on Sunday, December 6, 11:30am-2pm, MOHI will host a Pop-Up Fair Trade Market. Stop by the Village Park to enjoy Kenyan finger food and browse the handcrafted jewelry, African fabric bags, baskets and gifts that are made at MOHI’s adult training school in the slums of Mathare Valley. All market proceeds go to MOHI. Schedule subject to change. Watch CATIE for updates.

SOCIAL SERVICES Sherilyn Lapp, Director of Social Services COMMUNITY SUPPORT GROUPS

All groups are limited to GSV residents at this time.

LIVING WITH LOSS GROUP NOVEMBER 2, MONDAY 10am, Gardens West Conference Room Topic: Gratitude in Grief Facilitator: Jenny Snyder *Please note new date and location for this group*

In the fog of grief, it can be difficult to remember the things for which we are grateful. This in no way minimizes the depth of loss and grief, but pauses to acknowledge the blessings, past, present and future that you have experienced and continue to experience. This group is for people who have experienced the death of a loved one. Please RSVP to Jenny (6259).

CAREGIVER’S SUPPORT GROUP NOVEMBER 9, MONDAY 10am, Concord Room Topic: Connections Facilitators: Marcia Parson, Leah Amstutz

This meeting will be an opportunity for GSV caregivers to have conversation together, to connect with others walking a similar road of caring for a loved one. We will not have a speaker but will share informally the joys and challenges faced in the past few months. During this time together, we will especially focus on the value of human connections and how to enhance them during this challenging time of COVID restrictions. Please RSVP to Marcia (6239) by November 6.

LOW VISION SUPPORT GROUP NOVEMBER 12, THURSDAY 3pm, Garden Towers Presenter: Jonathan D Andrews, O.D. Topic: Advancements in Cataract Surgery Facilitator: Lisa Morgan

This meeting will be a time for GSV residents dealing with low vision issues to connect and share with each other. Dr Jonathan Andrews of Andrews Eye Corporation will join us to give an update on advancements in cataract surgery. Please RSVP to Lisa (6171) by November 10.

PARKINSON’S DISEASE SUPPORT GROUP NOVEMBER 23, MONDAY 2pm, Garden Towers Video: The Parkinson's you don’t see: Cognitive and Non-Motor Symptoms Facilitator: Sherilyn Lapp

Parkinson's Disease involves much more than managing tremors. The Living Well Challenge has produced an excellent half hour video about lesser-known symptoms related to Parkinson's. Presenter Joanne Hamilton, Ph.D., discusses "You are neither lazy or crazy" and gives creative suggestions for those with the disease and care partners. Discussion to follow. Please RSVP to Sherilyn (6264) by November 20.

National Memory Screening Day NOVEMBER 16, 2020

Memory screens are simple, short evaluations that check memory and thinking skills. There are four nationally recognized tools; the GPCOG (General Practitioner Assessment of Cognition), MINI-COG, MIS (Memory Impairment Screen) and BAS (Brief Alzheimer’s Screening); that can be given by social workers, doctors, physician assistants, psychologists or other trained professionals. Results are confidential and shared with the person evaluated. A screen is a beneficial indication of a person’s need for further assistance but is not used to give a diagnosis. Last year the GSV Social Services team and psychologists from Physis Associates conducted no-cost, in-person memory screens. We hope to do that again when COVID restrictions are lifted. However, there is another great option for now! Appointments for a confidential virtual memory screening can be scheduled, call AFA 866-232-8484.

Medicare Open Enrollment

OCTOBER 15 – DECEMBER 7, 2020 Call Resident Services (6000) if you would like to schedule an appointment to review your Medicare D Prescription Drug plan with a member of the Social Services Team.

