CAMPUS SERVICES

Scott Ruth, Director of Campus Services

DOG DAYS OF SUMMER! We have certainly been entrenched in summer’s grip over the last 30 days. Heat, humidity and high temperatures have turned the lawns a crispy brown. However, at the time of writing this article, we’ve been blessed with a few pop-up thunderstorms to help soften the soil. The Campus Services team has been busy watering all the new and replacement plant installations, as well as trying to wrap up the cottage and carriage home mulching. We do appreciate your patience with the mulching process. Even though we are ahead of last year’s schedule, it seems to still not be quite fast enough. Please know we will be looking seriously into better options for 2021. Messner Tree Service did a fantastic job in early July of removing over a dozen trees and pruning many more. They will be back in early August to grind out the stumps left behind and complete additional pruning and removals. Eagle Lawn Service delayed the summer lawn application due to the heat stress, and will apply as the weather allows. Mr. Windows completed round one and two of the cottage and carriage home power washing by the end of July. We anticipate that round three to be completed in August/early September, followed by Sycamore Springs East around early October. Spotted lantern fly (SLF) questions will likely arise as the adults emerge later this month. We will apply a basal bark treatment to all the red maples in the cottage and carriage home lawns in order to help suppress the pest. Please be aware the SLF is only a nuisance pest and will not kill your trees or ornamental shrubs. Looking forward to the cool temperatures of September!

HARVEST WEEK

TO REPLACE 2020 FALL FESTIVAL Mark your calendars for Harvest Week, Monday, October 5 through Saturday, October 10. The committee is very excited to bring you a week of different opportunities in order to celebrate the fall season, and become closer as a campus community. These events will only be open to staff and residents, due to COVID restrictions and ongoing efforts to keep residents safe and healthy.

No Fairs?! No Problem! As local counties cancel their Farmers’ Fairs, we have used that as inspiration for Harvest Week. Residents and staff will have the opportunities to enjoy some of that local fair flavor right here on campus, including your favorite fair foods and activities.

Fall Festival Favorites Return • Apple Pie Contest: Registration forms with the rules are available in the Administrative Office and at Resident Services. • Country Store: Shop for handcrafted, high-quality items that will be priced and ready to sell. Look for a display of items to begin Friday, September 4, and rotate weekly in the area of the Fulton Bank and Theater. A display of items will also be for sale in the Chapel, Friday, October 9, 12-6pm, and Saturday, October 10, 8am–2pm. • Gift Basket Silent Auction: Attendees can bid on the baskets during the week, and bidding will end at noon on Saturday.

New for Harvest Week• Harvest Week Handicraft Exhibits: This is your opportunity to submit traditional farm show items for exhibit and a chance to win a ribbon! We won’t be showing off livestock, but you will be able to enter items in many fun categories, such as: needlecraft, photography, handmade clothing, paintings, artwork, sculpture using recycled materials, homegrown produce, flower arrangements and more. We are looking forward to hosting a fun week for all residents and staff. Questions? Call Allison Cuthie (6153).

THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR TIME AND GENEROSITY June 30 brought another fiscal year to a close. Although it was a very different year that ended with the challenges of COVID-19, residents were still very generous with their gifts and their volunteer time making a difference in the lives of others. In addition to annual gifts for the Benevolent Fund, more residents joined the Legacy Society because of bequests or charitable gift annuities. The Benevolent Fund was named by all of them to receive legacy gifts. The Wood Shop members had a special campaign to raise money for the renovation and expansion of the Wood Shop. This exciting project will benefit the Benevolent Fund because of beautiful items that will be handcrafted to be sold. The updated Wood Shop will also bring joy to current and future members Several other special gifts were given such as the bee extractor and funds for the Pavilion to benefit memory support residents at Meadow View. Special gifts were also given in support of expenses incurred from COVID-19. Although some of the traditional events were postponed or canceled, several events did take place before COVID-19. Your volunteer time and generosity contributed to their success. You have touched the lives of others because you shared your time and generosity. For residents who have benefited, I say thank you.

