LIGHTER-SIDE PLAYERS

written by Amanda Weaver, GSC Marketing Intern In 2013 Garden Spot Village’s Lighter-Side Players debuted with Dénouement and 12 actors. Five years later in 2018, the cast and crew combined was approximately 60 people. The group actually formed in 2012 by four people: Barry and Anne Block, Erma Kauffman, and Fran Rapp. Dénouement was an original play inspired by the popular show Downton Abbey and written by John O’Hara, a friend of Fran Rapp. Now there is a core of ten people who lead the Lighter-Side Players and meet once a month. “Throughout the years, we’ve tried different things,” says Fran. “We’ve done original and published plays, skits, and every other year, a Resident Variety Show. Performing with ‘script in hand’ seems to work best for us, so there is no need for memorizing of lines!” “Garden Spot Village has always been so supportive in helping us stage the shows and the royalties,” the Lighter-Side Players say with the deepest gratitude. The Lighter-Side Players perform every year in spring, as well as for small social events, New Year’s Eve, Overly’s Grove, GSV band concerts and the New Holland Senior Center. They perform for three out of the four seasons and take summer off for a break. Outside of acting with the Lighter-Side Players, one active member, Nancy Dolan, acts with the local community theatre, Cavod. Her most recent show with Cavod was My Fair Lady in December 2018. Not all the work for the Lighter-Side Players is on stage. For those who would prefer to be behind the scenes rather than in the spotlight, there are other crews you can join; from backstage work with costumes and props, to the technical work with lights and sound. “When people act, you see someone you know really well pretend to be someone else. They turn into a completely different character and it’s fun to watch and make people smile, laugh or shed a tear,” says Fran. This year, the production has been scheduled for September.

As you get older, your immune system weakens, and it can become more difficult to fight off infections. If you have an ongoing health condition — like diabetes or heart disease — getting vaccinated is extremely important. This primary care clinic has topof-the-line medical care, physical therapy services, vision care, and mental health support. If you are already enrolled with the VA for primary medical care, you would be eligible to utilize the amenities at this facility. VOLUNTEER SERVICES Deborah Fast, Director of Volunteer Services CELEBRATING GRATITUDE VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION 2019

Every volunteer at Garden Spot Village and Maple Farm makes a difference in the lives of other residents, and to the life of our community as a whole. We are so grateful for the way that our volunteers enrich others’ lives, and for the ways that their lives are also enriched. Each year during National Volunteer Week in April, Volunteer Services recognizes those who have reached landmarks in their service. At our Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast on Saturday, April 27, we presented the following awards: 2,000 Hours Mildred Groff | Betty Hershey | Anne Hutson Mike Lanyon | Sally Mittelstadt | Sally Rapp Edward Smith | Paul Snader | Charlie Till 4,000 Hours

LIVES OF SERVICE: CHRISTEL HUXLEY

“When someone walks into Share & Care or Linden I always say, ‘If I can talk you into anything, just let me know.’ They turn and laugh and by that time we’re friends,” says Christel Huxley, as she explains how she greets shoppers during her weekly volunteer shifts at Share & Care and Linden. Her loving spirit turns anyone into a friend, whether she’s working with the prayer shawl ministry, beginning to serve as the recording secretary for the Art Guild or sorting mail on Saturday mornings for Village Square Apartments. She recently helped to re-establish the monthly Prayer Shawl meetings. The group meets on the second Thursday of each month at the long table, located at the entrance to Village Square Park. “We all enjoy coming for the fellowship,” Christel says. “This past month Marian Harnish read thank you notes from people who received our shawls. We had a wonderful time. It’s so good to have a monthly meeting again.” When she moved to Garden Spot Village in July 2008, Christel had recently retired from a high stress teaching position and was facing significant health issues related to stress. Today her health is significantly improved. She says, “I told my doctor my health plan was to be grateful, happy, friendly and to do something useful.” For Christel, volunteering is key. Since moving to Garden Spot, Christel has served in a variety of ways – from working at the Welcome Center in the Apartment Suites Lobby to serving on the Apartment Council to sitting on the steering committee which led to the establishment of The Community Church and faithfully helping to produce the Garden Variety every month from March 2009 through December 2014. Christel loves to serve. It’s a natural extension of her grateful spirit. “I’m just really grateful that God has blessed me, given me the opportunity to live at Garden Spot Village and be surrounded by friends. This is such a lovely place to call home. I have loved every minute of the last 11 years.”
