Providing opportunities for adults to GO out into our community, DO the thing that is in front of us, HELP others and make a difference.

SAMARITAN'S PURSE SHOEBOXES & PACK-A-PALLOOZA October 1-31

Since 1993 Samaritan’s Purse has delivered more than 157 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in need in more than 150 countries and territories. To support their work, during the month of October, we will collect gift-filled shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. Place completed boxes in the wooden barrel next to the Post Office by the Apartment Suites Lobby. If you are unable to pack your own shoebox for Operation Christmas Child, but still want to bless young children around the world, join the Pack-a-Palooza on Tuesday, October 22 from 9-11am in the Chapel, where we will fill boxes with fun, child-friendly items. To learn more about Operation Christmas Child, visit their website: www.samaritanspurse.org/occ. For more information, please contact Life Enrichment (6007).

THANK YOU...

LADIES RETREAT NOVEMBER 9, SATURDAY, 9:30AM-2PM, CHAPEL GUEST SPEAKER, ROBBI DONALDSON

We will be encouraged in this season of our lives to Never Give Up! Robbi will share 2 Corinthians 4:7-18, “Therefore we do not give up; even though our outer person is being destroyed, our inner person is being renewed day by day.” We will be reminding each other how God has picked us up time after time and how we glorify God in our bodies, even when they betray us. He will see each of us through; what glory that will be! Bobbi brings a wealth of true life stories from decades of joyfully walking with God through hard places. She is the wife of a missionary pilot, who earlier served in the Phillipines, the Amazon jungles of Peru and the Middle East. Her aunt, Eloise Wisneski who has friends at GSV, will accompany Bobbi with music. She says “We are quite the duo lately. She still plays piano and organ at her church, choosing all the music, and during the school year she teaches more than 20 piano students at a small Christian school.” Bring a friend. Register at Resident Services by November 5. Lunch on your own at any GSV lunch venue. I am excited for an encouraging day together. Questions? Call Marian Harnish (6235).

GSV CLUB FOCUS

Colleen Musselman, Director of Life Enrichment

CRAFTERS, CROSS STITCH, QUILTERS written by Juanita Fox, GSC Storyteller

Many people contribute to the success of the annual Fall Festival. We highlight a few of the clubs that create merchandise to sell at the Fall Festival, in anticipation of this annual day of fun and fundraising! CROSS STITCH When Rachel Mertz moved to Garden Spot Village in July 2013 her friend Alice Kuhn invited her to join the cross stitch group. “I didn’t know how to cross stitch, but it didn’t matter. I started with tiny little Christmas ornaments and learned how. I enjoy the camaraderie. We sit here, we share stories and we laugh.” The camaraderie is exactly why Doris Baumbach and Trudy Kuserk teamed up to invite women to form a cross stitch group in 1999. It was a great way to be creative and at the same time build relationships in the community. The group meets every Thursday afternoon to stitch. They create pictures and other cross stitch art, which they sell, and then donate the proceeds to the Benevolent Fund. They sell their art at the Birdhouse Show and Silent Auction in February and at the Fall Festival in October. In November they hang cross stitch pictures in the Main Street Art Gallery and offer them for sale. In addition, they sell Christmas ornaments and other items in the glass case and fully decorated, small Christmas trees in the parlor adjacent to The Creamery. CRAFTERS “In the Crafters group you don’t really do anything on your own. You really need other people for ideas, for finishing touches and to make your ideas better,” says Hagar Scott, who co-leads the Crafters with Barbara Murphy. And the ideas are always evolving. “We always welcome new people with new ideas,” Barbara adds. The group exists solely to make crafts to sell at events throughout the year. The ladies donate playing card holders, bowl cozies, punch needle embroidery, penny rugs and other crafts to be sold at the Fall Festival and the Birdhouse Show and Silent Auction. They also host spring and Christmas table sales. They donate all of the proceeds from their sales (which average well over $2,000 each year!) to the Benevolent Fund. QUILTERS Every day a handful of women gathers around a large wooden quilt frame in the quilt room to add stitches and memories to the current project. The group ebbs and flows as the days pass, but their focus remains the same—to share their art of quilting with others and to benefit the Benevolent Fund. “I have a passion for quilting and I love creating,” says Sally Rapp, Garden Spot Village resident since August 2011. As president, Sally leads quilters as they take on new projects and prepare quilts, wall hangings, coverlets and more for the Birdhouse Show and Silent Auction, the Fall Festival and Christmas table sales. In total, about 15 women with a variety of skill sets form the quilters group. Some of the women hand quilt while others machine quilt. Some of the women enjoy piecing or binding. VOLUNTEER SERVICES Deborah Fast, Director of Volunteer Services GLADYS KOLB: A HEART TO BLESS OTHERS