MARKETING

Scott Miller, Chief Marketing Officer

Our Half Marathon, 10K and Kids Half Marathon were virtual this year. In other words, rather than coming to Garden Spot to run, people ran at home, sent us their results and we mailed them their medal and goodies. The virtual race raised $25,000 for the benevolent fund! Additionally, there is a new Sycamore Springs model and it is gorgeous. It has a loft, huge windows and a lot of light! There are single floor and loft style homes available. If you have family or friends who have been thinking about Sycamore Springs, please invite them to come see the model. They can make an appointment with Kelly or Megan and live here before the end of the year. Three more Sycamore Springs homes were spoken for in July and there are only sixteen still available out of fifty.

WELCOME CHAPLAIN KARYN NANCARVIS!

I am happy to announce that Karyn Nancarvis will be joining the Pastoral Services staff in August! As I have interacted with Karyn during the interview process, I have appreciated her commitment to Jesus and her heart of ministry. I believe that she will be a wonderful addition to the Garden Spot Village Community. Chaplain Karyn will use the office next to mine and typically will be on campus Monday through Thursday. Please stop by her office, introduce yourself and welcome her to Garden Spot Village. For more about Karyn, see her bio below. ~ Chet Yoder

A recent graduate of Eastern Mennonite Seminary, Karyn earned her Master of Divinity degree in May 2020, finishing with a completed course on Circle Processes at the Summer Peacebuilding Institute of the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding in 2020. Karyn completed one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education in 2019 and earned a Certificate in Ministry Leadership in 2015. She serves on the Board of the Shalom Project Lancaster and is Chair of the Atlantic Coast Mennonite Conference Youth Committee. Growing in an authentic, personal relationship with Christ, she is a deep listener with positive energy. She is passionately focused on the care, spiritual guidance and emotional support of others. A life-long learner and avid runner, she seeks out quality time with her husband Tim, three adult and two teenage children. She’s a member of Akron Mennonite Church and resides in Lititz.

In August, Chaplain Marian Harnish will be transitioning to an End of Life Doula role at Garden Spot Village. Please look for a fuller description of this ministry in the September Garden Variety.

INTRODUCING THE NEWEST SOCIAL WORKER TO JOIN OUR TEAM! My name is Margaret Murry and it is with great joy and excitement that I introduce myself to you! I joined the GSV Social Services team in June as a Skilled Care social worker. Since I started my job in the midst of a pandemic, it has not been easy to make “in person” introductions. My hope is that in the coming months I will have the opportunity to meet all of you. I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you a bit about myself. I was born and raised in Lancaster County and later attended Millersville University where I attained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work and later a Master’s degree in Social Work. My life has been blessed with six years of Social Work experience including serving older adults in Independent Living, Personal Care and Skilled Care at another local CCRC. At this time my husband and I continue to live in Lancaster on our family farm. I would like you all to know that it is truly my honor to be able to use my past experience in service to you and your loved ones.

