FALL FESTIVAL COLLECTION AND PREPARATION | HOW CAN YOU HELP? Fall Festival will be here before we know it! This FUNdraiser is in its 23rd year, with proceeds going to the Benevolent Fund, which benefits residents, who for reasons beyond their control, have exhausted their financial resources. Fall Festival will be held on Saturday, October 12, with the Chapel opening on Friday, October 11, at noon, for shopping at the Country Store, and for the opportunity to begin placing bids on silent auction items. As in recent years, our Country Store and Silent Auction will feature gift baskets, gift certificates, and handcrafted items, as well as one-of-a-kind experiences. Quilts will be for sale, as well as unique items from the crafters and woodshop. We very much appreciate residents who donate items for use in the Fall Festival. We are looking for handcrafted items for the silent auction, such as wall-hangings, paintings, knitted items, wooden items, etc. Do you have NEW items that can be used to create gift baskets for the silent auction? We are looking for jams/jellies, children’s items, stationery, cooking utensils, bath products, etc. Items will be collected on Thursday, August 29 and Wednesday, September 4, 9am-12pm outside the Administrative Offices. Call Allison (6153) with questions. Thank you for supporting this great event.

ART GUILD

written by Amanda Weaver, GSC Marketing Intern If you lived at Garden Spot Village in 2006, you probably remember the indoor gardens that people could walk through and benches to sit on while admiring the flowers and trees. A show of artwork was displayed throughout the garden for a few days, which was a new addition that year. In early 2008, the idea of an Art Guild was proposed to Life Enrichment by Win Reber, artist. In March, a group of 15 different artists of all varieties, wood workers, sculptors, painters, etc., had their first unofficial meeting, and October of the same year, the Art Guild held its first official meeting. The Art Guild attempted to operate using a board of directors with no chairman, but rather, a committee of the whole. They soon returned to the traditional structure of elected officers, with a board of directors. What does the Art Guild do? The guild’s mission is “To bring art to everyday life at Garden Spot Village,” says Win. Since December 2008, the guild has been responsible for artwork, changed monthly, in the Main Street Art Gallery, located in the hallway between the Terrace Dining Room and the Harvest Table. Guild members host monthly meetings, classes, lectures, and demonstrations about artwork and how to refine and build skills. All classes are taught by members of the Guild. The classes can last anywhere from one to six weeks. Everything the Art Guild does is open to members and non-members. One popular event is to host Inspire Your Heart with Art Day, which is held January 31 each year. What benefits are there to joining the Art Guild if all the activities are open? Occasionally, the Art Guild will hold a members-only art exhibit. There are no transportation fees for art guild members and some class fees are complimentary. The Guild also has an art studio that only members may use to work and store art. It’s only $15 to join the club for the year and the only requirement is to be a resident at GSV. There are currently 54 family unit members. If you’re interested in joining the Art Guild, contact Clarice Prescott (6360).

It’s an amazing experience and one that lasts a lifetime. To get into the basket of most hot air balloons you have to crawl over the side. A basket with a door was specifically made with Garden Spot Village in mind, making it easy to get in and out. One of the bonuses of our hot air balloon is that, as a resident, you can buy discounted tickets from Resident Services. Call (6000) to learn more.

