THANK YOU FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF OTHERS

Residents at Garden Spot Village bless others because of their passion to make a difference in the lives of others. As we begin 2019, I want to express my sincere thanks to you for the gifts you have given to Garden Spot Village in 2018 for the Benevolent Fund, the Cooperative Living House and other projects. It is a joy that we continue to see the Legacy Society grow, as an increasing number of residents bless Garden Spot Village and its residents by including Garden Spot Village in estate plans through wills, charitable gift annuities, etc. Your volunteer time for activities such as Fall Festival, Golf Tournament, Bird House Silent Auction, Community Business Expo and the Angel Tree, help to raise funds for the Benevolent Fund. These events would not be possible without your volunteer time. Please know that I greatly appreciate how God touches your hearts so that you are moved to make donations and to volunteer to make a difference in the lives of others. Wishing you a new year filled with happiness, love and good health. God Bless You.

CULTURE CLASS WITH ERIC LIN, IVEP JANUARY 22, FEBRUARY 26, MARCH 26, APRIL 23, MAY 28 & JUNE 25, TUESDAYS 10AM, THEATER

Eric Lin is currently serving at Garden Spot Village through Mennonite Central Committee’s (MCC) International Volunteer Exchange Program (IVEP). From Wenzhou, China, Eric recently graduated from Fuzhou University with a degree in psychology. He learned about MCC’s IVEP program through his church and was very interested in learning about the language and culture in the United States, so he applied. His parents were very supportive of this opportunity for him. He wants to become a chaplain so, his work at Garden Spot Village has been “wonderful.” He splits his time between Pastoral Services, Mountain View and Life Enrichment. He appreciates the interaction with residents, saying, “I have learned a lot.” He looks forward to sharing Chinese culture through his monthly culture classes. Topics will include traffic, surroundings, Christianity and food.

GSV CLUB FOCUS

Colleen Musselman, Director of Life Enrichment

TRAVELING RED CHAPEAUX written by Mandy Weaver, GSC Marketing Intern

Red Hatters Matter is the motto of the Red Hat Society. The Red Hat Society Social Organization began in 1989. It is the only social group of its kind created specifically for women over 50 and encourages them to still be high-spirited and lighthearted, even in their advancing years. And although our GSV Traveling Red Chapeaux are no longer associated with the official Red Hat Society, they are similar and enjoy fun outings and socializing with one another. Originally, there were three different groups that planned their own trips. Ruth Young started the GSV Traveling Red Chapeaux group in 2003. She was very adventurous, active and outgoing, and wanted to find a group of women who were similar in personality. The other groups included The Red Revelers and The Red Dreamers. One group disbanded while the other group joined Red Chapeaux. Ruth organized trips and lunches every month for the women to gather and socialize. Members are from GSV, and occasionally invite daughters and friends. When Ruth’s health declined, she asked others for help in order to keep the Red Chapeaux functioning. Elfriede Williams was one of the women she asked. Elfriede had been a part of the Red Chapeaux since the day she moved to GSV. “We have many women of a wide range, which allows for a diverse range of topics to talk about,” said Elfriede. Unlike other organizations at GSV, the Traveling Red Chapeaux is strictly a social group. And yes, they do wear their snazzy red hats and chic purple attire when they go out. The group members team up in pairs and take turns picking and organizing where the group will eat lunch and visit. The group has recently enjoyed a High Tea in Reading. Other interesting places include the Harrisburg Capitol, James Buchanan House and the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Center. Each January, the Red Hatters host an annual luncheon/dinner for members. After the meal, the group will either watch a movie or have a special speaker. It’s a way of starting off the year with a light-hearted, fun event. The Traveling Red Chapeaux is always excited to have new members join their social club.

JANUARY 10, THURSDAY **Red Chapeaux Luncheon & Movie 12noon, Village Park (Sign up began December 5)

Ladies laughing and chatting while dressed in a sea of red and purple. Yes, the Red Chapeaux ladies invite you, past and present Red Hatters, to join the fun. Don the proper colors and enjoy conversation, a light lunch and a movie. Cost: $15pp includes lunch and movie. Sign up at Resident Services.

The Living with Loss group is for persons who have experienced the death of a spouse, family member, or close friend. Those walking through grief often feel their identities and purposes change following the death of a loved one. This can feel like an insurmountable task to figure out. While there are no easy answers to questions such as Who am I? or What am I going to do? it can be helpful to discuss these new realities with others who truly understand. Call Jenny Snyder (6259) for more information.

JANUARY 10, THURSDAY Essential Tremor Support Group Topic: Caring and Coping — Open Discussion 10am, Board Room

Individuals with Essential Tremors and their families and friends are invited to join us! We will be sharing challenges and victories; asking questions; and giving each other support and suggestions. MEDICARE ADVANTAGE OPEN ENROLLMENT PERIOD

Happy New Year

BEST VERSION QUESTS Christmas shopping, with its search for best version gifts, has faded in the rearview mirror. Being a challenged gift giver, I’m not at all sorry about that! Armed with a list, I was hopeful this year would be easy. But then came those dreadful moments while browsing online or staring at a store display when it suddenly wasn’t at ALL apparent which Eagles shirt/helmet combo was right for the 5 year old grandson or which eyeshadow pallet the 21 year old was thinking of. (Earth tones? There were at least 12 options!) Another best version quest is now on the horizon. One that, for some, involves making New Year’s Resolutions. What needs to be adjusted for the BEST ME to stand up in 2019? Whether or not you find resolutions helpful, we all benefit from times of honest self-evaluation and reflection. Since character issues are at the core of who we are and what we do, my plan is to use the fruits of the Spirit list found in scripture as a yardstick for the past year and a guide for areas of improvement needed in the next year. The best version of ourselves will be found by leaning into these life-giving words. LOVE, JOY, PEACE, PATIENCE, KINDNESS, GOODNESS, FAITHFULNESS, GENTLENESS, and SELF-CONTROL

The following information was provided by the Center for Medicare. 1.

