MARKETING

Scott Miller, Chief Marketing Officer

L A N C A S T E R I S A G R E AT P L AC E T O R E T I R E Kiplinger recently evaluated small to mid-size cities across the country and named Lancaster as one of the “10 Great Places to Retire for Your Health.” Kiplinger, a magazine that provides advice on investing and retirement, evaluated things like access to quality health care, the size of the city, affordable housing and more. In addition, US News & World Report named Lancaster the “2nd Best Place to Retire” in the United States earlier this year. US News & World Report’s evaluation included access to affordable housing, low retiree taxes, health of the job market, access to health care and overall level of happiness. We love living in Lancaster County so, we’re not surprised by this national recognition! Most importantly, new residents, who have moved to Garden Spot Village from outside of Lancaster County, consistently tell us that the slower pace of life and the friendly, welcoming spirit of the people, make Garden Spot Village and Lancaster County the best place they’ve ever lived.

SOCIAL SERVICES NOTES VOLUNTARY MORNING CHECK-IN PROGRAM

SOCIAL SERVICE TEAM UPDATES Hello! My name is Emelia Reifsnyder, and I am the social worker in Mountain View and Laurel View. I previously worked at the Ephrata Hospital; my first day at Garden Spot was June 26th. I was born and raised in Reamstown PA and currently live in Ephrata and attend church here in New Holland. I enjoy gardening, being outdoors (hiking, kayaking, camping…), and I am slowly learning to sew. I love coffee and enjoy trying different roasts and learning new brewing methods to get the perfect cup. I’m excited to be here at Gardens Spot and feel blessed to have the opportunity to get to know the staff and residents who live and work here! Emelia earned her Masters of Social Work from the University of Michigan and Bachelors in both Social Work and Bible from Cairn University. If you’re in Mountain View, stop by her office (across from the Team room) and say Hello.

Garden Spot Village offers an optional check-in program for residents in order to provide peace of mind for residents, families, and friends. If you chose to enroll in this program, you will need to touch the “check-in” box on your CATIE each morning between 5am and 10am. If you are unable to do so, a social worker or manager will contact you after 10:30am in order to ensure that you are ok. This service is available 7 days a week except on holidays. Contact your social worker to sign up.

NOTIFICATION OF HOSPITAL STAYS Please notify your social worker of any planned or unplanned (unexpected) hospitalizations. By keeping the social services team informed, we are better able to assist with discharge plans and coordinate with the hospital in order to provide you with the care you need.

Tuesday, August 14, 7pm The Chapel at Garden Spot Village

WELLNESS

Lauren Graber, Director of Wellness

AUGUST IS FRIENDS & FAMILY MONTH OR YOUR SOCIAL WELLNESS There are eight facets in your Foundation for Wellness. They are Fitness, Faith, Finances, Footprint, Food, FamilyFriends-Fun and Focus. Social Wellness is necessary for your well-being and longevity, and an integral part of any wellness program. However, if you are shy or introverted, being “social” may not always come easily. Remember, you don’t need to make drastic changes. You simply need to make progress...Start today by deciding one simple thing that you could do in order to improve your social health, whether it’s to make lunch plans with a friend, schedule a play date with your best friend, or join a new club - and then just do it! Being aware of potential social issues is the first step toward improving Social Wellness. Here are a few more quick tips to help improve your social health: 1. Recognize the need for recreation 2. Spend time with friends and family 3. Pursue activities and people who nurture your needs 4. Join a club or organization that interests you 5. Participate in a community volunteer program 6. VOLUNTEER SERVICES

Deborah Fast, Director of Volunteer Services

LIVES OF SERVICE

This year Volunteer Services is focusing on service, and the many ways it enriches our own and others’ lives. This profile of Faye Raub is the fifth in a series featuring the service of our inspiring Garden Spot Village volunteers. As a school teacher, Faye Raub relied on volunteers in her classroom. She taught in in Bucks and then Montgomery Counties as a newlywed. She and her husband Bob relocated to a farm in Millerstown in Perry County in 1981 with their two daughters and two sons. After taking time off to raise her children, she returned to teaching. She taught 3rd and 4th grade in the rural Greenwood School District for 20 years. In addition to teaching in the local public school, Faye volunteered with Christian Education and Vacation Bible School at her church. She also served as a pianist and organist.

“As a teacher I benefited from the service of many volunteers over the years, and now I want to give back to others.”

—Faye Raub

Faye and Bob lived in Perry County until 2004 when they moved back to Montgomery County to be closer to their parents as well as their daughter. In March 2018 Faye and Bob moved to Sycamore Springs. Faye appreciates the opportunities she has had to connect with the broader Garden Spot Village community through the Community Church, the Handbell Choir and Village Voices. Shortly after moving to Sycamore Springs she attended Volunteer Orientation, because, as she said during orientation, “As a teacher, I benefited from the service of many volunteers over the years, and now I want to give back to others.”

Her first opportunity to give back was to New Holland Elementary. As a teacher, she recognized the benefits of writing letters and connecting with someone who has a different life experience. So, signing up to serve as a pen pal was a perfect fit! Through the 2017/2018 school year she wrote faithfully to a 5th grade girl at New Holland Elementary and enjoyed meeting her at a special event at the end of the school year. She says, “I enjoy kids. It was fun to write to her.” Faye looks forward to making additional connections with the community and find new opportunities to live and serve with purpose.

THANK YOU AND FAREWELL

Since I will soon be joining the ranks of being a retired senior citizen just like you, starting August 31, I am grateful for the encouragement and kindness that you have expressed to me during the twenty-one years of my employment at GSV. My life has been enriched by many relationships that have been a blessing to me. Thank you for allowing me the privilege of serving you as an expression of Christ’s love. My prayer for you is that you will grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ as you put your faith in Him. This may not be the “final good-bye” to Garden Spot Village because leaving as an employee allows me to return as a resident. So, some day our paths may cross once again, across the street or down the corridor, as neighbors! Time will tell but until then, may the Lord bless you and keep you in His care.
