OPENING WINDOWS INTO WORSHIP An All Saint's Observance in the Celtic Tradition OCTOBER 31, SATURDAY 6pm, Chapel & GSV-TV Live Broadcast

Worship can happen anywhere, anytime and so, what would have been St. Patrick in the spring, will now be All Saints in the fall. The chaplains invite all of GSV to gather together to remember the Saints and saints in their lives-those who have passed on to the great cloud of witnesses, as well as those who walk among us, keeping us safe and loving us through these months of the pandemic. Music with piano and bagpipes will blend Celtic and All Saints themes, as will the prayers. Chaplain Karyn Nancarvis will offer a brief reflection on the scripture, followed by a simple ritual of remembrance. Everyone is invited to participate in, whether you are in the Chapel or in your home. Let’s plan to be in community as we remember and give thanks for the “big S” and the “little s” saints in our lives. Watch the Announcements and CATIE for any updates. Attendance in the Chapel will be limited to 25 persons. Sign up at Resident Services. Everyone will be able to join on GSV-TV Channel 956.

Medicare Annual Open Enrollment OCTOBER 15 THROUGH DECEMBER 7, 2020

Resist requests to give out any personal information to a stranger who contacts you via mail, computer or phone. You may: • Consider returning to Traditional Medicare if dissatisfied with your Medicare Advantage Plan • Change your Supplemental Plan (for those with Traditional Medicare) • Switch from one Medicare Advantage Plan to a different Advantage Plan • Add, change, or drop Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage

IMPORTANT TIPS

• Your Social Worker can provide a general explanation of the difference between an Advantage Plan and Traditional Medicare. Please consult an insurance agent for specific advice or to make changes. • APPRISE counselors with the PA Department of Aging can also answer your questions about Medicare. Call Lancaster County Office of Aging, 717.299.7979, to schedule a counseling session. (Virtual only) • Insist that any insurance broker/counselor confirms In Network compatibility of all medical providers you may utilize in 2021, including Garden Spot Village Skilled Nursing, with an Advantage Plan before you sign. Out of Network fees can be substantial. • A significant benefit of Traditional Medicare is not needing to deal with In Network/Out of Network considerations.

MEDICARE PART D - PRESCRIPTION DRUG PLANS

The Social Services team will continue the annual tradition of providing complementary consultations for residents with Traditional Medicare who wish to review their Medicare D Prescription Drug plan. Your medications and preferred pharmacy are entered into Medicare's website for a best fit/lowest cost comparative plan review. If you choose to change plans, we can complete the enrollment for you. Schedule an appointment by calling Resident Services (6000). All consultations will take place in the Chapel Parlor. Please arrive promptly. Bring all your medications in their original containers and your Medicare, health insurance, and current prescription plan cards. Please note this Caution! • Do not schedule a Medicare D appointment with Social Services if you have Rx coverage as part of a Medicare Advantage Plan or Retirement Benefit package. You will need to work through your retirement plan administrator or an insurance broker so that you do not lose valuable benefits. • If you utilize benefits from PACE/PACENET, it is also unnecessary to schedule an appointment with Social Services. The program will automatically assign a Medicare D plan to you. Interested in completing your own Medicare D review? Watch the informative, step by step video posted by the Social Services team in the video gallery on CATIE (available October 19).

Garden Spot Crafters Support Local Students written by Rachel Hungerford, Marketing Intern