The Medicare Dis-enrollment Period which ran from January 1 through February 14, is ending. It is being replaced by the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period which will run January 1 through March 31. To change Medicare Advantage plans during this period, you must have been in an Advantage plan on January 1, and you can use this period one time only.

2. During the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period, a person already in an Advantage plan can: • Switch Medicare Advantage plans • Leave a Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare. They can also pick up a part D plan • Can add or drop Part D when switching plans • Beneficiaries cannot switch from one standalone drug plan to another drug plan Additional thought from our Social Service team for those of you with a Medicare Advantage Plan: always be aware of the need to check in-network/out-ofnetwork status for all providers and facilities from whom you may need care before selecting a plan. Please see a social worker if you would like more information on what this means.

I wish you all the best in your quest for growth in 2019!

VOLUNTEER SERVICES

Deborah Fast, Director of Volunteer Services

LIVES OF SERVICE: ED SMITH

“Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” –Fred Rogers After retiring from Shell Oil Co., Ed and Darlene Smith had a bit of extra time on their hands. They had settled in Gap after living in various locations across the country, simply because they loved the area and it was close to Ed’s parents in New Jersey. They attended church in New Holland. When a visiting speaker from Garden Spot Village invited their congregation to consider serving as volunteers in the community, Ed and Darlene accepted the invitation and began volunteering regularly in December 2012. Ed started by volunteering with therapeutic recreation in Skilled Nursing. He says, “When we started volunteering, we had no intention of leaving Gap. We simply wanted to be obedient to what God wanted us to do. As we learned more about Garden Spot Village, we realized the community had everything we needed. We thought we might eventually want to move here.” After attending a Look & Learn, they met with Megan and decided that a carriage house with a two car garage and a loft would be a great option for them. Eventually came faster than they had anticipated and Ed and Darlene moved into their carriage home in August 2014. Over the past six years Ed has served a variety of volunteer roles. Together, he and Darlene ran Water Station #8 during the Marathon for the past four years. He has filled community birdfeeders with bird food and called Bingo in Mountain View. He also volunteers with physical therapy, transporting residents to and from their appointments. Ed says, “I enjoy playing the games – beachball volleyball and others – it’s fun!”

16

Ed drives the trolley on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons and serves as a new driver trainer. He enjoys driving the trolly, “Because I get to drive something!” Plus, he loves to help people. “So often people say, ‘Thank goodness you are here.’ Or, ‘I was hoping I would meet you.’ It’s rewarding to help them.” Additionally, Ed serves on a team of residents who help to stock Refresh Gifts & Essentials with the “essentials.” He purchases health and beauty items for the store as well as light bulbs, soap, candy and bulk items. He also shops on Monday and Wednesday mornings for bananas and checks expiration dates on the milk and other perishable items regularly. Deborah Fast, director of Volunteer Services, says, “Ed’s amazingly meticulous and dedicated, and has been a huge help with keeping the health and beauty aids stocked and also tracking expirations on all of the grocery items.” Ed and Darlene also collect Styrofoam from four receptacles around campus approximately every other week. After collecting the Styrofoam, they take it to Dart Container’s foam recycling center in Leola, where it is recycled into new products. Ed encourages others to volunteer saying, “First of all, it’s fun and rewarding. Second, as we were told, Jesus came to serve, not to be served, so we have an obligation to serve.” And third, he says with a grin, “the pay is great!” He adds, “If you’re feeling down and out, or bored, volunteer and help someone do something. I think you’ll find that you feel better afterwards.”

GARDEN SPOT V I LLAG E

Speakers Series 7pm | 1st Thursday | Garden Towers

JANUARY 3, THURSDAY

Speaker: Val Dunham, GSV resident | Topic: The Apple Jack Raid Book: Allegany to Appomattox: The Life and Letters of Private William Whitlock of the 188th New York Volunteers Author: Valgene Dunham, Syracuse University Press, 2013, Foreword by Bill Potter On September 7, 1864, William Whitlock, age 35, left his wife and four children in Allegany, New York, to join the Union army in battle. More than one hundred years later, the letters he wrote to his wife were found in the attic of a family home. These letters serve as the foundation for Allegany to Appomattox, giving readers a vivid glimpse into the environment and political atmosphere that surrounded the Civil War, from the perspective of a Northern farmer and lumberman. Whitlock’s observations tell of exhausting marches, limited rations, and grueling combat. In plainspoken language, the letters also reveal a desperate homesickness, persistent expressions of concern for the family’s health and financial situation, and requests for news from home. Dunham’s detailed descriptions of the war’s progress and specific battles provide a rich context for Whitlock’s letters, orienting readers to both the broad narrative of the Civil War and the intimate chronicle of one soldier’s impressions.
