WELLNESS

Lauren Graber, Director of Wellness

OCTOBER IS STRENGTH MONTH IN THE WELLNESS DEPARTMENT There are two types of Strength we focus on this month 1.

Physical Strength the quality or state of being physically strong. “cycling can help you build up your strength” synonyms: power · brawn · brawniness · muscle · muscularity · burliness Strength training — also known as weight or resistance training — is physical activity designed to improve muscular fitness by exercising a specific muscle or muscle group against external resistance, including free- weights, weight machines, or your own body weight. Physiologically, the benefits of consistent strength training include an increase in muscle size and tone, increased muscular strength, and increases in tendon, bone, and ligament strength. Lifting weights has also been shown to improve psychological health as well, by increasing self-esteem, confidence, and self-worth.

2. Inner Strength a good or beneficial quality or attribute of a person or thing. “the strengths and weaknesses of their sales and marketing operation” synonyms: strong point · advantage · asset · forte · strong suit · long suit · aptitude It is having hope where hope was once lost and holding onto faith even through the darkest of times. It’s about finding the strength to move forward and leave your past behind, but never forgetting how you got to where you are in this moment in time. Pick up a copy the October Strength calendar at the Wellness Lobby or Apartment Suites Lobby

WELLNESS PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT: FITNESS FUN! Tuesdays & Thursdays 10am, Fitness Room

We can play singles or doubles. We need at least 6 people to have enough to play. (Before the GSV Wellness Department invests in updating our pingpong equipment). If you have any interest in resurrecting old ping-pong skills or just learning a new “sport,” let Dave Starnes know wdsras@aol.com or 215.353.7672. VOLUNTEER SERVICES

Deborah Fast, Director of Volunteer Services

LIVES OF SERVICE

This year Volunteer Services is focusing on service, and the many ways it enriches our own and others’ lives. This profile of the mail room volunteers is part of a series featuring the service of our inspiring Garden Spot Village volunteers. When you open your mailbox and pull out your mail, it’s hard to imagine how many hands have helped direct the letters and magazines to the right place. Each day 12 to 14 volunteers help to process about 1200 pieces of mail for 550 residents. From the mailroom to the mailbox—the volunteers work diligently to make sure your mail arrives safely. Each morning, just before 10am, the Maintenance Department picks up the mail at the New Holland Post Office and delivers it to the mailroom. Volunteers take over at this point, sorting the mail and packages into carts for apartments, care areas and administration. A second set of volunteers takes the sorted mail to the respective wings and sorts the mail further, into resident boxes by noon. Different volunteers serve each day. Volunteer Services reports that 128 people volunteer with the mailroom throughout the year. Lee and Charlie Till sort the mail for Village Square Apartments every Tuesday. Lee says, “Volunteering with the mailroom helps us to get to know people who live in our part of the community. We enjoy doing it together.” Residents are appreciative, she says. “People walk past and say thank you.” Pat Bowermaster sorts and places mail in the Apartment Suites mailboxes about 10 times a month. Pat says, “You meet people, who they are, where they live.” When asked why she volunteers she says, “Volunteering comes naturally. I wouldn’t know what I would do if I didn’t volunteer.” Mary Alice Black, one of six mailroom coordinators, says, “I am so appreciative of the team of mailroom volunteers. They so efficiently and cheerfully carry out the important task of delivering the mail each day. It is especially rewarding to me as I have gotten to know so many dear residents and staff over the past 14 years.” TIPS TO HELP THE MAILROOM VOLUNTEERS: • Sorting mistakes can happen. Before opening your mail, please check to be sure your name is on it. If you receive the wrong mail by mistake, please put the unopened envelope in the in-house slot and it will be rerouted. • Stamps are sold only in Refresh Gifts & Essentials. • Letters and packages are weighed at Resident Services. • Outgoing mail should be in the mailroom by 10:30am to ensure it will go out that day. • Please use apartment numbers and room numbers when giving out your address, as well as when sending in-house mail. • In-house mail to apartments, care areas, and administration is delivered Monday through Saturday. • In-house cottage mail is delivered only on Friday. In-house cottage mail needs to be in the mailroom by 10:30am Thursday morning so it can be filed into the appropriate folders for Friday delivery. Important: if you live in a cottage, carriage house or at Sycamore Springs, do not include 433 S Kinzer Avenue as part of your address; doing so will slow down your delivery and you will only receive the mail on the Friday after it is received in the mailroom. • In-house mail does not require postage. Volunteers provide that complimentary service to residents and administration. • When you receive a package, mailroom volunteers will place a key to the package mailbox in your mailbox. After retrieving your package, please return the key as instructed below: • Gardens North/Gardens West - place the package key in the wooden box on the counter at the mail room. • Gardens South - place the package key in the wooden box located on the counter by the mailboxes. • Gardens East - place the package key into the in-house mail slot. • Village Square Apartments, take the key to the Resident Services. • If you need to have your mail forwarded to a Power of Attorney or other representative, contact your social worker with the forwarding request. They, in turn, will alert Volunteer Services of the change. • If you are going away and want to place a hold on your mail, notify Resident Services. They will inform Volunteer Services, and the mail room will hold your mail until you return.
