DEVELOPMENT

Linda Dodge, CFRE, Director of Development

THINGS YOU MIGHT LIKE TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR TAX PREPARER The 2018 tax preparation may be different for many of us because of the new tax laws. If you have someone prepare your taxes, you may wish to talk with that individual about things you could do in 2019 that might improve your tax situation. Here are some ideas for discussion so you can find out if any of these could be helpful to you. 1. Making gifts to Garden Spot Village, your church and other non-profits using some of the required minimum distribution from your IRA. 2. Establishing a Donor Advised Fund with funds for several years of philanthropy placed in the fund in one year. Then the fund, at your direction, can make gifts over several years, but the tax benefit would just be the one year. (Some individuals might like to use appreciated stock for their Donor Advised Fund.) 3. Completing an application for a Charitable Gift Annuity. There are Garden Spot Village residents who did these things in 2018 and anticipate seeing a benefit when their 2018 taxes are completed. Please feel free to contact Linda Dodge (6215) if you would like to talk about these possibilities before you talk with your tax preparer.

SOARING INTO SPRING 11th Annual Bird House Display and Silent Auction

A chilly, rainy winter will soon give way to blooms and birdsongs. Greet spring with a tour of the annual Bird House Display and Silent Auction. This is the eleventh year for the event, which was started in 2009, by woodshop members to raise money for the Benevolent Fund. In several recent years, we have been blessed with beautifully handmade items from quilters and crafters and cross stitchers, with a bird theme. Plan now to visit the Village Square Indoor Park from February 1-28 to get your dose of bird beauty, combat that spring fever, and place bids on items that pique your interest. Scores of unique bird houses are on display, along with quilted and other handcrafted items. The silent auction bidding ends at 5pm on Thursday, February 28. Plan now to visit the Village Square Indoor Park before the end of the month. The unique items in the silent auction make nice, one-of-a-kind, gifts for the start of spring. To help us celebrate this special month of birding for the Benevolent Fund, Dr. Dean Rust, President of the Bluebird Society of Pennsylvania, will make a return visit to share his dynamic photos and knowledge of bluebirds and other types of birds native to Pennsylvania. Plan to visit Dr. Rust on February 15, 2pm in the Chapel. Thank you to the woodshop members, quilters, crafters, cross stitchers and other talented residents who have created and donated items to raise money for the Benevolent Fund.

WOODSHOP

written by Mandy Weaver, GSC Marketing Intern In 1996, the Garden Spot Village Woodshop was officially started, with only 10 members. Now 22 years later, the woodshop is thriving with a total of 82 members. It has expanded and more than doubled in size. And while other retirement communities have woodshops, none can compare in size or quality of equipment that is offered. For a $50 membership per year, the members have access to the woodshop all year long and are able to participate in the building requests that have been approved by the executive committee. Members can construct birdhouses, stools, bowls or fix items to assist maintenance. The woodshop members are the ones responsible for putting the wheels on the tables at the Harvest Table, constructing the wooden window pane and jewelry display at Refresh gift store, providing shelving for the books in the GSV library and many more projects and numerous repairs for residents and GSV staff. Some members are active outside the woodshop and volunteer to build new houses that have been destroyed by hurricanes and other natural disasters. A crew was sent after the destruction of Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy. One year they built the house frame on the Garden Spot campus, giving everyone a chance to help, and then sending the frame to Birmingham, Alabama to finish being built. “Most of our supplies are donated, which allows us to upgrade and do maintenance on our machines regularly, says Larry Knepper, the 2018 President chairman. He was the President chairman 5 years ago as well, since the board of chairmen changes yearly. And while the original woodshop started with the equipment of the original 10 members and grew with resident donations, they have been able to upgrade and expand, due to the donations cutting the supplies cost. Much of the wood is donated by Conestoga Wood, a kitchen cabinet manufacturer, as well as woodshop members. The woodshop members participate in Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day and Grands & Kids Camp, allowing parents and grandparents to bring kids to the woodshop in order to do a project. One year it was a stool, another year it was a puppy bank. The members help the kids and the accompanying adult with the basics doing this fun, safe project. In February, the woodshop sells birdhouses for the Benevolent Fund, with the proceeds averaging $3,000 each year. On average, they donate 40 bird houses per year. Members from the woodshop also donate items they have created for the Fall Festival, which also helps build the Benevolent Fund. In June, the woodshop participates in the GSV Yard Sale, selling supplies, tools, etc., which benefits the Woodshop.

SOCIAL SERVICES CORNER

Sherilyn Lapp, Director of Social Services

LIFE IN THE COOPERATIVE LIVING HOUSE It will soon be a year since the first resident moved into the Cooperative Living House on Ranck Road. The Social Services team thought you might enjoy hearing an update on how things are going and answers to common questions. HOW IS SHARING A KITCHEN WORKING OUT? The current group sharing the home has decided that each person will shop for and prepare personal meals. Shelves in cabinets, refrigerator and freezer are labeled with specific resident names; creating private storage spaces, therefore saving the need to label each item. Occasionally, a household meal is planned and made together. The picture above is from a shared Thanksgiving meal. I’VE HEARD RUMORS OF A NAME CHANGE. IS THIS TRUE? Yes! The official name is now Thistledown Co-Living. WHY THISTLEDOWN? The idea for Thistledown started as a desire to use a wildflower in the name. The initial response was that Thistles are notorious for their “prickles” on the leaves & stems. However, after researching the plant, the Co-Living residents discovered that Scotland’s national flower is the thistle and there is a great legend of that little defender plant. Even today, throughout Celtic regions the thistle represents bravery, devotion, durability, strength and determination. THERE ARE ONLY TWO SPACES FOR VEHICLES IN THE GARAGE. HOW IS THAT WORKING OUT WITH FIVE RESIDENTS LIVING IN THE HOME? Four of the five residents have cars. As a group, they decided to rotate inside/outside parking privileges on a monthly basis. WHAT NAME HAVE THE RESIDENTS GIVEN THEMSELVES? The Golden Pioneers ARE THERE BOTH MEN AND WOMEN LIVING AT THISTLEDOWN? Currently five women share the home. HOW IS THE HOME SET UP? Each resident has a private bedroom and bathroom. Common areas include a beautiful living room, upstairs loft, kitchen/dining area, den, guest bathroom, laundry room and garage. LIVES OF SERVICE: DON & LUCILLE SUTTON

