DEVELOPMENT ANGEL TREE

As 2018 draws to a close, it is a time to remember and honor our loved ones and friends. Again this year, you are invited to place an angel or angels on the Christmas trees that will soon spring up in the Chapel Lobby. Please consider purchasing an angel in memory/honor of the special people in your life.

FALL FESTIVAL FIRST PRIZE-WINNING APPLE PIE RECIPE Congratulations to Christy Turner, Dining Services Manager at GSV, for winning first place in the Fall Festival Apple Pie Contest. She was also kind enough to share her recipe, in the event you want to include it in your baking this holiday season!

Maple-Apple Pie with Walnut Crumble Topping Directions:

*New this year: When purchasing an angel, you have the opportunity to submit a photo to be included in a slideshow that will run during the Celebration of Life Ceremony, Thursday, December 13, 6pm in the Chapel. Doors will open at 5:30pm for attendees to view a special slideshow honoring GSV residents who have passed away in the last year. Angels are $10 each, and funds raised benefit the Benevolent Fund. Stop by the Chapel Lobby during the following dates and times to place yours!

1. Make the crust: process ¾ c. flour, salt, and sugar together in food processor until combined. Add butter and shortening, and process for 10 seconds (dough will resemble cottage cheese curds). Scrape down sides and bottom of bowl with a rubber spatula and redistribute dough evenly around processor blade. Add remaining ½ c. flour and pulse until mixture is evenly distributed around the bowl.

Ingredients: CRUST

1 ¼ c. all-purpose flour ½ tsp. salt

• Monday, Dec. 3, 9:30-11:30am • Tuesday, Dec. 4, 9:30-11:30am • Thursday, Dec. 6, 9:30-11:30am

1 T. granulated sugar

Personal notes can be written on beautiful paper angels, and placed on the trees. Names of individuals will also be recorded in the Angel Tree Book, and read aloud at the Celebration of Life ceremony, while a photo slideshow plays.

¼ c. solid vegetable shortening, chilled and cut into 2 pieces

6 T. unsalted butter, chilled, cut into ¼ slices

2 T. vodka, chilled 2 T. ice water FILLING

¼ c. granulated sugar

THANK YOU FALL FESTIVAL SPONSORS If you know individuals who work for the following sponsors, please extend appreciation to them for their company’s sponsorship of the 2018 Garden Spot Village Fall Festival.

Sodexo Everence

Johnson Kendall Johnson Unruh Insurance Agency, Inc. Lancaster County Podiatry

Linda Dodge, CFRE, Director of Development

2 T. all-purpose flour 1 ½ tsp. ground cinnamon ¼ tsp. salt 6 medium Golden Delicious or Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced 1 T. lemon juice 2 T. maple syrup 1 T. unsalted butter, cut into small cubes CRUMBLE TOPPING

1 c. all-purpose flour

½ c. granulated sugar ¼ c. light brown sugar 1 ½ t. ground cinnamon ½ tsp. salt 6 T chilled unsalted butter cut into ½ inch cubes ½ c. walnuts, coarsely chopped

2. Sprinkle vodka and water over mixture. (You can substitute the vodka with the same amount of ice water.) With a rubber spatula, use folding motion to mix, pressing down on dough until dough is slightly tacky and sticks together. Flatten dough into 4-inch disk. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 45 minutes or up to two days. 3. On a floured surface, roll the dough into a 12-inch circle. Transfer dough to a 9-inch pie plate and gently ease the dough into the pie plate. Leave any dough that overhangs the plate in place, wrap the dough-lined pie plate loosely in the plastic and place in the freezer for at least one hour. 4. Trim the overhang to ½ inch beyond the lip of the plate. Crimp the dough around the edges. Wrap the doughlined plate in plastic and place in the freezer for 1 hour. 5. Meanwhile, prepare the filling. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. In a small bowl, whisk together the sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with the lemon juice to coat. Add the sugar mixture and toss together until all of the apples are evenly coated with the mixture. 6. Make the crumble topping: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, sugars, cinnamon and salt. Add chilled butter cubes; using a pastry blender, cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles wet sand. Stir in chopped walnuts. 7. Bake the Pie: Toss the apple mix and turn into chilled crust. Drizzle with maple syrup and dot with the butter. Cover with crumble mixture. 8. Place the pie plate on a rimmed baking sheet and bake until the topping is golden, about 40 minutes. Reduce to 350 degrees, and bake until the apples are tender, about 5 minutes.