“Dan and I, our prayer for each day is, ‘Who can we bless today?’” says Gladys Kolb, who moved to Garden Spot Village in April 2018 with her husband Dan from Spring City, Pennsylvania. Gladys truly lives her prayer, reaching out to people around her and ministering one-on-one through Caring Connections and A Quiet Presence. An LPN by trade, Gladys most recently worked as the charge nurse in personal care at Peter Becker Community in Harleysville. This experience, as well as her caring, compassionate nature, shines through her involvement here at Garden Spot Village. “I’ve always liked to encourage others, to bless others and be available for however God can use me,” Gladys says. “If it’s a smile, a word of encouragement, I’m happy to share it. I appreciate the freedom I have to pray with others through Caring Connections.” Gladys also volunteers in Mountain View, helping Diane Pechart, Personal Care activity director, with outings and other events. She and Dan also helped at a recent community meal sponsored by Garden Spot Village at CrossNet Youth Ministries. Gladys says, “When I serve and love others I’m serving and loving Jesus.” She is thankful she has the availability to help others. “I appreciate that there are so many opportunities at Garden Spot,” Gladys continues. “There is something for everyone. WELLNESS OCTOBER IS STRENGTH MONTH Get Stronger, Leaner & Healthier

There are eight Facets to the Framework of your wellness. They are Fitness, Faith, Finances, Footprint, Food, Family & Friends, Feelings and Focus. Strength training is an important part of an overall fitness program.

Lauren Graber, Director of Wellness

Research shows that a single set of 12 to 15 repetitions with the proper weight can build muscle efficiently in most people and can be as effective as three sets of the same exercise. To give your muscles time to recover, rest one full day between exercising each specific muscle group.

USE IT OR LOSE IT! Lean muscle mass naturally diminishes with age.

Also be careful to listen to your body. If a strength training exercise causes pain, stop the exercise. Consider trying a lower weight or trying it again in a few days.

You'll increase the percentage of fat in your body if you don't do anything to replace the lean muscle you lose over time. Strength training can help you preserve and enhance your muscle mass at any age.

If you're new to weight training, work with a trainer or other fitness specialist in order to learn correct form and technique.

STRENGTH TRAINING MAY ALSO HELP YOU:

WHEN TO EXPECT RESULTS You don't need to spend hours a day lifting weights to benefit from strength training. You can see significant improvement in your strength with just two or three 20- or 30-minute weight training sessions a week.

Want to reduce body fat, increase lean muscle mass and burn calories more efficiently? Strength training to the rescue!

• Develop strong bones. By stressing your bones, strength training can increase bone density and reduce the risk of osteoporosis. • Manage your weight. Strength training can help you manage or lose weight, and it can increase your metabolism to help you burn more calories. • Enhance your quality of life. Strength training may enhance your quality of life and improve your ability to do everyday activities. Building muscle also can contribute to better balance and may reduce your risk of falls. This can help you maintain independence as you age. • Manage chronic conditions. Strength training can reduce the signs and symptoms of many chronic conditions, such as arthritis, back pain, obesity, heart disease, depression and diabetes. • Sharpen your thinking skills. Some research suggests that regular strength training and aerobic exercise may help improve thinking and learning skills for older adults. CONSIDER THE OPTIONS. STRENGTH TRAINING CAN BE DONE AT HOME OR IN THE GYM. COMMON CHOICES INCLUDE: • Body weight. You can do many exercises with little or no equipment. Try pushups, pullups, planks and leg squats. • Resistance tubing. Resistance tubing is inexpensive, lightweight tubing that provides resistance when stretched. You can choose from many types of resistance tubes in nearly any sporting goods store. • Free weights. Barbells and dumbbells are classic strength training tools. If you don't have weights at home, you can use soup cans. • Weight machines. The Garden Spot Village Wellness Department has state of the art resistance machines. GETTING STARTED If you have a chronic condition, or haven't been active recently, check with your doctor before beginning a strength training or aerobic fitness program. Before beginning strength training, consider warming up with brisk walking or another aerobic activity for five or 10 minutes. Cold muscles are more prone to injury than are warm muscles. Choose a weight or resistance level heavy enough to tire your muscles after about 12 to 15 repetitions. When you can easily do more repetitions of a certain exercise, gradually increase the weight or resistance.
