MISSION TEAM TRAVELED WITH PURPOSE TO NC

Thirteen individuals traveled to North Carolina March 23-3, in order to make a difference in the lives of individuals who were impacted by hurricane Matthew in 2016. This is the second time that a team went from Garden Spot Village and Mount Gretna United Methodist Church. Residents on the trip included Gary and Sharon Amey, Don Gray, Paul and Janie Hutton and Lloyd Ziegler. Employees included Cathy Bauer, Fanny Dobbs, Linda Dodge and husband Carlton, and Chet Yoder. Eric Lin and Nouka Moua, the IVEPers at Garden Spot Village and Maple Farm, also participated. The group was comfortable staying at the United Methodist Church Disaster Response Center in Tarboro where there were dormitories with good mattresses, showers and a kitchen. We had a sunny room when gathering for meals and game nights. Just outside that room, was a nice patio area. Some team members stayed in their RVs since the center had an RV area. The team worked on the home of an 85-year old woman named Fanny. She moved to the house in Princeville (next to Tarboro) with her three sons in the 1980s after her husband passed away. Sadly, she and her sons were impacted by the 1999 flood and again by hurricane Matthew in 2016. She was most appreciative of the work completed by the team and looks forward to the day that she and her sons are back in their home. Inside the house, rooms were painted, flooring was installed, windows were framed and electric outlets and light switches were installed. Outside work was done on a shed, a side porch was removed, lots of trash was loaded into a trailer and the grass was mowed. Each year, many teams from a number of states volunteer in Tarboro. We were blessed that our team was asked to build the large cross for the UMC Disaster Response Center where we stayed. This cross is lit at night and can be seen from the road. The team is appreciative of all the prayers and many items that were donated for the trip. The casseroles and other food items were delicious. We also appreciate the financial support of the Community Church at Garden Spot Village that made this trip possible. Please keep residents of Tarboro and Princeville in your prayers. There are many still waiting to get back into their homes or to get a new home after having their homes damaged or destroyed more than two years ago.

Women are invited to join a Bible study: Jesus, a man of action, as told by Mark. This is the first of the Gospels to be written. We will study the book as a whole rather than chapter by chapter. Who was Mark? Why did he write and how is this Gospel different? What does it tell us about Jesus?

VILLAGE VOICES

written by Amanda Weaver, GSC Marketing Intern “Music touches a person’s soul,” says Mickey Adams, current director of the GSV Village Voices, and you’re guaranteed to move at least one person in a crowd of 800 people. Each spring in May, the Village Voices give a two-night concert with anywhere from four to eight part harmony in the Chapel. There are 65 people in the chorus currently and the group is still accepting members. Mickey says, “The group takes music seriously, but ourselves not so much. We strive for an enjoyable time for ourselves and the audience.” Shortly after Garden Spot Village opened in 1996, a small choir was made up of people who liked to sing, led by Alice Zimmerman. Then in 2004, Abby Eberly took the position as the director for the group, and decided it was time to name the small choir. They chose Village Voices. Between 2004 to 2014, a few other members of the group took on the role as the director, until Mickey Adams accepted the role and continues today. The group has decided that their goal is to be the best senior citizen chorus in Pennsylvania, and to accomplish their goal, they rehearse every Friday morning from 9:30-11am. The Village Voices are active throughout the entire year, singing for different occasions. Their main event every May is the spring concert, and this year’s theme is “From Spirited to Spiritual.” Some of their past themes for this concert have been “Give My Regards to Broadway,” “Hats Off to Our Favorite Things” and “The Music of Our Lives.” Most of their music is either accompanied by piano or organ. The Village Voices have partnered with the Garden Spot Village Ringers for some of their music. Some other events that the Village Voices sing for are Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, Musical Memories, Good Friday and the Christmas Nativity. The Village Voices also travel to sing at other retirement communities. The success and operation behind the Village Voices is due to the director, the accompanists and the board of directors. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Village Voices, contact Mickey Adams (6829).

