MARKETING

Scott Miller, Chief Marketing Officer

THANK YOU FOR MAKING ALL THE DIFFERENCE Thank you for your generous hospitality and the open and authentic sharing of your stories and your homes with future residents and people who are exploring Garden Spot Village. Recently, future residents shared that they were planning to move to another retirement community when someone casually asked if they visited Garden Spot Village. Intrigued, simply because they love this part of Lancaster County, they met with Kelly and toured two homes. Their interaction with residents on that first visit compelled them to return and wander the grounds informally. On two separate occasions, during those informal visits, residents invited them into their homes. Participating in the Look & Learn sealed the deal. At lunch and during the campus tour, the couple was convinced that Garden Spot Village was the right choice. Thank you. Thank you for being authentic. Thank you for sharing your stories. Thank you for making all the difference.

Two homes are still available for immediate occupancy. If you have friends or family members who are looking for an opportunity to move quickly, invite them to contact Kelly (6201) or Megan (6290) for more information.

JULY 25, WEDNESDAY Special Event – Documentary; Mimi and Dona 10:30am, Theater

What happens when love runs out of time? For 92-year-old Mimi, who has spent much of her life caring for 64-year-old Dona, her daughter with an intellectual disability, it means facing the inevitable — the likelihood that she will not outlive her daughter and the need to find her a new home. Filmmaker Sophie Sartain, Mimi and Dona’s granddaughter and niece, respectively, capture the quirky and deeply connected mother-daughter duo at their most poignant crossroads. In part worried for her safety, as well as dealing with the reality of aging, Mimi’s family has made the agonizing decision that she can no longer care for Dona, and Dona must leave home to live in a state-run facility in nearby Denton, Texas. After 64 years, Mimi will have an empty nest and Dona will suddenly be away from home. (Taken from PBS.org, written by Sophie Sartain) This documentary may be of particular interest to those who have attended the Persons with Special Cares group, but is open to anyone who has interest. A short discussion will follow the film. Contact Jenny Snyder (6259) with questions or for more details.

SOCIAL SERVICES NOTES THOUGHTS ON DEALING WITH LIFE’S FRUSTRATIONS written by Sherilyn Lapp, Director of Social Services

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day We’ve all had them; that day when everything went wrong. The children’s book, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst may have become a classic because we can all relate to the unhappy little boy in the story. He wakes up to gum stuck in his hair, no toy in HIS cereal box, getting smushed in the middle of the back car seat, his teacher liking other students’ pictures better than his, a friend relegating him from BEST friend to third best friend, making Dad mad by messing up his office, yucky food for supper, just to name a few of the childhood misfortunes he faces in the course of one bad day. Worse yet, no one seems to listen as he voices his misery. He dreams of moving to Australia. The story ends with Mom saying some days are like that. Even in Australia. When my children were young, I’d read them this book not to teach them to complain, but to help them learn that frustrations are a normal part of life. Even in Australia. Even in Morgantown. It also gave me an opportunity to ask them about their everyday struggles. Seeing life through a child’s eyes is like putting on a whole different pair of glasses. They aren’t as practiced and skilled as adults at hiding their disappointments or reacting as expected. One memorable day, I had my eight-year-old and ten-year-old sons (now 24 and 26, one a HS English teacher, the other a Financial Advisor) write and illustrate their own stories. ”Josh and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” included having to eat tomato soup for supper “and I hate tomato soup!” “Jonathan and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” has a page about needing to clean out the bunny cage and another page that states “and mom made peas AGAIN for supper!” If you would write your own story of a recent day that didn’t go well, what would show up on those pages? A missed appointment with a specialist? The drycleaner ruining your favorite shirt? The car breaking down? The washing machine leaking on the carpet? What helps you deal with normal frustrations in life? My list contains coping skills of taking a walk with my dogs, working OUTSIDE (preferably in the dirt wearing very old clothes), writing a favorite verse on a 3x5 card and carrying it in my pocket, calling or texting a good friend, listening to worship music and creating an entree without using a recipe. I’ll leave you with my current mediation verse: 2 Cor 9:8 “And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”

