Please place new child-sized hats, scarves, gloves, mittens, and socks in the wooden barrel next to the Post Office by the Apartment Suites Lobby. Refreshing Mountain is a wonderful outdoor adventure experience and they love it when Garden Spot residents and families book their experiences. Refreshing Mountain is now offering you and your family discounts on a variety of adventures. Discounts are also available on gift cards allowing you to give adventure experiences as Christmas gifts. BECAUSE YOU ASKED… 1. REAL ID Information below provided from PennDot.gov

2. EMERGENCY SITUATIONS

What is it? The REAL ID Act is a federal law that affects how states issue drivers licenses and ID cards if they are going to be acceptable for federal purposes, such as boarding a domestic commercial flight, or entering a military installation or federal facility that requires ID.

Getting help for another resident who has fallen and needs assistance getting up

Date and what I will need it for: Beginning October 1, 2020, Pennsylvanians will need a REAL ID –compliant license, identification card or another form of federallyacceptable identification (such as a valid passport or military ID) to: • Board domestic commercial flights • Enter a military base • Enter a federal facility that requires ID at the door Do I have to get a REAL ID? No. REAL ID is optional for Pennsylvania residents. You DO NOT need a REAL ID to: • Drive • Vote • Access hospitals • Visit the post office • Access federal courts • Apply for or receive federal benefits

• If it’s obvious that the person will need attention in a hospital, and you are comfortable doing so, call 911 first. • If the person is wearing a GSV emergency pendant or wrist bracelet, activate it by firmly pressing the button in the center and holding for 2 seconds. The pendant will vibrate and a small light will blink when the equipment is properly activated. Staff will then have the correct name and location of the resident needing assistance. • If neither of the above apply to the situation, call the Fallcrest/Wintergarden Teamroom (6247) in Skilled Nursing. WAIT until this number is answered! The call will bounce to a Supervisor’s cell phone if no one is present in the Teamroom and the phone continues to ring.

VOLUNTEER SERVICES Deborah Fast, Director of Volunteer Services

LIVES OF SERVICE

Share & Care Thrift Store offers a wide selection of gently used furniture, household items and décor. Last year, customers purchased more than $71,000 in goods; each item in the store is donated by residents and staff of Garden Spot Village. The store was established in 2002 as a service to residents, future residents and the community and to generate funds for the Benevolent Fund. For the first 16 years, Share & Care volunteers wrote down each purchase, added sales tax with a calculator and indicated the source of payment in a log book. Some days, if sales were strong, volunteers would take more than an hour to add up the pages of sales and balance the register drawer. EJ Rittersbach, who leads the Share & Care Team, reflects on this past year’s efforts to explore the idea of a computer-based POS system to streamline store operations and, as she says with a smile, “bring us into the 21st Century.” “I love challenges and anything that is technology-related,” says EJ. She championed the idea and in May 2018, Share & Care upgraded their system to computer-based software that mirrors the system in Refresh Gifts & Essentials. For added convenience, staff and residents can now pay with their prox cards. “It was a big project because we needed to reprice every item with a barcode and learn a new system,” says EJ. Although some volunteers were a bit anxious, the Share & Care Volunteers embraced the new system, attending special training sessions. Susan Weaver, who has volunteered in Share & Care for four years was a little nervous at first. She enjoys working in Share & Care because she enjoys the interaction she has with the customers. But the idea of a new computer system was overwhelming. “I didn’t know what to think,” Susan says. “I was tempted to quit, but I thought I would try it. It was easier than I imagined it would be. Now, they have me training other volunteers.” “The barcoding actually makes pricing easier. The system is a little intimidating, but you have to approach it with an open mind,” says Rose Lippolis, who is part of the pricing team at Share & Care. “You have to keep learning new things,” she adds. She also takes a shift at the cash register once a week and says, “The instructions are right at the desk and easy to follow.” EJ adds, “Overall, the POS was a positive move for the shop. It is easier to serve customers. Plus, the new system is much more accurate; it is easier to balance the drawer at the end of the day and we can run reports.” Janice Ford began volunteering in Share & Care in May 2018, right around the time the new POS system was introduced. She brings many years of department store retail experience and says she chose to volunteer with Share & Care because she loves interacting with and helping customers. She encourages others to volunteer their time at Share & Care saying, “It’s not hard. It’s a great way to get to know people who come in the store regularly. When you see them on campus, you recognize each other and begin to interact.” EJ says, smiling, “We’ve got a good working team. We laugh a lot. It’s all for a good cause and it’s worth the time and energy.” Plus she adds, “It’s fun. A lot of work, but it’s fun.”

WELLNESS Lauren Graber, Director of Wellness NOVEMBER IS FLEXIBILITY MONTH IN THE WELLNESS DEPARTMENT There is a difference between flexibility and stretching. Flexibility refers to the range of motion for a given joint. The degree of flexibility that a person has, is influenced by muscles and connective tissues, like ligaments and tendons. Stretching is a form of exercise that can lead to an increase in flexibility. The optimal amount of flexibility is different for everyone. Unless a joint is hurt, limited range of motion may be due to tight or stiff muscles. This is linked to injuries, chronic pain, and poor posture. If your muscles are too tight, then you might need to stretch. However, being too flexible may not be good, either. Muscles that are too loose may be weak. This could cause joint instability and dislocation. If you are overly flexible, then you may need to strengthen your muscles and joints with resistance training. But being able to stretch your leg behind your head is a bit extreme. Everything in moderation — this saying holds true when it comes to flexibility. HERE ARE A FEW STRETCHING TIPS (a detailed list of these tips are available at the Wellness Center) 1. Perform static stretching at the right time. 2. Use dynamic movement as a warm-up for exercise. 3. Don’t overstretch. 4. Don’t bounce. 5. Fact-check your technique. Pick up a copy of the November Flexibility calendar at Wellness Lobby or Apartment Suites Lobby.