Scam Reminder

Unfortunately, phone and email scams are common, and we need to be vigilant in how we respond. Please do NOT send money to callers posing as attorneys or law officers or the IRS. Always be cautious and suspicious. Ask for contact information from the caller in order to call them right back. Never respond to a supicious email. Before proceeding, please review any contacts like this with your GSV Social Worker, a family member or someone with power of attorney over your estate. Legitimate requests for information or payment would come from a trusted source, or by US Mail. Again, always be cautious and suspicious. If you have any questions, feel free to contact you GSV Social Worker or GSV Administration.

Holiday Blues

While the commercial world in which we live paints the holidays as a beautiful time of togetherness, coziness, and delight, that quintessential “holiday spirit” is not the reality for many people. In fact, it is not unusual for this season to trigger old hurts and draw attention to losses. If this is your reality, take comfort in knowing you are not alone and this is not unusual. Please reach out to a social worker, friend, or clergy.

VOLUNTEER SERVICES Deborah Fast, Director of Volunteer Services

LIVES OF SERVICE

“Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” –Fred Rogers At Garden Spot Village the helpers are everywhere. In every corner of the community, volunteers help in ways that reflect their life experiences, their interests, their passions. Ruthann Ware is one of those helpers who works diligently in the background, serving in ways that others don’t always see. Director of Volunteer Services Deborah Fast says, “Ruthann is a quiet but very active volunteer who touches many lives in a meaningful way through her service.” When asked about her inspiration for serving Ruthann recalls, “My mother cared for people who were alone. She was always helping somebody,” She follows her mother’s example, serving people around her in the Garden Spot Village community. Ruthann, who moved to Garden Spot Village in August 2009 with her husband, Don, selflessly serves people exactly where they are. She volunteers as the co-coordinator of Caring Connections, an innovative relationship-oriented program at Garden Spot Village that connects people who need a friend with people who are willing to spend time with others. Her experience as a geriatric nurse helps Ruthann to connect and understand what people are experiencing as they age. She says, “I pursued nursing as my career because it enabled me to help others.” As people near the end of life, Ruthann delights in serving as the hands and feet of Jesus. She says, “I enjoy sitting with the terminally ill in the last phase of their lives. It is such a blessing to serve the Lord and His people in this way.” As for her reason to serve with Caring Connections Ruthann says, “I have a passion for people who are lonely and need someone to keep them company… I love to smile at people and feel the warmth of their response to a friendly smile.” In addition to serving as a connector herself, she also connects volunteers with people who need a regular visitor, plans the quarterly Caring Connections orientation and plans parties for Caring Connections participants. She also occasionally volunteers to help serve the Garden Spot Village Swipe Out Hunger meal at CrossNet Youth Center on the fourth Monday night of each month.

WELLNESS Lauren Graber, Director of Wellness DECEMBER IS BALANCE MONTH! Improve Your Balance to Prevent Falls:

Five home care tips to help improve your balance, and quality of life: BALANCE EXERCISES: Performing the correct exercises is the most effective way to improve your balance. Speak to your physician before performing these exercises and use caution in order to prevent a fall or other serious injury. COORDINATION AND POSTURE: Coordination and posture play a crucial role in maintaining balance. To help maintain balance, take a deep breath, this will usually align shoulders over hips while standing or sitting. When walking, make sure your nose is never past your toes and step heel-to-toe. EYE EXERCISES: Your eyes’ ability to communicate information to the brain is crucial in maintaining proper balance. Improve your eyesight, and in turn your balance, by performing a simple exercise 4 to 5 times a day. Keep in mind your posture; sit in a sturdy chair and choose an object upon which to focus that is at least 10 to 20 feet away. Keeping your eyes focused on the object, slowly stand from the sitting position and sit back down. Close your eyes and repeat the process of standing and sitting slowly. Use a chair with arm rests if you are having difficulty maintaining your balance during this exercise. HEARING AND EYE CHECKS: Have eyesight and hearing checked on a yearly basis in order to help maintain balance. Hearing plays a vital role in balance and should be monitored for any impairments or needs. Visit your optometrist regularly in order to monitor your eyeglass prescriptions, and update when necessary. Glaucoma, cataracts and other eye conditions also effect balance and must be monitored accordingly. MORE TIPS: Check your medications for any potential side effects that affect your balance. Use a cane or walker when necessary and keep your home well-lit in order to prevent injury. Keep your floors clutter free and pay attention making sure rugs and carpets are firmly attached to the floor. Balance is physical but we also need to find balance in everyday life. Pick up a copy our December Balance calendar either at the Wellness Center or the Apartment Suites Lobby.