“When we learned about Caring Connections,” Lucille says, “We asked, Lord, is that why you want us at Garden Spot?” Don and Lucille Sutton, who moved to Garden Spot Village in November 2017, love connecting with people. Caring Connections offers a perfect fit for the couple. Their different gifts complement each other as they visit the people with whom they connect. Don loves hearing people’s stories and Lucille brings a natural spirit of compassion. After Don retired as a prison guard, he served as a bus driver for 18 years, transporting people who were in personal care and memory support at Attleboro Community in Langhorne. He fondly remembers his time there saying, “People are fascinating. Everyone has a story. One of the gentlemen I met was Eisenhower’s aid, another sketched the actors and personalities who appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show and one woman took a QE2 trip around the world every year.” Lucille, a geriatric nurse, says, “I have always been drawn to people with dementia. And I don’t believe anyone should die alone.” During her career Lucille served in a variety of nursing roles, most recently as a home care supervisor, helping certified nursing assistants provide quality care. She always wanted to volunteer in a way that would allow her to use her nursing experience and natural compassion. After going through Caring Connections training, Lucille and Don were assigned a couple, who lived in Laurel View. They visit regularly, simply taking time to hear the couple’s story. While the conversation may be similar every week, they learned that it’s important to listen and stay focused on what the connectee wants to talk about. Don says, “All you really need is to be a good listener, be willing to pick up on what is interesting to the person you are visiting and run with it.” “A lot of people feel inadequate to serve as caring connectors,” says Lucille. “We feel inadequate. So we always take time to pray before we visit; we need to rely on God.” Plus, she adds, Garden Spot Village offers so many resources to help volunteers. She says, “If you have a heart for being there for other people, the tools are available and you will continue to learn all the time. You get much, much more than you ever give. It’s so rewarding.” In addition to Caring Connections, they also volunteer with Release Time at Petra Church and CrossNet Ministries.

SPARKING GRATITUDE

At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us. —Albert Schweitzer We, in Volunteer Services, feel rekindled by sparks of gratitude on a daily basis. We’re continually grateful for the many volunteers who faithfully serve others at Garden Spot Village, week after week. In so many ways, often behind the scenes, these volunteers share their “sparks,” touching others’ lives and making them just a bit brighter. We’re grateful for people who are willing to move out of their comfort zones, and who selflessly give of their time to enrich this community, and everyone who lives and works here. We also hear words of gratitude from our volunteers: for the strength and ability to serve others and the good health to allow it; for the opportunity to be part of a community like this – and most importantly for the friendships that are formed in the process. Volunteers will often tell us that they receive more than they give, and that it just feels good, and right, to help others. We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude. —Cynthia Ozick As we start a new year, we ask everyone to join us in thanking our volunteers. Because of them, your mail is faithfully delivered six days a week. Towels at the pool are neatly folded and stacked, ready for use. The Refresh store is regularly stocked with groceries and provides welcoming customer service. The Share & Care offers constantly changing and beautifully displayed merchandise, with a volunteer waiting to serve you. If you or a loved one need nursing care, volunteers are available to take you to physical therapy or to recreational activities, or to visit for a while. If you need help with carrying your tray in the Harvest Table, a volunteer is there for you. Feeling a bit tired, or not strong enough to walk to the other end of the building? A Jolly Trolley driver will pick you up and take you there. Need groceries? Volunteer drivers provide shuttle service three times a week to local stores. The list could go on! We encourage everyone to make gratitude part of your daily practice, and not to take for granted the services of others. And of course, we always welcome new volunteers! Share your gratitude by reaching out and sharing your spark. Contact Volunteer Services (6283), volunteerservices@gardenspotvillage.org or stop by our office!

WELLNESS

FEBRUARY IS FITNESS MONTH IN THE WELLNESS DEPARTMENT There are Eight Facets to the Framework of your wellness. They are Fitness, Faith, Finances, Footprint, Food, FamilyFriends, Feelings and Focus. February is also Heart Health Month and one of the best ways to take care of your heart is to exercise. With only 10 minutes at day of simple exercises can make a difference. Since February is National Heart Health Month, it only seems appropriate to start our wellness foundation with Fitness (also my favorite topic). The definition of Fitness is: a state of general mental and physical well-being. It’s taking responsibility for your body and know what you need to do in order to maintain a healthy quality of life. Ask yourself these Fitness questions: Do I exercise regularly?

(aerobic exercise 3x/week or strength train 2x/week or stretch daily)

Do I get annual physical checkups? Do I avoid the use of tobacco, illegal drugs or alcohol in excess? Am I generally free from illness? Am I at a reasonable weight for my age and height? Do I know my numbers? (blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose etc.) I’m not saying you have to start coming to the gym twice a week, or take several of our wellness programs (though I would be happy if everyone would).
