Keep the plants. We’ll take the pot.

Recycle. Recycle your PLASTIC GARDEN POTS, TRAYS & HANGING BASKETS at your participating local garden center this season!

Doing the Environmental Right Thing Starts with Neighborhood Garden Centers 2009 will be year number four for the MNLA Plastics Recycling Program. Thousands of plastic plant pots and polystyrene trays have been kept from the landfill because of consumer interest and a strong commitment by the area’s independent, NEIGHBORHOOD GARDEN CENTERS. Beginning in 2006, local, independently-owned retail nurseries, greenhouses and garden centers took the initiative to care for the environment by taking back the plastic pots that many trees, shrubs and flowers are sold in. In 2008, the polystyrene trays that annuals and other bedding plants are sold in also began to be recycled. Garden centers who are members of the Minnesota Nursery & Landscape Association receive no payment for the plastic they recycle. In fact, it’s an expense to store, stack and then transport the pots to

the plastics processor. You can do your part to help by wiping out excess soil from the pots and by not putting any other waste materials in the collection bins. Whenever possible, garden centers re-use the pots, but that’s not always feasible because of contamination due to potential plant disease and other sanitation issues, plus some pots are returned damaged. For updates on which MNLA garden centers are participating, check GardenMinnesota.com frequently. Hundreds of MNLA-member landscape contractors are also recycling by returning their pots to seven participating wholesale nurseries. Greenhouse plastic is also being recycled at the wholesale level.

oncrete and natural stone retaining walls, paver patios, ponds, fountains and complete outdoor kitchens have become hot landscaping trends in recent years – and for good reason. These “hardscape” elements help extend your home’s livable space, plus increase the value of your home.

8

2009 Garden Minnesota Yearbook

But it’s important to remember that your outdoor living space is not complete until the “greenscapes,” i.e.: plants, are in place. Complementing your new patios or walls with annual and perennial flowers, trees and shrubs is essential to creating a truly polished space. “They’re both important,” says Mark

Madsen, a 30-year veteran landscape designer at Bachman’s Inc. “The green goods give it softness. The hardscapes give it a feeling of permanence. It’s not one or the other. It’s both, and it’s really exciting.” Landscape designers have started looking at the whole picture – planning with both hardscapes and plant life – as

they develop their clients’ dream yard. In an ideal world, most landscape designers would love to start planning your landscape before your house is even built. Incorporating landscape ideas into the initial house design allows designers to make the best use of space and, in some cases, work in tandem with the architect and construction crews. Some landscape elements are chosen for aesthetics – such as sculptures, fountains, ponds, or bright containers of annuals. Some are more functional, like trees that provide shade and windbreak, or retaining walls that can help your yard have more usable area. “It’s all about movement. How do you use the yard?” says Mark Halla, owner of The Mustard Seed in Chaska. Home owners need to consider that question thoroughly to create a design that will incorporate plants and hardscapes into the landscape seamlessly. It’s important to think about how many people each space needs to accommodate and what needs to be accomplished with each space, whether it be the perfect spot for sunbathing or a large place for dining with family and friends. GardenMinnesota.com

While gardening is a great doit-yourself project, it pays to find a professional to assist with landscape design. The Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association offers a listing of professionals on its website, GardenMinnesota.com. Before selecting a landscape designer, make sure to check accreditation, references and a portfolio of previous work. A professional will not only create a balanced, visually pleasing design, but they can also help with the practical logistics of dealing with runoff water and preventing soil erosion. Many landscape designers are also staying on the cutting edge of the environmentally-friendly design trends such as rain gardens and native shoreline plantings (see related story on pages 20-23) or permeable paving systems (see sidebar story on page 12). Whether you’re doing your own landscaping or enlisting the help of a professional, you’ll want to start formulating a concept for your design early on in the process. Gather ideas from the “Get Inspired” section of GardenMinnesota.com, take a look

at sample landscapes and portfolios at various home and garden shows, or simply watch some of the great shows on HGTV and other networks (but a word of warning: plants and landscaping techniques featured on national television programs may not always be applicable to our northern climates!). In addition, visit the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chaska which features a plethora of plants plus an increasing number of hardscape elements throughout its gardens. When it comes to selecting the right materials to complement your home, there’s plenty to choose from. The limitless sizes and colors available in plant materials is nearly matched by the dizzying array of shapes, hues and textures available in natural stone and concrete products. Start the selection process by thinking about the style of your home and your garden. “You typically take clues from the house material,” says Todd Irvine, a landscape architect with Keenan & Svieven Inc. Are you looking for formal elegance? Then you’ll probably want a finished 2009 Garden Minnesota Yearbook

and textures to complement your hardscape, softening its look. Creating focal points with both plants and hardscapes is also important. An ornamental pot or a sculpture can add a fun, whimsical element to a garden, says Clayton Johnson, a landscape designer with Yardscapes, Inc. Fountains and ponds also make dramatic focal points. But whether hardscapes are functioning as focal points, acting as an extension of the house or simply supporting the greenery, it’s the way they balance with plant life that’s important. After all, an outdoor living space that doesn’t pay homage to the beauty of nature probably isn’t worth leaving the air conditioning for. Liz Kohman is a freelance writer.