SOCIAL SERVICES CORNER

UTILIZING ALL THE BENEFITS OF A CONTINUING CARE COMMUNITY — CELEBRATING ONE FAMILY’S JOURNEY Garden Spot Village offers a beautiful campus with different living options based upon a person’s needs. Those who enter Garden Spot Village in an independent living setting have the opportunity to transition to different levels of care as needs arise. What does it really look like to use those different levels of care? Below are some reassuring thoughts from family member, Susan Clark. Susan’s parents, Bud and Ginny Schofield, resided in an apartment and transitioned to different levels of care as their needs changed. What would you want to convey to others who are assisting their loved one in transitioning to another level of care? Susan: My father moved from an apartment in Village Square to a private room in the Memory Support area, Laurel View. He lived in Laurel View for a year and a half, then spent his final weeks with hospice care in Skilled Nursing. My mother moved from the VSA Apartment directly to Skilled Nursing. In all cases, GSV social workers, nurses, CNAs, activity coordinators, maintenance department employees and administrators made the transitions quick and efficient, with care given to minimize the stress that such moves can cause. What fears did you have with transition for your parents? Susan: In both my Mom and Dad’s cases, my primary concern was that they receive the most competent, compassionate and personally tailored care possible. It became immediately clear that GSV would provide this care and I could lay these worries to rest. What was helpful along the way? Susan: Compassion and comprehensive understanding of my parents’ medical situations and personal needs and preferences, and provision of care that sometimes went above and beyond satisfying those needs and preferences, made a huge difference in ensuring that Mom and Dad’s final year and half was as comfortable as possible. This applies not only to care they did receive, but also to care they did not receive, since from the start it was important to them to have palliative care only, rather than artificially life-prolonging measures. The GSV team approach made all the difference: integrating social work, nursing, activities, faith, hospice, family involvement and everything else needed. It is critical that everyone including the family be informed and on the same page, and this was always the case. What would you say to residents and/or family members who are considering transitioning to a different level of care? Susan: Don’t wait! It’s not as scary or intimidating, or even as disruptive as you think. But it can take time and meanwhile, a resident in need of more care can suffer unnecessarily while waiting for a bed to become available. GSV is blessed with an outstanding social work staff, so get to know your social worker now and work closely with this person in order to determine what level of care is best at any given time. We thank Susan Clark for her thoughts and willingness to share the experiences of her parents transitioning through the Continuum of Care at Garden Spot Village. Perhaps you have questions or want to explore supportive levels of care here at Garden Spot Village. Please reach out to your social worker. We’re here to help at every step in the journey.

VOLUNTEER SERVICES Deborah Fast, Director of Volunteer Services CARING CONECTIONS ORIENTATION THURSDAY, MAY 16 9am–2:30pm, Concord Room Lunch is provided during the training.

LIVES OF SERVICE: BILL GEORGE

“You can see my signature just about everywhere,” Bill George says with a grin.

He’s right. His workmanship is everywhere. Over the past 20 years Bill has left a lasting mark on Garden Spot Village. Bookshelves in the library. Structures supporting the train displays as well buildings, bridges, farmhouses, corn cribs, the monorail station and more replicas within the display. Art in Refresh Café. Wood art in the restrooms in Village Square. Door frames and tables. The men he mentors as they learn to use the tools in the Wood Shop. “I just like to keep busy,” he says humbly. He’s grateful for the opportunity to serve and for the community where he thrives and finds purpose. He works in the Wood Shop 30 hours a week. He completes odd jobs, maintains the machines, repairs furniture, cedar chests and more. “There’s always something to do, always something to repair,” he says. His table, which is located just inside the Wood Shop doors, is often the place repair projects land. Residents and staff simply make a donation to the Wood Shop for the work that he completes on their behalf. Bill also makes furniture to sell at the Fall Festival each October and bird houses to sell during the Bird House Display and Silent Auction each February. About 10 years ago, while he was serving as the president of the Wood Shop, he realized the group needed a reason to build items beyond the Fall Festival. So, he challenged them to make bird houses. Now, each February, the display and silent auction inspire spring in the hearts of residents, staff and the local community. In 2019 the event raised $3,500 for the Benevolent Fund. In total, over the past 10 years the event has raised $45,000. He recently completed a replica of the Connell Mansion, as well as the mansion’s outbuildings and grounds for the Cocalico Valley Historical Society. When Larry Knepper presented the opportunity, Bill quickly agreed to help. He says, “I love making models. When they asked for us to make a replica, I was happy to donate my time.” The Cocalico Valley Historical Society showed their appreciation with a generous donation to the Wood Shop. Bill is thankful for the friend who introduced him to Garden Spot Village. At the time they learned about the community, he and his wife Marion were newly retired and at loose ends. A move to Garden Spot Village offered them opportunity, purpose and meaning.