JULY IS FEELINGS MONTH OR EMOTIONAL WELLNESS MONTH There are eight Facets to the Framework of your wellness. They are Fitness, Faith, Finances, Footprint, Food, FamilyFriends-Fun, Feelings and Focus. Pick up your copy of the Feelings Calendar at the Wellness Lobby or the Apartment Suites Lobby. Emotional Wellness is our core. It is the heart of Wellness. Emotional Wellness encompasses all of our feelings which might include generalized anxiety, panic attacks, depression or mood swings (if we are upset), contentment, ease, confidence and hopefulness (if we are happy). Whatever we feel has a direct impact on how we perceive challenges and stress in our lives. Emotional Wellness involves learning how to handle stress and understanding when our emotions are off kilter. It doesn’t mean that we will never have negative feelings. It is important to connect with our feelings and be able to name them, understand them, and know how to handle them. Look at this list of quick and easy ways to support your Feelings: •

Journaling is essential. Regularly sitting down and writing about what is going on in our lives allows us to get out emotions we might otherwise ignore.

Practicing an attitude of gratitude works. One of the best ways to cope with negative emotions is to make a gratitude list.

Learn how to handle stress. It makes a major difference. The key is to create balance in our lives so that stress doesn’t get the better of us. We need to draw boundary lines around the amount of time we spend at work, take time out to play, get enough sleep and engage in enjoyable activities that nourish our spirits and allow us to have fun.

Impoved self-esteem increases our Emotional Wellness. Engaging in regular self-care lets us know that we deserve to be treated well. Self-esteem is a huge issue for many of us, but simple steps can gradually improve our self-love and self-respect.

Eating well supports Emotional Wellness. A well-balanced diet doesn’t just increase our Physical Wellness. It can also have a significant effect on our Emotional Wellness.

LIVES OF SERVICE

This year Volunteer Services is focusing on service, and the many ways it enriches our own and others’ lives. This profile of Larry Knepper is the fourth in a series featuring the service of our inspiring Garden Spot Village volunteers.

“Whenever I can do something that helps others, I try to do it.”

—Larry Knepper

Larry Knepper grew up on a farm in Fulton County, Pennsylvania, learning to work with his hands. His father taught him to be patient and persistent, despite the challenges life throws at you. These life skills influence the servant-leader and volunteer he is today.

Larry casually recounts a list of activities he recently helped with at Garden Spot Village. Included in the list is repairing and building wood items for facility services, running the sound booth in the Chapel for special events, planning Vacation Bible School, serving on church council and as a worship leader at the Community Church at Garden Spot Village, driving the shuttle bus to Yoder’s, working in Refresh Gifts & Essentials, building a table for the auction at the Fall Festival and on and on. Over the past year Larry also provided critical leadership to the building of the Cooperative Living House on Ranck Road. He served on the steering committee, recruited and coordinated building volunteers and spent many, many hours himself working to help build the home. He says, “I like to stay busy. One of the reasons I do all these different things is to keep some variety in my life. If I spent all of my time in the woodshop, I might burn out. So, I try to do different things.” Larry’s commitment to serving isn’t new. He graduated from Penn State Altoona and started to work for Sperry Corporation in 1957. He and his wife, Pat, settled in New Holland and he joined the New Holland Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) as a young professional. This community involvement early in his career led to a life of community service. Over the years Larry served on a variety of committees and in a variety of leadership roles at New Holland United Methodist Church where he and Pat were members. He is also a lifetime volunteer with Garden Spot Fire Rescue and Garden Spot Fire Police. Over the years he has served on boards for the New Holland Community Memorial Park, the ELANCO Community Library and the New Holland Historical Society. Every other month Larry heads to the CrossNet Food Pantry to help sort food. Larry thrives on staying involved in his community and finds purpose and energy in working and serving others. Even before he and Pat moved to Garden Spot Village in August 2009, he served as a volunteer. He says, “Whenever I can do something that helps others, I try to do it.” To recharge, Larry and Pat head to their cabin in Fulton County where they rest, read, play farmer, watch wildlife and enjoy the hummingbirds.