material that will provide clean, crisp lines. In that case, you can use plantings to frame out, accent and enhance the architecture of your home and hardscape features, says Scott Frampton, co-owner and project manager at Landscape Renovations. Does your yard mimic a Minnesota prairie? Think about decorative boulders and unfinished, rustic materials. “With the green movement there’s a lot of interest in native-type plantings,” Frampton says. Homeowners who are creating outdoor “rooms” with grills, running water, bars, and fireplaces, often choose to extend their decor outside, carrying colors, textures and tiles from the indoors to the outdoors. After the hardscape material is selected, find plants with contrasting colors

Liz Kohman Hardscapes haven’t been immune to the environmentallyaware green movement that has touched almost every aspect of our lives. As hardscapes have grown in popularity, both manufacturers and consumers have looked for ways to make sure backyard upgrades aren’t harming the environment. One of the biggest issues associated with hardscapes is managing runoff water. In general, adding more hard surfaces to landscapes means creating more runoff water. Left unchecked, water from rain showers or even misplaced sprinklers can flow off a hardscape into the nearest sewer and into our rivers and lakes. All of this excess water is creating problems for rivers and lakes, as it can bring pesticides, silt, and other problems with it. “The environmental solutions are coming a long way, and I think we need to look at them because our lakes are getting dirtier all the time,” says Tim Oberg, general manager at Rush Lake Gardens in Inver Grove Heights. “More and more people are starting to look at going the green route.”

The green goods give it softness. The hardscapes give it a feeling of permanence. A well-placed retaining wall can redirect stormwater, says Dave Sonka, a landscape designer with Bever Landscaping and Design. It can also reduce or stop soil erosion that can silt up a nearby lake or stream, and it’ll make a sloping yard easier to maintain in many cases. Permeable paving systems offer another solution for runoff water. The pavers, which allow water to seep between them into soil instead of a storm drain, can be used for patios or driveways. If you’re considering permeable paving, make sure you are hiring a knowledgeable landscape professional with past experience in

this area. Check portfolios and references to see if their previous work has met with success. While controlling runoff water is key to creating an environmentally-friendly yard, other aspects to consider include materials, proximity and production. Minnesota GreenStar, a “building standard and certification program for both existing and new homes that promotes healthy, durable, high performance homes” offers checklists and guidelines for creating environmentally-friendly landscapes at www.mngreenstar.org. Here are a few basic elements to consider: Materials: Some cement products are made with recycled materials or byproducts from other industries, including coal and iron. Composite decking made from recycled milk jugs has also become more prevalent in the past few years. Besides its positive impact on the environment, the decking is also very easy to maintain. Proximity: How far did the stone for your wall travel before it was constructed in your garden? Since stone, cement and other hardscape materials are heavy, transporting them means burning a lot of fuel, which has negative impacts on the environment. It’s important to think about where they’re coming from. Production: Did somebody have to dig up pristine prairies to get the decorative boulders for your prairie-like yard? Make sure that creating a beautiful backyard isn’t coming at a cost to the overall environment.

Midwest SUSTAINABILITY LEADER named MNLA Friend of the Environment

J

im Hagstrom, Savanna Designs, a long-time member of the Minnesota Nursery & Landscape Association, was recently named MNLA’s 2009 Friend of the Environment. H a g s t r o m’s design work has been on the cutting edge since the early 1970s when he took a different track than the leading professionals of the time. His goal was to use native plants in both the corporate and private landscape in the same manner that we use cultivated plants. His work over the years refined that design concept and he has influenced the entire landscape profession in Minnesota and surrounding states. The essence of Jim’s design work is his ability to sort out the qualities of specific native plants in prairie, woodland and wetland, and reassemble 16