Caring Connections, a volunteer visitation program at Garden Spot Village, is once again offering an orientation session. Participants will learn about the program, and find out how building a caring relationship with a fellow resident who might be struggling, can enrich your own life as well. Staff will lead sessions on Skilled Nursing, Personal Care and Memory Support – as well as spiritual aspects of reaching out to others in our community. Our own GSV Connectors will also share the blessings and insights of their experience. Please contact Deborah Fast (6204), Ruthann Ware (6851) or Marsha Dawson (6667) if you are interested, or if you have any questions.

SAVE THE DATE!

TUESDAY, MAY 7, 10am-4pm Appraisal Day Share & Care Shop •

All residents and staff are welcome to bring items for appraisal.

Participants may bring five items at once.

Appraisal charge is two items for $5.00 (minimum charge $5.00). All proceeds will be given to the GSV Benevolent Fund.

Appraisals are fair market value.

Participants will be given a number when they register at the door. They will be told approximately what time their number will be called.

You can also schedule a home visit at a later date for appraisal of large items.

Next to New will be prepared to purchase items if they are interested, and if a participant wishes to sell. Be sure to bring driver’s license or other photo ID if you are interested in selling your item(s).

Next to New will also be able to provide printed documentation for insurance purposes, etc. of your appraisal item for a $50 fee.

Please mark your calendars and plan to participate! Contact Deborah Fast in Volunteer Services (6204) with any questions: dfast@gardenspotvillage.org.

WELLNESS MAY IS ENVIRONMENTAL WELLNESS MONTH There are Eight Facets to the Framework of your wellness. They are Fitness, Faith, Finances, Footprint, Food, FamilyFriends, Feelings, and Focus. 9 Steps to Achieve Personal Environmental Wellness: We hear about environmental illness every day on the news. Some of these toxins seem so unavoidable, it can be overwhelming! Let’s focus on the things that you CAN do for yourself and your family in order to help minimize your exposure to toxins. The staff at NYC Medical Center got together to pitch in their favorite ideas on how to maintain environmental wellness. 1. Exercise: It’s a great way to help keep your body and mind strong, while improving your immune system and sweating out toxins. 2. Eat local and organic produce: Choose locally-grown, organic foods that support your body, the local economy and the environment. Berries are among food favorites for overall well-being. They are packed with anti-oxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties. Kale is another little food with big returns. 3. Focus on the good: Turn your attention to the positive things that are happening around you. Even if you’re in a bad mood, noticing the joyous laugh of a baby or the beauty of a flowering tree, or the smell of fresh cut grass can put you into a positive frame of mind. 4. Sleep well: Sleep’s role in overall wellness is greatly under rated. Especially in urban areas, this is a big health problem. Practice good sleep hygiene by turning off the TV or computer, dimming the lights and using relaxing music to create a peaceful environment. 5. Take a technology holiday: Just one day a week try turning off your cell phone, powering down your laptop and step outside to enjoy nature. It’s helpful for your body, mind and spirit to have a break from being bombarded by information every minute. You may even notice that your stress levels go down and it’s easier to be in the moment. 6. Reuse your bottle: Try a stainless steel water bottle. This helps prevent ingesting toxic chemicals from plastic bottles. It also decreases the amount of waste being sent to landfills. 7. Enjoy detox foods: Do your liver a favor by incorporating these foods into your daily meals to help your body detox every day; burdock root, dandelion greens, artichoke, turmeric, beets, and fennel. 8. Choose clean meat: If you choose to eat chicken, beef, pork or other types of animal protein, choose versions raised without the use of antibiotics, pesticides and hormones. This will help avoid contaminating your own body with these toxic substances and support farmers who are using conscious farming practices. 9. Clean green: Choose ‘green’ or homemade natural cleaning products. These are surprisingly easy and fun to make with many household products you may already have.