SCAM PREVENTION FOR SENIORS MONDAY, AUGUST 12, 2PM, CHAPEL Presenter: Jerry Mitchell, Pennsylvania Attorney General, Office of Public Engagement Scams used to be relatively easy to spot: emails with misspellings, letters without company logos, calls from rude, pushy salespersons not schooled in gaining trust, etc. That has changed. Scamming has risen to a highly sophisticated, difficult to detect criminal activity; one that regularly targets older adults. Educating yourself and remaining vigilant are powerful deterrents against becoming a fraud victim. According to the National Council on Aging, (Scams to Watch Out for in 2019 by Brandy Bauer. 1-29-19) the following three scams will be foisted on many seniors this year: • Social Security spoofing calls in which callers claim to be from the Social Security Administration and threaten victims with arrest, legal action or suspended SS numbers if personal information is not provided • Grandparent scams from callers claiming a grandchild is in trouble and needs money immediately • Bogus Disaster Relief/Charity organization appeals via websites, Facebook, telephone, email or in person Other common fraud tactics used on Seniors include: • Instilling fear/sense of urgency, creating little time to process or think rationally • Notification that a huge prize has been won but cash fees must be paid first before the "prize" can be delivered • Pretending to be associated with a credible company or government agency in order to fake legitimacy, then accessing personal information or gaining a required payment over the phone • Robocalls that ask simple questions requiring yes answers, enabling a scammer to record the verbal response, so it can be used to approve charges on a credit card • Pop-up notices that a computer needs to be fixed. • Many other tactics abound. The FBI warns that scammers change tactics frequently. How can you protect yourself? • Use caller ID and voicemail to screen calls, do not answer or return calls from unfamiliar numbers. • Immediately HANG UP if asked for personal information or threatened with punitive action. • Remember the adage, If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. • Don't be pressured; take time to thoroughly investigate the legitimacy of an investment opportunity or charity appeal. • Be wary and alert. Report scam attempts that you encounter. • Brochures available outside Social Services Office - Senior Safe: Protect your money and accounts from scams, exploitation and identity theft. It is a rare day that the Social Services team does not hear about a scam attempt experienced by someone on campus. In order to learn more, attend a presentation by the PA Attorney General’s Office, August 12, 2pm in the Chapel.

VOLUNTEER SERVICES Deborah Fast, Director of Volunteer Services LIVES OF SERVICE: TONY DER KINDEREN

“I volunteer doing audio-video in the Chapel and the Theater,” says Tony der Kinderen, Garden Spot Village resident since May 2018. “I’ve gravitated to the video because it allows me to explore my artistic side. I like experimenting and getting different camera angles.” Tony volunteers two to three times each week, helping with special events like Servant Stage productions and other concerts. He says, “Volunteering gives me a sense of worth and keeps my mind sharp. Volunteering is also a way to interact and meet others, as well as express my artistic abilities.” Before moving to Garden Spot, Tony and Arlene volunteered regularly at Ware Presbyterian Village, which was near their home in Oxford, Pennsylvania. Tony, who took ballroom dancing lessons for years and taught at an Arthur Murray studio for a year, taught ballroom dancing classes and served as a DJ for ballroom dancing events at Ware Presbyterian Village. Shortly after Tony and Arlene moved to Garden Spot, they shared that they enjoyed ballroom dancing with Colleen Musselman, Life Enrichment director. Colleen invited them to host a ballroom dancing show. The der Kinderens partnered with another couple to host a two-hour variety show style event, that included dancing demonstrations, short stories, audience participation and more. In addition, Tony and Arlene embrace the abundant opportunities to live with purpose in community by regularly joining the Lunch Bunch, participating in Dining around the World and Wellness Adventures like zip lining and go-karting. Tony is also a member of the Wood Shop, Lighter Side Players and the Computer Users Group. A few months ago he did a presentation for the Computer Users Group on how to upgrade your computer to a solid state hard drive. Tony also volunteers to help with the 1/2 Marathon and 10K each spring. Tony looks forward to future volunteer opportunities, including possibly teaching a tai chi class and a ballroom dancing class for wellness this fall.

WELLNESS AUGUST IS FAMILY & FRIENDS MONTH / SOCIAL WELLNESS There are eight Facets to the Framework of your wellness. They are Fitness, Faith, Finances, Footprint, Food, Family & Friends, Feelings and Focus. Pick up your copy of the Family & Friends Calendar at the Wellness Lobby or the Apartment Suites Welcome Center. Family & Friends Month is a time to focus on nurturing oneself and one’s relationships. Social wellness focuses on the giving and receiving of social support, identifying the network of friends and family an individual can turn to in times of crisis, as well as times of celebration, and ways to keep relationships healthy. Since social support acts as a buffer against adverse life events, it is especially vital for seniors to have a strong social network in place and, to have ways to grow and nurture that social network. Volunteering or pursuing a hobby, are ways for seniors to gain valuable social interaction and grow their relationships. • People who have a strong social network tend to live longer. • The heart and blood pressure of people with healthy relationships respond better to stress. • Strong social networks are associated with a healthier endocrine system and healthier cardiovascular functioning. • Healthy social networks enhance the immune system’s ability to fight off infectious diseases.
