TARBORO MISSION TRIP Items Needed for Volunteers Traveling With Purpose Approximately 15 residents and staff have signed up for the Garden Spot Village/Mount Gretna United Methodist Church mission trip to Tarboro, NC, scheduled for the end of March. The volunteers will be working on homes damaged by Hurricane Matthew in 2016. You can help this team by providing some snacks and other items that are needed. If you didn’t have the opportunity to sign up at the February Towne Meeting, there will be a table at The Harvest Table on March 4 & 6 from 11am-1:00pm in order to learn about the needs and sign up to provide an item, if you wish. Examples of items include paper towels, plastic bags, home baked cookies, fruit and other snacks. All donated items should be dropped off at the Administration Area on Wednesday, March 20 or Thursday, March 21. For additional information please contact Linda Dodge (6215) or Allison Cuthie (6153). Thank you for helping to make a difference in the lives of individuals whose homes were damaged by Hurricane Matthew.

GSV CLUB FOCUS

Colleen Musselman, Director of Life Enrichment

GSV BEE CLUB

written by Mandy Weaver, GSC Marketing Intern “Many people said they had excellent gardens last summer,” says Jim McAbee. “That’s probably because they saw bees in their garden. Plus, the Aeroponic greenhouse has had improved production; again, the bees help with that.” Jim has been part of the Bee Club since its start in late February 2016, and president for the last few years. The current president is Sandy Allen. “Sometimes people think bees are dangerous,” Jim continues. “Wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets are dangerous. Honey bees are harmless and won’t hurt you unless you disturb them.” When the club started, there were only 5 members. As people learned about how we need bees and, they need our help, the club has gained more members. Presently the Bee Club tends two hives, and if all goes well this summer, plans to add a third hive. What do beekeepers have to do to help their bees throughout the year? Bees typically only live seven weeks, so the queen must be healthy in order to lay thousands of eggs needed to keep producing workers. The Bee Club’s job is to make sure the queen is alive, producing eggs, and living conditions are good. Spring and summer is when the most work takes place. The Bee Club must make, clean, and fix up old boxes and supers that the bees have used during the winter months, and replace old hive frames in the spring. This is where the bees live, and if there are any holes or air circulation problems, the bees will die in the winter. The members check on the bees once every 2-3 weeks in the spring and summer, in order to continue maintenance since bees only work from spring to late fall. When fall comes, the club will collect honey if the bees have produced an abundant amount of excess. Normally one panel, a super, can produce 20 jars of honey. Each member will get a jar, which is one of the perks of being a member. The rest of the honey is sold at Refresh Gifts & Essentials as a limited fall treat. The members of the club only visit the hives once a month in the cold winter months due to how deadly the harsh cold can be to the bees. Bees huddle together around their queen, fluttering their wings to produce heat and keep warm. The members also set up polystyrene wind barriers to combat the cold. When members check the bees, they have to open the hive, which removes heat, so they try to do it as fast as possible. If you are interested in joining the GSV Bee Club or have any questions, contact Jim McAbee, 717.355.6760 or Sandy Allen, 717.940.7996. The annual membership is $25, which goes towards buying and repairing bee hive frames, as well as, food and additives needed to protect the hives from harmful intruders such as mites.

MARKETING

H O S P I TA L I T Y M A K E S A D I F F E R E N C E

Do you know our best, most effective, least cost form of marketing? Word of mouth. Second is the openness of our community and your welcoming hospitality. Take Refresh Coffee bar for instance. Of course the space was created for you, but it was also designed with a very specific, secondary purpose to be a welcoming space for the community. Like every Starbucks, it was intended for visitors to repeatedly come and gather while they enjoy a cup of coffee; it was intended for families to stop in with small children, business people to bring a laptop and work or have meetings. When Refresh is full, the energy is contagious! When visitors experience your welcoming spirit and hospitality, they want to live here! Who wouldn’t? Not only that, they tell others about their great experience. This is a remarkable community due to your extraordinary hospitality. It truly is an amazing place!

SOCIAL SERVICES

Sherilyn Lapp, Director of Social Services

COMMUNITY SUPPORT GROUPS These groups offer a free opportunity to learn from each other, find supportive understanding, be encouraged, and learn new educational information and life skills.

MARCH 6, WEDNESDAY Living with Loss Group Topic: Taking a Personal Inventory 10am, Board Room

We can easily lose track of what we’ve come through, the growth we’ve achieved, and the person we hope to become. This month we will take time to measure how we are feeling at this moment, and reflect upon what may yet feel unresolved. There is no expectation of where you should be in your grief. The Living with Loss group is for persons who have experienced the death of a spouse, family member, or close friend. Call Jenny Snyder (6259) for more information.

MARCH 11, MONDAY Caregiver’s Support Group Topic: Open Discussion 10am, Concord Room

The Alzheimer’s Association and Garden Spot Village co-sponsor this support group for family caregivers of persons with dementia. This month we will have an open discussion, while also taking time to summarize February’s topic, What to do When the Caregiver Is Sick. We will review since snow prevented some from attending that meeting. Bring your questions and advice so we can help each other in the journey. LIVES OF SERVICE: TOM & BERTHA HAWK

“I was ready to stop quilting when we moved to Garden Spot,” says Bertha Hawk. “Our home had enough quilts and wall hangings for decoration. But, when I joined the GSV Quilters, I realized that I could make quilts to benefit the Benevolent Fund. Suddenly I had new ideas for designs; it gave me a reason to keep quilting with my new-found friends.” Bertha was also reacquainted with painting through Win Reber’s watercolor art classes and lectures and she is active in the art guild. Her love of music led her to sing in the Village Voices. “The first thing I did when we moved to Garden Spot was join the train room and the woodshop,” says Tom Hawk. Tom and Bertha moved to Garden Spot Village from Havertown, Pa., in September 2011. Tom and Bertha’s connections with various clubs provide abundant opportunities to volunteer. Tom helps with Train Room Open Houses and golfs with the men. Bertha assists in coordinating the artists for the Main Street Art Gallery, helps to line up speakers for the Thursday Evening Speaker’s Series, takes water samples for the Water Quality Volunteer Corps and participates in exercise groups. Together they help with the 1/2 Marathon & 10K and donate handcrafted items to be sold at the Fall Festival and Bird House auction. Tom says, “When you get involved you make new friends, meet new people and discover talents you didn’t realize you had.” Bertha appreciates the cooperation between different clubs to accomplish common goals. For example, when the Train Club expanded the train layout a couple of years ago, Tom asked Bertha if she would sew a new skirt for the display. At the same time, the Wood Shop refinished a sewing machine table, but the sewing machine didn’t work. Wood Shop members brought it to the GSV Quilters to see if any of the ladies could fix the machine. Bertha fixed the machine and then used it to sew the skirt for the train display before passing it back to the Wood Shop, where it was eventually offered for sale. “Don’t view a new opportunity as a lifetime commitment,” advises Bertha. “Test it out; try it three times. If you still like it, keep going; if not, try something else.”