Garden Spot residents have had a relationship with New Holland Elementary School students for some time. Over the years, some residents have written letters to students as pen pals, while others have invited kids to spend time in the Woodshop. In the era of COVID, residents have interacted in a more distanced way: by sewing masks for children to wear for the 2020-2021 school year. In July, Maria Buck, the administrative assistant at New Holland Elementary reached out to Colleen Musselman, Life Enrichment director, to see if Garden Spot might have residents who would want to sew masks for children. When the Crafter’s agreed to make masks, the school requested 100 masks for students who may have lost their masks, forgotten them, or don’t have the financial means to pay for one. Since March, the Crafters and others who sew have made thousands of masks for friends, neighbors and local medical facilities. Overall, residents have donated $525 to purchase masks from the Crafters, with all sales being donated directly to the Benevolent Fund. Those who sew are making the students’ masks out of cotton fabric from their stash in the quilt room on the ground floor of Gardens South. Some—like Hagar Scott, Garden Spot Village resident since December 2012—are especially excited to be using fun, printed patterns for the masks—everything from pink elephants and Minnie Mouse to trucks and stars. The masks are two-sided, with the patterned side facing outward, so that kids know how to wear them correctly. Since the masks are smaller, fabric scraps can be repurposed as well as, using full bolts of cloth. “They won’t be much to make,” says Hagar with a smile. The process is fairly simple: patterns are cut, fabrics are stitched, folded and topstitched. Two pieces of elastic are threaded through channels on either side of the mask with a needle, and then tied individually to create ear loops. Since the elastic is not sewn to the fabric of the mask, the loops can be adjusted if they are too big or too small. And the masks aren’t pleated, so fidgety children can’t dislodge them from the proper placement on their faces, but they can still breathe easily while wearing. Having a collection of fabric is appreciated. “There’s always something,” Hagar says. “It’s really nice.” People who move in can donate their old fabric for common use. When residents clean out their spaces, they usually donate more. What Garden Spot doesn’t want, goes to the Mennonite Central Committee. In the end, the fabric is used somehow—everybody wins. Besides the plans for the elementary students’ masks, plans include fall- and Christmas-themed masks. But no matter what they’re making, the group always finds a way to serve others with their skills and have fun while doing so.

VOLUNTEER SERVICES Deborah Fast, Director of Volunteer Services SHARING AND CARING

We started this year with the theme Volunteers Value Community and the following quote: "The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members." – Coretta Scott King. This has been a year of community in so many ways – although we’ve needed to find new ways of being community here at Garden Spot Village, in the face of restrictions due to COVID-19. One special focus of this community is the Share & Care shop. Much more than just a thrift store, the Share & Care has been a source of support to residents and their families in transition, a financial contribution to the GSV Benevolent Fund and also a social venue for many residents who enjoy a nearby location to interact with others. Sadly, over the course of several months this year, the Share & Care needed to be closed. But we were not entirely dormant! Thanks to the tireless efforts of volunteers who sorted donations, cleaned and re-organized the shop, and who worked with staff to develop new safety protocols, we were able to re-open. And as the weeks have passed, business has gradually increased. We’re happy to report that, even without our normal community customers, our sales for the first two months of reopening were the following: July $4,445 | August $4,058 This includes our wonderful National Thrift Shop Day Sale, August 17, which resulted in $839 sales in one day! We want to, as always, thank everyone who contributes to the success of Share & Care through volunteering, with your contributions of items to sell and by shopping. This community in action helps many people in many different ways, and is something we all share.

LIL WINDLE: Serving with Love, Laughter and a Smile written by Jaunita Fox, Storyteller

“I’m one of those people who keep busy all the time. I LOVE to be busy. It keeps me out of trouble,” Lil Windle says with a laugh. Lil, who moved to her Gardens North apartment December 2017, stays busy, connecting with her neighbors and volunteering. Most recently, she added the screening table at the Village Square and the Apartment Suites Lobby to her volunteering schedule. Some weeks she fills in at the table up to five times. She thrives in the role because it allows her to interact with guests. “I enjoy working at the screening table. I love the interaction with people,” she says. Her other volunteer roles connect her with people too! She volunteers in Share & Care and Linden, hands out fasnachts on Fasnacht Day and helps with special events like Fall Festival and Race Day. She especially enjoys participating in the pen pal program with New Holland Elementary School and serves on Apartment Council, representing her neighbors in monthly meetings. She also participates in Lighter Side Players and the Bell Choir and participates in “Hall Parties” on her floor. These planned events connect neighbors and build relationships, transforming neighbors into family. Volunteering and community involvement isn’t new for Lil. She lived for many years in Cochranville, working at Lukens Steel Mill in Coatesville and volunteering as a Sunday School teacher and choir director at her church, Cochranville United Methodist. She started a choir, Golden Agers in 1995. The group, made up of about 25 singers aged 60+, sang at local churches and retirement communities, including Garden Spot Village! She brings a positive outlook to all she does. “I like to be positive about everything. I laugh a lot. When something comes up, good or bad, I try to see the fun of it or see the good in it.” Lil loves her home at Garden Spot. Her only regret? “I wish I had moved to Garden Spot Village earlier,” she says. And, she encourages people to get involved with the community by volunteering. She says, “I constantly tell people to volunteer. I tell them, ‘Don’t complain to me that you’re bored. There are many opportunities for things to do. Whether it’s folding towels in the laundry, staffing the screening table at the entrances or helping in Share & Care, volunteer services will use you!’”