2009 Garden Minnesota Yearbook

them in massings that create award winning designs. Working with architects, he uses his native palette to extend a building’s sharp lines into the landscape and the informality of the native landscape up to the building. According to MNLA President Van Cooley, “Jim’s prairie plantings look wild enough to be sexy, but appear maintained and in control through his use of structured elements and clear edges. The results have been stunning. “Hagstrom’s native landscapes are so gorgeous, everyone wants one. His design talent has led to a revolution of the landscapes in the Midwest, and we are healthier for it,” Cooley said. For 30 years, Hagstrom has spoken passionately on environmental issues and challenged members of MNLA as well as the Minnesota chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (MASLA) with ideas. He created seminars with renowned speakers plus has presented dozens

of presentations himself to varied audiences in the Midwest over the last 20 years. The University of Minnesota hired Hagstrom to create and teach an ecological planting design course, where he trained young landscape architects. A past president of MASLA, Hagstrom also served on the MNLA Board of Directors and has been on the MNLA Environmental Concerns Committee for many years. He has won numerous design awards from MNLA which showcased the beauty of native plantings. His action and leadership helped to change opinions in the minds of production nurseries, his fellow landscape professionals, and the public. MNLA values his passion to design with ecology in mind, and his dedication to mentoring young and old landscape professionals to become better stewards.

hile few commodities are truly recession-proof, the nature of the landscape services industry lends itself well to the label: In residential and commercial markets both, responsible landscaping is viewed as a financially and environmentally sound investment. The market is expected to grow 10 percent in the next five years. Win-Win-Win! “Landscape Services Market in the U.S.,” a new report recently released by leading industrial market research publisher SBI, provides an in-depth treatment of this under-investigated market. SBI (Specialists in Business Information) publishes research reports in the industrial, energy, building/construction, automotive/ transportation and packaging markets. For more information, visit http://www. sbireports.com. Increased awareness in both the public and private sectors of environmental issues is a major driver of landscape installations, making landscaping a source of aesthetic, ecological, and financial improvements. Major trends reported in “Landscape Services Market in the U.S.” as critical growth factors include green landscape designs and installations that can reduce costs of heating, cooling, electric, and water costs by as much as 50 percent. Green roofs are an aspect of this trend that are seeing increased residential demand. The ‘nesting’ trend that evolved in the aftermath of 9/11 and resurged following the housing downturn is still strong. Only landscape professionals have the expertise necessary in a trend that is blurring the indoor/outdoor line. Homeowners are building luxury kitchen, dining, and entertainment areas into meticulously designed, 18

natural looking outdoor settings that enhance home values and function. The growing trend of xeriscaping – a gardening approach that utilizes native vegetation, conserves water and is lowmaintenance – is also covered in this report. “Landscape services is a growing industry with a lot of buzz about it right now,” said Shelley Carr, associate publisher for SBI. “The need for professionals to meet the demand in the next five years and all the opportunities in this market makes this an exciting industry to grow with.”

Information and photos from the Blue Thumb program

W

hether you know it or not, every home in Minnesota is lakefront property. Your street is connected to lakes and rivers through underground storm sewer pipes – so what happens on your block affects the environment “downstream.” Stormwater runoff is our nation’s biggest water quality threat, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Stormwater runoff whisks pollutants from our streets to our lakes and streams via storm drains. In our area, the Blue Thumb program is working to educate consumers that planting for clean water is part of the solution to water pollution because it mimics nature and natural hydrology. In natural landscapes, rain tends to soak into the ground gradually. However, nowadays, much of the land is covered by impervious surfaces - such as streets, parking lots and roofs - where the water cannot soak into the ground. Blue Thumb plantings help infiltrate water back into the ground and stop the stormwater runoff. GardenMinnesota.com G Gar Ga ard ar deeen den nM Miin Min inn nees nes esota ottaa.c o ..co cco o om m

WHAT’S A RAIN GARDEN?

Rain gardens are simply gardens with depressions that are designed to catch rainwater runoff in your yard, growing plants that tolerate getting partially flooded on occasion. They provide beautiful landscaping and wildlife habitat. And, by soaking up rain where it falls, they slow stormwater runoff, help prevent erosion, and remove pollutants in the process. SHORELINES

Like a rain garden, properly planted shorelines can prevent or slow runoff into streams, rivers and lakes. In addition, using native plants on shorelines can help slow erosion. The chart on page 23 describes the benefits of shoreline plantings.

lanting flowering annuals, perennials and shrubs obviously will bring color to your landscape. But plant the right annuals, perennials and shrubs and you’ll double your color – by attracting butterflies! In addition, butterflies are environmentally important because they help to pollinate plant populations plus play a part in the ecological food chain. “You should select a variety of nectarproducing plants with the aim of providing flowers in bloom throughout the season,” says Dr. Vera Krischik of the University of Minnesota Department of Entomology. “This

will entice a continuous succession of new visitors to a yard. It is especially important to have flowers in mid to late summer, when most butterflies are active. Flowers with multiple florets that produce abundant nectar are ideal.” To facilitate butterfly populations, Krischik also recommends that gardeners avoid the use of broad spectrum pesticides sprayed all around the yard. Instead, use more benign spot treatments on plants troubled with pest insects. For pest insects, use alternative control methods such as oils, soaps, and microbial insecticides such as Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). Krischik said, “Remember that oils and soaps still kill caterpillars if sprayed directly on them and that they also will die if they feed on plants treated with a Bt formulation that is toxic to them.”