THE POWER OF PRAYER

by Juanita Fox, Director of Media Experiences and Storytelling In the late 1980s, on the shores of Cape Cod, SaraJane Munshower walked her first labyrinth. It was an old cement labyrinth in disrepair, she recalls. “In spite of all that, I walked into the presence of God and could see the Holy Spirit moving in my life.” Since that experience, SaraJane has walked labyrinths in 25 states, as well as Ireland and Scotland. SaraJane says, “Walking through a labyrinth is an opportunity to embody prayer—to make prayer a full-body experience.” The process of releasing, receiving and returning is a spiritual practice that can bring growth to your life. Like every spiritual practice, your experience may ebb and flow. The discipline of returning to the path, time and again with an expectant spirit—an open heart and open hands—brings growth. SaraJane adds, “Walking a labyrinth takes us out of linear thinking, reminds us of the circular nature of time, and helps us rest in the present moment.” Invitation to Pray In cooperation with Chaplain Chet Yoder and Director of Life Enrichment Colleen Musselman, SaraJane created a new tool to inspire people to use the labyrinth as a spiritual discipline, especially now that the United States is grappling with issues of racism, in addition to the coronavirus pandemic. The tool includes a section entitled “The Labyrinth: A Path for These Times,” with the following invitation to pray specifically for • national and international leadership and governance • people who are suffering the most because of the pandemic • our understanding of racism within and all around us Examining our World View Once again, the topic of racial equality has emerged from the social arena of our culture. At Garden Spot we are not exempt from, nor innocent of, its impact. Indeed, racial inequality touches the lives of everyone in this country, and much of the world. Now, more than ever, we are obliged to understand its presence within and all around us. To that end, Garden Spot is offering opportunities for study and conversation based on a selection of books by black authors. The reading selections will include different genres and perspectives—memoir, religious, social, historical. Groups will form with six to twelve persons per book, for varying numbers of weeks, depending upon the length of the book. Each group will have two co-facilitators. Please consider being part of this effort to learn more about diversity in the United States, and to open your heart to new understandings. Together we might discover what, even in our later years, we have to contribute to the healing of our families, our communities, and ultimately to our nation. For more information, please contact Chet Yoder at (6203) or SaraJane Munshower at 860.604.5098 or pick up your walking guide at the Apartment Suites Welcome Center.

VOLUNTEER SERVICES Deborah Fast, Director of Volunteer Services

RIT TREADWELL: SATISFIED TO SERVE

written by Rachel Hungerford, Marketing Intern When Rit Treadwell visited Garden Spot for the first time, he heard about the Wood Shop. He had his own workshop in the basement of his home, so the chance to keep working with his hands was exciting. Now, Rit volunteers six hours a day in the Wood Shop, helping with the current expansion. Along with other members of the Wood Shop, he helped remove the old cabinets and move the equipment, tables and cabinets down the hall to the former shuffleboard room. The group is hoping to have the renovation finished this fall. Rit enjoys being involved in the Wood Shop. On the leadership side, he’s served as vice president and president; currently, he serves as the safety officer. On the project side, he’s crafted birdhouses for the silent auction in winter—last year, he made six birdhouses. He cites his wife Anne as a common source of inspiration. “She has so many ideas,” he says. Recently, he rebuilt the birdhouse in the Legacy Garden; the house has 12 different apartments, one for each bird. Anne painted the house. He’s also built tables and benches to sell at the Fall Festival. His favorite piece to date is a shaker-style table with a drawer. “I never thought I would be able to make something like that,” he says, “but Bill George helped me.” Besides the Wood Shop, Rit is also involved with the annual marathon at Garden Spot. He coordinates volunteers to assist with parking—an integral role for the marathon to run smoothly. Last year, he put in almost 50 hours of service, which included guiding 1,200 cars to be parked. Additionally, Rit has a part-time job driving cars for New Holland Auto Group. He works every one or two weeks, anywhere from 2 to 14 hours. Previously, he worked as a tractor trailer driver for 44 years, so driving is routine for him. Rit and Anne originally lived in Connecticut, but moved to Pennsylvania after seeing a house they liked while vacationing. Then they moved to Maine for a time. After that, they moved back to Pennsylvania, but returned to Maine when they were unable to sell their house. Looking to live in Pennsylvania again at Anne's suggestion, they checked out Garden Spot Village. At first, Rit wasn’t sure about the move. But, “we took a tour of cottages and we liked it,” he says. He likes that they don’t have to worry about upkeep or snow removal—maintenance and facility services take care of that. What would Rit say to those thinking about volunteering? “It’s very satisfying,” he says. “At the end of the day you know you’ve helped someone.”

If you need the course to preserve your insurance discount, refer to the AARP Smart Driver online course. AARP is offering a 25% discount. Visit www.aarpdriversafety.org