SHARING WITH SUPPORTIVE FRIENDS NOVEMBER 18, WEDNESDAY 10am, Prayer and Meditation Room Facilitator: Jenny Snyder

VILLAGE FIRSTS

Colleen Musselman, Director of Life Enrichment

Chick Wenzel:

First to Teach Others How to Tell their Own Stories written by Juanita Fox, Storyteller

Chick and Nancy Wenzel moved to Garden Spot Village from Wayne, Pa in the middle of a snowstorm in February 2006. They quickly found various ways to engage with their community, including volunteering with the library, driving the Jolly Trolley and more. Having served as the Archivist for the nearly three hundred year old Welsh Society in Philadelphia, Chick sought out the Archives Room. The Archives Manager, Ken Wendel quickly put him to work helping residents record their histories in the Story Booth, a unique recording studio in the Archives Room in the basement of Gardens West. Chick found that many people who wanted to share their family histories had difficulty trying to find a manner through which they could tell their story. He prepared guidelines that were expanded into a two hour program entitled “How to Gather Your Family Information” and “Various Formats for Composing Your Story.” Chick invited a few residents to tell their story about the tools and programs they used. The first seminar was filled quickly so additional programs were held to accommodate interested residents. As a result, more than forty people recorded their personal and family stories and many more opted to put theirs in print. This seminar and resources, coupled with the Story Booth in the Archive Room, is an amazing gift that Chick shares with his community. The Story Booth allows Garden Spot Village residents to share their life stories with their family members through a recording that is transferred to a CD or flash drive. Chick shares that people have recorded their stories in many ways. Sometimes an individual spends time reflecting on their own, other times a spouse, child or grandchild joins them for the recording process. “A recording of your life story is a good present for the holidays,” Chick says. “Instead of a tie or a scarf, you can give your family a lasting memory.” To learn more about the Story Booth or to receive copies of the resources he developed to help people share their life stories, contact Chick at (6938) or 717.355.6938.

VOLUNTEER SERVICES Deborah Fast, Director of Volunteer Services BARRY SCHULIGER: Building Community written Abigail O’Neill, GSV Intern

During a stroll through the Village Square, you may find a group of residents laughing and playing games on an afternoon. Chances are, among the group you will find Barry Schuliger and his wife Lois. The reason Barry and Lois play games with many of their fellow residents is to create more friendships within the community. Barry has always valued the importance of connections and friendships in life. With these friendships, the couple has traveled all over the world and Barry typically serves as the planner for these adventures. Barry’s planned trips include: two European river boat trips, travels to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Ireland, the National Parks, and many more. In addition to planning travels, Barry has planned his family reunions in Lancaster for years. It is these constant visits to Pennsylvania that made the couple comfortable in the area. Barry had always loved Lancaster County for its entertainment options and small theatres. The Schuliger’s made the move to Garden Spot Village in April 2020 and say “We love it here. It’s a great place to live.” Although they have not been in the community very long, Barry wasted no time getting involved. Volunteering is nothing new for Barry, as he has been volunteering for most of his life. Through his church, community, and travel, Barry’s service heart has reached the lives of many. Barry has worked through countless services at St. Matthew’s UMC and the Bowie Community doing anything from committee work to coaching youth sports. At Garden Spot Village, Barry packages the to-go orders at the Harvest Table throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. With these challenging times, Barry has also helped residents connect with their families. Barry serves the residents and their families by helping them connect through utilizing iPads and running the FaceTime application. He continues his volunteer time through flower deliveries and assisting in the Shady Maple grocery deliveries. Barry and Lois have four sons and 11 grandchildren, living all over the United States. Barry shared that prior to their life at Garden Sot Village, the family lived in Bowie,, Maryland for 53 years. From Maryland, Barry and Lois visited 12 other retirement communities before being drawn to Garden Spot Village. Barry was attracted to the social opportunities at Garden Spot and the core Christian values of the community. “We made a really good decision to come here.”

HOLIDAY MAIL DELIVERY Your mail delivery volunteers are gearing up for the busy holiday season. Please help them continue to provide excellent service during this time of high volume mail. • Be sure that your family and friends have your correct address, including the apartment number as appropriate. • Be sure to write a return address on all mail you send. • Do not write anything on any piece of mail that does not belong to you. • The GSV mail room does not sell stamps. EXERCISE GRATITUDE - 30 DAY CHALLENGE

I challenge you to exercise 30 days of gratitude. Each day has a simple suggestion to cultivate a spirit of Thanksgiving. Take a few moments to count your blessings and fill in what you are thankful for. There is always something (even during a pandemic) for which to be grateful.