rees are energy saving, property value enhancing, carbon sequestering, runoff collecting machines! The following statistics provide testament to just how important trees are for your home and community. “The net cooling effect of a young, healthy tree is equivalent to ten roomsize air conditioners operating 20 hours a day.” —U.S. Department of Agriculture “Landscaping can reduce air conditioning costs by up to 50 percent, by shading the windows and walls of a home.” —American Public Power Association “If you plant a tree today on the west side of your home, in 5 years your energy bills should be 3% less. In 15 years the savings will be nearly 12%.” —Dr. E. Greg McPherson, Center for Urban Forest Research “A mature tree can often have an appraised value of between $1,000 and $10,000.” —Council of Tree and Landscape Appraisers “In one study, 83% of realtors believe that mature trees have a “strong or moderate impact” on the salability of homes listed for under $150,000; on homes over $250,000, this perception increases to 98%.” —Arbor National Mortgage & American Forests “Landscaping, especially with trees, can increase property values as much as 20 percent.” —Management Information Services/ICMA

“One acre of forest absorbs six tons of carbon dioxide and puts out four tons of oxygen. This is enough to meet the annual needs of 18 people.” —U.S. Department of Agriculture

“If you plant a tree today on the west side of your home, in 5 years your energy bills should be 3% less. In 15 years the savings will be nearly 12%.”

“There are about 60-to 200- million spaces along our city streets where trees could be planted. This translates to the potential to absorb 33 million more tons of CO2 every year, and saving $4 billion in energy costs.” —National Wildlife Federation “The planting of trees means improved water quality, resulting in less runoff and erosion. This allows more recharging of the groundwater supply. Wooded areas help prevent the transport of sediment and chemicals into streams.” —USDA Forest Service To learn more, see www.arborday.org.

My favorite tree is Bur oak. I love the rough, rugged look as the bark begins to take on its character, the big mossy acorns and the majestic silhouette of the mature tree. It just speaks of strength. Tim Vogel Bailey Nurseries, Inc.

My favorite tree is the ‘Princeton’ elm tree. This tree is a fast growing tree with very good structure. Hopefully our city arborists start to plant these on the boulevards to replace the once magnificent elm tree, which lined streets back in the 1960s and 1970s when gas was 18 cents per gallon. My favorite tree has to be the sugar maple because it reminds me of brisk walks with my family in the fall in our Minnesota state parks. I love the vibrant orange pop of color in the midst of the other yellows, greens, and browns of the forest. It is naturally majestic and will always hold a special spot in my heart. 2009 LANDSCAPE AWARDS

The Minnesota Nursery & Landscape Association encourages ethical business practices and high standards of professionalism.

Buy plants from reputable sources. Minnesota state law requires that all plants sold as nursery stock in the state must be inspected or certified by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. Beware of door–to-door sales people selling trees or perennials dug from the wild. Install a rain sensor with your new lawn sprinkler system. Minnesota state law requires all newly-installed automatically operated landscape irrigation systems to include technology that inhibits or interrupts operation of the landscape irrigation system during periods of sufficient moisture. A “rain sensor” will pay for itself in water savings. Buy phosphorus-free fertilizer or hire a landscape management company that applies phosphorus-free fertilizer. Minnesota state law prohibits the application of fertilizer containing phosphorus

GardenMinnesota.com

to lawns except when applying phosphorus as a starter nutrient when establishing new lawns via seeding or sodding; or except when an accredited soil test demonstrates a need for phosphate nutrients. Help protect lakes from algae growth by using no-phosphorus fertilizer and by sweeping up grass clippings and collecting leaves and animal waste. Your landscape management company must employ licensed pesticide applicators. Minnesota state law requires that all persons applying lawn care pesticides commercially must have a pesticide applicator license. Licensed applicators employ best management practices to protect the environment.

Your lawn sprinkler or landscape lighting contractor must have a Technology System Contractor license. Minnesota state law requires that companies who install low voltage wiring as part of an irrigation system or landscape lighting system hold a Technology System Contractor license and that each company must have a licensed Power Limited Technician on staff. Licensed contractors have been properly trained to install irrigation and landscape lighting to help ensure efficiency and correct operation.
