SOCIAL SERVICES NOTES

THE NEW MEDICARE CARDS HAVE BEEN ARRIVING AT GSV! Please bring your card or a good copy of your card to Social Services. It is very important we have your new Medicare number. Thank you to everyone who has already provided this information.

10 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR NEW MEDICARE CARD Medicare is mailing new Medicare cards starting in April 2018. Here are 10 things to know about your new Medicare card:

1. MAILING TAKES TIME:

Your card may arrive at a different time than your friend’s or neighbor’s.

2. DESTROY YOUR OLD MEDICARE CARD:

Once you get your new Medicare card, destroy your old Medicare card and start using your new card right away.

3. GUARD YOUR CARD:

Only give your new Medicare Number to doctors, pharmacists, other health care providers, your insurers, or people you trust to work with Medicare on your behalf.

4. YOUR MEDICARE NUMBER IS UNIQUE:

Your card has a new number instead of your Social Security Number. This new number is unique to you.

5. YOUR NEW CARD IS PAPER:

Paper cards are easier for many providers to use and copy, and they save taxpayers a lot of money. Plus, you can print your own replacement card if you need one!

6. KEEP YOUR NEW CARD WITH YOU:

Carry your new card and show it to your health care providers when you need care.

7. YOUR DOCTOR KNOWS IT’S COMING:

Doctors, other health care facilities and providers will ask for your new Medicare card when you need care.

8. YOU CAN FIND YOUR NUMBER:

If you forget your new card, you, your doctor or other health care provider may be able to look up your Medicare Number online.

9. KEEP YOUR MEDICARE ADVANTAGE CARD:

If you’re in a Medicare Advantage Plan (like an HMO or PPO), your Medicare Advantage Plan ID card is your main card for Medicare – you should still keep and use it whenever you need care. However, you also may be asked to show your new Medicare card, so you should carry this card too.

THE WELLNESS WHEEL HIGHLIGHT FOR JUNE IS FOOD

JUNE’s wellness feature is Food or your Nutritional Wellness. There are eight Facets to the Framework of your wellness. They are Fitness, Faith, Finances, Footprint, Food, Family & Friends, Feelings and Focus. Pick up your copy of the Food Calendar at the Wellness Lobby or the Apartment Suites Lobby. Nutrition Month is finally here! While many of us may have adjusted our diets at the start of the New Year, after a few months, the determination to stay on track with nutrition begins to fade. Rather than allowing for old habits to creep back in, try to focus your nutrition on the health benefits you will receive from eating well instead of placing all of the focus on aesthetic goals. By focusing on your long term health, you will be more likely to stick to your healthy habits. Below you will find simple nutrition tips that will help you get back on track and choose healthy options.

5 EASY NUTRITION TIPS FOR HEALTHY LIVING 1. FILL UP ON VEGETABLES Vegetables are a low calorie/ high volume food. This means you can eat a lot of vegetables without consuming a lot of unwanted calories and you will feel full because they take up a lot of room in your stomach. When eating vegetables, avoid adding sauces and oil, which will add more total calories to your meal. Aim for fresh or steamed vegetables when possible.

4. UP THE PROTEIN If you feel like you are constantly hungry, try adding a bit more protein to your meals. When ordering a dinner salad, order a serving of lean protein to be placed on top in order to help you fill up and stay full. Also try eating the protein portion of your meals before having the side items which are usually higher in carbohydrates and fat.

2. TAKE IT EASY ON THE FRUIT While fruit is a great source of fiber and natural sugar, some people tend to go overboard and eat too much. In turn, this keeps sugar and carbohydrate intake sky high. Rather than ditching fruit all together, try pairing one piece of fruit with almond butter, nuts or a source of lean protein.

5. DRINK MORE WATER Water aids your body in digestion and keeps your skin looking youthful and hydrated. On days where you are training or outdoors for a period of time, be sure to consume extra water. Drinking 12 ounces of water before your meal will also fill up your stomach and may prevent you from overeating.

3. BE WARY OF NUTRITION/PROTEIN BARS While the marketing on most of these products claims these bars are the healthy alternative, most bars are high in fat, carbohydrates and artificial preservatives. Some health bars also pack a similar nutritional punch as a traditional candy bar. Do not allow yourself to be fooled! Read the label and check out what is really going into these products before you snack on them daily.

Try incorporating a few of these nutrition tips into your daily routine. Small changes can add up to great health benefits on the long run. Take care of your body now in order to prepare for a healthier future!

LIVES OF SERVICE

This year Volunteer Services is focusing on service, and the many ways it enriches our own and others’ lives. This profile of Pat Frankel is the third in a series featuring the service of our inspiring Garden Spot Village volunteers.

“Volunteering is very fulfilling. I get much more out of it than I give.”

—Pat Frankel

Pat Frankel loves to make people smile. Inspired by the book, Pollyanna, by Eleanor Porter, Pat says, “You know, if you can make people smile, it makes their day. So, I try to make people smile.” And she’s successful! She volunteers in a variety of positions at Garden Spot Village but her favorite is her 11am-1pm shift on Wednesdays at the Resident Services desk. She takes ownership in her role saying, “I’m the first person visitors see. My tone of voice, my greeting — all of it may be their first impression of Garden Spot Village. I want to make sure it’s a good impression.” Pat also serves where needed with Volunteer Services. She helps in Refresh Gifts & Essentials by running the cash register, taking inventory and pricing incoming products. She also occasionally answers the phones in Maintenance during staff meetings. She says, “Volunteering is very fulfilling. I get much more out of it than I give.” The benefit of living at Garden Spot Village, she says, “You have the option to be as busy as you want to be and as helpful as you want to be.” During her volunteer positions she says, “I meet tremendous people. It’s astonishing to me, the depth and breadth of the people who live here and their experiences.” Pat also served as volunteer coordinator for the Garden Spot Village Marathon this past April, recruiting 165 volunteers to serve on the Garden Spot Village campus in a variety of roles and timeslots. While it was a lot of work, she’s laid the groundwork for the future and looks forward to serving again next year. The experience challenged her and connected her more deeply to her community. She says, “I met some really nice people I wouldn’t have otherwise met.” Pat began volunteering in April 2015 and has been a steady presence, filling in wherever Volunteer Services needs her. And on her way to and from volunteering and while she serves she smiles and greets the friends she’s made, encouraging them to smile too.
